PIPEMAN.. the Hendrick cars are running at Atlanta ,life has to continue after even such a large loss as the Hendricks .There is to be a press conference Friday at Atlanta with the Hendrick drivers , if Rick Hendrick stays in racing after lossing his son and brother is not known yet ,but he has two teams in the top 5 in the points and a good chance of Jimmy Johnson winning the championship ,my guess is he wont do anything different until the end of the season ,if then .

October 28, 2004 - Msg 24663: I know no one else out there is from VA..but is anyone familiar with car seat laws. In VA, a child must be in a rear facing seat until they are 1 and 20 lbs. I couldnt get in touch with anyone at the State Police Office. I want to turn mine baby around. I am sure it would be fine because she is the size..26lbs and probably 32 inches or so..but she wont be 1 year until Nov.10. Yea, Yea, I know, its just two weeks away, so go ahead and turn her around..but I'd just hate myself if anything were to happen and she werent in there legally the right way. Someone let me know if you know any info on that.

Ya'll done good on the car color guessing, but RevJr you shoulda gone with your gut feeling, it's black with grey interior. My sister drives the yellow car, an RX8, same yellow as Tweety Bird. I'm gonna get some email read & check the Discovery Channel tv line up, I started watching a show last night on Alaskan King Crab Fishing & they didn't finish it, gotta see if it comes on again, or if I'm just gonna be left hanging. Would you all please pray for my DIL's mom, who is also my friend? She had a flu shot, wasn't feeling well, got dizzy and fell coming down a staircase, and broke her hip. She's very fit, an avid golfer, very active, and I'm sure will do fine, but this has really shaken her up.

Mavis, I wish I could bring the Plum to you. I keep her very clean, and combed out well, but a professional "makeover" would be so nice. BTW, do you know of anything that would encourage the "quick" in her toenails to retreat a bit? The pink goes 'way down in her nails, so even when they're clipped, they're still pretty long. She walks on carpet or smooth tile all the time - very rarely goes outdoors, so they don't get much natural wear.

Well, I think I'll go and try to rake up a few leaves. Asa, I can't imagine that you've got snow falling!! It's a bit cooler here than it is down at Boo's, but it's still very pleasant, at 79 degrees. I'm not ready for it yet, but in a few weeks, could you send some of that snow down here? I put my mom in a wheelchair and my sister and I drug mom and dad down to the courthouse to vote today. Lots of folks around here are voting early to avoid the long lines on Tuesday. I'm glad I got it over with and I have been very pleased with the way folks down here have been turing out to vote already.

I decided to come home tonight after I put mom to bed. I missed my husband and wanted to sleep in my own bed. Ya'll wouldn't believe it but I actually forgot my husband's birthday yesterday! He came home early yesterday when I was getting ready to go to my dr's appoinment and when he walked in I just looked at him and said, "What are you doing here? Don't you know I have an appointment?". Poor baby had come home early because it was his birthday and I didn't even remember it. Shame on me! I'll have to make it extra special next year (that is, if I remember it! heehee).

Hey, I saw an old movie called The Day The Earth Stood Still (from the 50's) and a younger Aunt Bee was in it. I didn't even notice until my son yelled, "Hey, that's Aunt Bee!".

Well, my son said the ghost trail thing was not so scary. A guy with a chainsaw jumped out at them or something. Glow bowling is a big deal around here. The bowling alley has lights sort of like the crystal balls the roller rinks used to have, regular lights are dim, this smoky mist fills the air, and they play loud music and bowl. It's from 10:00 to 11:30. Teeny-boppers 11-15 love it. It did look pretty fun. See ya'll tonight . I'll have to pop in before and after I chaperone the kids school dance. October 30, 2004 - Msg 24714: Good Afternoon Porch Friends!

I hope every one is doing well today. It looks just gorgeous out my window, but man, is the wind blowing! All those beautiful leaves, whoosh!

It sure is going to be interesting to see what happens next Tuesday. Maybe we should have a contest guessing what DAY we will actually know who won! I am going to guess November 12th! I think it may take about 10 days to sort through it all! And I also figure that no matter who wins, about half the people will be glad!

My computer has been soooo naughty lately. I can only occasionally get on, and I am still trying to get a hold of someone I can trust to fix things. It has been more of a hassle than it's worth!

My little Opie has decided on Trick or Treating as a Knight in Shining Armor! (I hope one day he will appear that way to some young woman!) He only goes to a few neighbors homes, and then he goes to Grandma and Grandpa's so they can enjoy the day right along with him!

I may have to borrow that Ghost and Mister Chicken movie, sounds like a fun time around Halloween. Did anyone notice that To Kill A Mockingbird was on Thursday night? I love that movie, and it always reminds me of Boo, now! By the way Boo, it is in the 60's and sunny here today! Just beautiful! ;)

Happy Halloween eve!

