We've got a beautiful day here in Texas - raining really hard! Yep, it's beautiful. We were pretty dry. Sure knocks out the TV dish, though. Oh, well, who cares? It's not time for TAGS anyway.
Thanks, neighbors. I know I'd have lots of help with my yard if it wasn't for the distance. God provides, though. Another neighbor offered the name of his yard man, has known him for years, and judging by my neighbor's yard, he knows what he's doing. So, I'll be calling him.
I apologize for the length, but I just have to share this: The Plum adores those little baby carrots, they're her favorite treat. Last night, I opened the fridge and turned away for a minute. Sugarplum noticed the corner of the carrot bag peeking out of the crisper drawer, pulled on it until the drawer opened, pulled the bag out and triumphantly carried the whole bag into the living room! Of course, I couldn't let her keep it, but I did let her nose into the bag and grab one before I put the bag away. What a sight, little plumey tail just waving like a flag, she was so proud of herself!
Well, gotta run. Have a great day, friends. You are all so special. BTW, where's Tom?--Romeena

March 19, 2002 - Msg 5750: "trouble check"

March 19, 2002 - Msg 5751: Remember when......?

Turn on your sound and remember. . . . You'll enjoy this one. OK, so some
of you might have been too young to remember . . . . enjoy the music anyway.

REMEMBER....

When the worst thing you could do at school was smoke in the bathrooms,
flunk a test or chew gum. And the banquets were in the cafeteria and we
danced to a juke box later, and all the girls wore fluffy pastel gowns and
the boys wore suits for the first time and we were allowed to stay out till 12 p.m.

When a '57 Chevy was everyone's dream car. . . to cruise, peel out, lay rubber and watch drag races, and people went steady and girls wore a class
ring with an inch of wrapped dental floss or yarn coated with pastel frost nail polish so it would fit her finger.

And no one ever asked where the car keys were 'cause they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked. And you got in big trouble if you accidentally locked the doors at home, since no one ever had a key.

Remember lying on your back on the grass with your friends and saying things like "That cloud looks like a..."

And playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game. Back then, baseball was not a psychological group learning experience-it was a game.

Remember when stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals 'cause no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger.

And...with all our progress...don't you just wish...just once...you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace...and share it with the
children of the 80's and 90's...

So send this on to someone who can still remember Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Laurel & Hardy, Howdy Doody and The Peanut Gallery, The Lone Ranger,
The Shadow Knows, Nellie Belle, Roy and Dale, Trigger and Buttermilk as well as the sound of a real mower on Saturday morning, and summers filled with bike rides, playing in cowboy land, baseball games, bowling and visits to the pool...and eating Kool-Aid powder with sugar.

When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home.

Basically, we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn't because of drive by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc.

Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! But we all survived because their love was greater than the threat.

Didn't that feel good, just to go back and say, Yeah, I remember that!

March 19, 2002 - Msg 5752: Thats quite a stroll down memory lane. Kinda sad to see how far we have gotten off course. I be feeling like that toad in the boiling water about now. At least we have places like this we can come to and hang out, and get away from the helter skelter of life.

Asa

March 19, 2002 - Msg 5753: Thanks, msg 5751. Oh for those times again. I finished school in '83 and I thought then things couldn't get any worse. Boy was I wrong. I shudder to think about my child and grandchildren (if I should have any) and what kind of world they will have to endure. I hope to train him to bring a little good to it (he already has). I just try to remember that one day things will just be PERFECT.
Asa, glad your feeling better. Take care of yourself and drink plenty of O.J.
I've been a missin' Newton too, and where's MERLE DEAN been.
I agree with Sam Scott, Salty. My brother is in therapy now and he's like a different person, I feel as if I have a brother finally.

March 19, 2002 - Msg 5757: Hi Ya'll, I'm new here ~ My friend told me of a place called "The Porch", but there are millions!
I am a fan of the AGS and wanted to say hi! Worked on the Mattlock in Wilmington, NC a few times ~ Andy is still living on Figure 8 island with his wife and 2 dogs last I heard a year or so back. Anyway, hello from this Carolina girl!

Just call me "Happy"!

