They just looked right together. Plus there was that tawdry kiss outside the gym. HMMMM! Does that twang anyone's buds?
No need for Helen to be jealous of me. As you all know I am just so helpless and sweet. And after all, girls just wanna have fun.

And I was going to clue in Mary Wiggins on who Karen and Peggy were but Asa beat me to it. Peggy's the one who ordered snails for Andy. (He didn't eat them by the way.) I, on the other hand, love them! I think I liked Peggy better than Sharon DeSpane. And yes I remember the tawdry kiss. I'd choose Peggy or Ellie. Ellie kinda ruined the relationship when she ran for city council. Too women's libbish for my taste. Now, I'm not backwards or anything like that and don't want to start no moulage about women's lib, but it just wasn't right for a wife for Andy. There I said it and I'm not takin' it back!

Well, I never did like Ellie(y'all Ellie lovers kindly get them long poinky sticks away from my rock now!)Helen was jealous and moody,Sharon might have been too much for Andy (that KISS!) and so I guess I'd go with Peggy too. Seemed like a good ole' Southern gal. There's my two cent's worth!

Asa, when you pick up your suit from Mr. Goss, let us know so we can plan another trip to the picture show over in Mt.Pilot. We've got a few other Mayberry folks who want to go along next time so I reckon me & Salty will have to act better and not pull the " out of oil " thing on you again!

He liked everything newfangled - probably would have had a palm pilot too, for ticket writing and citation reciting!

The teachers here start at various times next week with me going in on Thursday. My son starts the day before I do - we'll be in different school systems but almost the same calendar of days off. Not looking forward to going back to the construction woes and the no contract woes. It would be nice to settle this thing before next Thursday. The teachers are boycotting the usual employee breakfast - no money for contracts then there should be no money for the breakfast. Enough of the school "bored" blues!

Where are the new porchsters hiding today - Jake, Boo, and Stubby?
And Miss Dixie Bell must be schooling since she hasn't checked in on the new sweep. . .
I swear we need a posse to keep track of everyone! :)

Yep,prayers for the twin girls.Amazing what has taken place with them, isn't it?
I have heard about the 9-11 recording, but have not heard it. Not sure if I want to. I was in Logan Airport in Boston on Sept. 6th in the exact terminal(B) the terrorists hijacked the planes out of. I am a people watcher and while waiting for my flight I saw several Arab type men walking around. No luggage-strange looks on their faces,in groups of 2 or 3.I just thought they looked suspicious for some reason. Little did I know. It was later reported that the terrorists were prowling Logan airport the week before 9-11. I will always wonder if I looked into the eyes of any of those terrorists. And I am so grateful that I got home safely!
Another recollection- I remember on the plane wondering where we were. I assumed we had to be over Virginia at that point. I looked out of the window and immediately knew we were over Washington DC because I recognized the Pentagon. I craned my neck trying to see other famous landmarks, but all I could make out was the Pentagon.I was so thrilled to see it. Gee...
Well, that's enough. Just wanted to share my thoughts.

August 07, 2002 - Msg 8347: Good afternoon all. I find myself with a few minutes to send greetings! I read a little about the tape of the high-jacking and the wife of one of the fire chiefs said she found peace hearing how calm and professional her husband sounded while trying to rescue people. My son has a line of toys called "Rescue Heroes" that have been out since before the attack and it's funny how differently I look at those "action figures" now. Those men and women in the police, firefighters, army, navy, airforce, marines, national guard, port authority as well as the "civilians" (is there such a thing in post 9/11 America) are all heroes. God bless and protect every one of them and each of us as well. Boo, you made me laugh out loud while reading your post about your friend. I am so glad we can still laugh. I remember how quiet the skies were after 9/11 and how all I did was walk around the house sighing as if to catch my breath. I wondered if we could ever laugh again. God has been merciful, however, and everyday I see His beauty and glory every where I look. GOD BLESS AMERICA

August 07, 2002 - Msg 8348: To catch you up to date Boo on the babies, doctors at Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA separated conjoined twin girls that were a year old. They were joined at basically the top of the head - each facing a different direction. They successfully separated them and they are hoping that both will survive, they were connected with bone and vessels but each had their own intact brain. A couple of weeks ago, another mother in Guatemala (that's where the first babies are from) gave birth to conjoined babies - basically two heads, two spines, one heart and they will be unable to separate them. The mother is 15 years old. It makes me thankful that mine were born healthy and normal.

