March 26, 2006 - Msg 36181: Afternoon Y'all!
This might be a little long, sorry.
Asa- There is something called vax-D that pulls you apart and puts more room for the disc. My husband tried it years ago and it worked like a charm. I've had 2 discectomies and wouldn't have a fusion. Sleep w/a pillow under/between your knees. Alternate b/w ice and heat every 15 min. when its hurting really bad. Hope that helps. Will pray!
Dixie- I'm glad Ella came back.
Hey to everyone else. APB still on Shazam.
Even though (or b/c) I went to prechin' this morning, and it was a good one on the Holy Spirit, I feel the need to vent a bit. On the way to my megachurch this mornin', I was turning the dials for some Southern Gospel (Andy style) and didn't find any. Instead I found some country songs that were AWFUL! I was so upset by their lyrics I wanted to scream. Now, by most people I am considered young (late 20s-a lady never reveals tha actual age). But, I thought I was listening to a rap/rock singer with a hillbilly accent! Its the same way on CMT. I had to block that when I caught my 8 year old smiling at a half-nekkid woman. My grandmother, whom my husband said I'm turning into everyday, says that she couldn't conceive raising children in this world and I'm slightly inclined to agree with her, except that I'm actually raising one (plus 2 stepchildren in the summer).
I'm off the soapbox/pulpit if you may. Oh, Matlock! Talk to ya later!
Blessings to you and yours,
~Lucy

March 26, 2006 - Msg 36183: MDC, I'm surely sorry about the job situation, but I feel confident that something will turn up. God has a plan, even when we don't. As for johnny cake, it's a kind of cornbread, generally baked in a skillet. At least that's my take on it.

Asa, I sympathize with you and your back problems. I don't have a herniated disc, but do have a malformed facet joint in my lumbar spine that causes me a lot of pain. Surgery would help, but so would losing some of my "up front" weight. I lost it a couple of years ago, and back pain improved dramatically. I've gradually put the weight back, and the pain has returned as well. You, on the other hand, with a herniated disc will probably have pain no matter what. My father had one for years, suffered greatly with it, and refused surgery. My mother was upset with him for refusing, but the doctor told her not to worry, and I quote, "When the pain gets bad enough, he'll change his mind." Eventually, that was true. Daddy had the surgery, and in two days was up and walking comfortably, pain free. In fact, two hours after the surgery, before he had even gotten out of bed, he said he hadn't been that comfortable in years. Everyone has to make their own decision based on their level of pain, their tolerance for pain, and the degree of incapacity they're willing to endure. I'll pray for you, friend.

Little Bentley is doing well, has apparently survived the attack of parvo, and my son and DIL will be bringing him home this afternoon. I'm really glad, because I was ready to go after that irresponsible breeder with legal action. He has agreed to pay the vet bills, and since the puppy survived and they'll be keeping him, no one expects the breeder to refund the purchase price. Had the puppy died, then we'd have gone after that as well. He was not cheap. Anyway, praise the Lord, our new little furkid is recovering.

Well, gotta run. Kitchen is a mess, and a friend is coming over to watch some TAGS. Guess I'd better get a shovel and start cleaning! (ha) Where is Otis when you need him??

Sugarplum says 10-4! --Romeena

March 26, 2006 - Msg 36184: Asa, now that I think back, the surgery my father had was a micro-discectomy, not a fusion. Would your doctor consider that as a potential fix for you? --Romeena

March 26, 2006 - Msg 36190: Hi, I'm back from my little vacation and looks like I missed alot around here in three days! Glad to hear Ella is back, Bentley is better, and Lucy's son's bully took a powder. Also sorry to hear about the job situation, MDC. Can just imagine how stressful that could be. Prayers for you and your wife.

ASA, what kind of symptoms do you have with a herniated disc? I am starting to think I might have a disc problem but I'm not sure. I have an area to the left of my spine at about the middle of my back that goes numb and an area on the top my right thigh that goes numb when I am on my feet alot. I know I must have sustained some damage to my back from the years of working as nurse. Thanks for asking about my dad, ASA. Upon questioning my Dad further I found out that he had slept in the recliner that night with his feet hanging down! I told him never to do that again! I took him to the dr anyway and found out he has a sluggish thyroid and his blood pressure is a bit high so we are treating that.