March 19, 2002 - Msg 5758: Hey to the porch, I just put up a blue birds nest last week and I already have a young couple builing in there. They are such fun to watch, he is such a gentleman the way he sits on the fence post waiting for her while she is inside fluffing and building. My bluebirds say hey to (Winkin, Blinkin and nod).. Emma

March 19, 2002 - Msg 5759: Hey to you Happy Carolina girl! Welcome to the porch! Pull up a chair and sit a spell. What'd ya do on Matlock? I like that show too. Watch it sometimes in the p.m. on TBS. Hey to Fun Girl. We're havin' spaghetti tonight too! Secret ingredient: Hunt's tomato sauce 99¢ a can! Got a new job today--rush proofing job so I gotta stay on top of it! Sorry for being in such a hurry, Salty Dog. Seems to be the nature of my business. Good evenin' to the porch. Hope it's warmer on your porch than it is on mine!
Charlotte Tucker

March 19, 2002 - Msg 5760: Hey Emma, we's postin' at the same time! So you've already got two bluebirds! Good for you! Enjoy them for me. I'd like to get me one of them houses myself.
Charlotte Tucker

March 19, 2002 - Msg 5761: Howdy, friends! Anybody want to come help me and the Plum build an ark? I've got three inches of water in my backyard. 'Course it may have as much to do with poor drainage as with volume (teehee). This Texas clay belt my house sits on could be used to caulk a bathtub. My flowerbeds have all been dug out 15 inches deep and landscaper's mix filled in, otherwise I couldn't grow weeds, much less flowers. Anyhow, we've had lots of very welcome rain, thank the Lord.
Asa, I'm glad your cold is improving. Colds are miserable, and should be against the law. Salty, it's great to hear how well your cousin is doing. Again, thank the Lord. Happy, welcome to the porch. You'll love it here, just LOVE it! Emma, bless you for providing housing for those two lovely little birds. A perfect example of how good deeds come back to bless you. Just look at the pleasure you're getting from watching them. My dear husband used to love to watch the sparrows build in our old birdhouse. The males dutifully fly back and forth, carrying grass and string and twigs and such, and the females perch in the doorway and pass judgment on the materials. If accepted, just a fast pass-off, and the male flies off for more. If rejected, he gets a shrill beak-lashing from the little hen, sadly drops his offering, and again flies off for something else. My husband often said he knew exactly how that little bird felt! Then he'd look at me in mock fear, and laugh. What fun we had! Oh, well... Everyone have a great week, and Sugarplum says hey!--Romeena

March 19, 2002 - Msg 5762: Bless you Romeena. What great memory's you have.

Asa

March 19, 2002 - Msg 5763: Hay to msg 5751: Yes indeed I remember when; I was there and wish I was back sometimes. We don't appreciate the good things until there gone. I read somewhere that a young girl inquired of her granddad; "did you and grandmama practice safe se-? (we didn't ever use that word then). Her granddad thought for a moment... and replied, yes sweetheart we did, we used a wedding band.
In those days I rarely missed TAGS, even though I appreciate that show even more today. Thanks TVLAND! ALAN! I also miss others that are excellient for family viewing like The Andersons; Jim, Margaret, Betty (Eleanore Donahue), Bud and Kathy in "Father Knows Best". I heard that Turner bought the series along with others and put them in his film vault. Anybody, I say anybody know for sure?? Columbia said there not available presenty. Ozzie 'n Harriett; The Life of Riley; The Jack Benny Show; The Roy Rogers Show.. Yea, I remember. I guess this porch is a lot like it use to be; just go back 'n read it once 'n awhile.
Thanks, again 5751! I enjoyed that!

March 20, 2002 - Msg 5772: Hey everybody. How is everybody doing today?? Hope yall are having a good one. Its kinda rainy here where I live but the rain is much needed. Be careful out there, ya hear!!

March 20, 2002 - Msg 5773: Hey, Mavis! Glad you're back, hon. Now, I want to know this -- Where is Chaplain Tom? Haven't heard one of his pretty poems in waaay too long! Hope he's okay. Asa, can you send out a search party? We need that boy around here!
Speaking of memories, friends, you're talkin' to a gal who graduated high school in 1956! Now, I ask you, could anyone have any better memories than mine? What a wonderful decade that was, the 50's. We were so innocent, and we had so much fun. A "big date" involved either a drive-in movie or the roller-skating rink, and always ended up at Buddy's on the Fredericksburg Hwy or at the Bun'N Barrel on the Austin Hwy. Either way, it meant a big old greasy, juicy, oniony burger and a frosted mug of root beer, and probably some decadent fries and/or onion rings. Weight and blood sugar were of no concern (I weighed 108 lbs and the only diabetic I'd ever heard of was my uncle.) I wore a poodle skirt, matched sweater sets, and yards of petticoats. I even wore one of those elastic waist-cincher belts. On a 21" waist it looked pretty good! Oh, those were the days.
After our first date, my future husband hitch-hiked from Randolph AFB out to my house in the country the next afternoon. I wasn't expecting him, and just as he arrived I rode in on my horse after riding for several hours. It was July (in Texas), I was wearing shorts and the horse wasn't wearing a saddle. When I dismounted, my legs were covered with horsehair and horse sweat. The back of my shirt was, too, because I'd been lying back on his rump looking at clouds while he grazed in a little secret meadow I knew about. My husband told me years later that he had come out there because he thought he was in love, and seeing me like that confirmed it!! He was one in a million.
Well, enough of that. I just wish everyone could have grown up in the 50's. I feel truly blessed. Have a great day, friends.--Romeena

