January 15, 2004 - Msg 18503: Well it was a heartbreaking evening in the goat world last nite. I helped birth babies (one was caught in the birth canal) but unfortunately - her labor had been too long and they were born basically brain dead (lack of oxygen). We were at work and got home and tried to help but we were just too late for her. She had three and they all passed away. That is very heartwrenching to see the momma goat crying because you take away the babies. It is different when you wean them - momma is ready for them to be on their own. I tried to keep them going but it was a down hill battle. Many of our friends have had a tough time with birthing and you expect to lose one or two but not a whole litter.
You won't offend with me goat talk (especially eating them). I am hard to offend - just ask Asa! Ha Ha I am only offended when Asa tries to ride my goats.
So anyway - that is my sad tale this morning. . I only hope this day goes better!

January 15, 2004 - Msg 18508: So sad about the baby goats, HM. I knew a weinie dog once whose little puppies died before their eyes were open (my mother in law left them outside and they died from exposure--I wanted to kill her). It was one of the saddest things I ever saw watching that dog drag the blanket around that her pups slept on and she cried constantly and moved from chair to chair. It almost killed me because I had just had my first baby the day before and was having those post partum hormone rushes. I fell apart at my mother in law's house and started bawling like a baby. My husband had to take me home! I hope my mother in law felt real bad about it! hee hee

January 15, 2004 - Msg 18511: Good mornin', everyone. Sorry about being so scarce, but this has been "tune-up week" for me. Doctor's appointments all over the place, CT scan of abdomen this morning after work, also working two nights - just been a bit busy. I try to schedule all my regular medical stuff in January and July, makes it a lot easier to remember. Blood sugars are great, doctor was very complimentary. Did finally put me on Lipitor, though my total cholesterol was just 211. Says it needs to be lower for diabetics than for the general population. Heart doctor did an echocardiogram and found it much improved over the one done a year ago - only plausible explanation there is that I've been taking Co-Q-10. He agrees it could be that. Don't have the CT results back yet, but don't anticipate any problems. Praise the Lord!

Goat cheese? Did someone mention goat cheese? Yum! I love the stuff!! There are so many things you can do with it. Mix in a little dill, or some seasoned salt, or cracked black pepper, or chives, whatever - wonderful on Ritz or any buttery cracker. HM, please thank your goats for me, as representatives of the lovely critters everywhere who provide us with the basic ingredient for that wonderful cheese. Incidentally, friends, Sam's is the place to buy goat cheese. You can get it there for about a third as much as in the grocery stores.

Well, off to bed. Gotta go back to work tonight, so I've got to get some sleep. Luckily my little furry friend will be content to cuddle up and sleep right along with me, bless her little heart.

January 15, 2004 - Msg 18513: Hi Asa, thanks for the well wishes! Looks like I'm on the bench for this season and likely next. I'm rite good at cheering though. And I don't throw my popcorn on the field. Sure could use the powerful prayer support we always find here - I'm getting "Anointing of the Sick" on Saturday. Having a cervical rib resected can be tricky. Just like timers. (Them timers are tricky) If it goes well, I'll have the other side done in April. If it doesn't go well... well, I'll be lurking.

On a happier note, my new FRONT PORCH is going to get started next week! It will be glassed-in with a sun roof on one end for a plant/greenhouse type of area. Celing fan, furniture, should make for a nice breakfast area. Then we're making a berm in the front yard to hide us from the street. Palm trees, bushes, flowers, etc. Guess I'll throw a virtual porch party when it's done!

Boo, ditto. TVLand is my only TAGS source and I'll sure be glad when more b/w eps commence. I'm only about 1/2 way there with my digital collection.

MDC, That CoQ-10 is good stuff! I order it from Puritan's Pride, the vitamin/supplement mail-order people, and if you catch a sale it can be very, very cheap. I bought a year's supply of 120mg capsules for just under $100. Beats $30 for a month's supply at the grocery stores.

homemaker, I am so sorry about the baby goats. It's so hard when you lose little animals like that. My husband and I used to raise c-ocker spaniel puppies (adorable little things!) and inevitably, we'd lose one now and then, and it just breaks your heart. Ro, your reports are VERY encouraging. I used to take Co Q 10 but stopped. I think I will start back (and give it to Bruce, too). A friend's son had a heart attack yesterday and he is only 46.