We had a nice time in San Antonio (the weather was gorgeous). We visited the Natural Bridge Caverns and I almost had a coronary climbing out of that thing! Neat to see, though. We went to a wild life refuge that you drive through with your windows down and feed the animals. The kids loved that but Erin absolutely freaked when the ostrich stuck its head in her window. The poor kid jumped out of her carseat in record time and was on the other side of the car while the ostrich ate the food pellets out of her carseat (Erin screaming the entire time). It was fun, the kids especially like the big Rhino who was sleeping with his big bottom facing the road and passed gas just as we passed by! They were hysterical with laughter. We saw alot of exotic animals that would come up to the car and take food out of our hand.

Friday night we went to the Mission Drive-In and I thought of you guys. The drive-in was just as I remembered with the dark, out of focus movie. Neat! The kids enjoyed it alot. I was dissapointed that there were no cartoons during the intermission but there were some great, retro snack bar commercials.

We ate at the Alamo Cafe last night, RO. Pretty good and those tortillas!

Well, better go get the kids to bed...back to school tomorrow. Take care,

Boo

I never sought a second opinion because I was not considering surgery. I did go to physical therapy though and that at least got me to where I could move around.
Lucy, I'd love to hear more about your husbands treatments. This place that is advertizing has some kind of machine that somehow decompresses your disc. They claim it is not painful, uninvasive, and was a result of NASA research. They claim an 86% success rate. Does that sound like what your husband had?
They are calling for some spring like weather for us today and tomorrow. Another storm at mid week but clearing out by the weekend and then maybe nice spring like stuff for a while. Yipee!
Well it's Monday. Whats the special at the diner? It ain't that boiled cabbage is it?

Hey KY Girl, sounds like your kids are doing great, so happy to hear it!

March 27, 2006 - Msg 36207: By the way, the only problem with the Drive-in was the movie we saw. It was the only one that was PG so we chose it. It was called Failure To Launch. In case you are thinking of seeing it, do yourself a favor and save your money for a cup of coffee at Starbucks or something. It Stank with a capitol "S". About 15 minutes into the movie we had to turn off the sound due to the language and Bruce and I watched it without sound while the kids played in the back of the Suburban. Well, I say we watched it but I just kind of stared at the stars and repeatedly told the kids to hold it down. I think I will email the drive-in and suggest that they show at least one kid-friendly movies on one of the four screens each week.

Every time I say that I think of Andy teaching that couple to be polite to eachother repeating, "Mornin' Dear, Mornin' Honey". Wasn't that a good ep?
Tom- Good luck with your test.
Asa- that sounds quite a bit like what my husband had done. Its not very painful at all. I had it done also for maintenance after my surgeries, but my husband had it and he didn't have to have any surgeries at all. Good luck
Big Maude- Good Monday to you too.
Spot- Sounds great, but most things sound good when I'm not cooking them or doing the dishes!
Boo- Hubby & I decided to wait until that comes out on video anyhow, but now we may not even do that, thank you.

Everyone have a wonderful day!

March 27, 2006 - Msg 36212: Good morning everyone. Wow, it took quite awhile to skim through the archives after I've been "gone" for four days. (And, for those wondering, the upstairs never did get painted.)

BIG MAUDE: Welcome.

LUCY: I must have missed your post telling what happened with your son, though I read some posts referring to it. Is everything okay now?

MDC: So sorry about your job. Just remember that the Lord has a plan for you, and he never heaps more on us than we can handle. It's often frustrating not always knowing or understanding what He has in store for us but you can be sure it's the exact right thing, at the exact right time.

ASA: I hope you get your back straightened out. That pesky spine can certainly cause all sorts of discomforts and pains when the smallest thing is out of whack.

TOM: I pray that your tests go well.

BOO: Do you have to talk about Terry Bradshaw in the natural this early in the morning? Talk about sour stomach.

