Hey Porch

Thanks for understanding my never ending battle with foot in mouth disease regarding my last post.

Romeena-I sure hope you put your mittens on today!

Rev-I have a lot of family living in the Boca Raton area; they're still lamenting the 2000 election. The Boca clan comes from the left side of the family tree (every family has at least one) but (in my best Peter Graves voice) yeah know, I still love 'em!

MDC-It is nice to know you can count on Me-They.

Lucy-Thanks, things are going fine. I think we all came to peace with my "FIL's ways." Thanks again.

Skippy-I agree with Romeena's post (awhile back) about your boy. God Bless him!

Tom-Great poem! True.

Boo-Hope all works out for Bruce and you. I've never seen ducks do that before either.

You folks down south and out west keep warm. It's 7 degrees and snowing here.

God bless the Taylor Porch!

January 17, 2007 - Msg 48664: Hello my porch family!!!

I have been trying for months to get this computer to work, and it just does what it wants to!!!lol

I've been missin' ya'll somethin' awful!!!lol

As you all know, my life isn't exactally perfect, so talking to ya'll always helps!!!

Well, how are ya'll doin'???

I'd go back and read the archives, but I'd be up til 5 in the mornin'!!! I'm gonna try to check back here while the computer's still up, but I don't know if it'll stay working very long!!!

Hey to Warren, Millie, Romeena, MDC, auh2o, Asa,Lucy, HM, Big Maude, M-T, Floyd, Sterling, Boo, Skippy, KY Girl, Spot, and anyone that I forgot!!!

Waaren: I hate that for you about your cat, but you are in my prayers are with you. And what's this about a new house!!!???

I see from the archives that ya'll have been having to use the "BIG FREEZE"!!!

I have a sad story for ya'll... One of my best friends, and a very close friend of my whole family, had been dating a man for about 2 years, and due to her 1st husband(who she has a daughter by) running out on her, she was hesitant, and very cautious. She loved the man that she had been dating, though, and he had just asked her to mary him, and then out of the blue, on Christmas eve, he died. He had a massive heart attack. She was crushed, and so was our whole family!!! The really sad part, though was her daughter. Her daughter is 13, and because her mother hasn't dated since she was born, she's never really had to "share" her mom with anybody before, and so when our friend's boyfriend came into the picture, her daughter said that she hated him, and that she wished that he was dead. The Friday before Christmas, was the last time that our friend and her daughter went to his place, and the girl said that she was begining to like him. Then 2 days later, he was dead. I think the part that really got to me was that our friend hadn't got the ring yet, and was expecting it as a Christmas gift, but before he had a chance to give it to her, her boyfriend died.

Well, now that I've said my sad story, and probably misspelled 50 of the words(lol)I'll go!!!

Hope to see ya'll again tonight!!!

Barnwannabe.

January 17, 2007 - Msg 48666: Good Evenin',
Hope all are well.
Millie- I am thinking about you today. You're in my prayers.
BWB- Well, there you are. Hope life turns up for ya. I'm sorry to hear about your friend. That's horrible.
Auh20- I'll take snow. It's that ice that worries me.
Spot- You'll probably have a big night tonight. Thank you for all you do, even though we use GAPower in Fulton. One of my closest friends is a customer of y'alls.
Tom- I enjoyed the poem. Take care!
Boo- Bruce needs an MRI pronto. If he has a pinched nerve it or ruptured disc (sounds like it) he could have permanent damage. I have had 2 back surgeries. The first time I was diving off a diving board at the age of 18 and my back snapped in mid air and partially ruptured a disc to where I could barely walk. At 25, Michaela was 4.5 and weighed 65lbs. She tried to go rock wall climbing, got scared, and fell into my arms rupturing the other side of my disc to where I was paralyzed. With both times I had lamenectomy and discectomy. If the spinal fluid leaks out then blood can come in causing a clot. Trust me on this. Get an MRI and get him to an orthopedic or neurosurgeon immediately! He's in my prayers. Oh, tell him to put a good sized pillow under his knees and add ice for 15-20 minutes at a time.
Tonight I watched "The Rumor" on TAGS. It was so funny.
Have a good evening. Talk to y'all tomorrow!
Blessings,
~Lucy

January 17, 2007 - Msg 48667: Oh, BWB, that's a heart-breaking story. I'm so sorry for your friend, and for her daughter. That girl may need a little help, there's a huge possibility of some serious guilt feelings here. Small children experience what's called "magical thinking", where they really believe they can think something into happening. Thirteen is a bit old for that, but a traumatic experience like this could push her back into that mode for a while. She needs a lot of reassurance and support and love right now. Poor kid, and poor mom.

