Title: Happy Veteran's Day

To all who served in such "wonderful" places like Udorn Thailand (me), Normandy Beach, Tikrit Iraq, Gettysburg, Iwo Jima, Pearl Harbor, Kabul, Hanoi, Richmond, Greenland (me), and any/everywhere in between: Thank You.

THE FINAL INSPECTION
The Soldier stood and faced God,
... Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass..
'Step forward now, Soldier ,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?'
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
'No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear..
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the Soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
'Step forward now, you Soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell.'

Since I was lucky enough not to have to serve, I truly appreciate all those who did. Several friends came back from Nam less than whole.

Thanks fellas and Ladies for doing a job I didn't have to.

I am surprised at the number of people who don't understand the significance of Nov 11.

November 11, 1918, 11:11am Europe time, the guns fell silent and the belligerents fell back to end the "War to end all Wars," as they called it back then.  Sadly, it wasn't.  We know it today is the First World War.

The last US soldier of the WWI era went to his great reward this past February, Frank Woodruff Buckles.

Want an uplifting story?  Read his bio.

If the foregoing poem, Final Inspection, posted by the good Widder Bradshaw, was written for anyone, it was written for him.
I'm proud to say, " He's one of ours."

i have a great respect for those who have served and who have served especially during wartime. i spent 3 years in the USAF and i am so sick of all the times i hear "you werent in a war, your not a veteran". it doesnt matter, wartime or peace time a veteran is someone who served in the military. if a war would have broke out i would have been on my way but it didnt thank God, but im no less a veteran...   sorry lost it a little there.