August 08, 2002 - Msg 8358: Evening porch. Heres my thoughts on 9-11 and how close to home it came. Most of yall know that I am from NC. My husband went to Boston in October for a builders seminar. Well on the morning of 9-11 his bosses wife was on the phone with Logan airport getting ticket prices when all that started happening. She decided that they were going to drive after that. Also thank you Mary Wiggins for you words about the firemen and rescue workers. Being a firefighter/EMT myself I have been through and seen a lot but nothing like what those brave people went through. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for firemen since my husband was a fire cheif when we were dating and for the first few years of our marriage. It just amazes me how much publicity this has gotten the firemen. Now days you cant go anywhere without seeing something with a fireman on it. Not that I am complaining because I collect firefighter stuff. But I just hate that it took a national tragedy like that to get those people the recognition they deserve. You know what happened to me this mornin'? Well, last night at church, the preacher talked about havin' a daily devotion time and I decided to be better about it and asked the Lord to help me. Well, bright and early this mornin' while I was sound asleep, the radio came on all by itself (I hadn't set the darn alarm). Suddenly I'm layin' there with my eyes open listening to Petra (remember them?) singin'..."Brown is the color of the autumn leaves when the winter comes to the Mirron trees. There is birth, there is death, there is a plan, and there's just one God and there's just one Man who can give us life and make us grow, who can make our sins as white as snow." Well, I had to get up and pray after that, you know? I prayed for those of ya'll goin' back to school. Hope ya have a blessed day.
I need some advice from some of you mommas. My 12 month old baby girl is very possesive of her bottle and we want to get her off it because she is wakin' up at night. Beulah and I are too old to remember how to do it (get kids off the bottle, that is!). Any advice? Do ya just cut 'em off 'cold turkey' or wean 'em off a little at a time. My little ones always had to have a baba at nite time or in the middle of the nite. With my oldest, we had baby goats born and I told him the baby goats needed the baba worse than he did. That worked great and the bottle was ADIOS.
Glad to see you again Clara - glad you had some pickles. Keep waiting on them green maters to turn red here.

Clara, I'll bet your pickles are as flavorsome as can be.

August 08, 2002 - Msg 8381: Evening Porchsters! First day back at school went well, but I'm tired. Have to get used to getting up with the chickens again!

Hello to Miss Clara. Save some of those good homemade pickles for me! Sweet tea... absolutely the best, ain't it Fun Girl?

Well, I ought to be crawling back under my rock. Early to bed, early to rise, makes a possum healthy, wealthy, and wise!

August 08, 2002 - Msg 8382: Thanks for the advice, Homemaker. I only wish I had some baby goats! My seven yr. old took the "Baba" till he was two and all he ever wanted to do was drink the bottle. He is still skinny as a stick. Never did take to food too good. I really wante this one off early.--Boo

August 08, 2002 - Msg 8385: Hey everybody! Seems as if I miss a few days and miss a lot here on the porch! WELCOME BACK ((((TOM))))! We've missed you. Wecome to all of the new ones. Seems as if Asa has been kinda quiet lately. I did like Dixie Bell and just skimmed the archieves.
Clara those pickles sound gooood. Save me one. I'll save you a meatball! Have plenty.
Boo, our local theater did To Kill... this summer. It was excellent. Here in Alabama Harper Lee is one of our claims to fame. She was born here. She's in NY now, I think. She only wrote the one book. I wish she had written more, with the talent she has, seems kinda sad that she didn't.
Hopefully, I can be an "older" mom. We have a 10yr old and would like another. If God blesses us with one that would be great! If not then I'm still feel as if I couldn't be happier!
My hubby killed a 5ft. long rattlesnake day before yesterday, then yesterday, my son looked outside and slithering down the driveway was another snake (non-venomous). YIKES! He got away. Don't like them. I get the "hibbie-jibbies" very easily when it comes to snakes.
Salty Dog, God bless you and your husband. Very heroic work. As a child I wanted to be an EMT. I loved to watch EMERGENCY! I thought "Johnny" was the greatest! Does anybody else remember that show?
Well I've gone on long enough. It is good to be on the porch isn't Romeena?
Where's Mavis? New Neighbor? Have they checked in lately? Nite all---Helen

August 09, 2002 - Msg 8386: Morning Y'all! Helen, Emergency was "my" show too! That Randy Mantooth (Gage) sure used to twange my teenage buds! Ha Ha Haven't thought about that tv show (or him) in a long time. Had to chuckle when I read your post!
Asa,did Mr. Goss get all of that popcorn butter and brylcreme outta your suit? Hope he didn't give ya a hard time about it. Have Sara call me and Salty when you're ready to go back to the picture show. Anybody else wants a ride just let us know!

