With the quality of those helmets, he might be safer NOT wearing one!!  :)

Back then you wasn't supposed to rough up the quaterback during practice.  Quarterbacks wore plaid shirts so you didn't forget.  Therefore, he didn't need a helmet.

'Course during the game, "piling on" was the norm.

When did they outlaw piling on?

It drew a flag in "The Longest Yard" in '74.

Yeah, high-scoring games weren't all that typical back then.  ::)

When I was in Korea I remember hearing an older SGT comment on Joe Namath throwing for 200 yards in a game, "...that reckless hippie. Y.A. Tittle is turning over in his grave. QB's today are made of cheap porcelain". Of course, being a sergeant I didn't argue that YA was still living.

;D

I always remember Grampa Simpson's comment about Joe Namath:  "Look at them sideburns!  He looks like a girl!"

Well, he did make the commercial for pantyhose that one time.

He is one of the best; he tries to make 4 or 5 Alabama games a year (Roll Tide) and is very approachable. I have met him on several occasions.

As I understand it Football players regularly wear panty hose under their uniform pants.  It keeps their skin taught and hard to grip.  Helps keep the body warm in the winter too.

I don't suspect anyone had the guts to harass Namath about those L'egg's he was wearing.

Pierre, is that one of those rare nickel tricks?  If so, you're funny . . funny as a crutch.

They made Homer's mom turn into a terrorist.
Remember Grampa's quote, "Johnny Unitas. Now there's a haircut you can set your watch by". I say that a lot.
