October 22, 2009 - Msg 75728: Well, I'm the first one up this morning. Who's making breakfast?...guess it's me. How about breakfast tacos...potato, egg and cheese, or with bacon or sausage. Coffee with Coffemate Peppermint Mocha creamer (its the best), or OJ.

Supposed to be rainy and cooler today...YAY!..and Bruce flies home from North Dakota today..looks like he may be flying through some turbulent weather.

Well, I had better get Erin going and it won't be easy. I had to have a talk with her last night about the way she has been treating Sean (very nasty attitude at times) and she was very sorry and cried for awhile and wanted to spend time with Sean. I hope she remembers it today! She is really something. Much of the time she can be the little angel she looks like, but often she has an attitude that we are trying to work out of her, especially when it comes to Sean...I think she resents that he is homeschooled and she isn't. She is always wanting my attention. I may consider homeschooling her later, but not now. I am working on getting Sean ready to take a GED at some point. I bought a prep test book and will be using it for curriculum. I also got him a Driver's handbook...can you believe he will be getting his permit in 5 months?!

Better scram..

Hey Folks

Sun is a popping through this morning, beautiful autumn day in store I think. And, with B.O.'s numbers falling everyday, it could be morning in America again.

MDC- I gotta agree with ya, and Plato. The GOP deserves much of the responsibility for this mess. They were in charge for 8 years and look at the folks they choose to lead us, yeesh. That's why I'm joining 'em. I want a say in who I vote for.

Boo-Prayers for you, Bruce, and the kids. By the way, that taco sounds good but I'll take my java black please.

October 22, 2009 - Msg 75732: Good morning, porch! I've been reading emails this morning, mostly from my sister-in-law who is normally very busy, and has only recently awakened to the mayhem that's going on in this country. Emails upon emails, with little notes - (Is this true? Can you check this out? Such as that.) Many of them are old hoaxes (Target is owned by Muslims, etc.) but some are genuine and she just can't get over it. And some are really funny. I just have to share this one - no matter which side of the aisle you're on, you'll like this one. Here goes:

I recently asked my friends' little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said she wanted to be President some day. Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her, 'If you were President what would be the first thing you would do? '
She replied, 'I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people.'
Her parents beamed.
'Wow...what a worthy goal..' I told her, 'But you don't have to wait until you're President to do that. You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and sweep my patio, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house. '

She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, ' Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?
I said, 'Welcome to the Republican Party.'
Her parents still aren't speaking to me.

My pink brugmansia (Angel's trumpet) is in full bloom now. The yellow one is still blooming, but starting to fade. The pink is so pretty. The flowers are a bit bigger on it, and are a frosty, pale pink. Not fragrant, though, and the yellow one is. If the sun comes out for a moment, I'll try to get some pictures. Sure is pretty.

Tom, sounds like you're going to be busy, and have a good old time with all the family there. Enjoy!

Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

October 22, 2009 - Msg 75735: Yes she was, TOM.

i wanted to give you all an update on my friend's son, Randy. They did not remove life support and the dr's aren't giving much hope...say he has about a 5% chance of living, and with such severe brain injuries, who knows what things would be like if he lived. Everyone is praying for a miracle and I know it's possible. I did find out that he fell from the balconey of the apartment during a party and he had been drinking. Sometimes I really wonder about the wisdom of going off to college for the whole "college experience". If you think about it, think of all the immature kids that have lived at home all of their lives with supervision, being turned loose without accountability. It's a recipe for disaster these days. I am going to encourage my kids to go to the local university and save money, while having mom and dad around for accountability and help. That's the way I did it and it worked out well. I stayed out of trouble and never even had a drink during my college days. I was determined and wasn't messing around...I wouldn't even date until I finished college. I hear so many stories these days about kids going off and spending fortunes on classes that they never use, end up dropping out or can't decide on a major and all the while, piling up college loan debt. Crazy.

OK, I'm off my soapbox now.

Ha Ro, I love that story. And amazing when cutting thru all the political and PC bs, just how simple and true it is.

Auh2o, I was thinking you were a registered conservative, a thing that I think is pecular to New York State. I wish we had that choice here, but sadly my two choices are dumb and dumber. I get involved at the most grass root level as I can, but still get frustrated at usually who ends up as the final two candidates. You know what I mean?

