Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for all the prayers and concern as I made the emergency trip to KY this past week. Daughter #2 is doing "guardedly" better. Still extremely tired, and dizzy. Hey Ro; any ideas??? I think we've covered about all the areas.
I can't tell you how many times I thought how the Lord was guiding us, and I felt your prayers!!
Going to go to bed now. I'm tired. By the way M-T where do you live in MD??? ~New Neighbor

Yep Boo!, great weather...'kinda what south TX is all about sometimes.

Ro, one of my cure alls is put a pound of Epsom Salt in the tub and take a long hot bath. I have had some skin problems that I know it helped. Last night rather than a shower did the bath and got out like a limp rag doll. Wow did I sleep well. If it wasn't for the Epson Salt once in a while, doubt I could keep unloading the deer corn (350 lbs/week), etc. Pluss it helps with the bicycle riding I am doing.

Prayers for all and especially for the state of the nation.

October 29, 2007 - Msg 57533: In response to the question about what we do for Halloween, my family's always celebrated it, if you can call it that. It's more of a fun "Fall" thing. My kids usually dressed up and went out trick or treating, but never in scary outfits. My daughter was a princess for about 4 years in a row and one year she was a jail-bird. My son only went once or twice; he really never got into it. Anyhow, I usually decorate the house; it's one of my favorite times to decorate. Nothing scary, just pumpkins and scarecrows and such. I do have a couple of ceramic ghosts sitting on a bench, that I put on my table - but they aren't scary. They look kind of like the ghosts in the Casper cartoon. I usually leave my stuff up for several weeks; then I just go right into my Thanksgiving decoration stuff. (Turkey and pilgram figurines and I leave up the scarecrow stuff to go with them, and just put the ghosts back into the box). Most people in our neighborhood celebrate it like Romeenas family: trick or treat down your own block and maybe the next one over (only to people you know) and the kids get to have 2 or 3 treats that night, and the rest are put away to be handed out later. Fall is my favorite time of year.
Congrats, Spot! Good job! Save me some baby back ribs, I'll be right there.
I wish I had a pecan tree too. I wonder if they would grow in Idaho?
I hope your rash gets better soon, Romeena.

Lots of luck to you and yours,

October 29, 2007 - Msg 57534: Holloween here in nothing. Few kids and there is someting planned in the park. I did buy a bag of candy but doubt there will be a ring at the door.

Before we moved here, were across the street from a church. They had a hugh celebration on Halloween....their parking lot filled and people parked every where, down our alley and couldn't have gotten the car out if i wanted to. Lots of noise that would keep on past bedtime. The parking situation also happened at Easter, but what got me was they had no Christmas services. Christmas eve they were closed and Christmas day, no one there.

I was a mean little kid and Bill....a friend of mine always cooked up a treat for the Halloween evening. First we had a Ford model T spark coil. We would streach out what we called hair wire....probably a 30 guage wire. When hooked up it would put purple sparks into who ever walked into it. Wouldn't do injury, but did hurt. That was our kind of fun....no treats, but you got the tricks. Later we built a Van de Graaff generator....run into the wire and no shock, but your hair would stand straight up and really large blue sparks would be radiated around the poor kid that hit the wire.

Retired from Halloween tricks...been there and done that.....ray

October 29, 2007 - Msg 57535: We've never done Halloween with our kids. We've done various things throughout the years. We've gone to bonfires/potlucks at a friend's house, we've gone to Chuck E. Cheese (the place is empty on Halloween), when we lived in Michigan we often would spend the night at a hotel with an indoor pool and swim the evening away. We've gone to the movies. Hubby and I did Halloween as children, but we never felt comfortable with it as adults and opted to just ignore it.

I love fall though. Pumpkins, dried corn etc.

Life will be hectic around here for the next 2 weeks. Music Man opens on Nov. 9 and we have rehearsal almost every evening until then. Trying to get our regular stuff done, be a family and get to rehearsal. Not an easy task. . Then I have a break until Dec. My oldest loves the theater and wants to audition for a part in the YOuth wing's January play. We'll see.

Loving this chilly weather. Had vegetable soup for lunch and I"m making black beans for supper tomorrow evening.

ROMEENA - Praying you find out about that rash. When do you go to the dermatologist?

COngratulations Spot. Glad you made it home safely.

October 29, 2007 - Msg 57536: Real quick rock, y'all. Deani's saying she's going to call the cops again. The last time I talked to the police they told me that if she said he'd been here for 1.5 years, email saying she sent him here, and Nick telling the police he wants to stay she doesn't have a leg to stand on unless she comes here personally to get him. She's broke all of the time, however, ya never know. Nick told her today if she comes and gets him that he will run away and live in the desert until he's 14. Of course that would put him as a runaway in juvi, but hopefully the police and judge will understand if it gets to that point. She doesn't understand what she's doing to him. She's only thinking of herself and in 5 months she may lose Nick forever. This is a 13 year old kid who has enough emotional instability genetically not to have his Mom making things worse. Please keep this in your prayers. Love y'all to pieces!

