Title: TAGS actor sightings
Post by Pierre on May 2nd, 2011 at 9:45am
Picked up a VHS, "Gus" for 75¢ on a garage sale

Don Knotts, of course.
Elenora Poultice shows up as an extra as well.

About an hour in, the airport scene where the hero 'leaves' for home in Yugoslavia.
Among the on-lookers is Henry Slate (Bobby Fleet I)

A later scene is a press conference.  At the end of the press conference Mr. Schwump walks across the screen, in front of the action.  He is taking notes as if he were a reporter.  He walks from left to right, then off screen.  The camera pans with 'Schwump' from left to right as he crosses over just before the camera picks up the Harold Gould character who crosses from right to left.  But, of course, "Schwamp" has no lines, and is not credited.

I'm tell ya, someone in Hollyweird KNOWS this guy.

This movie as a plethora of 70's actors and football players:

     Edward Asner
     Don Knotts
     Tim Conway
     Dick Van Patten
     Bob Crane  (from Hogan's Heroses)
     Johnny Unitas
     Dick Butkus
Tom Bosley  (Mr. Cunningham of HD)
     Richard Kiel  (the giant)

Who is Peter Paul Eastman in the credits as a reporter? In IMDB, it says he is in quite a few movies (some with Don Knotts) playing an extra.

That's big news, Pierre. I think the only movie we've definitely tied him to was, Christmas In Connecticut. Any chance of a screen capture?

Not a chance on the screen cap, I haven't the technology.  Some day, though... some day.  VHS to computer is a tough row to hoe.

He's probably in one of two or three press conference scenes.  The aforementioned one and one earlier in the show.  There could have been a third.  Guess'n I'll have to watch it again.

I also suspect, there are other TAGS alumna I haven't ID'd yet.

Surprisingly, Knotts doesn't have a lot of face time on the movie.  It centers mostly around the main character, Andy Petrovich (Gary Grimes) and Gus the mule.  Tim Conway gets a lot of face time, though, as he tries to keep Gus off the playing field.

>edit<  He's listed on IMDB as Man In The Airport.  There's a couple airport scenes.  Probably the one later in the movie with Henry Slate (Bobby Fleet I).  At the later scene, people are asking Andy about the Superbowl game.  To some they could appear to be reporters, but I took it that they were fans who happened to recognize him.

Haven't seen "Gus" since I was a kid. I remember Bob Crane as the "ol Pepper Pod".

Title: Re: TAGS actor sightings

Crane got his start in show business as a radio personality.  I wonder if he injected some of the Real Bob Crane into 'The Old Pepper Pod" character.
Right?
Right!

I seem to recall, as a kid, parroting that line.  "Right?  Right!"  Must have gotten it from Gus.

I've been watching a lot of Twilight Zone lately and it seemed like a TAGS actor was popping up in every episode.

James Best in the The Grave as Johnny Rob
Ron Howard in Walking Distance as The Wilcox Boy
William Keene in The Midnight Sun as Doctor
Joseph Hamilton in Mirror Image as the Ticket Agent

I was particularly proud of identifying Joseph Hamilton because I pretty much did it by voice.

I would post screen caps but not on my own personal computer so don't feel like getting into it but all of these episodes are on You Tube

Title: Re: TAGS actor sightings
Post by Keevy Hazelton on May 4th, 2011 at 12:29pm

PG, you'll most likely have to have a stand alone DVD player on your computer. I don't see a way to do a capture from Windows Media Player. The process is much the same with all players; mine just requires a click of a camera icon after the video is paused on the chosen scene, and is then saved like any other file.

Umm.. I have the dvd player that comes with a mac book, and I tried to do the ss like I would on a normal webpage and it doesn't show up so I"m not sure what i'm doing....

PG, if ya want, you could download the free VLC media player.  It has a function where you play a DVD on your computer and you pause it on the picture you want, click, and that photo still will be filed in your photos folder on you computer.  Just my two cents.

If you have windows vista:

I'm not sure about MAC's, but with a PC sometimes its as simple as hitting the "Print Screen" button when you have the scene you want showing, and then pasting it into a photoshop or word document.

