Title: Snake in the grass
Post by Pierre on Jul 5th, 2011 at 9:11am
We've never had an issue with snakes at our home until this weekend.  It appears a garter snake has taken up residence along our foundation in our flower bed.

My wife is deathly afraid of snakes of any size, shape or species.  As such she is afraid to go out in our back yard to tend to her flowers.

I thought about killing him, but I kind of hated to go that far.  Does anyone know how to trap a snake for disposal at a distance?

I set up a big garbage bag (opened up) and put a piece of sausage in it. Not too big though. Snakes aren't picky eaters. I then tied it close and took it off.
Please don't kill a garter snake or any snake. They do so much good for the world. They love to eat mice, rats, grasshoppers, etc.
Good luck with that and your wife. Tell her just not to reach into a dark, confined place. That is where they spend about 95% of their day.

Walmart has some stuff called "Snake-B-Gone"
Don't know if it works or not.

We've been invaded by a slow infestation of what we call tiger lilies around our house.  We once had irises but they've slowly been pushed out by the volunteer lilies.  I removed about half of them on the one side of the house.  The snake seems to take up residence in the dense stand lilies by the house.  I've seen him/her twice slithering from the gravel topped septic tank in the morning.  I suspect she is warming up there at night, then when startled by us, makes her escape to the lilies.

I can withstand an occasional startlement but my wife is scared witless.  I, myself, can appreciate and somewhat welcome the eater of voles and such, but she has to go for my wife's sanity.

I will try the bag method.  Failing that, I'll go for the Snake-B-Gone.

I suspect I will have to, carefully, go to work on the remaining lilies this weekend.

Not sure why we are suddenly cohabitating with a garter snake.  We had a dog until a couple years ago.  Maybe her odor has finally worn off to the point the snake has felt comfortable approaching our yard.

Is this snake an egg layer or a live bearer?

The lilies are a lot of work to eradicate.  They have to be dug up, roots, tubers and all or they will come back.  The worst thing they do is damage our insulation.  We have 1" blueboard insulation around the perimeter of our foundation.  The lilies' roots have burrowed into the insulation.  I fear I may have to replace some of it.

We have a small stand of them around the base of a light pole guy wire.  But up by the house they are a destructive nuisance!

Garter snakes lay eggs.  Non-poisonous snakes lay eggs and poisonous give live birth.

Garter snakes are easy to catch and release somewhere else.

While we're on the subject, were snakes ever mentioned on TAGS?

Acording to Wikipedia the Garter snake gives birth and can have as many as 80 to a litter.

Maybe I'll try that this weekend.  I'll go out looking for her then step on her kind of easy.  The grab her behind the head, stuff her in a tow sack, then haul her down the road a few miles near a creek.

You can run snakes off with moth balls, just don't run 'em the wrong way!

I have a possum that stops by for cat food sometimes. I call him Opossum Paul.

Yeah. Fred Boone said he was living with a rattlesnake.
That's no way to talk about your beloved, Fred.  ;D

Aww Lydia, give 'em a chance. My family used to think I was crazy liking snakes so much. I have 3 (that I know of) water moccassins in my pond in the back that I love watching during the summer (from afar of course). They've been there 4 or 5 years. They are such good hunters and I love watching them slide through the water. The frogs out there aren't as impressed as I am though. I named them Winken, Blinken and Nod.

I'm always hearing about snakes catching mice. Well, I'd much rather have mice. I don't like big snakes, little snakes, live snakes, dead snakes, poisonous snakes, non poisonous snakes-I DON'T EVEN LIKE STICKS THAT LOOK LIKE SNAKES------

Didn't Opie once say that you could put a horse hair in stagnation water and it would turn into a snake?

All of you anti-snakeys, read this about the problem with them in Hawaii. That could be very bad for the ecology there. http://news.yahoo.com/snakes-threaten-hawaiis-fragile-island-ecosystem-093254000.html

It makes my skin crawl (no pun intended) just to READ about snakes!  Kill 'em all!  I'm an animal-lover but my gentle heart does not extend toward the creepie-crawlies.  Ewwwww...

Well, my plans to catch, then relocate it were thwarted.  In my absence, the snake made the mistake of slithering past my wife while she was carrying a hoe.

Long story short, some neighborhood cat ate well that night.
