July 30, 2006 - Msg 43497: That chain is really something, TOM!

Ro, I bought some sweet corn from a little grocery store in New Mexico and we cooked it on the grill. Mmm! Boy, it was so good.

I wanted to share something with you guys. This morning Keith (whose wife Linda was so sick...the one with the lung transplant that you all prayed for) talked to the church in the service this morning and share the testimony of how the Lord has taken care of them during the trials with Linda's health (she has actually had 2 lung transplants within the last 6 years). It was so amazing. Her leaving that hospital was certainly a miracle and I know it after what I heard this morning. Keith talked about the morning that they felt sure would be Linda's last. He said he woke up and was at the end of his strength and ability to cope. He was asking God to take him. He said the phone rang and it was a friend he had not talked to in awhile and the friend said he called just to pray for Keith. It was very uplifting and 20 seconds after he hung up, another person called saying they called to pray for Keith. He said that just changed everything for him and later that morning, Linda came out of the coma and continued to get better very quickly. He told us this morning that before she got better, that she had expired and was put on a ventilator but her pupils were fixed and dilated. Keith knew that his wife didn't want to just exist on the ventilator so the decision was made to take her off. They removed all IV's (actually her arms swelled so badly from her kindey failure that they couldn't find veins), feeding tube, everything except an oxygen mask. After day 4 or 5, she was still hanging on and then she just woke up, started asking why she was at the hospital and just continued to improve. She has been home for awhile now. She just got to witness the birth of her second grandchild and saw her son graduate last May. They have been through so much but God has given them so many blessings through all this. Keith shared a verse from Isaiah 40 and spoke it through crying and tears. I wanted to share it with you:..."The Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary and His understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak." Keith ended by saying that when hard times come, you can choose to be pitiful or powerful, and they have chosed to be powerful (through God). He also encouraged us to pray for the caregivers who are so dedicated in their service to others. Wanted to share that with my friends. Thanks again for your prayers on Keith and Linda's behalf.

July 30, 2006 - Msg 43518: Cute kids, Millie!

We had church tonight and Keith shared a poem he had written to his wife when they thought it was over and she would be leaving this world. He was sitting at her bedside looking out the window at people in a park across the street and thinking about how the world goes on even though he was losing the love of his life. They have been married for 35 years and were high school sweethearts. I thought you might find the poem touching, I know I did:

When Do You and I Get Fair Weather?

The waves don't stop rolling and the trees don't stop growing,
Just because one person no longer breathes.
The world doesn't notice when just a single life comes in, or leaves.

The children continue to play and the old folks will always pray.
The rest of the world says "it's just another day".

Just another day you can choose to throw away.
You are only given so much time and time is how we pay.

Tomorrow has no guarantee; the only thing for sure is it isn't free.

Where did you spend your time today?
Did you spend it wisely or did you throw it away?

Did you say "I love You" more than once, for no reason at all?
Did you say "you're beautiful just the way you are?", Did you make time for one phone call?

The things of love are not of this world, they just can't understand.
How does compassion, love and care make sense to any man?

It can't make sense without the love of Christ, He is the one that is the light.

Oh how I fail when I spend my time on things other than love,
Oh how I fail when I operate in this world instead of with guidance from above.

The waves don't stop rolling and the trees don't stop growing,
But the angels in heaven rejoice because another soul takes their leave.
They leave the pain and suffering of this old world and really start to breathe.

God notices when a single sparrow falls, so He waits for us as he gently calls.
Now we know our bank is full and we have unlimited time to spend together.
We are again as one and eternity is ours, with nothing but fair weather.

Linda, I can't wait to see you again.