Is it OK to have both VLC and Windows Media Player downloaded. It won't affect what I have stored in Windows Media Player will it?

No, Uncle Nat, you can have as many media players on your computer as ya want.  You'll probably just get a message asking you which one you want to be your default player.  VLC is popular because it plays almost any kind of file, unlike some of the more popular players out there.

[Screen Print] button will take a snapshot of your screen.  I think this has worked since Windows 1.0.

Then open MSWord or MSPaint and [Ctl]+[v] (which is a generic 'paste' function.

voila!  a pic of your screen is pasted to your document.  You can crop the edges in MSPaint.

I'll have to look into that VLC thing Dud.

Caught Ken Lynch in a "Dick Van d**e Show" rerun last night, in a role that seemed really strange for him. I mean, he played so many police & law enforcement types, as he did in his handful of TAGS appearances. But in this Van d**e episode, he was a new neighbor of the Petries who happened to have a very talented young son just when the Alan Brady Show was holding auditions for young talent. Odd casting.

Actor Ross Elliott played director Al Saunders in “The Taylors in Hollywood” and played himself, but as a studio publicity agent, in a 1955 I Love Lucy episode, “Don Juan and the Starlets”.

Sue Ane Langdon.  I think she was the best looking of Andy's love interests.  She is still alive, at about 75.  She lost her first and only husband last spring.

I wonder if'n she'd be interested in Mayberry Days.

Hmmm.    Unfortunately, I am reasonably certain that this is not the same actor.   There are several differences in his features, and also, this man is too young considering Mr. Schwamp's appearance ten years prior:

Title: Re: TAGS actor sightings

He sure does look like Schwampy.  Given the estimated age of Schwamp in this movie, this feller does look a tad young.  Maybe Schamp had one of the face lifts.

And in a very Twilight Zonish way, this time he was the one doing the head-bashing and in the form of murder! But he got his in the end, broken neck falling down a stair case.

This afternoon I saw Karl Swenson/Mr McBeevee and Olan Soule/John McMasters in an episode of The Court Of Last Resort, from 1956 or 57. We can add being a reoccuring lab tech on Dragnet to Olan Soule’s credits. As far as I can figure, a lot of old-time series were shown in localized markets, and have local or regional sponsors. I guess production costs were minimal and most actor’s saleries weren’t that high back in the late 40s and early to mid 50s.

Gotta love those dollar videos.  I pick them up at the dollar stores whenever I see one that piques my interest.  I've had one in my collection for a couple years which I opened for the first time this weekend.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin (1957) Staring Van Johnson, Claude Rains and a short appearance by Jim Backus.  It's a wonderful story.  I'm not sure if it's a musical or an opera.  All the dialogue is in poetic verse that mostly rhymes, interspersed with songs.

TAGS alums: Amzie Strickland and Doodles Weaver.

Amzie played several characters:
Aunt Bee on TV (1965) … Myra Tucker
The Bazaar (1965) … Myra Tucker
Barney Fife, Realtor (1965) … Lila Sims
Deputy Otis (1962) … Mrs. Ralph Campbell
Andy the Matchmaker (1960) … Miss Rosemary

Doodles:
A Black Day for Mayberry (1963) … Regis, the Tax Protester
Aunt Bee's Brief Encounter (1961) … George Bricker

Been sitting around in the air conditioning this hot summer afternoon, watching old movies, and have a couple of sightings to report:

In Niagara, a 1953 movie starring Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Cotten (I highly recommend it), Will Wright appears as the proprietor of a boat dock.

Also, in the movie Alaska Passage, made in 1959, there was an appearance by Fred Sherman, who appeared in a couple of episodes of TAGS as as Mr. Goss, operator of a dry cleaning establishment (he almost became "Mr. Aunt Bee" in one of them  ;D).

That episode bothered me, because Aunt Bee came so close to marrying someone, just because Clara put some crazy idea into her head.  :-?

Just for that, I hope Clara doesn't win first prize for her pickles at the fair this year.  >:(

It's really odd that Aunt Bee, who got to be quite opinionated in the later episodes, was so impressionable where Clara was concerned.

I wonder why she paid so much attention to Clara's advice.  And, of course, Clara ALWAYS had some advice, didn't she?