Tom, sounds like a family reunion buddy. Take your nervous pills and enjoy. :)

Good to hear from you Rev. Have safe travels and be sure to keep your larnyx oiled up good with that bug spray.

We need to get a posse out looking for Mavis!

Boo, that is just so senseless & sad about Randy. Still praying.

MDC,me being from SC and Mayberry supposed to be in NC,and me knowing NC like I do,I can't figure out the logistics of it all either! I'm still trying to find Meehawken,SC,where the prisoners escaped from when Uncle Ollie was visiting Andy! Ha!
I know that Mt. Pilot is based on Pilot Mountain, and Mayberry on Mt. Airy,NC,which are up near the VA border. Raleigh is way yonder( as Andy would say) EAST of there. So.. go figure! They took a lot of creative liberties, best I can explain it all.
Maybe Mavis drove Big Maude to the dentist. We haven't heard about that root canal lately-ouch!

There was a big push to register people to save it, Ronald Reagan was just coming onto the national scene and I was hooked. Goodnight Mayberry!

October 22, 2009 - Msg 75757: Could someone send me a plate of that good supper? I stayed home from work, feeling just a tiny bit under the weather. Probably won't develop into anything, but I didn't want to take any chances and carry something to a patient, or worse - to a baby. Little low-grade fever, muscle aches, slightly scratchy throat. So, it's juices, echinacea, maybe some Advil and early to bed for me. Not without some supper though, so if somebody would just bring a plate by, I'll leave the door unlocked and stay back away from you.

Toye Starr doesn't mind at all that I didn't go to work. I don't know how she thinks the bills would get paid around here if I never went to work. I guess that's one of the blessings of being a little bubble-headed furkid.

Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

My dad has been in a-fib since 1980 and takes the same meds you take....must be a good combination.:-)

I have an update on Randy..still the same but I found out that my friend Mandy had a heart attack yesterday. She is in the hospital, too, and going to get a stint placed in one of her coronary arteries tomorrow. Poor thing. I guess her heart couldn't take the grief she was going through. Thank you for your prayers on her and Randy's behalf.

I have another friend that I have been thinking about all day, whose wife had surgery today...possible cancer. It seems like so many I know are having tough times in life. I am counting my blessings and praying for my friends.

Thanks REV, and you remember that there are folks sitting here on the porch keepin' your rocker dusted, that love you too!!:-)

Auh2o, good to see you here again! I can't stand to watch Bill O'Reilly. He seems like such an arrogant fake. Isn't he the one who was making unwanted advances against some of the women who work on the show?

Which reminds me...what did you all think about David Letterman coming out as the victim on television? Sure, he was a victim of blackmail..because of his own sensless affairs, but you didn't hear him saying that. He seemed downright smug about it.

"Dumb and Dumber" ASA??! HAHAHAHA...I love it.

I talk to Mavis daily on facebook. Even though she is retired, she stays pretty busy. She and Mr. Neff had to have their beloved weinie dog put to sleep this week (he was 14, if I recall) so she is having a tough time right now.

I also hear from Me-They now and then and he and his family are doing fine. He's still my buddy and we keep in touch.

I was at Lowe's (home improvement store) last night at around 8 looking over paint samples for the house. Man, not easy. I decided on a buttery color for the living areas, which all the trim work will be white. I am using a pale yellow in Erin's room and she wants me to paint a few red cherries on her wall (we saw this in a magazine and its adorable..we'll see if I can pull it off). Sean's walls will be beige, according to his request. My bedroom walls will be sort of a beige-gold color, I think and I am going to use some deep red in the bathroom somewhere. Hope I am going in the right direction. I want to the bedroom to have a warm, cozy feel to it.

I'm feeling better this morning, guess I'll go on to the reunion tomorrow, unless the punies return. It's about a 4 hour drive, but my car is comfortable and I'll have Toye Starr for company, so it won't be too bad. I'll just load up the CD player and take off. Hey, I might even tuck in a Christmas CD or two. Who cares if it isn't even Halloween yet? I like what I like.

Boo, the colors sound great. My walls are all a sort of vanilla color, with accent colors in some rooms. In my bedroom, the wall behind the head of the bed is a sort of buckskin color, very warm and soft. The colors in that room are beiges and golds and russets and some brown, and the wall really sets it off. I have some chocolate brown sheets, and some russet red ones as well. I like color.