My stuffed pepper was delish, and I only ate one half, the other half is intact, so if anybody's hungry, come on by. Otherwise, I'll have the other one for dinner tomorrow night. I've got some pretty sassy peanut butter cookies, too. I love the things, and saw someone eating one at work one night, and it just flung a cravin' on me, so I came home and made some. Of course, with my diabetes, I have to limit my cookie consumption, so a batch of cookies will last a looooong time around here! I'd love to share!

Well, back to my TV. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

January 17, 2007 - Msg 48668: Hey, Boo. Lucy is absolutely right. Listen to her. You know this as well as I do. She is right. --Romeena

January 17, 2007 - Msg 48669: BWB, I am new to this site so feel a little reluctant to jump right in. I manage a 911 center and about 3 years ago we built a new center and were preparing to move. We were building a resource list in our computer system and when we got to the red cross there were questions about a list of names with the red cross. I looked at the list and told the dispatcher we shouldn't enter every name under that resource. I used a specific name as an example. I will not use the same name here but I said, Don't enter Billy Bob because Billy Bob could drop dead today and we would have to update that resource list constantly. 2 hours later Billy Bob was playing tennis and dropped dead on the court. I felt really bad. Things like that can happen for reasons unknown. I hope this will add some sort of explanation that this can happen.

January 17, 2007 - Msg 48670: I forgot to sign my last comment/Monte

January 17, 2007 - Msg 48671: I'm glad you felt free to participate, Monte. This porch functions on that premise - all are welcome, except the occasional rude interloper, and Floyd makes short work of them. Your comments are right on - things like this happen. I don't think we necessarily should look for reasons - it's just the way things are. People make thoughtless comments. People die. There isn't necessarily a correlation, and we shouldn't try to make one. Most adults can recognize and accept that, but it can be harder for children. --Romeena

January 17, 2007 - Msg 48672: I just had a silly thought. If I could cause harm by thinking harmful thoughts, then there would be no little obnoxious ants walking on my kitchen counter at times, they'd all be little curled-up brown dots, preferably outdoors. --Romeena

I've gotton the diognosis. They say it wasn't a stroke, rather a very bad infection, that they are treating with anti biotics. His red blood cell's are very bad and messed up right now, and his weakness my have somthing to do with that, as red blood cell's carry oxygen. Anyway's there treating him at the moment, and he'll be there another night or two.

BWB, great to see ya! That's a sad story though. Christmas eve? Wow, that must of been a blow. Isn't that awful to, right when everyone is starting to get along in that situation. 2 day's after. Life is strange. Very strange. Prayer's for your friend and you, BWB.

Romeena, that's an interesting comment on thoughtless comments. I don't think I can add much to that, but I agree with your thoughts.

Sleep tight.

January 18, 2007 - Msg 48674: Morning Porchters.

Good to see you back BWB. Very sad story.

Hope your cat responds to the meds Warren and has a full recovery.

Boo, sorry to read about Bruce's back problems. Went through that very thing myself 10 years ago. A word of caution though, don't rush into surgery. I know at least a dozen folks who have had fusions done and are worse off after the surgery that before and usually end back on the table again. My own Dr. said most back surgeys are only about 25% helpful. Another 25% are worse after, and the remaining 50% are about the same as when they went in. Sometimes there is no option, but with rest, therapy, and a change of lifestyle (watching how you lift and what not) many will heal to a point you can live with the pain. I think Fungirl would be a good one to ask about that. Whatever he decides, I pray for you both. It really is the pits to have.

Welcome Monte. Glad you can join us.

Hope all has a good day.

As far as those ducks go, there was a flock (is that the right word for ducks?) of them and every now and then one would pop up to the surface and then go back under. I guess they are just South Texas ducks who aren't used to the cold! ha

Thanks for you kind advice concerning Bruce. The doctor we selected has an excellant reputation and is not one to rush to surgery unless it is needed. He also has the lowest infection rate in surgery and some different methods to help patients recover more quickly if surgery is needed. I have a good friend who worked on an orthopedic floor at the hospital and she thinks he hung the moon, as far as how he treats his patients. Thanks so much for the prayers. We see the doctor today at 4!