October 30, 2007 - Msg 57542: Good morning, all. Just got home from work, not a hard night at all. Patients and families were all decent, pleasant people who behaved well. Even the 17-yr old new mom - no smarty talk or anything, she was quite nice. Still, 12 hours is 12 hours, and I'm tired.

I think "rash" is a misnomer for whatever this weird malady is. I'm just --- spotty! Red spots - what can I say? The older ones are fading, but new ones are forming. I see a dermatologist tomorrow.

You folks are so kind, to uphold my excitement about getting little Starr. Most people get a new dog and no one knows it but the family and maybe a neighbor or two. You permit me to make such a big deal out of it, you'd think I was adopting a baby. I suppose, in a way, I am. Thank you for understanding that and allowing me to be a bit eccentric.

Hi folks. Asa here. Been gone a while. Just busy with life and all it has to offer. Hope all is well. Have not had time to read the archives so a blanket prayer for all that need them.
Things here are not great. Mrs. Asa's liver is not well from the MS meds they had her on so until that recovers, if it does, she is not being treated for the MS. Not a good situation. But God is in charge and we place our faith in him. He has a plan here for us and we just need to be patient in waiting on him. That is hard to do sometimes (especially when you are a control freak like me) but I am learning.... I hope.:)

Thanks for the prayers uttered on our behalf. They are felt and appreciated. And thank you Romeena, New Neighbor and Boo for the e-mails. You are all very precious to me.

I am so excited for you Aunt Ro with the mysterious rash. I have had a rash on my neck for the last week. It was lumpy and itchy like mosquito bites but yet it spread like poison ivy. Never did break open or get blisters. Now there are just spots left. It was kind of weird. I have it on my arm too. That broke open so I keep it covered. I go to enough schools that I could pick up this nasty staph infection.

We should have a Starr countdown. . .wouldn't that be fun!!

Hi there ASA! Great to hear from you. My prayers for your better half, that is for sure.

Rev- where are you these days? still in Maine?
LUCy, prayers for your situation and Nick's.
My, what a mess that is. keep a level head about it and just do what you can. keep all legal options open.
M-T - ever consider the name IOU, IOU, I O -U-U-U. haha (Elenora would be so proud)
Boo- I always went as a hobo, from about 6 to 11 years old, and that was it! ha There was something about the weather in Phx always turning cool the day before, the scent of the falling leaves, and the sight of my mom sewing "patches" all over my clothes. My dad would burn the end of a cork on the gas stove, and then transfer the burnt stuff to my chin and cheeks for my "beard" and then he would let me wear one of his old hats. (remember that men still work those "kojak" type hats in the 50s-early 60s.) It was jsut a one-night fun time, and we were only allowed to go up our street for two blocks, and then back.
All this ugly demon stuff today has me totally into the scripture that says to have nothing to do with such, so for about the last ten years we have kept our light off and have knelt in prayer for the Lord to protect all the children.
SPOt- glad you are back safe and sound. Hope your water situation improves soon.
Opiemom- i love a good hardy soup this time of year, mmm good.

Asa, it's good to see you here on the porch. We miss you, my friend. Prayers for your good lady - I pray that her liver function returns to normal soon. This is a difficult road you're walking right now, and I wish we could do something to help. I'm just grateful that we have the gift of prayer to offer.

"Nutty"? "Crazy"? "Spotty"? Well, I guess they all apply, so I don't mind. The spotty part will go away, and as for the other two, I have no defense.

Well, guess I'll start getting ready for work. I'll get this shift behind me, and then it's fun time for a few days, then I get Starr, and things will get busy around here, I'll bet. A three-month-old puppy can create more havoc than a two-year-old kid, and that's a lot of havoc!

Blessings, all. -- Nutty, Crazy Aunt Romeena Pumphrey.

October 30, 2007 - Msg 57558: Opiemom, here's how my mom would make my hair curly as a girl (on special occasions), and it LASTED. My hair has always been very straight so my mom would wash my hair in the evening, and then let it air dry for a bit. While it was still damp, she would roll it up in strips of cloth (what the old-timers call "rag rollers). She would just tear up an old dishtowel or something in strips about and inch wide. She just took small sections of hair and rolled it around the cloth, then rolled it all the way to the head and tied the ends. In the morning, "PRESTO"....curls. It really worked. Hot rollers or curling irons don't hold the curl as long.

Happy Halloween all! I've made rice krispy treats and no-bake cookies. Help yourself!

