Title: Barney Plighting His Troth
Post by Thelscuz on Jan 7th, 2012 at 2:39pm
Seems like we all agree that Barney was not the most faithful fellow in the world (Nee-tah, Wah,a,uh, neeta).  But deep down inside it appeared that Barney truly loved only Thelma Lou.  (We'll discount the pitiful "Class Reunion" episode where he forgets her as soon as the blond bats her eyelashes at him.)

How many times did Barney "Plight His Troth" to Thel?  Any ideas?  I mean times when he seemed to sincerely speak to her or of her regarding his love for her.

Maybe we'd better just consider it "temporary insanity" that he moved off and left her and didn't keep in touch.  We know that Barney in his right mind would never have done that!

Well, he seemed to close mighty close that time they were looking at the living room furniture display at Ben Weaver's after the picture show.

I sort of understand the writers keeping Andy single, but wonder why they didn't get Barney and Thelma Lou hitched in the 5th season. They still could have made a huge ratings splash with a two-parter when Don Knotts was able to do a guest spot in between making movies. I also wonder if the idea ever came up. Guess we may never know these things along with the identity of our favorite mystery man.

Without a 'wing man', Andy's life would be pretty boring.  But with two single best-est of friends, an occasional boys night out on the town was exciting and appropriate as they were both unattached, save for the 'understanding' Andy and Helen had. (He was understanding... she wasn't)  When one friend gets married, the two usually drift apart.  But I agree that a return of Barney should have been an opportunity to write both Barney and Thel out of the show gracefully.  As it is Thel just quit showing up.  Quite a sad state of affairs.

Well there was the time early on when Barn had a hard time talking to Thel. And he tells Andy how much she means to him, even right down to saying how when he looks down at his eggs every morning he sees her face. Now if that ain't true love, I don't know what true love is. ;D

He told her she was, "the only girl I love," on the dance floor in one of the Fun Girls episodes.

Good one, Keevy!  Was that the one where Thel couldn't hear what he was saying because of the music?  Then, he said it louder and the music stopped and everybody started laughing?

That was a touching moment...

Yes, TC, that was the one.

But did he ever plight his troth?

I mean to Plight one's troth is to promise to marry.

Did he ever do that?

"You're the cats," isn't necessarily troth plighting.

Discussing furniture for the man's den in the couple's future home sounds to me like a man that's done plighted!