In fact, I just noticed that the kids across the street are soaking wet and playing with the water hose. I just shook my head and thought, 'How COULD this be happening at the end of October?!'. I feel like I am in the Twilight Zone, which is pretty fitting, I guess, considering Halloween and all. The poor kids around here will be too hot to wear their costumes. So yes, pipeman, I'm still dashing through the heat!

OK Charlotte, I'll meet you at the Remshaw House. I'll bring the caramel apples.

Hey Message #24708, WHAT?

Alyce, I did feel pretty bad about missing Bruce's birthday but he took it well. He just said it was okay. I am lucky because he bought himself a birthday present last week. He ordered a new scope for his rifle (yipee--guess you have to be a man to understand that).

Better go...got a family function to attend. My husband's brother eloped yesterday (he is 50) so we are meeting to congratulate him and his new wife, Mona. We like her alot. Later, Buddies!

October 30, 2004 - Msg 24716: Pretty savvy of old OBL to surface right now, just before our election, and try to tell us how to vote. Oh, he didn't name names, of course, but his implication was clear. Call off your bloodhound, and just maybe we'll leave you alone. Something like that. Ha! I hope we find him soon, and send him on his way to seek out his 72 dark-eyed maidens. Am I the only one who thinks that Islamic men are obsessed with s-x, and know that their countrymen are not to be trusted, so they shroud their women under tents, with little peepholes so they can see out? Why, their idea of heaven even includes the aforementioned 72 virgins. Personally, I believe God's heaven is going to transcend such as that. I'm sorry that OBL's wouldn't, if it existed, which of course it doesn't. Oh, one more thing. I wonder how much pork rind in a scattergun it would take to put his lights out?

Mercy, I sound awfully mean today, but I've had about enough of this nonsense. I'm all for racial profiling at the airport and anywhere else that would be appropriate. If it looks like a duck (read "terrorist") and it talks like a duck and it smells like a duck, it's very likely a duck.

Just running through to say Hi and that I wouldn't be caught out at the Remshaw place this year!! Asa nearly scared 10 years off my life~ (then again I could stand to loose a few years!) No comments ASA! All those noises and cobwebs... No thanks, I'll have the after party refreshments here at our house. The bondfire is burning and the marshmallows are ready to toast. Might even fix a pot of hot chocolate and warm some cider.
Good to read all the postings. Somethings never change, and that's good. ~New Neighbor

CT Thank you for your kind words. You have no idea how you have lifted my spirits. I've been having trouble w/ people that I thought were my friends this week and you made me feel good about myself again. Isn't it sad that other people have to bring someone down just b/c they can. October 31, 2004 - Msg 24723: What a nice way to think of the election results, Mary Wiggins! Very diplomatic.

Speaking of the election, if that myth is true that if the Redskins win in the game before the election then the incumbent will win the Presidency, then even though I am from Wisconsin I have to hope that the Packers lose today, since that is who they are playing. Sorry home team, but I have to wish that. For the good of the country.:)

Hazel, you KILL me! That line from the Remshaw episode is one of my all time favorite TAGS moments. The way Barney says, "Gomer...Gomer...Gome...."--hysterical. I'm so glad you posted it because I had forgotten about that one. Sometimes I can just picture you sitting there watching TAGS with your little notebook and pencil, jotting fown the good lines.

Alyce, my husband likes those nice Buck knives that you can get engraved and he recently bought himself a neat pen carved out of deer antler. Does your husband have a mosquito suit for hunting? I don't know if you need them where you live but they sell them here and they are pretty neat. An XBox is a nice gift. We won one a couple of years ago at a raffle for the school and my son and husband like playing it together..they also have a hunting game made for XBox that I am getting Bruce for Christmas.

I want all you nice, cool folks to know its in the 90's AGAIN today and no cloud cover, either. Hot, hot, hot. It sure doesn't feel like Halloween here in South Texas....now the Fourth Of July, maybe.

See ya at the Remshaw house. Don't forget The Golden Arm!

Heard something nice today via a lady at church who is good friends with the doctor who performed Laci's open heart surgery. He told her that he tries not to get attached to his patients, but he couldn't help it with little Laci. He said he just KNEW he had to fix that baby. He also told his friend that Laci was smiling and happy right before they put her under for surgery. That was so good to know that and how he felt about Laci. So many doctors come across as cold and uncaring, you know? Just thought I'd share this with y'all-heartwarming,for sure and no pun intended!

November 01, 2004 - Msg 24739: Good Mornin'! That was some night at the Remshaw place. Did anybody see any ghosts?