Did anyone catch the "Hee Haw" marathon on CMT this weekend? I watched a little of it, mainly because it made me feel kind of nostalgic for my childhood. Mayberry Deputy, I would love to try some of that corn. I love to experiment with different varities in my garden. The sweetest I have tried yet is called bodacious. Very tatsy, but it has a short life. Meaning it has to be picked within a few days of ripening or it gets starchy pretty fast.. So I only plant a few rows of that to compliment the other stuff I grow. By staggering my plantings I'll have fresh corn from now till mid September.:):)

July 31, 2006 - Msg 43558: Having grown up in Surry County and lived just a stone-throw from Mt. Airy, I had always been a huge skeptic of the show, in terms of how I THOUGHT it portrayed "us locals". In a word: dumb. I came to work in Mt. Airy 11 years ago, and gradually the ice of my opinion has melted. It finally was fully liquidated a few weeks ago when I had the wonderful opportunity to play a show with Rodney Dillard and his wife Beverly. You may remember Rodney as the guitar playing Darling of the Darlings on the show. Through getting to know the town, the people, and then hearing what Rodney had to say about the experience really made me realize that Andy and the show really were, and are, onto something special around these parts. I'm proud to be from Surry County, and feel blessed when folks jokingly ask if I am related to Andy from the show.

July 31, 2006 - Msg 43559: Jim Taylor, thanks for sharing that with us! I hope you will visit here on the porch more often!

Romeena, I saw the picture of you on your wedding day in your picture album. You are one beautiful lady!

For those that are interested, my son is still in a local jail. We are looking forward to him getting out in about one month. The end of August to be exact! I think we will throw him a little, "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" party and try to cheer him up a bit. It has been amazing when I talk to him, or read his letters, and see how much closer he has drawn to God through this time. I pray that once he is a free man he won't let old friends and old ways pull him in the wrong direction again.

Boo, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
Wanted to make sure you noticed your birthday greeting there!

To Jim Taylor Msg 43558, you have nothing to be ashamed of. Many of us folks here at The Front Porch envy people like you. We only can watch the show and dream. You were blessed to have experienced that lifestyle first hand. By the way, are you kin to Andy? I see you share the same last name.

To Mary Wiggins Msg 43559, I'm curious about your son. Is he in a private cell or does he share it? Has he had, or will there be, a trial?

MARY WIGGINS: Is there a cool spot anywhere today?!? Too bad Gomer couldn't fix that freezer--we could take turns climbing in. Glad to hear that your son is coming home. I remember you discussing his transformation a while back. Maybe this whole experience was a blessing in disguise.

BOO: Every once in awhile someone over at Miss Crump's will comment about the color episodes, and the fact that Andy seems grumpier in them. That will quickly bring out the "we hate the color episode" faction, which, in turn, causes a stir with many of the long-timers who are sick of hearing people complain about the color episodes. Usually, when the debate flares up it subsides cordially, but every once in awhile passions are inflamed. Typically it is a discussion of grumpy Andy or an "I hate Warren" comment that lights the match.

For the record, yes, I believe that Andy seemed to have a shorter fuse in the color episodes, but, I enjoy the color episodes very much. Even the Warren episodes. He was funny.

ASA: Mother and baby are doing fine. The Mrs. is lacking for sleep, which is to be expected, but we are pleased as punch that everything seems to be going well.

On another kid note, praise the Lord that Chad's blood work came back that his immune-deficiency problem seems to have cleared up and, though he's still technically anemic, he's just on the outside of good 'ole "normal."

We need to have one of our parties again. I miss the old times. Between Asa riding goats, and us throwing meatballs in the bushes plus our softball team we had going. Seems like ages ago.

July 31, 2006 - Msg 43566: Thanks to all you well-wishers! Great to have found the front porch. Wish you all could experience what I've experienced living here. Sure, there are problems here, like everywhere else, but for some reason, around here they seem to really be obscured by the pleasantness of the area and the people. Ya'll are invited to give me a shout anytime your near "Mayberry". I can show you where all the sights are in town. I'll take ya to the Snappy Lunch and get Charles to whip up a Pork Chop Sandwich!

No, unfortunatly no relation to Andy LOL!

Jim Taylor

July 31, 2006 - Msg 43567: Thanks to colt Msg 43564, here is the CNN link for that Mayberry Bed & Breakfast in Wisconsin.

I love this talk about Hee Haw. I watched it primarily because I liked country songs. But I also enjoyed their corny sense of humor.
----------------------------------------
Remember this ole Hee Haw song?

