Bread Pudding

Bread Pudding

2 Tbsp. butter
4 1/2" thick slices of French bread, cut into 1" cubes
4 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup white sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 cups scalded milk
1 pinch ground nutmeg
1 Tbsp. dark brown sugar
1 cup pecans, chopped

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Butter one 2 qt.casserole dish.
Prepare water bath for casserole dish by placing a larger pan
with water in the oven
Place cubes of bread in the casserole dish. Beat together the eggs, sugar and vanilla; slowly add the scalded milk. Pour over the bread. If desired, sprinkle with nutmeg, brown sugar and pecans.
Place the casserole in the water bath and bake for 50 - 60 mins. or til a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Serve warm or chilled. Also good served warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Makes 7 servings
