Title: Gomer wasn't very far from home after all...
Post by retro on Mar 27th, 2009 at 8:26pm
Most of you already know that the quonset huts from Gomer Pyle, USMC were on the same backlot as The Andy Griffith Show.  This 1964 aerial view shows just how close they were, in Hollywood reality, to Wally's Service Station.

A, Yes, Camp Henderson and TAGS, and HH were filmed on the same lot, All during the same time period (1960's - early 70's).

B, Yes you can see the camp from Wally's in a few Wally's scenes, if you look carefully.

C, However, I don't think the quonset huts are that close.  They are obscured more by trees.  The camp buildings are seen down the road from Wally's, not across the road.  I think the above location of 'Wally's station is in error.  I'll have to look it up though.

By golly, you're right.  I revisited Jim Nolt's site that specifically deals with determining and proving the location of Wally's... across the street from the quonset huts.

Here is a good shot that illustrates both the angled orientation of Wally's as well as the close proximity of the quonset huts.

Below, you can see a portion of the large tree that was a fixture in the quonset hut area (and visible in the aerial view), but the quonset huts themselves are blocked by what appears to be a military-style truck from Gomer Pyle, USMC:

The first one is from Goober's Contest.  What one is the second one from?  It appears that it has rained... not a common occurance in Mayberry.

The second pic is from "Goober's Replacement"  #186

In the Goober's Replacement pic,  Just above the gray car on the left and behind the canvas covered truck.  What are those two arches?  Soccer goals?  Did they play Soccer in Mayberry?  Maybe an obstacle course for GPUSMC?

That would be a pretty small soccer field, don't you reckon? :D ;D

Actually, they look to be the ends of one soccer goal.  A netting is usually draped betwixed.  Nice catch Puddin'  :D

In the picture above the green car looks to be a Ford Falcon.
Any guess on what the grey one and light blue are??

Maybe a Studebaker, Plymouth Valiant

I think they are Mercury Valients R.N. And it looks to be a 57 Ford station wagon in front of the light blue one.
I was a wondering what the car behind the light blue one is. We can only see the front half of it. It almost looks like Gilly's old car.

For the rear most on on the right side, I'm thinking Studebaker.  Might be Frances Bavier's personal car.  Didn't she have a Stud'?

If it is a Studebaker, it could be Gilley Walker's car.  His was a Studebaker.  However, I think it was a different model than Bavier's.

The other two with the slanted tail lights, I'm thinking Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth.

And the one closest to the camera is indeed a Ford Falcon.

I remember one episode of Gomer where they were out in the company street at the huts and there was a large truck parked at the end of the street, I 'll bet that is the same truck !

Put a red and black swastika on it and it works on the HH set too.  There were certain shots on HH where the background was obstructed by strategically placed tarped military trucks just like that with Nazi livery.