March 20, 2002 - Msg 5774: Goodmornin to the porch. Hey Charlotte hope you can put up a bird house too they are such fun to watch. Yesterday he was running off the Red Birds while she was busy at work.
Hazel I'm just "winging it" haha on the blue bird thing. I do know the size of the hole on the house is smaller than on other houses, and that you can't put the blue bird houses close together or they won't build. Loved your bird story Romeena.

Emma

March 20, 2002 - Msg 5775: Romeena, what great stories. Sounds like he was a treasure. Don't float away now. That goes for the ones in KY and TN too.
Welcome to Happy. We're Happy that you're here.;) You'll like it a lot.
Speaking of blue birds, I went to walk the furbabies and saw the first one. Kind of a rare sight. Might just put me one of those houses up.
Thanks for the coffee Rock, hope I got the right one! We'll soon find out. Hey right back at 'ya.
Hey to Emma, Asa, Mavis, Jelsik. Hazel, Charlotte, Salty Dog, and everybody!--Helen

So THANK YOU all so much for wishing me happy birthday. We had some flood damage Sunday night and cleaning that up has kept me busy. That wasn't a very pleasant way to end the weekend but it could've been worse. I got some wonderful birthday cards and gifts from my Mayberry friends, really made me feel special. Mayberry friends are the best in the world. I see there's a new Emma posting on the porch so I guess I can officially call myself the "old Emma" now. Romeena, what sweet memories you have.

March 20, 2002 - Msg 5788: Someone asked me this mornin' how the election went. I wasn't the most informed voter for this primary but there had been lots of corruption talk about our governor. Two people ran against him on the ballot. I voted for one of them and do you know the gov. still won? Go figure. It's mighty late. I'm probably the last one up again. Good night porch.
Charlotte Tucker

March 20, 2002 - Msg 5789: Hey homemaker, are ya planning on going to "Mayberry in the Midwest" this summer? I think that the hubby and Little Opie and I are gonna head out there? I am going to call for info tomorrow. Do you have the number? In case you don't it's 1-800-676-4302. Luckily for us it's just before our county fair so we will be able to
enjoy both events. Oh how I wish they could get the Darlings to sing. I'd just be pickled tink.
Hey to all.

Thats amazing how once folks get put in office, you can't hardly ever get them out Charlotte. There's a lot of that going around.
Hey AngeFan, sorry about dumping you last night, my computer locked up on me and locked up good. Thought I was gonna have to call the man. Is anyone else having problems getting on the cutlass. Everytime I try to I get an error script, and then my computer freezes up or logs off. Anyone else having problems like that.
Sure is nice to have you back with us Mavis. Them skins look to be putting quite a team together this off season. Rafe may be in for a long season, again. (snicker)

March 21, 2002 - Msg 5796: Is the diner open? Leon could go for a nice well done steak, baked potatoe, some greens & mac & cheese. But have to hurry off to church tonite so will settle for a hot dog.

March 21, 2002 - Msg 5797: Leon would also like to say that I love this site. If I ever seem to skip out of a conversation on the porch or the bulletin board it's because I'm doing all this from my job & duty calls. Don't have internet on home pc yet. Am in the office between 9:30-6 est. Good Luck to you & yours.

March 21, 2002 - Msg 5798: Hey to the porch. I remember that bluebird, Jennie. What a nice place to be in the springtime, the mountains of TN. Gosh, when you say "old Emma"..I mean when you say it OUT like that..well, it just don't sound right. I believe I'd rather not be "old Emma"..I want to be just plain Emma. I've got a good memory to share, back when I was "young Emma" and my daddy would carry me on his shoulders and we'd take walks at night in the summer and he'd show me the moon. He taught me to say "I see the moon and the moon sees me. God bless the moon and God bless me." That's one of my favorite memories of him now. And somebody sent me the moon with that poem on it for my birthday. I just LOVE it. I'm sorry that I haven't already said happy birthday to Mavis. I hope you had a HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Mavis! And I hope you'll have many more to come.