You see how Aunt Bee really felt about Clara at the beginning of The Pickle Story when Clara keeps going on about how Bee could make her pickles better.  When Clara exits out the back door, Aunt Bee mockingly mimics Clara.  But, I would imagine that they had a good relationship in spite of Clara's bossiness.  Aunt Bee probably just wished she could be as assertive as Clara and was just as put out with herself for not being able to hold her own when it came to Clara.  That's probably way yonder too much psychologizing than was intended.  Sorry.

It's probably one of those things that goes WAY back into their pasts...didn't they know each other since they were very young, and even play on the same basketball team when they were kids (seems like I remember a reference to that in some episode, though at the moment, I can't recall which one)?

"Kentucky Rifle".  Great story about a wagon that gets separated from the rest of the train when they bust an axle.  The jist of which is the argument over negotiating with the Cherokee for their personal safety.

An actor I dearly love to listen to was in it.  No, not a TAGS actor, but played a lot of westerns with his gravely voice and grandfather like demeanor.  He also played on John Wayne's McClintock!  he was G.W.'s right hand man, Drago.  The actor's name I have never committed to memory, but hope to now remember it, Chill Wills.  In this movie, he got 'Star' billing.  Oddly, his given name is Chill Wills.  Apparently his mother had a sense of humor.  He was born on the hottest day of the year.

The TAGS alumna?  Sterling Holloway.

A couple more:
Both westerns.

Vengeance Valley:
Will Wright plays the bunk house's cookie as well as the trail cook.

Sundowners:
Another appearance of Chill Wills and Jack Elam.  Both in their relative youth.  I recognized Elam only from his cockeyed eye.  :o

No TAGS Alums but a kissin' cousin.  John Drew Barrymore made his screen debut in this film.  He was once cast to play Lazarus on a Star Trek (TOS)  episode, but walked off the set, never getting on the screen. (he had personal problems).  And... TAGS filmed at least one episode on Myers Lake (Franklin Canyon Reservoir (upper)).  Okay,  :-/ maybe distant cousins.

This has to be one of the more interesting double sightings I’ve ever seen. Last night an episode of Marshal Dillon, a half hour show that evolved into Gunsmoke, had both Hope Summers/Clare Edwards, and Buddy Epsen/Dan Brown, the old drifter.

The story was fantastic, in that they were married, and had spent 30 years building up their farm. He catches a young man trying to steal one of his pigs, and she talks him out of shooting him. Instead, he takes the young man home, and meets the youngster’s young, pretty widowed mother.

He is smitten with her, and starts spending all his time at their scrubby dirt farm. The pretty widow sets her eyes on marrying him, of course to get his farm. But Hope Summer’s character isn’t going to let that happen, and tries without any success to scare off the pretty widow. In the end she burns down their farm, and the pretty widow loses interest real fast. In the end Hope Summers and Buddy Epsen realize they still love each other, and vow to rebuild their farm.

Here's Mayberry grocer, Charlie Foley, from a later episode of LeaveItToBeaver. He plays a tramp who shows up at the Cleaver's back door with a sob story while Ward and June are out. Beaver, who has just been scolded about his selfishness, agrees to let him in the kitchen and makes him a sandwich. After asking to, "wash up a bit," he ends up taking a bath in Ward and June's bathtub!

Saw two Mayberry folks in a late 1950s Peter Gunn overnight. What was fun is that both were different as could be from their Mayberry characters.

Howard McNear played an antique dealer who was both a diamond thief and a murderer. But he was a bit goofy just like Floyd.

Hope Summers played a apartment manager who took a $5.00 bribe to open a suspect's door, and she even flirted with Peter Gunn.

Saw Andy Griffith on an episod og Hawaii Five-0 from the 1970s, I think. He was teamed with Joyce Van Patten and a pre-teen child actress, as a family of small time con artists. They make the mistake of ripping off the bag man for the local mob, which obviously aren’t very happy. The police finally save them, arrest the mob boss and many of his men, in exchange for the conning family leaving for the mainland. On there way to the airport, they can resist one more con, but the mark is an undercover cop. So I’m not sure if they ended up at the airport, or in jail.