Gotta run. I have to take TS to her vet to get her nails clipped. They're long, and I'm too chicken to clip them myself. I hurt Sugarplum once, her little nail bled, and it was just awful. I won't do that again. It doesn't cost much for Dr. Mike to do it, and it's worth it. In fact, when I have her in for something else, he just clips them and doesn't charge me.

Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

So sorry to hear about Mavis having to put her furkid down. That is the loving responsible thing to do sometimes, but oh so very difficult. Please pass on my sympathies to her Boo. I'm not sure if I have her current e-mail address in my home account or not. And so very sorry to hear that about Mandy. My goodness, what a tough time she's having. Prayers going up for her.
Boo, why is Me They not posting here? I feel I have offended him and feel bad about it. I have offered several apologies. I hope he has accepted them and we can move on. Maybe it's something else entirely. Anyway, please let him know he is missed.

Possum, you sure got a full plate of trouble there. Sure hope Laci doesn't pick up that nasty thing.

Although O'Reilly is hard to listen to, I do appreciate many of the things he and some of the other FOX opinion folks bring to light. In my thinking Glenn Beck really was the one who exposed and brought so much light to all these radical czars B.O. has appointed. And I don't think thats a bad thing. Hannity I can only take it small amounts, but again I am grateful for the work he is doing in keeping the public informed about stuff the sadministration would just as soon keep quiet. And I think it terrible how Rush has been dealt with this N.F.L. deal. Many things attributed to him that he has never said. But folks love him or hate him, and he is seldom without naysayers. (sometimes the truth can be a harsh thing)

Wonder if Maude got her root canal done yet?

October 23, 2009 - Msg 75769: Good Afternoon Porch Friends!
I hope all are well. Except for Boo's friend I don't see any major catastrophies. I've talked with Mavis about her loss of Tink. The best way to stay in touch with me is on Facebook. I have it on my phone. I can read the porch, but cannot comment, and since I spend little time on the actual desktop so that's why I don't comment very often.
We're hanging in there. Some stressors here and there. Bry's doing well in school. Nick is as well and has a girlfriend-scary! Michaela is at our house every day and is adjusting to the Georgia weather (as she lived in Arizona for most of her life). Bryan's considering a career change, and I support him 100%. Frankly, I'm sick and tired of all this healthy eating! Where's the Cracker Barrel food?! Plus, I really want him to be happy. He loves what he does, but not where he does it.
MDC- I am planning on painting our bedroom robins egg blue. Maybe I should re-think that with your comment :0)!
The Mr. cannot watch Beck or O'Reilly because he gets to riled up. Not because he disagrees, but because he agrees so much he gets upset!
Well, I need to finish cleaning, yuck. I hope all are well.

Lucy, paint that bedroom Jungle Red!...I'll paint mine light blue...hehe. I'm too tired for s*x.;-)

Got alot of the cabinets in the house today and some of the workmanship is a little bit shoddy...now here is where the builder and I part in our opinion. He hired the cabinet maker with the best price, who turned out to be a couple of guys near the border who don't speak English. It is very difficult to communicate with them and there are some things that need fixing...cabinet doors that don't quite meet in the middle, gaps, etc. They look beautiful at first glance but as you study them, you see little flaws. Of course, once they are painted they will look even better. The kitchen cabinets go all the way to the top of the 9 ft ceilings and just look so pretty. I HAVE to get another camera and take some pics for you all.

Well, off to a the local festival/carnival the kids wanted to go to.

Spot, what antivirus do you have?
I just installed norton 2009.
So the Prez says there's a "National Emergency" with the flu. Next thing we'll have Marshall Law, then look out! For example this now means that according to the law that Mass. passed, every man, woman and child MUST be inarculated or they will get fined and maybe jail! Things are crazy folks!
Also, another strong earthquake in indonesia!
Hve a good sabbath, and Lord help us.

Hey Folks

Boo-Thanks for the kind words. From what I know of the people at Fox I agree with them but I can't stand all the forced indignation, on either side. I think we should leave all that nonsense to the Left, fascism, socialism, communism, it suits their shtick.

As for FACEBOOK replacing the PORCH, all I have to say is, paraphrasing of course, "The Porch now, the Porch tomorrow, the Porch forever."

October 26, 2009 - Msg 75788: Amen, Auh2o...nothing could replace the Porch. Facebook has its place but it isn't the porch.

Hope Ro had a good time at her family reunion. We had some thunderstorms here in my area but hope they didn't where she is.