Have a great day!

August 09, 2002 - Msg 8387: Good morning porch! Everybody up! Possum you are up early, here I thought I was gonna get to wake everybody up. It is a cool 52 degrees on my porch this morning not used to that. I like Emergency too but I wish TV Land would still run it that and Sanford and Son. Possum you need to call me before we plan another night out with Asa. He can be a handful sometimes. Dont know how Mrs. Asa does it. Well yall have a good day. I am off to work for a few hours. But if anybody makes breakfast bring me a plate to work I'd be much oblidged. See yall later--Salty Dog

Hope everyone has a great friday.
Possum, old man Goss did get to chiding me about my suit, more so about the grass stains in them. I don't even remember how they got there.
I liked Emergency to, but them fellers didn't twang my buds, no sireeee. Now the head nurse there at Rampart was not bad for an older gal. Did you know in real life she was married to Jack Webb? See, now I learned you something, your wasn't a waste. (((((((PORCH))))))))

August 09, 2002 - Msg 8389: Mornin' porchsters! When I checked in yesterday I told you I'd share my 9/11 story, the one I'll be telling my grandkids someday. When I drove home from work that day, the skies seemed so quiet, no noise, no white jet trails or silver planes on the horizon. I thought, "it is so weird to think there's nothing up there." Then about 3 miles down the road there in the country, the fastest jet I ever saw came streaking out of nowhere and disappeared off to the east. I thought, "Hey, there's not supposed to be anything up there." An hour or two after I got home we heard on the news how Air Force One had been diverted through Omaha and back to D.C. Why, that was the one and only Mr. George Bush who went a streakin' past me! Kinda cool. That's my story. Hey Miss Clara, I'd be sort of suspicious if those pickles disappear too fast now. Did you start a scrap book for your ribbons? Hey Helen, I liked that Johnny Gage myself when I was a kid. Somehow when the reruns were on TVLand I wasn't as glued to the TV as I was as a teenager. I want ya'll to know that I went and got me a copy of TKAM from the library to take on my next vacation to Jacksonville, Florida, that begins on Sunday. My son has to show his entomology project at the state fair Sun. morning and then we're off to Sunny Florida to visit my aunt and uncle. Can't wait to go on vacation again and I can't wait to read that book! Sorry I was so long-winded.

August 09, 2002 - Msg 8390: Salty, I know Christians ain't supposed to be jealous, but when you was talkin' about 52 degrees, I WAS! It is never, and I mean never 52 degrees in the summer down here in Texas. Sure wish it was! It can't be described as anything but hot and humid where I am now. Sometimes me and my boy play Christmas music and think about Colorado just to survive. I find him sittin' in the freezer with the door open and his legs stickin' out alot, lately (and we have air-conditionin'). Poor kids around here all have faces as red as tomatoes. One thing is, when we do finally get that first cool front of the year (usually in October) everybody goes wild. You literally see adult people runnin' out in the street with their arms up in the air. Honest! The heat really does us in around here, especially in August. Well, enough about the weather, got to face the day! PS- I never watched Emergency. When was it on(what year)? Bye now...Boo

August 09, 2002 - Msg 8391: Morning Porch! Asa, glad to see you back - hope you told Mr. Goss that you were planning another movie outing, this time with your rhinestone cowboy suit! That there Emergency was my favorite show there in the early 70's. I was glad irt was on from 8-9pm, cause my bedtime was 9.

really brings back the memories~

August 09, 2002 - Msg 8392: I hate to admit that I'm old enough to have watched Emergency and to have had a crush on Gage, so I won't! I also liked the Monkee's! Here in Michigan I haven't had to turn my air on all week! Sorry to provoke jealousy, Boo. I swear the air had been running constant since late May before that, my electric company is the stock I should buy. All the fruit and vegetable markets are starting to sell the really good in season stuff, I love this time of the year! I love October even more, however.Well, all you Mayberriens, I hope every one has a great day and I'd be much obliged if you include me in on that ride to the picture show!
Greetings from the cool summer breezes of Michigan! (Had to say it again cause it feels so good!)