Yesterday was a full day for me! Church and fall festivals, etc...then my friend was in a jam and wanted me to keep her two children last night while she worked so the activities didn't end until pretty late last night and my 3 yr old was the last to finally fall asleep (must have been all the candy)! Do ya'll remember what it was like when you were kids and you came home after an evening of trick or treating and emptied that bulging bad of goodies? I still remember going through all the loot and sorting out my favorites. Can you remember what your favorites were? When I was a kid we didn't get all the good chocolate like the kids get now. I loved the round, purple gumballs and Sugar Babies and Slowpokes. Remember those Jolly Rancher sticks, they were kind of long and flat and came in green apple and cherry? Remember the wax lips and orange wax harmonicas?

Ok, no more time to stroll down memory lane. I've got to take my dad to the Neurologist this morning...hope they can help him. See ya!

We also used to get homemade popcorn balls, apples and pennies!
There was one house on our block where the lady gave out full size Baby Ruths! Ah, the good old days!
MDC

November 01, 2004 - Msg 24746: I remember the homemade popcorn balls. They were good! And did any of you ever pull taffy? My mom used to mix up a batch of taffy, make everyone wash their hands really, really well, and then butter their hands and pull the taffy until it was firm. Then she'd stretch it out into strands, cut them with a buttered knife, and wrap the pieces in buttered wax paper. Good! Probably germy as could be, but we didn't care and no one ever got sick.

I spent the evening with my son and his family, and the little boys were so cute. One was dressed like a monkey, and the other was Spiderman, complete with little foam inserts that made his muscles, even a little six-pack of abs. Hilarious! My 6'5" son wore a "fat man suit", an inflatable thing that made him look hugely fat, and he was a hoot! He even practiced a waddling walk. Too funny!!

November 01, 2004 - Msg 24747: Oh, MDC! I remember candy cigarettes, and loved them as a kid. No, I didn't become a smoker. However, I had fun with them (the candy ones) once as an adult. When I first went to work as a nurse, 25 years ago, smoking was still allowed everywhere, including in hospitals. Patients and visitors smoked in their rooms, and nurses and doctors smoked in the break rooms. The nurses who smoked took breaks about every hour, sitting in the break room for five or ten minutes, while the rest of us confined our break to the one paid ten-minute break every morning or afternoon, our choice. No one ever said anything to the smokers, probably because our manager smoked as well. One day I had had enough of watching their patients while they took breaks, so I brought a pack of candy cigarettes to work with me. At one point, I went to the break area and sat there with that thing hidden in my hand. Our manager came by, and had the nerve to remind me that I had already taken my allowed break, and didn't I have something to do? I just smiled at her, put my candy cigarette in my mouth, and informed her that I was just "grabbing a quick smoke", the phrase used by everyone else to justify their breaks. Her jaw hit the floor, and my job hung in the balance for a few seconds, then she burst out laughing. She just closed the door, walked away laughing and never mentioned it to me again, but I think the point was well taken, because I did notice that the smoke breaks for everyone else because less frequent. I'm sure the other staffers wouldn't have appreciated my action, but the manager apparently didn't tattle on me, because no one ever mentioned it.

We're cool and rainy here in north Texas, and my yard is loving it. Pansies are perking up, brugmansia has about fifty bloom pods on it - will be spectacular in about three days, when the sun comes out. Well, off I go. Everyone have a good day. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

I think banning smoking in public places is the best thing yet too..and my husband works for a major tobacco company. (of course, they do own and make other things)

Loved your smoke break story too, Ro! I have been to a taffy pull but its been close to 25 years ago. Lots of fun!

I remember purple cows - like sugar daddy's but grape. I always liked candy cigarettes too - had lots of family that did the real thing, but it never appealed to me.
My husband worked for a wholesale company that canned/bottled sodas when he was a teen and he said that the owners would give out cans of Dr. Pepper to treaters. We've never had a treater in the time we've lived in our house (almost 13 yrs) but we do buy something just in case - this year we bought some full size Crunch bars and 8 oz. Dr Peppers. I guess I'll have to take care of those later. ; ) My hubby also asked if I ever went out with two masks - to go back to houses that had good stuff without being suspect. Never did.

Hope everyone's feeling better at your house, Alyce. Sorry to hear what you all have been going through.

Oxygen in Use!" that we put on the room doors where appropriate. Can you imagine that it was ever like that? A few years ago, though, long after the smoking ban went into effect, we had a patient who would light up in his room, and he was on oxygen! We caught him several times, read him the riot act, took his cigarettes and matches away, but it did no good. He'd get his friends to bring him some more. He managed to keep from blowing his room up, but about a week after he was discharged he was brought into the ER with second and third degree burns on his face and chest. He tried it at home, with his bottled oxygen, and set himself on fire. Isn't that sad? That's one powerful addiction.