--Emma

March 21, 2002 - Msg 5799: Hey Fun Girl . .hoping to be in New Castle. that's reight before my birthday so I think it would be nice if my hubby took me up there. Have you had your IEP conf. yet? March 21, 2002 - Msg 5800: To CHAROLETT Tucker, are you the one married to the man that falls down alot? Just thought that joke might brighten you day. Sam Scott

March 21, 2002 - Msg 5801: Evenin porch! Thanks for all the Birthday wishes, guess if Emma is 'old Emma' I'll have to be 'old *Mavis' since we had birthdays on the same day. We got tons of rain, now they are calling for snow tonight! Go figger!
*Mavis

March 21, 2002 - Msg 5802: Hey new messenger 5795: Did you also post 96 and 97? You wanna us to call you Leon? Or do we already have a Leon? (I haven't been here that long myself.) Welcome! Good quotes. I like your "amenities." That's a good one, Sam Scott! I absolutely love that phone conversation between the sisters whose feet fall asleep. I 'm Charlotte (of the Buffalo Tuckers). Actually, Malcolm says he's from Charlotte. Hence, my name! Man in a Hurry! It just doesn't get any better than that! Night Mavis, Emmas (old and new), homemaker, Sam Scott, Leon?, and anyone else I missed.
Charlotte Tucker

March 21, 2002 - Msg 5803: Hey porch, off to bed, had a long day today. See ya in the morning. Hope everybody has a good Friday. Mavis, you keep that snow up there. I am ready for Spring. Nite porch--Salty Dog

March 21, 2002 - Msg 5804: Howdy, friends! My 'puter has been in the shop for a couple of days, getting a CD-RW added. Now it's got it, and I don't know what to do with it!! Dern new-fangled gadget!
Suggestion to the two Emmas... Since Emma went by two different last names on the show, why don't you two choose one and let that make the distinction? Maybe our "old" Emma could use the first one, and the "new" Emma could use the most recent one, or whatever.
Asa, thanks for your kind words about my long-winded stories. Trust me, hon, you don't want to encourage me! Us old gals can go on, and on, and on.....
Wish I could quote the scene as Andy is taking Otis's bottle away from him and escorting him to his cell. Otis has been fighting imaginary fireflies, and Andy convinces him to leave the bottle behind by telling him it draws fireflies. Otis's horrified reaction and ready agreement are just priceless. The comedy was as much visual as scripted, so a quote wouldn't do it justice. Thanks, TVLand.--Romeena

March 22, 2002 - Msg 5805: Mornin Porch, can't stay long - overworked/underpaid. Just wanted to suggest Ro, that you load the software to burn CD's (should come with a help file) - the burning process is really easy. Go to some sites that have eppisodes of TAGS, copy the files down to your hard drive, then drag/add them into the CDR program...then you have epps to watch anytime from your computer! Then you can send me some! :-) God Bless everyone!

~ Mrs. Wiley
Asa, things going downhill fast on all fronts. I'll know more after Monday. So far Mom seems OK, but hasn't gotten test results back yet (or so she says...)

March 22, 2002 - Msg 5806: Mornin porch. Things should slow down today. The coffee is on and also some hot coco since it is cold here on my end of the porch. Mrs. Rock got some bad news yesterday. She thought that she could retire in June but found out she has to teach one more semister. Mrs. Wiley I've seen some CDs that my 22 year old son has that I'd like to burn. Younguns younguns younguns. Also prayers for your mom.((((((Emmas, homemaker, Sam Scott, Mavis, Charlotte Tucker, Salty Dog, and Romeena))))))))). Got Some blueberry and banana nut muffins sitting on the counter right beside the crock. Help yourselves.

March 22, 2002 - Msg 5807: Morning Porch, You forgot me Rock. And I hate to be forgotted when food is involved. Just a small memory lapse brought on by them advancing years, I'm sure.:) Sorry that Mrs. Rock has to go a little longer.Must be tough to be prepped to retire and then find out you can't quite yet. I'm still looking at 20 years fer I can contemplate it. Oh well, thats life through and through.
I mean it Romeena, you expose them memories all you want out here, I truly love hearing them. And I bet I ain't alone.
Mrs. Wiley, I be praying extry hard for you and your Mama this weekend. I know yer job situation has been a mess fer ya fer a while now, and ya don't need that kinda stress on ya, poor dear. Hang in there, things will improve.
Hey to Charlotte, and Salty Dog, the inventor of the yaco.
Good to hear from Homemaker. Glad yer doing ok.
Gotta go slay the dragon now. Ya'll act like somebody today.