I have to tell you all that I have been so busy I don't know if I am coming or going most of the time and am ALWAYS behind. The laundry is piling up, and I could go on and on with the chores list. I can't figure out how women who have jobs outside the home manage things, although I have been tempted to go back to work so I could hire a housekeeper!;-) I was going to try to get more organized and keep my calendar updated, get a routine going, but I haven't had time to sit down long enough to get that together....ridicuous. I was looking over the new cabinets yesterday to give a list to the builder of things that needed to be fixed...crazy! The cabinets in the bathrooms, the laundry room and the built in stuff in the living room are fine but something went wrong in that kitchen. The workmanship is different in there. I don't know if the cabinet maker did the kitchen last and was running behind schedule or what but its a mess. Bruce told the builder not to pay them until the job is done to his satisfaction, because any of you who have had cabinets built know how expensive it can be. They even messed up when they installed the kitchen island. You can look at it and tell that it is not straight. Bruce measured it and it is an inch off, so it looks like it is sitting at an angle. Very frustrating. There are cabinet doors that have gaps, drawers that won't close completely. If you just look at them without closer inspection they look really nice, but when when you take a close look you find alot of problems with them. I really hope they will fix everything and we won't have to hire someone else to come in and do it. In one of the cabinets, they installed it with a hole punched through the back wall of the cabinet...now who in the world does that?!! I'm not very happy with the builder hiring these guys just because they were cheaper. Sometimes you get what you pay for. Well, Bruce is not the kind to compromise on this kind of thing..we will see how it goes. Oh, good news: I turned on my camera (the one i dropped in water) and although, I can't take pictures with it, all the pictures that I did take are safe so the memory card thing must be ok. I didn't lose all the pics i had taken up to that point.

Well, better get going...I'll be back during a break.

October 26, 2009 - Msg 75789: Good Morning Porch, hope all are ready to face the week. Busy work week ahead for ole Maude, hopefully. Chilly this am but supposed to warm to about 70 and then start raining tomorrow. The leaves are looking pretty with all the reds, yellows and golds but are falling off the trees quickly. Leaf raking in my future!

Good luck with the cabinets BOO. seems like quality work(ers) are sometimes hard to find.

Maybe some of the lost porch folks will come back around soon. Sure do miss them.

Lunch menu will be: roast beef sandwhiches, SLAW, chips. apple crisp for dessert.

better get ready for my work day to begin. Prayers and blessings to all today.

Hey Spot-We had that, I think it's called "google redirect" virus. We paid some money for it but I bought "Kaspersky Internet Security." It got rid of it and we are overall very pleased with Kaspersky. I believe Amazon.com has it on sale now if you want to read about.

Go Porch! Of the Porch, By the Porch, and For the Porch! lol (with apologies to auh20 :)
Just a quick hello this AM.
Boo- yes, stand your ground on the cabinets!
I'd even go so far as todemand a full re-make instead of a fix here, a fix there etc. Up til now, all else sounded well-made, so I think this should fall back on the cabinetmaker, after all THAT is suppose to be his SKILL. Could you imagine the head of Floyd on Andy Griffith's statue!? They would demand a re-make by the artist, as I think you should do with the kitchen cabinets. (Use that example with your GC. Let him see it from another perspective)
OK, soapbox away.
Prayers for all!

October 27, 2009 - Msg 75804: Hey yall- the FFA convention was great except for the Texas boy who got caught by the escalator. Continued prayers for a full recovery.

We were next to the Army guys and they were a blast. They had a Vet tent set up and it was perfect for Casey, since he wants to be a vet. Got lots of Army stuff -

Casey did not make the basketball team this year. He was a little bummed but not devastated. Casey has a good attitude - his brother would have been totally different in responding.

Well - Spot, a half of century in December. Sounds like another party to plan. Let's go back to Ro's - her place is a hoot!! Specially all that shag carpet she has! The orange cover really covers up everything!

Take care - will check point chickie tomorrow!

hm

October 27, 2009 - Msg 75805: Good morning, all. You can just forget about having your big rowdy party here at my house, because I'm HOME! Haha, fooled you! I got home about 9:30 Sunday night, worked last night, and am just now sort of rejoining the land of real people.