Wow, Lucy, you have really been through it! Bruce had an MRI last week and his GP said the radiologist didn't say he saw anything serious on it but that the back doc needed to see it. After what happened on Tuesday, I took him to the ER because I was afraid of nerve damage and thought someone there would be able to take a look at the MRI, but by the time we got into a room, it was too late to get the MRI from the imaging center...so...they got us a quick appointment with the back doc. Interesting that you should mention the ice. Yesterday our pastor called and said we should try the ice 20 minutes at a time and we did that and it seemed to help. He also started the Medrol-Pak yesterday and I noticed he was walking upright when he got up to go potty during the night...big accomplishment. Maybe I will get to go on that retreat afterall....boy do I have alot to do to get ready, though!

So good to see BWB again. So sad about your friend, poor thing.

Weird story, Monte..come back again.

Prayers for Millie today.

Gotta go get the kids ready for school! Later friends,

Boo

January 18, 2007 - Msg 48677: Good morning, everyone. Boo, about those ducks, my guess is that they were feeding. Ducks will dive to the bottom of ponds, and snuffle their beaks along on the bottom, filtering out little crustaceans and other organisms, maybe even catching tiny fish. Then they'll pop back up like a cork, get their breath and dive again. They're so buoyant because their outer feathers are tightly overlapped and form a waterproof shell around their body, even enclosing trapped air in the underlying down. They're like little airbags, and have to keep paddling like mad to stay on the bottom. When they stop paddling, they pop straight to the surface. (Yes, I watch Animal Planet a lot.) I also watched ducks when I was a kid in the country. I guess I misunderstood your first post about them. I had visions of all these little duck heads on the surface, no bodies visible. Couldn't figure out how buoyant ducks were accomplishing that!

DWF, I'm glad to hear that there's hope for your kitty. An infection is scary, but not as scary as a stroke. I hope he recovers quickly.

Well, guess I'd better go feed the Plum. She has been in here nudging my ankle twice now. Her next ploy will be to start messing with the poinsettia plant, because she knows that'll get me moving. She's such a little brat. She says hey! --Romeena

January 18, 2007 - Msg 48678: One more thing. Is anyone else as sick of those Nutri-System commercials as I am? That smarmy girl who giggles and says "Look at me, I'm in a size two!" just makes me crazy. Something about the way she says "two" makes me want to reach through the TV and slap her upside the head. She lost 33 pounds and got into a size two? Ha! I'd have to lose 33 pounds to get to the size she was before she started her diet! Besides, looking at her, trust me - she ain't wearin' a size two! She's an eight or ten if I ever saw it. I have a friend who does wear a two, and she's about half that girl's size. Where are the truth-in-advertising people in this case? Obnoxious, annoying girl. --Romeena

This after he took her to meet his parents and everything.
She's a wonderful, sweet , intellegant girl and any man would be lucky to have her.
Yes-I am biased--but then what mom is not.

Another cold day in New Mexico. More snow this weekend. Weather has been really strange everywhere. Makes you wonder what the future has in store for us. Mother nature is the Boss. I think sometimes we need to be reminded of that. All of our technology and advancements have spoiled us and mother nature can easily step in and show us how small we really are. BWB, all those exclamation points make me feel like my eyes are buggin' out when I read! haha...it wakes me up, anyway.

Thanks for the prayers, MDC. We got back from the back doctor a little while ago and we got a good report from Bruce's MRI! No herniated discs or problems with the nerves. He said it was just muscle injury and his muscles were spasming. They gave him a BIG steroid shot in his back and some different meds (relaxers and anti-inflammatory meds) and he is feeling much better already. What a relief! He is going to be continuing with Physical therapy and seeing a doc for pain management. Doc told him he couldn't get back on that tractor for at least 6-8 weeks. It will just take time for it to heal, but it should heal. Thank you all for your prayers. We really appreciate it and it looks like I will be going to my retreat this weekend, afterall!

I tried a new crock pot recipe today and it was really good! I put frozen, boneless and skinless chicken breasts in and put in 2 cans of Healthy Request Cream of Chicken soup, 1 can of Healthy Request Cream of Mushroom, an envelope of Lipton onion soup mix (probably should have used 2, though), and 2 cans of chicken broth. After it cooked for several hours, I shredded up the chicken pieces and then added cooked egg noodles (although you can put them in uncooked and leave them in for an hour to cook). Real comfort food and lowfat, too.

