Title: Charlene's divorce and betrothal to Andy
Post by Andyfan on Jan 25th, 2012 at 6:00am
Unlike so many episodes of TAGS, this one did not have a moral. It was just good fun -- and a lot of fun. There was also a semi-spooky aspect that writers and actors both played for laughs in the mountain folklore of Charlene's "divorce" and poor Barney's ride on the white horse. He reminded me of a figure out of a movie about the Puritans in his black suit and hat. It was funny to learn he would sneeze because of the horse but had to ride him to Andy's rescue.
Does anyone else like this episode?

The moral was a selfless act of Barney riding a horse to help his pal, knowing full well that he was allergic to horses.

:)

What do you like about it?  I think one reason it tickles me is that the mountain folk are somehow endearing in their superstitious adherence to certain silly, yet fascinating, rituals.  They are very childlike and that leads me to like them. I also really feel for Andy who has a sense of being trapped because Charlene is so wrong for him yet he is afraid both of hurting her feelings and of possible violence from the Darlings should he hurt hers. Oddly, Charlene might have been a good match for the character Andy Griffith played in "No Time For Sergeants." I also just love seeing Barney in that black garb on that white horse, sneezing and awkward -- yet accomplishing the task of getting Andy out of his bind!

I like it for all of the reasons you just said. Also,  I just like it because it is a bit different. I mean, let's face it in what other episode does Barney ride throught the streets at night on a horse to try to get Andy out of an "arranged" marriage!

P.S.  It is also one of the few episodes that are set entirely at night.

I'm not so sure about that, the 'otis on a cow' scene ranks high on my favorite TAGS scenes list. :D