Where oh where, are you tonight?
Why did you leave me here all alone?
I searched the world over and I though I found true love?
You met another and PFFFFFT you were gone.

---------------------------------------
And here's a Hee Haw song that would even make Briscoe Darling cry:

Gloom, despair, and agony on me. aaaaaaah
Deep dark depression, excessive misery. aaaaaah
If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all. aaaaaah
Gloom, despaire, and agony on me.

-----------------------------------------
Gosh they don't write songs like that anymore. I wonder why?

from Poor Horatio

July 31, 2006 - Msg 43568: That'n makes me cry, HORATIO.

See y'all tomorrow. Saaa-lute!

Me-They

July 31, 2006 - Msg 43569: Hey, PH, I figured I was probably the only porchster who would know the words to those two songs. Seems I was wrong! I knew I liked you!

May I whine a bit about something that is trivial, actually, but is making me sad? I have a lovely little mountain laurel tree in my front yard. I brought it with me from San Antonio in a one-gallon can, thirty three years ago. It survived one killing freeze about twenty years ago, and still grew to be about twelve feet tall, and just shaped beautifully. Actually, the freeze took its crown out, and froze it off to within about two feet of the ground. It put out new shoots from there, and ended up with five distinct trunks. Blooms in the spring, big clusters of purple flowers that smell like grape candy. Just beautiful. Well, for some totally unexplained reason, it's dying. Four trunks have died, and the remaining one isn't looking good. All in less than two weeks. I just don't know what to make of it, but I sure do hate to lose that little tree. It was a tie to home. Oh, well. It could be worse, it's just a tree.

Now, I have to go take a nap. Got to work tonight, and have been up since a little after seven. It's a long time until tomorrow morning.

Welcome, Jim Taylor, we're glad to have you. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

July 31, 2006 - Msg 43577: Hey ya'll!! Wasn't it Grandpa Jones who did that Cinderella story but it was all backwards?? I just remember the part when she slopped her dripper or something like that. Gotta love Hee Haw. Hope ya'll are doing good tonyte!--Salty Dog

July 31, 2006 - Msg 43578: Hey guys! I know you have been thinking that I just fell off the face of the earth but the truth is that I've been wrapped up in finals and school begining. Sheesh... running an elementary classroom sure is a lot harder and definitely more detailed than high school ;) We get kids next monday. Pray hard!

Oh and here's some fun. Lightening got our computer and I had to buy a new one. Just got everythin g up andf running again tonight. It takes me a while to get things done but hey... I do my best.

I've got to work on a take home final now. Later!

Dixie

July 31, 2006 - Msg 43579: Ha! That sounds funny Dixie.."We get kids next Monday. Pray hard!"...Don't panic, Girl. Prayers for you.

WOW, thanks for the MANY birthday wishes. Ya'll make me feel so good! I had a pretty good day today and this evening my sister kept the kids and Bruce took me to do whatever I wanted...beleive it or not, I chose to put on a pair of shorts, go eat burgers at the local Hot Rod Cafe (the best burgers ever!) and then we went out to the land and pretended to sit on our imaginary front porch for 2 hours. In all this time I have never had the luxury of just enjoying being out there. I always have whining kids with me or have to get home to take care of kids. Tonight was the first time I could just sit and enjoy the outdoors. It was so quiet except for an occasional bird overhead, a car driving by or the wind blowing through the trees. I couldn't believe the cool breeze. Bruce and I had one of those rare times that we could just talk about things and then before we left, as the sun was just about gone and the moon was shining above, we said a prayer together. It was a good birthday!

Welcome to Jim Taylor..hope you will come back often.

Goober, as I live and breathe! Where have you been and how is Mrs. Goober and Little Gooberette?

Ro, I am really sorry about the Mountain Laurel. I am a real tree-hugger so I can sympathize. It's a sad thing for a tree to die.

M-T, I think the reason Andy seemed grumpier in the color eps is because of Helen! She had such an attitude. She was always ragging on Andy about something.