DIXIE and ROMEENA: Great about your little furry friends.

I've had a hard time of it the last week and could use some prayers. A mdeication I'm taking is making it difficult to stay alseep at night. I've been averaging about 4-5 hours the last week or so and am wearing down. Hopefully, things will get worked out this week, but I'm really starting to feel sleep deprived. (I guess I'm getting a taste of what the Mrs. must feel like sometimes.)

I may be tired, but I'm still chipper, so y'all have a simply wonderful day!

Me-They
"No coffee, tea or punch, thank you." (I'm trying to cut back on caffeine.)

March 27, 2006 - Msg 36213: Ha, sorry Me-They! Didn't mean to give you a stomach ache. heehee Sorry about the sleep thing. I can surely relate. I don't think I slept for three years after each of my kids were born! I kind of lived like the walking dead. Prayers that things get better soon.

SPOT: Guess what?? When I got off the porch this morining and checked my emails I had received the houseplans that Kenny did for us. It is just the prelim but it was fun looking at it. It is bigger than it should be, though and we will have to decide where to trim some square footage but it is pretty close to what we wanted. I am going to have him put in a few more windows and do a few changes in the kitchen. We decided to do all the bedrooms downstairs and have a bonus room upstairs that we can use for something later. Can't wait!..this will be the first time I ever lived in a new house.

Yes, Lucy, I think you would be sorely dissapointed in Failure To Launch. It was pretty decadent with no moral value I could see. I just don't understand the way single people are portrayed in movies as having s#x with anyone they meet. I hate it because of the message it sends to young people. Lord help this country.

Gotta scoot,
Boo

March 27, 2006 - Msg 36214: Boo, I can't wait until Narnia comes out on DVD on 4/4. I will definitely get that for Bryson's Easter basket. It was a wonderful movie for anyone who hasn't seen it.

March 27, 2006 - Msg 36217: ASA: I just happened to think, maybe you should get your chin harnass back from Barney. That may solve your back problems and make you taller to boot. Then, you could lend it to HOMEMAKER. (I'm not making light of your pain; just couldn't resist trying to make you chuckle.)

LUCY: I loved the Narnia books as a kid. As an adult, I discovered C.S. Lewis' other Christian writings. If you haven't had the opportunity to read them yet, I recommend his "Mere Christianity" and "Screwtape Letters." They are easy to read, thoroughly interesting, and spiritually enriching books. They are continuously in print so you can get them at bookstores anywhere and libraries usually have copies.

Me-They, I'm sure you've tried every home remedy in the book, but just in case - here's a few: Milk or other dairy product consumed at bedtime, turkey (especially the dark meat) eaten at bedtime, a long walk in a quiet location at dusk, then a warm bath before bed, soft music or recorded nature sounds, room comfortably cool - a too-warm room will disturb your sleep. I hope some of these will be helpful. Sorry you're having problems. Insomnia can be a self-perpetuating thing - it produces anxiety which keeps you from sleeping! Talk about a Catch-22!

It could be that it wouldn't mix with some of my current meds so I am going to wait and ask my doctor about it at my next visit.

You're repeating yourself, REV. Glad you had fun with the cat (your secret is safe with us).

Me-They and Lucy, I read some of the Narnia Chronicles when I was 12 and loved them, especially the one called A Boy and His Horse (I think). Loved L, W, and Wardrobe too, of course. As an adult I read Screwtape Letters but I think it is the only one I have read, surprisingly. Before I had children, I was a voracious reader of non-fiction Christian literature. MDC, its true about the movies. It seems they just crank out rubbish as fast as they can get it in the theaters to make a buck. While I'm on the subject of entertainment, I want to say that I am absolutely sick to death of the "F" word. I just get basic cable but am constantly seeing people saying that word. They beep it out but you can still tell what is being said. That used to be a word you just never heard. Like Raphie said in A Christmas Story, "It was the mother of all dirty words!". Now it is about as common as "darn". Ok, off the soap box (clump).