The reunion was great. I got to see my dad's first cousin, who is 90, and sharp as a tack. Physically, he's feeble, but his mind is 100%. He knew me the minute I walked in, and it's probably been 20 years or more since we last saw each other. He's a delight. Great sense of humor, loves to laugh and make others laugh, just a joy to be around. We had a long conversation, which I enjoyed very much. He remarked that this would probably be the last reunion he'd get to attend on this earth, but as he said, "That's okay. I'll just go on ahead and save the rest of you a place at the real reunion that's coming." Isn't that beautiful?

Starr made a hit with everyone, behaved beautifully, enjoyed sitting in several different laps but was content to remain in her crate while we ate. She's such a good little girl. The carsick thing that was a problem when she was a puppy has disappeared. She just got in her little carseat, curled up and slept the whole way. When I'd slow down in a town, or stop at a light, she'd pop her little head up and look around, see nothing familiar, and go back to sleep. What a sweetie she is.

Grandkids are wonderful, little Trip (not quite two) spent his time chasing Starr around, saying "puppy, puppy" in his gruff little voice, and Starr got plenty of exercise staying out of his reach. Of course he managed to catch her a few times, but someone always rescued her immediately. He thinks she's a really clever and interesting toy. His parents will teach him.

Boo, absolutely stand your ground on those cabinets. As you said, custom cabinetry is not cheap, you are paying for quality, and you had darned well better get it! Unless you hired the cabinet builder yourself, you don't even need to talk to him. You talk to the GC, and he had better make it right. Ask him if he'd accept delivery on a brand new car that was out of alignment, had doors that won't close right, glove box won't shut, etc. Either he delivers quality, or he doesn't. If he doesn't deliver what was agreed upon, then the payment that was agreed upon would be adjusted too - by a considerable amount. I'll bet he'll take care of it, though. Contractors depend heavily on personal recommendations.

Well, gotta run. Eloise and I are going to make a Target run, and get some lunch somewhere. I need to pick up some small toys, little socks, kids' underwear and the like - our SS class is filling Christmas boxes for Samaritan's Purse again this year. I'll probably thin my Beanie Baby herd a little and put a few of them in as well, especially the ones where I have duplicates.

Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

October 27, 2009 - Msg 75809: MDC, I am afraid of the oregano oil after the last time I took it. It felt like my esophagus was on fire. I guess I didn't dilute it enough but I have some reflux and a hernia in my esophagus that causes me discomfort anyway. That is probably why the oregano hurt the way it did, but it did cause a problem for me for about a week.

We talked to the builder and he is going to make sure the cabinets are fixed. As I have mentioned before, he has always done a good job for us and its not been easy doing things to Bruce's satisfaction. He bought a lot of window and door trim that he asked my opinion about. I thought it would be fine. Bruce hated it. So Mike is having to send back what was ordered and actually make the molding for around the windows himself, to Bruce's specifications. The day Bruce told him what he wanted, I thought the guy was going to cry...should have seen his face, but he didn't say anything...he just went to work with a good attitude, even though I know he was discouraged. He is very enthusiastic about what he is doing and I think sometimes he gets a little discouraged when we aren't pleased with what he is doing. I baked him some cookies today and took them to him because he really is going the extra mile. Today he told me that he made a big pot of spaghetti sauce for supper (cooking is his hobby) and asked if I would like him to bring me some tomorrow. Hot dog! A builder who cooks for me...can't beat that....wonder if he uses that secret ingredient: Oregano?!

October 27, 2009 - Msg 75810: Hey Possum, I haven't heard anything more about Jubi but that is probably good news. I have not been to church in over a week so i am out of touch.

Wow, glad to hear your mom is doing so well. Want to hear something strange? You know how we were trying to get that pacemaker for mom and never did? Well now she doesn't need it. Her pulse is fine, her PB has stabalized on the Catapress patch the doc put her on (and he took her off her oral BP med). She has more energy and is feeling better than she has in a very long time. She is walking with a cane instead of the walker, and even asking us to take her to walmart to get her hair cut. This is a really amazing development. Thanks for the prayers for her.

October 27, 2009 - Msg 75811: Oh, one more interesting fact about Mike the builder...I had the opportunity to spend an afternoon with his wife, as she was helping me choose tile, and it turns out that they have a son Sean's age that has almost all the same neurological problems that Sean has...Tourette Syndrome, anxiety disorder and learning disabilities. We have alot in common and I have been dealing with Sean's problems much longer and hope i can be a help to her with her son's difficulties.

Better make sure Erin is going to bed..