Salty, I sometimes thinks about those times when Asa was riding goats and throwing meatballs. Now he just wears a toolbelt and does his act at the Gigolo Club in Yancey. We should plan some activities like we used to. Wanna go over to the movie in Mount Pilot this weekend. I'll drive and pick ya'll up. I promise to stay off the squeezins. I think there is a Glenn Ford picture playing.

Hey Mary Wiggins, good to hear from you. Prayers for your son. May he continue in the Lord and be strong.

Better go, my kids want to spend some time with me.

Later, Friends..

Boo

July 31, 2006 - Msg 43580: Hey, I just thought of something....since its my birthday I can use this as an excuse to have a TAGS marathon tonight...I still haven't seen all of season 4. Great idea, huh?

July 31, 2006 - Msg 43581: Hey Porch!!!

I had to meet with a vendor today, and he wasn't very nice!!!

I know that I'm not the only one with problems, or a busy schedule, but please pray for me, and espically for our buisness.

Hope that ya'll are all doing good.

Well, I better go, back later!!!

Morning Porch

colt-You didn't have to pass that heat wave over to us, 81 degrees at 5:30 am, that's nuts.

Me-They, I'm sorry I missed the Hee Haw chat. When I think back on my childhood that show is always in the mix somewhere. I'm not even sure if I liked the show at the time but I know I like the memories of it now. Hee Haw salutes my Hometown Delevan New York population 614, saalllute!

M-T, I agree with you about the color episodes. I know Don Knotts is irreplaceable but I really thought Jack Burns was a funny man, Burns & Schreiber were hilarious. I don't know if anyone ever heard their "Watergate Comedy Hour" album but that was FUNNY!

Asa-Boy, I'm I glad you showed back up. I said I was gonna go out looking for you and well, it's kinda hot out there. I would have gone but like I said it's kinda hot out there. Anyone answer you trivia question? Does it have anything to do with a "Reluctant Astronaut?"

Dixie-Lighting and a computer, I've played that game. I lost.

Boo-A belated Happy birthday!

Jim Taylor-Howdy, Oh my goodness "dumb?" no no no. I've said it before but I grew in New York I thought our town was Mayberry. I'd say the word for "you locals" is fortunate.

God Bless,
auh2o

August 01, 2006 - Msg 43588: Morning Porch! Gonna be another HOT day here on my end of the porch, but supposed to cool off some by the weekend. Let's hope so. Thank you all for the kind words, I knew I could count on you guys. Can I bother you for prayers on one more thing? Don't want to go into it on the porch just yet, but the Good Lord will know what it is for. I am so ready to finish with this estate & get my life back. Seems that light at the end of the tunnel just stays the same size, no matter how long I keep walking towards it. Prayers for those that need them. And Asa thank you for answering my call of front & center, I was starting to worry about you. Dixie glad to see you! You sure have been missed. Wish I had your energy! Ro have you had your tree checked for bugs or disease? Lots of little critters out there that can kill trees while they are gorging themselves.
Best get to work. Dad Burn it! Now THAT is a 4-letter word if I ever did hear one.

August 01, 2006 - Msg 43589: How rude was I? Welcome to you Jim Taylor forgive me for forgetting my "ammeninnies".
*Mavis

August 01, 2006 - Msg 43590: Morning darlings, no, not starlings.
Mavis, we saw yer ammeninnies but couldn't hear em. Prayers for you dear that all will work out. You know it will. Be patient hon.

Auh2o, thanks for considering going looking for me. Just thinking about it was kind of ya.

And Auh2o and Poor Horatio, I'm not thinking of the Reluctant Astronaut. Good guess though. Try again. A Mayberry character who went on to work for NASA. He wasn't really a huge character, but was on more than one episode.

Glad you day was joyful Boo. Sounds like you had a good time.

Good to see you Goober. How's Chicargo?

Bwb, Them vendors are supposed to be answering to you, not the other way around.

Salty, no yacos? I'm torn. :)

Ro, I have something coming in the mail for you later in the week. Tried to e-mail you a response but it kept coming back to me as an invalid e-mail. What gives?

Where's breakfast Spot? Maude? Anyone?

Asa