I think I will turn in early. Good night

Boo

March 28, 2006 - Msg 36247: Hello dear friends...nope, I have not fallen off the edge of the earth, tho at times I feel like I have. I am in my own place now....the divorce will be final in mid April. This has been so hard for me. Kyle is a freshman in high school now and is having some anger issues, so prayers about that will be appreciated.

My little niece Rosa was diagonsed autistic last summer and they are making arrangements to put her in a speech and language intensive preschool here in the school district. I am not sure you all will remember that I was not pleased with special services here in the district. (Kyle is hearing impaired) But the teacher whose class they are putting her in is AWESOME. Kyle was in her speech and language kindergarten and she is so great. We go next week to the school and visit the class room...just to check it out. I plan to take photos of Kyle and show Mrs. Probasco how grown up he is now.

fungi and i remain friends which I think may make it harder to really realize it is over. This has been so hard on me. The bipolar is in full fury and I am having trouble with depression and mood swings. Prayers about that will be appreciated.

Asa, are they thinking of doing a fusion on you? Please realize this is a very serious surgery and takes a LONG time to recover. I had that surgery in 2002 and if you all recall it was very ROUGH. I tried chiropractic, massage, and many different things. To be honest, looking back I am not sure I would go the surgical route again. By all means, get a second opinion, and pray about the situation. After all, God is the great physician.

I plan on making my presence known around here a bit more often. Sure do miss you all and our support group here. Has anyone seen BDJ lately? I am hankering for some mulberry squeezings. Does he still deliver?

Sad about Don Knotts....such a talented man. At least he did what he enjoyed up to the very end. We should all take a lesson from that.

Hugs to my porch friends..

So Mavis, did all them visitors leave town? Things back to normal? Glad to hear your sisters tests came back benign. Any luck getting your Mom's house sold?

Boo, I'm glad your Dad's problems was no more serious than sleeping funny. I bet your getting excited about building.

Tom, I pray your tests will all come out ok. Let us know how they do, and what we can do to help.

I failed to mention that my church friend came through his neck surgery ok last week. He begins chemo treatments soon. Thanks for the prayers, more would be appreciated. He still has a long road back.

Rev, you crack me up with your story about the cat. They had a story on the news Sunday about a house cat that was the fattest thing I have ever seen. 41 pounds! Mercy sakes.

Spot, good dinner last night. I ate mine and Mavis' too.

Me They, why didn't you get the painting done? Sorry your not sleeping well. I went through that bad about a year ago after my Dad passed away. Dog tired at night and would fall asleep right off, and then at 12:30 am every night I'd wake up and not be able to get back to sleep again. It was strange. I could almost set my watch by what time I'd wake up.

MDC, now that you have had some rain there, have you gotten any more? I know southern Utah had a very dry winter, but the last few weeks the storms have been getting them good and they have almost caught up to normal.

Well best get off to work. Got a big day planned. Hope all goes like it's supposed to. Hope y'all have a good day. Can't wait till tonight. Going to Thels with a bag of fudge and watch that Dr. show on tv.

March 28, 2006 - Msg 36254: Good morning everyone. It's overcast in the mid-Atlantic today, but the temperature is nice, real nice.

Thanks everyone for prayers. Last night was a little bit better sleep-wise. I really think my problems are linked to a medication I started taking a few weeks ago. I was taking it in the morning and two days ago switched to taking them in the afternoon. Hopefully it will have some effect. ROMEENA: I've tried just about all teh hoem rememedies you suggested. Like ASA, I have absolutely no trouble going to sleep and sleeping for a few hours, but then it's like an alarm goes off in my head and I'm awake. After that I can sometimes doze for a few minutes at a time, but for the most part I'm awake. It wierd because it's like my body is dog tired but my mind is going a mile a minute. Anyway, I feel a little better today but still feel kinda "fuzzy."

DIXIE: Yes, material from original recordings (including liner notes) is a primary source for a study of the material itself.

SPOT: Sorry, there weren't any leftovers from last night's dinner. All I have for lunch is a banana and a frozen Stouffer mac'n'cheese, but I'm willing to share. (I was in a big hurry this morning.)