August 09, 2002 - Msg 8393: Randolph Mantooth. . .ahhhhhh. . . Johnny Gage. . . .that boy was just the cat's meow! And yes Asa, Dixie was married to Jack Webb but he wasn't the family type and they divorced and she married the doctor on Emergency (the gray haired doc, and he was in a lot of Police Story , This is the City!) They all got along well together which says alot for Hollywood! But Johnny Gage twanged my buds! Memories!
It has been nice weather here - cool and less humility but the humility is creeping up again. There is a chance for rain on Monday and Tuesday - I wish it would just pour down. The crops are really suffering around here.

Good to see everyone on the porch (even with Asa singing like a frog - we all managed to check in!)

P.S. I liked the Rookies too - Michael Onktean (the young single rookie, dark hair, just a plain cutey patootie!)

August 09, 2002 - Msg 8394: Afternoon porch, how are yall doing this fine Friday? Back home from work and the hibby had got home early too so he is taking me out to Lonestar tonight! Aint he sweet? Now the question is what is he wanting? I am sure it would have nothing to do with the fact that his birthday is next week now would it? I loved the reruns of Emergency. Now I dont remember it when it was actually on the air but I liked the reruns. And they are some purty firemen on there. Course firemen just kinda are purty anyway. Them and Fed Ex men too :) Well Possum are ya ready to try to handle Asa again? I told him not to be sliding down that bank at the pond but you cant tell some people nothing. Well See yall later!--Salty Dog

August 09, 2002 - Msg 8398: Hey Y'all! More about "Emergency" and no,I haven't been thinking about Johnny Gage all day! I just read all the posts about it and gotta show y'all how "trivia-savvy" I am! Yes Asa and homemaker,I knew the nurse (Julie London) was once married to Jack Webb and also to the doctor on the show. His real name was Bobby Troupe and they had a daughter named Ronnie Troup who was Chip's wife on "My Three Sons." Wish y'all could see me-I've got that smug "know-it-all Barney Fife" look on my face! Hee Hee
Salty, let Asa go sliding down them hills in that rhinestone cowboy suit that Mrs. Wiley spoke of!Maybe the seat of his britches has rhinestones on 'em too-that'll fix him! Ow!
We're having a cool spell too-it's only getting up into the high 80's. Unless you love to sweat, stay away from the Lowcountry of South Carolina from June-Sept.! Sounds like Boo gets the same type of weather in Texas. My sympathies Boo-I know what you're dealing with.
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend with made to order weather! Y'all take care now! Oh, few last minute things...

Hey Mary,Which Monkee twanged your buds? Davy was my favorite!

P.S. Charlotte, you can still go to the picture show with us even though you got a video of TKAM. You don't wanna miss seeing Asa in that rhinestone suit, now do ya?

That boy STILL twangs my buds. Woah baby! I guess that is enough on that subject cause my hubby will get jealous. I don't know why he would though, seeing as how he has this thing for Dolly Parton.

I made some sassafrass tea today and boy is it good. Talk about some sweet tea that will twang your buds. It is awesome, if I do say so myself.
Well I am gonna go for now. Take care and have a good weekend.

You never see her anymore. I don't have nothin' excitin' to say today, I'm afraid. August 10, 2002 - Msg 8414: Howdy, friends! Been busy with company last few days. Daughter, grandson, a friend of my daughter's and his daughter and a friend of hers. (Yes, I know, it's hard to follow.) Grandson is 7, and the two girls are about 14 - daughter and friend very busy trying to keep them entertained. We rode the train into Dallas on Thursday, visited West End, then took the train out to the zoo and spent several extremely hot, sweaty hours trying to get a glimpse of equally hot and reclusive animals, who had sense enough to hole up somewhere to escape the heat. Saw lots of birds and lizards, one dusty elephant, two bored giraffes (don't know whether they were selfish or not), one gorilla, the chin and paws of one sleeping lion, and that was about it. I recommend visiting the zoo in cool weather, or at least early in the morning.