Boo

January 18, 2007 - Msg 48698: Hey Boo. So very glad for Bruce's good report.
Answer to prayer. The Lord is faithful! You'll have to give us a full report when you get back from the retreat. The recipe sounds good. How many chicken breasts did you use?

Miss Peggy

January 18, 2007 - Msg 48699: Me again, Boo. How many hours did you cook it?
On low or high heat?

Miss Peggy

January 18, 2007 - Msg 48700: Thanks Miss Peggy! I used a bag full of those frozen breast tenderloins (not sure of the weight, sorry...probably about 15 peices in it) and I cooked it on high for 2 hours and then on low for about another 4 hours. Also, if you put the egg noodles in uncooked, add some extra chicken broth or the noodles will absorb too much of the gravy and it might be too dry. One more thing, I think it would be great with some frozen peas tossed in the last hour but Bruce hates peas so I left them out. Carrots might be good, too.

Boo

January 18, 2007 - Msg 48701: Great news about Bruce Boo. I am really happy that's all it is. Tell him although them back exercises seem dumb, they really will help if he is faithful in doing them. Have fun at the retreat.

Boo-We make a similar dish but it's a lot less "healthier" than yours.

Monte-Welcome! Pull up a rocker.

January 19, 2007 - Msg 48716:
Hello porch family
This is the third time that I have tried to post this and lost it each time. O well here we go again.

Boo...so glad to hear about Bruce. Praise the LORD!
Also Boo... why don't you bring some of that crock pot soup tonight for dinner. Sounds good..mmmm

MDC... yep, I'm looking forward to the racing and baseball season. I believe it's going to be a different kind of year in NASCAR. Should be good.

M-T... thanks for the info about the vitamins but that is why we should always try to buy from a good source with a good record. We need to remember that all vitamins are not the same. But the sad fact is that most of these so called studies done are based on "all" vitamins thrown into one big barrel. Example: The other week I was in a Dollar Store and they were selling vitamin E. Well what most people don't realize is that there are different kinds of vitamin E. (natural and synthetic) You can bet that the Dollar Store vitamin E was the dl-alpha (synthetic) and not d-alpha (natural). The sad fact is that most of these studies are done using "Dollar Store" type supplements. That is just one example.
A good rule of thumb is to buy natural forms and if possible buy "standardized". Just look at the safety track record of the natural health industry at the National Poison Control Center. It might suprise us. But you know the reason I believe many of these so called studies are done is because the "BIG" drug companies don't want us to know about a natural supplement that has no side effects and cost only $20 a month comparred to there drug that has a page full of side effects and cost $200 a month.
Just my thoughts but I'm only a "REV".

Praying for you all.
-REV.

January 19, 2007 - Msg 48717: Good afternoon porch!

I hope Mavis checks in soon....

Boo, I was thinking about those ducks you saw. I don't know what species are native to Texas, but I do know that there are "diver ducks" like mergansers, and "dabbler ducks" like mallards. Perhaps you had some divers feeding on the fish. Obviously, they will dive underwater and feed, while dabblers do that little "bottom's up" maneuver and you'll see their little tail ends stuck up in the air while they are feeding on seaweed and other vegetation. They look so funny to me when they do that. (This is what comes of being married to a guy that paints wildlife. I don't even want to tell you about some of the things my husband has put in our freezer for the sake of "reference"!)

DISCO DUCK?? Oh my does that bring back memories...I won't say what kind;)

I hope everyone finds a nice warm place to spend this evening, and perhaps a good book, or better yet, a TAGS tape! Maybe we should break out some more of Romeena's hot chocolate and peanut butter cookies, too!

Mayberry greetings!

January 20, 2007 - Msg 48740: Brrrr! It's cold, rainy and grim here today. The temp is 39 degrees and mercifully, there's no wind. I'm so glad I got my shopping and other errands all done yesterday and don't have to go out in that cold soup today.

The Plum just had a good bath, and we cuddled for a while with her wrapped in a warm towel, and now she's beautiful. All blown dry and combed out so pretty, she's prancing around here like Miz Thang, so proud of herself.