March 28, 2006 - Msg 36255: Forgot...

FUNGIRL: I don't think I've had the pleasure; it's very nice to make your acquaintance.

MAVIS: A body can't get used to just a few hours sleep a night. It might be able to cope with it for awhile but can't exist on it forever. It's a fact that habitual sleep shortage can cause all sorts or ailments and will shorten your life (which my wife reminds me of every time I get the "bathroom call" from one of our kids in the middle of the night). I know that you need to do what you need to do, but you make darn sure that you do what you can to take care of yourself!

March 28, 2006 - Msg 36257: Oh, what a beautiful morning! Cloudy, but sunlight filtering through a bit, and pleasantly warm out there. The best part is, there are five little "juvies" or juvenile squirrels frolicking around in my back yard. Guess their mama finally let them out of the nest box in one of my trees. I think I have another bunch in another box, but they haven't come out yet. Cute little things.

fungirl, it's just great to see you. Sorry you've been through such trials and tribulations. Just remember, "this too shall pass."

Just got off work, and am heading back to the hospital. You'll remember that my friend Henry passed away last May? Well, his wife - one of my dearest friends for 30 years - is having knee replacement surgery this morning, and you can bet I'll be at the hospital with her. She's scared, mostly of going home because Henry won't be there, but her friends will. We won't let her down. She just doesn't know that yet.

Friends, if any of you use PayPal and you get an email "confirming" a purchase made and charged to your account, but shipped to someone else - DO NOT reply to it or answer any of the questions. Forward it in its entirety to "Spoof@paypal.com". It's a scam, it asks for your credit card number "for security reasons" and also asks for your password. It looks very authentic, has the logo and everything, but it's a fraud. I've received three of them, and have forwarded them all to PayPal. Now I've received another email, supposedly from PayPal, explaining why they need all that information. It's a scam too, I'm sure, so I sent it to Spoof. Liars, thieves, scum of the earth, parasites, useless varmints - what is this world coming to, anyway? Makes me so mad.

Oh, well, forget that. Gotta go see my friend, and the Plum needs a cuddle. Have a great week, everyone. Sugarplum says 10-4! --Romeena

It's cloudy and rainy here in Atlanta. Tomorrow the weather's supposed to turn around. I guess its the lack of vitamin D, but I'm not fond of these types of days. My hubby loves them because he's from dreary Ohio.
Has anyone alerted Floyd of the interloper? Don't forget he said to use the message # last time.
Fungirl- How do you do? I'm a bit new to the porch. I am sorry to hear of your difficulties. Give them all to God, and he'll protect you. I'll be praying.
Me-They- See if you can get another medication. It may have a stimulant in it. This is a last resort kind of thing, but Benedryl always puts me out like a light when my hubby's out of town and I can't sleep.
Romeena- Thank you for the advice.
Rev- Good luck with your CD. What will be the name of it and when will it be distributed?

LUCY: Since my wife works several nights a week, I won't take any kind of sleep aid that knocks me out. The kids sometimes need me during the night and I'd be too worried that something might happen and I wouldn't wake up.

ROMEENA: I don't have to use PayPal anymore. Not since I scored it rich by sending some money to a Nigerian prince who is using it to get his millions out of that country. It was just my luck he had my e-mail address. My check should be coming in the mail any day...

March 28, 2006 - Msg 36270: Thanks, MDC. I always appreciate prayers! I actually slept much better last night, only woke up once at 4am and went right back to sleep till 6:30. I have developed a bad habit of waking in the middle of the night and feeling like I have to check on the kids before I can go back to sleep (real neurotic, I know). It has been happening since we moved out of our house so I must have some kind of insecurity about being away from the home I lived in for 16 years. I am also kind of like Me-They, I don't take sleeping pills because my husband is badly hearing impaired and when he takes out his hearing aids at night he is deaf. Since I am the only one in the house that can hear well at night I feel funny about it because I know from experience that both of my kids can sleep through a fire alarm!

Well, better go. Laundry to do, supper to cook and a parent-teacher's meeting to attend tonight!
