Title: Arlo & Janis Comic Strip - Mayberry
Post by Squad Car on Dec 9th, 2011 at 7:11pm
What a wonderful surprise!  My favorite comic strip is "Arlo & Janis".  I've been reading it for years.  This following strip ran the other day.  Turns out, the artist who does the strip, Jimmy Johnson, is a TAGS fan!

Then here is what he wrote on his website today in regards to the TAGS strip:

"I was pleasantly surprised by the response to yesterday’s Arlo & Janis, the CSI: Mayberry cartoon. Maybe I shouldn’t have been. I know for a fact lots of people fondly remember the classic television comedy—meaning the black and white episodes featuring Don Knotts, of course. To this day, there are friends to whom I remember myself with the phrase “Gomer says, Hey!” (to which the proper response is, “Hey to Gomer.”) My bona fides in this area is solid. Buddies and I were charter members of the Otis Campbell Chapter of the Andy Griffith Rerun-Watchers Club when I lived in Jackson, Mississippi, not long before I dreamed up Arlo & Janis. You can imagine how ground-floor we had to be to snag that chapter name! That was about the last club I joined. "

The Otis Campbell Chapter!  How about that?!

You can see it and read it at arloandjanis.com

Honestly, I'm not sure a non-TAGS fan would have gotten the joke.

I s'pect Jimmy Johnson is one of ours.

Yea, they wouldn't have gotten the specific reference to the Cow Thief episode.  But I think the fact that the investigation involves tracking a cow makes the CSI: Mayberry reference funny to a person without specific TAGS knowledge.

It is neat to see that in a comic strip an know you have some inside knowledge of the reference that most probably don't.

Would that be called an "Inside Joke"?  ;)
