What did Calvin Coolidge say?
Jan 9th, 2009 at 10:54pm

With the death of Warren Harding in 1923, Calvin Coolidge became President. A taciturn Vermonter and a vintage conservative, Coolidge won the 1924 election handily. In his Inaugural Address in January of 1925, the 30th president declared:

"The higher state to which she (America) seeks the allegiance of all mankind is not human, but of Divine origin. She cherishes no purpose, save to merit the favor of Almighty God."

I guess he said a LOT more than what Floyd told us.  Wink

Here's some good ones.  For a person who supposedly was a man of few words, he sure had a lot to say.  I'll take quality over quantity anyday.

"Don't expect to build up the weak by pulling down the strong."

"No matter what anyone may say
about making the rich and the corporations pay taxes,
in the end they come out of the people who toil."

“Patriotism is easy to understand in America; it means looking out for yourself by looking out for your country.”

“No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.”

Kinda sounds like he's reading our mail here in the 21st century.

I think that was Norman "Chubby" Chaney of the Little Rascals.. Might have been parodying Coolidge.

Well I'll be jiggered... Nope, not Coolidge.  Wikipedia's Wikiquotes pages says:

'... first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.

Was part of a eulogy to President George Washington.  This eulogy was given by Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee III.  Revolutionary war hero and falther to Robert Edward Lee.

"You LOSE"  - President Calvin Coolidge

Have any of you ever heard that story? I've heard it from several sources and it is my understanding that it is actually true.

Just in case you haven't here's the story, as best I can recount it.

The story goes that a certain lady was invited to a dinner at the White House and the President was present. Known for his lack of conversation, she had placed a bet with friends that she could not even get him to say two words the whole evening. Before the end of the evening she told the President about the bet. "You LOSE," was the reply. She lost the bet! Grin