The conversation about losing the animals makes me think of a movie I watched last night on Turner CLassics. It was an oldie that ya'll have probably seen called Our Vines Have Tender Grapes. I had never seen it before and really liked it. I did cry a couple of times, however. There is a scene in which a family's new barn burns down and the neighbors show up to help get all the animals out before they are killed. Most of the cows won't budge and finally have to be shot and killed so they won't suffer being burned alive. You can hear the 21 shots it took to kill them all and it made me think of how hard people must have had it back then on the farm. They didn't even have insurance. So sad.

It also said that the quotation is often mistakenly attributed to Mark Twain. Shoot, all this time I thought Calvin Coolidge said that! I still like most of the Citizens Arrest ep., Mrs. Wiley, and see your point. Andy is ever-forgiving and gentle. And, of course, Barney comes around in the end. I just wish he hadn't been quite so harsh in that one part. It seems out of character for Barney. Because you're right, he is sensitive. January 16, 2004 - Msg 18550: 'Morning, folks! pipeman, CoQ10 is actually CoenzymeQ10, and it occurs naturally in the body. It seems to have multiple functions, with one of the more important ones being that it supports and facilitates cardiac function. In the last few years, there has been a lot of mention in medical literature, indicating that taking it in supplement form provides added benefit, since many people don't make enough of it in their own body. I can very truthfully say that I have felt better and had more energy and strength since I've been taking it. My cardiologist was very skeptical about it a few years ago, but now says that the research has convinced him, and he orders it for many of his patients.

Mr D's Cuz, I do hope when you referred to taking "150" CoQ10, you meant milligrams, not pills! Or is that rattling sound I hear coming from you? I have been taking one 120mg capsule a day, but plan to increase to two a day since I've started taking Lipitor. The product info with the Lipitor says it can deplete the body's store of CoQ10, and I sure don't want to run short!

It's a lovely day here on the Dallas end of the porch. It's completely cloudy, and a slow, gentle rain is falling. The temperature is a very pleasant 66 degrees. It's one of those gray days that just manages to avoid being gloomy, but presents itself instead as an opportunity to cuddle up with your little furkid and be lazy all day. Can't do much else in the rain, right? So, here I go for some vegetable soup and a grilled cheese sandwich, a good old movie or some TAGS tapes, and most likely, a long nap. I love days like this! Rainy days are great, don't you think?

I just can't make myself eat something that I would have held and cuddled in my lap! I had pet rabbits as a child, and when my kids were growing up, we had one that lived in the house. They can be litterbox trained, you know. Rabb was like a cat - would climb up and walk along the back of the sofa until he found a pair of friendly shoulders, and would then drape himself around those shoulders like a fur piece! He was a hoot! Trailed me around in the kitchen, waiting for vegetable-trimming handouts.
As for Carol Burnett, try watching her again now that you're a bit older. She and Harvey Korman have marvelous comic talent and timing. Add Tim Conway, and even Vickie Lawrence, and things can get very funny. Certainly there's no comparison, but her show is a bit like TAGS, in that the more you watch it, the more you see and appreciate the talent behind it.

Well, guess I'd better take my Christmas tree down. I always hate to do it, it's so pretty, and the lights give such a lovely glow to the room. If I leave it up much longer, though, people will start to look at me funny! Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

January 17, 2004 - Msg 18577: Hey, Spot! That veggie dinner sounds wonderful. I love veggies. Could we fry some of that cabbage? I like it boiled, but I loooove it fried! Especially if you start out with a couple of slices of bacon, and then fry the shredded cabbage in the bacon grease. But then, I guess it's not a true "veggie" dinner, is it? Oh, well, what's a couple of bacon slices among friends? Fresh spinish is good cooked that way, too. Both spinish and cabbage need a dash of vinegar/pepper sauce at serving time, though.

Does anyone else like jigsaw puzzles? I love them, and am working on a very nice one right now. It's a montage of pictures of Texas wildflowers. Sure is pretty. It's 1000 pieces so it's taking a while, but that's okay. I usually work with 750 pieces because that size fits the sunroom table better, but this one was too pretty to pass up. If anybody wants to drop by and help me, you're welcome. Got a good view of the backyard wildlife while I'm working, so it's fun. When we get tired of the puzzle, we can go down to the drugstore for some ice cream.

