Title: The Pickle Story and Why I Love TAGS
Post by Andyfan on Feb 12th, 2012 at 8:25am
I just watched "The Pickle Story" on YouTube. This episode may well be my favorite and the best illustration of why I'm genuinely an "AndyFan."  It was really funny to watch the reactions to Aunt Bee's "kerosene cucumbers" and the efforts of Andy and Barney to get rid of her awful pickles.
Once again, the show knew when NOT to be funny even though it was a wonderful comedy. It didn't ridicule Clara's pride in her special ability as a good pickle maker. I feel for her in that she takes comfort in something that many people would consider trivial but something that she can do well. Andy hit it right on the head when he said, "What is small potatoes to some people can be mighty important to others." It was so believable to learn that, when Clara is lonely or depressed, she takes out the record of her pickle victories.
What do others think of this episode?

Andy hit it on the head.

But, food making and providing is no trivial matter to women of Clara's generation.

Even my wife takes on the responsibility for making sure everyone is fed.  For me, and I suspect most men, it's an after thought.  We don't think about making food until we're hungry.  That begets a ill planned quick meal, while mostly nutritious, not very enjoyable.  My wife thinks about making meals about a hour before she or I get hungry.

That's why I love her so.  :-*

While there are gender differences in this area, different individuals are good at -- and emotionally invested -- in different things. Aunt Bee fixes great fried chicken and terrible pickles. Clara makes wonderful pickles.
I read of a very respected chef in a high priced restaurant. Like most chefs in the fanciest restaurant, this one was a man. After a negative review, he committed suicide. His job was cooking so when a critic said he had cooked badly, he was deeply wounded.

I LOVE this episode.  All the best in all the characters comes out--Andy and Barney working hard to keep from hurting Aunt Bee's feelings and even enlisting poor Opie to go along with the charade!

This episode also contains one of my "Top Five" lines from TAGS.  After the judging at the fair when Andy learns that Aunt Bee has made a double batch of pickles because "her boys" love them so much, Andy turns to Barney and says something like:  "We'll do what we should have done to begin with--we'll learn to love them."

He says this as he reaches into that kerosene-reeking jar and pulls out another one of those awful pickles.  Hilarious!!

That's why, when you are trying to not hurt someone's feelings, you shouldn't over do it.  They feigned enjoying them so spectacularly well, Aint Bee decided to make several more batches.   :-[

This is a great episode, one of my favorites, too.

Besides containing plenty of humor, the scene described by Andyfan, when Clara describes how much the pickle contest means to her, is a very touching one.

:)