Sorry I haven't been around for a week or so. My oldest broke her wrist last week so I've been busy trying to keep her happy and comfortable. Poor thing. She initially hurt her wrist in dance class when they were doing some tumbling exercises. She was doing a round-off and hurt it on the landing. Then she was playing with little sis and got up to do a jig or something like that, then promptly tripped over the dog hitting the wall. She tried to brace herself with her wrist and got a "buckle" fracture. According to our pediatrician, it's the most common childhood fracture and the least serious. She will be in a splint for 3 weeks 24 hours a day and then 1 week just at school. It's times like this that make me feel like I'll keel over from a massive stroke before I reach 40. I can handle a lot of stuff, but when it comes to my babies, I struggle.

AUH2O, "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" is a classic and one of my all-time favorites!

ASA: Great hearing from you, too. Prayers for you and your Mrs. Keep the faith.

NEW NEIGHBOR: I'm from north-central Maryland, about an hour from Baltimore and Washington.

Thanks for all your comments on Halloween. Tonight we'll let the kids do some trick or treating with some friends and their kids, then dole out the candy amid the whining for more over the next few weeks. Chad is a red Power Ranger, and Nora is going as a fairy (recycling her costume from a summer ballet recital). Poor Veda is out of luck since we don't let the kids have candy or sweets until age three.

A few years ago I did a lot of soul searching regarding Halloween. It was just a fun time to dress up and trick or treat when I was a kid--probably like it was for most of you. Nothing really ghoulish or fake-bloody like it is sometimes today. I have very pleasant memories of it.

I figured it was kind of like Paul talking about eating food sacrificed to idols. I'm not celebrating evil, and my kids certainly aren't. For us, it's good clean fun. As long as it remains that for us, it's okay. So, we ignore the gore, try to shield the kids from the worst of it, and have a good time. That said, I respect whatever one decides is right for them and their families.

And if I was Sean, I probably would have hung up the costumes, too!

Where has STERLING been? He's been awol quite some time.

You know, after I got offline the thought crossed my mind that somebody was probably gonna jump all over me for just mentioning that I ALMOST typed two "o's" in the word "bob." Then I told myself I wasn't gonna let it faze me. Not a bit.

Let's go put a voodoo curse on ol' Eddie Haskell- any Leave It To Beaver fans out there? Remember that episode? Anybody have an old ragdoll we can use? We'll fix him good!

Just read the archives, I never meant to leave the impression I wasn't coming back. I did need a bit of a break though. I don't mean to be antag*nistic, I really don't, that's M-T's job (just kidding buddy). Nine times out of ten I'm just goofing around. I love discussing religion and politics and I don't ever recall getting into a shouting match with anyone, in a non-cyber setting. I even kept my cool when a college professor said that the murder of Robert Stethem was not a murder. Stethem was the Navy Diver shot in the back of the head during the hijacking of TWA 847, in 1985. I simply picked up my books and walked out, nearly bit my tongue off but that's all I did. Two other kids did follow me out, that was fun. Anyway, I love coming here and I'll try and do better.

Asa-Great to see ya. Prayers still following you.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts.

M-T At the risk of causing another bru-hah-hah, I will just say that anyone in favor of giving a drivers license to illegals knows not what they speak of.

New neighbor, it's ok, everyone here knows I'm an "oldie but a goodie!" ha Yup, from the era of "big hair and white gloves in the PM" like you see on Aunt Bee. I remember one of my sisters used to press her gloves just so so. We used to have a pop bottle with a cork sprayer to dampen the clothes before ironing! ha

October 31, 2007 - Msg 57596: Yep, I'm still up. Haven't been to bed after working last night. I had to attend "Safety Day" at the hospital. I now know that in the event I notice a frayed electric cord I should contact Engineering. So good of the hospital to plan this day and require us all to come in, in order to acquire that vital information. I'd never have thought of it on my own. Seriously, I spent an hour up there, and that bit of information was the single most helpful thing they gave us. That, and enough acronyms to make a big pot of alphabet soup. Why must everything be reduced to acronyms these days? Oh well, it's over, and I'm free until a week from Sunday night. Yippeee!

Saw the dermatologist today. Her diagnosis: "I don't have a clue what that is." Pretty much what the other doctor said. Main thing, we know what it isn't. It isn't MRSA, but I already knew that. She thinks it's just some weird hives, possibly from something I ate, and will probably never know what. It's fading, no new ones are appearing, so in a few days I'll just be Romeena again, formerly known as Spotty Romeena. The most confusing thing is that they never itched, and hives usually do.

Well, I'm off. Gotta make a bank run and get a bit of cash. I've got $58 in my wallet - don't think that's going to see me through four days in Fredericksburg. Then again, it might. My plane ticket is paid for, and my youngest son informed me he has prepaid my motel bill. I told him he was worth the entire 55 minutes of labor I spent to get him into this world. We'll eat most meals with one daughter or the other, and when we do eat out, my boys will pick up my check - they always do. If I can exhibit a little restraint and not buy "stuff" in the neat little Main Street shops, I could conceivably come home with my $58 intact. (Never happen.)