January 17, 2004 - Msg 18581: You sure made me hungry, Ro. I love veggies best with some sweet cornbread and butter (actually I use Fleishmann's olive oil spread--tastes like butter but no trans-fats). I thought of you today when I saw a fellow buying a big screen TV at Walmart. I think it was one of those plasma-things. By the looks of the gentleman I am sure he is one of those "snowbirds" who lives in an RV. He was wearing a fishing hat, shorts and a shirt covered with blue marlins. I am wondering where he is going to fit that TV.

I also thought of Homemaker when I saw some goats. The were mostly white with reddish markings and long ears that hang down. They were pretty big but not as big as HM's goats. Sure were pretty, though and I am sure one of them was pregnant.

Well, I will be staying at my mom's for about a week because my dad is out of town and mom can't stay alone for long. I will still be checking in from time to time but you won't hear from me as much.

Great food, too.

It's COLD here on the north Texas porch today, in the low 40's. Windy and damp, just chilled me right through when I went outside to fill the feeders in the back yard. Haven't gotten warm since. It was nearly 80 yesterday afternoon! No place but Texas. I wish somebody would quit talking about the weather and do something about it instead. Wonder if Calvin Coolidge would have had any ideas?

Hmmm. I don't even have any visitors at my feeders. I guess they're all holed up in their nests, trying to stay warm. Can't say as I blame them, that's what I'm gonna do today. I think I'm going to skip going to the drugstore for ice cream. Maybe next weekend.

January 19, 2004 - Msg 18600: Congratulations, Bulbsnatcher! Your family and your lungs will thank you for it!

Speaking of goats(no I'm not calling you a goat, Bulbsnatcher:), there's just been alot of talk about them lately), I just read about something that happened, or has been happening, about two hours south of where I live. It's pretty sad and I don't even know if I want to talk about it, but here I go and I hope it's not too graphic. It seems a goat farmer has been charged with torturing and killing his own goats. You know what, as I was typing this I decided maybe I won't say anymore and I'll let you people decide if you want to hear it, but it involves mother goats and baby goats and letting college kids buy goats to do things to them(not for school credit), even though the farmer said they were dead. But why would college kids or anyone buy dead goats? Anyway, that's all I'll say for now. Sorry if that sounds like a teaser; I don't mean it to be.
Anyway, in other news, we received an unexpected ice storm saturday morning that covered everything and is still covered as I speak. Well, some of the roads are clear but alot of them and the sidewalks are still coated. It hasn't been warm enough during the day to melt it yet. I don't really mind it as long as I don't have to drive anywhere, especially on back roads. It makes me want to get out a skateboard and go sliding(sitting down of course) down the curvy sidewalks up at the middle school like me and my brothers used to do when we were younger and we would get an ice storm. It didn't seem to matter how cold it was either, you just wanted to be out in it. You don't think about the cold when you're having fun, and maybe there's a lesson in there somewhere for all of us, but I'll be danged if I can find it! :)
Have a good night everyone, and sorry if I upset you with the goat thing.

The babies that have been turned out are sooo cute. I just love to watch them play.

I am sad about the Colts. My youngest said that it was against the law for girls to watch football. It is a boys sport and besides - Kim Possible and The Proud Family were on Disney - he wanted his cartoons! It was too funny!

It's cold and white around these here parts, but it sure is pretty! I think we will be spared any more snow for a couple more days.

Sorry about those Colts. They made a run at it in the end though, didn't they?! Some good games yesterday. Today I get to watch my Pistons at 3:00. They have a matinee game on account of it is Martin Luther King Jr. day! They are playing one of them Texas teams. You know, the one that won the N.B.A. championship last year? I wonder if Boo and Ro know anything about that team? You were so fortunate to have David Robinson there in Texas. Now that is a man of God! I was very pleased when they won last year, because some folks weren't giving them credit for their other championship.

I sure wish I knew how to get the program schedulers at T.V. Land or Nick at Nite to put the full, black and white eps on, but alas, I have no clue! I guess time will take care of that.

My little boy is just starting a basketball program organized by a group named Upwards. Has anybody heard of it? It seems just wonderful to me. This program teaches sports from a Christian perspective, and has some wonderful ideas and tools to use. My daughter played organized sports for years, and we weren't always happy with some of the teams, coaches, atti-tudes, etc., but this looks like a great way to teach a young-un how to compete, how to face losing...and winning, how to be a part of a team, lots of good stuff.
