Title: A Black Day for Mayberry
Post by Nat Pike on Jan 18th, 2011 at 8:01pm
I watched this episode on YouTube today and to my surprise, it had no laugh-track. It got me to thinking. Was there ever a episode of TAGS that didn't have the laugh-track and was this episode one of them? I've become so used to it, that I swear that I've heard laughter before while watching it.

There's no laugh track on the DVD version either, which might be where the clip on You Tube came from.

Actually, all episodes of TAGS have a laugh track. The episode seen on YouTube was taken from the very first DVD release of the fourth season. "A Black Day For Mayberry" along with "Opie The Birdman", "Opie's Ill-Gotten Gain", and "The Sermon For Today" were mistakenly released without the laugh track. Paramount Home Video promptly took action and mailed "corrected" DVDs to those who requested them. Oddly, the "corrected" laugh track for "Black Day" and "Sermon" goes silent at 18 minutes into the program.

Since I'm 99% sure Paramount is not going to go back and do another "correction", I took it upon myself to restore the complete laugh tracks for these episodes. Using the audio from the Columbia House VHS tape for "Sermon" and the audio on "Black Day" from "The Andy Griffith Show Double Feature Volume 20" VHS tape from Premiere Promotions (Anyone remember them?), I was able to insert the full laugh tracked audio into the episodes from the Paramount DVDs.

It may have not been a big deal to most, but I'm just a hobbyist and I did in in a couple of hours. Paramount couldn't do this? Do you think they even cared to?

Not much to laugh at in "Opie The Birdman" anyway, that one makes me cry.