My dinner guests will be impressed, I'm sure, except for one friend who doesn't care for dogs and will make faces if the Plum even comes near her. I'm still trying to figure out how she got to be my friend! (teehee) Naturally, Plum loves her and wants to sit in her lap! I wonder what causes that?

Well, gotta vacuum the living room, clean up the kitchen, and start putting the sandwich fixin's and dips out on the island. We're having a very informal dinner tonight, my favorite kind. My daughters used to say that my mom was china, they were pottery, and I was paper plates! Pretty much true, I guess.

Have a great evening, friends, and stay warm. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

January 20, 2007 - Msg 48742: Just checkin' in. Prayers for Warren's cat, Barnwannabee's friend and daughter, Bruce's back, Millie, and anyone else who is ailin' or sad. MDC, I did read your note about the natural remedies for acne, but I guess we're past that. We visited a second dermatologist and took the plunge for acutane. His acne is VERY serious. So if he can take it for 4-5 months with no serious side effects and it helps clear it up we'll be most thankful. The side effect we're most concerned about is depression. Please add him to your prayer lists. He's 16 now. If you'll recall a couple years ago I sent you all to a site of my class reunion pictures and he was playing golf with me. Anyway, thanks for prayers on his behalf.

January 20, 2007 - Msg 48743: Afternoon porch!

Millie, I sure hope you start feeling better real soon, and won't need chemo anymore. My mom was fighting cancer a few years back, and she and all the other patients would sit in a lounge and get their chemo through I. V.'s. (Is that how you get it?) I used to go with her and keep her company. I met a lot of nice people there, but there was one man who wasn't exactly nice...He was an older man, seemed to be from a European country some where. He would always be so cross when he was there for his treatment. Everyone else there was in the same boat as him, yet they managed to be mostly pleasant. This man, however, refused to eat any food unless his wife made it. She would bring him there, make sure he was all set up and comfortable, make sure the television was tuned to the channel HE wanted and then leave. She would go home, prepare a meal, come back and feed him, and he never even smiled or showed any appreciation whatsoever! As a matter of fact, he was angry with her on more than one occasion for taking so long! I tried to convince myself he must have better days, but I don't know!!! All in all, though, I give you TONS AND TONS of credit for going through what you are going through. I doubt anybody can really understand what it is like for you, but like Romeena said earlier, you do all you need to do to make your life tolerable through this difficult time, and hopefully we here on the porch can lend a little levity and humor to your days!

Charlotte, my daughter has had horrible, horrible trouble with her complexion through the years and has tried everything. She went on acutane last year and it took a while, but she looks sooo much better now. I, too, was worried about depression and other side effects, but she is doing fine now. If she had blue days I would try to remind her, there were other factors at play and not to take her emotions too seriously. A lot of love and support will be in order for him, and at first his complexion might actually get worse. It did for my daughter and that was VERY discouraging. But after a while we started to see improvement, slowly at first, but improvement nonetheless. The other difficulty she had is very dry skin and nose, she was subject to nose bleeds at times, so he will need powerful moisturizers and perhaps a little vaseline or something like it to help. My daughter's bridal shower is tomorrow and she looks like a glowing, beautiful bride-to-be, so encourage your son that better days are ahead. (Of course I doubt he will ever be a "beautiful bride-to-be, however!) My prayers will be including him.

Boo, I bet you did see the duck's heads! Diver ducks tend to swim lower in the water than other types of ducks so some of them do swim underwater with just their heads above at times!

Well, my first book is done now....the sequel will be next week sometime!

Have a great Mayberry Day to everyone, see you all at Longhorn restaurant! (I just put on my earrings! I hope I don't get them caught in the bowling ball!)

January 20, 2007 - Msg 48744: Hey Gang from Snowy Oklahoma.. Charlotte.. I noticed your comment about your son's acne. I have very sensitive skin, too. I use Aveeno oatmeal soap to wash with. Hey Porch

Millie-You are a light! I guess, maybe, that makes you the porch light? So ta speak. By the way, I'm sorry I missed the Oreo's and milk, one of my all time favs.

Lucy Moments-Is that snowy Oklahoma where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain?

Rev-I saw a church sign today that read, "Seven days without prayer makes you weak." I thought that was a clever one.

Mary Wiggins-Humorous? I don't think Asa is joking! haha

Mavis-Thinking of ya! Prayers.

Oh yeah, that 1 to 2 feet of snow we were supposed to have received the other day? Well, it was off by 1 to 2 feet.