Thanks for the hugs and kind words from all of you earlier. You folks are the greatest!
Boo, and Jake, what part of Texas are you from? I'm in the D/FW area.

August 11, 2002 - Msg 8417: Good Sabbath Porch!! Morning Hazel! If Asa has extra sensitive perception, you reckon he already knew what Salty and Possum had planned for the movies? I mean, with Romeena ordering pizza (mazzarella, I hope) for after the show, this sounds almost like a setup. Maybe Asa conjured up Count Iz VanTeleky and knew about me needing a hug. So many possibilities. But you are right, ol' Sig had this thing pegged years ago.

Let us know how th picture show went...'chk'!

August 11, 2002 - Msg 8418: Good morning porch! Hope you all are having a good Sabbath. Boy what a night. First of all let me just say that Asa is one more sharp dresser. From the rhinestone suit to the yellow socks even down to the purple tie with acorns. I have to say he looked good. Even if he did have goobers beanie on with it. He kept mumbling something about going down roads. Never did figure that out. Then he insisted that we go by Romeenas for pizza. And he just insisted that she show us some germs her being a nurse and all. Well things were going fine me and Poss thought we were gonna get him home early when he brought out the bongos. I never had heard Juanita played on them but he could play it. So we finally got him out and Poss dropped me off first then Asa. So I dont know if she got him home or not. My car had too much brylcream in it from it last week. So we had to take hers. Thats how he hid those bongos from us. Oh well I know I have taken up way too much room but it was a blast all in all. Just hope Asa survived it. And that Ro is a good cook too. Yall have a good sabbath and I will see yall later-Salty Dog

I must say the talk has been too 'spicy' even for me lately.... been too sick with a nasty sore throat, aches and pains, to be conjuring up old memories of tv heart throbs I had many moons ago! Anyway, it kinda takes the starch out of the whole thing when I imagine what they must look like now.... of course, if they had known us when, they'd be surprised to see we haven't changed a bit!

August 11, 2002 - Msg 8421: Mornin' Y'all. Just wanted to tell y'all that I got Asa home safe and sound. Well, let me correct that, cause Mrs.Asa was waiting up for him with her big ole' cast iron skillet. Was carrying on something awful! I heard something about " Asa! You've been carrying on with those Fun Girls again!!" and I peeled outta Asa's driveway like Gilley Walker! Asa's bongos are still in the backseat of my car-covered with brylcreme and mozzarella cheese.Wonder if Mr.Goss could clean 'em up a bit for Asa?
Salty, you still got a headache from looking at all them sparkly rhinestones on Asa's suit? Had to take two Tylenol this morning myself.
Oh, and by the way,TKAM still wasn't playing at the picture show! Another one of them Cary Grants.So... looks like we'll have to plan on ANOTHER trip to the picture show. Salty, check on Asa and get back to me,ok?

August 11, 2002 - Msg 8425: Good morning, everybody! I know, it's the Sabbath, and I'm not in church. Company still here, in and out of the house - took off for Hurricane Harbor about an hour ago, for a last fling for the kids before returning to the hill country. If you ask me, (and nobody did) I think they've gone waaaay yonder too far out to try to please a couple of pouty-faced girls, but it's no cash out of my pocket, so I keep quiet. One of the little girls is pretty sweet, the other one would benefit from some good hard work weeding a garden or something, or maybe a trip to the woodshed. She yanks her dad around like he was a puppet on a string. Guess he doesn't mind, though, he doesn't do anything about it. Anyway, it's none of my business.
I hope Asa wasn't sick from eating all that pizza. That mozzarella cheese is good, but in excess can turn you right bilious! I remember thinking that Salty and Possum might have their hands full with him before they got him home. Funny, I never figured Asa to have that little rowdy streak. Guess it just adds to his charm. He's harmless, just a little excitable when he's away from Mrs. Asa. Hope she didn't hurt him with that skillet! He's too sweet to lose.
Possum, you say there's another Cary Grant movie playing? Is it "Arsenic and Old Lace"? That's another of my all-time favorites. A truly funny, funny movie. I've seen it in several stage productions, but Cary Grant is the ultimate Mortimer. And Peter Lorre was an inspired choice for his role. Great play, great movie.
Well, off I go. Gotta find some lunch. Have a lovely day, folks. Sugarplum says hey!--Romeena