This is the first time I've stayed in a motel down there. I usually stay with one kid or the other, but one house is torn up, with a new bedroom being added on. The other is full, as granddaughter is coming up from Port Aransas, and the house is tiny. So, I booked a motel room, and will have my own little retreat when I want it. Both girls set up a howl, but I didn't give in.

One week to Starr! --Romeena

October 31, 2007 - Msg 57597: Well, Merri, I'm sorry about your daughter's wrist. Kids can be so creative in finding ways to injure themselves. Poor little thing!

Really, Dr. P. - jack-o-lanterns originated in Ireland and were carved out of turnips? I think they either had very small jack-o-lanterns, or grew very large turnips. Very interesting!

Has anybody had a Honeycrisp apple yet? I bought four at Central Market on Saturday, and oh my, they are so good! They are well named. I've always loved apples, but that variety just has to be the best I ever ate. Wish my dad could have experienced them.

REV, I'm glad you're home for a while. You deserve some rest, and your sweet lady deserves your company. Rest, and let God restore your strength and your spirit.

OK, this time I'm really gone. --Romeena

October 31, 2007 - Msg 57601: Don't worry, possum, I don't think the word policeman is around anymore. If he is, he's just lurking, and that's just fine. Lurkers are welcome, so long as they don't suddenly run out from under the porch and bite somebody on the ankle. Our friend Don lurks from time to time, and he's a very fine feller, just not much of a talker.

I've got a load of laundry going, but if anybody needs something washed, you're too late. It just kicked over into the rinse cycle.

House is half-clean, suitcase half-packed, and I'm completely tired. House is going to stay like it is, suitcase will be finished soon, and I'm hitting the ironing board. I bailed out on going out to my son's tonight, just too tired. His wife will be following the kids around with her camera, and I'll be with them all weekend anyway, so I decided to be smart and stay home.

I'll try to stop and rock for a few minutes in the morning, but if I don't make it, you all have a great weekend. Starr comes on Tuesday!

Blessings, all. --Romeena

October 31, 2007 - Msg 57610: See ya there, REV.

Romeena, 58$ in Fredricksburg?...like you said, "never happen"...get thee to the bank! I could spend more than that in the Christmas store alone. Love that place..

Well, ended up going to church to find it had been cancelled and I never knew. Some folks met to take the little ones to a fall festival at another church and I ended up staying at the church in case anyone showed up that didn't get the message. I spent the evening playing the church's grand piano (that was nice) and visiting with my buddy, Keith. He is coming up on the one year anniversary of the passing of his beloved Linda so I think it was good for him to have a fried to talk to to. He is doing amazingly well but this week may be tough for him. Thanks to you all for your prayers in his behalf over the last couple of years.

The little fall festival the kids attended seems like it was a nice one. They came home with some candy, wearing plastic crosses and had a gospel tract with them. Erin wanted me to read it to her before bed.

Speaking of bed, mine's calling...goodnight All.

Boo!

October 31, 2007 - Msg 57611: Well, I think I would qualify as a "friend", not a "fried"...although, that may describe my mental state.

October 31, 2007 - Msg 57614: I have to say I am impressed with our local trick-or-treaters. We use the "honor" system by placing the treats in a large bowl on our porch with a sign that says "help yourself to a couple of treats" so that we may take our youngins out but yet still give out the goods. Every year we have done this, our bowl has still had candy left over. According to our neighbor tonight, we had quite a few revelers around. My mom was shocked that we did this because she said that when she was a kid if anyone dared to do that, the first trick-or-treater would pretty much empty the bowl and considered it good fortune! Maybe kids haven't gotten worse after all! ...Or maybe we just give out cruddy candy. Hmmmmm.

Have a wonderful night everyone! Prayers and blessings for the entire porch.

PEACE. Merri W.

I'll check out that site, Poor Horatio. I find that group interesting...just can't quite figure them out.

November 01, 2007 - Msg 57620: Poor Horatio, thanks for that link. What do I think? I think it's high time somebody yanked the leash on that group of hateful, vicious people. I'm glad they published that picture of old Phelps, because in it he looks like exactly what I think he is - a tool of the devil, sent to embarrass Christians and the cause of Christ. Free speech indeed. This is nothing but blatant hate-mongering and harassment, and it's high time somebody stepped on them, very, very hard, like you'd step on a roach. Now, one of these days, I'll tell you what I really think about that group! (heehee)

I'm off to Fredericksburg. Will drop by the porch down there, if I can get to a computer, and have time. Starr on Tuesday! Woohooo!
