January 05, 2010 - Msg 77032: Oh man, that pug story is very sad, REV. It is especially difficult to hear because I had to go talk to my sis-in-law today. She is out of a job and disabled from a back injury right now. She was forced to move in with her mom in a senior apartment complex. Well, she has a weinie dog that she is extremely close to but she never house trained him so he has been causing big problems in her mom's apartment. Today the manager found out the dog was there because a neighbor complained about him pooping and nobody picking it up...turns out the old guy stepped in it! Well, now the manager is saying she has to get rid of the dog (which was not supposed to be there in the first place). She was crying and has no other options. Even if she moved to a shelter, they wouldn't allow her to take the dog. I feel terrible for her and the dog because they are very attached to each other. It will be hard to find a home for him because he isn't trained and pees on EVERYTHING. No way would Bruce allow him in the house. Please pray for Vicki and for her pup, that the Lord would provide him a good home and help her not to grieve so. She is the sister whose husband left her for another woman 4 years ago and she just never recovered from it. She was very dependant on him and to tell you the truth, she is just one fry short of a Happy Meal, as the saying goes. After he left, she had to try to find work and was forced to give away her precious basset hounds to a good home. It was so hard for her, and then her kids did a very unwise thing and bought her a weinie dog for mother's day 2 years ago. I just can't figure out why. She was not in a position to care for it and could barely take care of herself, but now she loves him and is going to be forced to find him another home. Now I am afraid the dog will grieve like the pug did. I hate to say this but I honestly think that the most humane thing to do in this situation is to put the dog to sleep. He is very un-social and has only been around her. He will be miserable without her.

Boy, I feel your pain, Possum!! What an awkward situation in the dr's office. After i got out of there I would have had a talk with mama about good manners. Gracious...sounds just like something my mother would do. I certainly hope I don't do that to my children when I am old!

Better go take a break..long day and so much to do to get moved. We passed inspection today and got the certificate for occupancy but still need to close and finish up some things. I have been packing up boxes and have no place to put them, and you all know how much I hate clutter!

See ya'll in the morning. Stay warm!

Very tranquil is this Taylor's Front Porch, but also sad is some of the posts I have been reading here. Even some of the happy posts I've seen have made me a bit blue. Not sure really why... out of all the areas in the Mayberry.com network that I've seen, only The Taylor's Front Porch has affected me that way.

January 06, 2010 - Msg 77037: Thank you for your prayers, Albert and REV.

What you've said about the porch is very interesting, Albert. I think because this is a very "real" place, it is easy to sense the struggles and pains of others who come here. We are like a family in many ways. We encourage, pray for and love each other. Your comments have me thinking, though. Seems we have lost some folks recently and I wonder if some of that might be because we need to lighten up a bit.

Time to get moving. Hope everyone is staying warm. :-)

January 06, 2010 - Msg 77038: Good morning porch. Looks like we have a new addition. Welcome Albert from L.A. I have a bunch of family in Southern Cal. we visit often. Where abouts are you? Anyway, glad you joined us.

Rev, what a sad story about them pugs. Jim Herriot has some amazing dog stories he shares in his books that he has seen during his life as a vet.

Boo, that is so sad about your sisters situation. Those Doxies tend to be a one man (or woman) dog for sure. They will latch on to someone and be very loyal to them. So although there may be a period of seperation anxiety for both, if she can find a good home for the Doxie, it will do fine. I hope she does find it a good home.

It sounds like your moving day is just about here Boo. Gosh, I bet you are excited after all this time. I'm really happy for you.

Thanks for all the well wishes concerning my Aunt. Her service will be on Saturday. She was a sweet lady. I'll miss her English accent. She was the last of my family from England.

Possum, sorry but you story about your Mom had me rolling. I'm sure you were mortified. What is the old saying, live long enough to be a problem for your children?, or something to that affect. Hee hee hee. I think she has it down pat.

I wasn't really pulling for TCU in the Fiesta Bowl MDC, but I sure thought they would kick rear. They have all season in the Mountain West Conf. Boise State is darn good. I wish they could play the winner of the Texas - Alabama game to see who really is the TRUE national champion. But that won't happen. Oh well.

Well better get going. Lots to do today.
See y'all later.

With warmth and beauty in its path,
And hopes for brighter days.

With branches reaching out...
And birds begin to sing in tune
As children run about.

January 06, 2010 - Msg 77043: Good morning, porch. Welcome, albert. I hope you plan to stay, and aren't just making a drive-by visit. We love to get new folks on the porch, especially when they join in the spirit of things. You raised an interesting point, and I think Boo's analysis of the situation is on the mark. Most of us have been together here for ten years or so, and our conversations get pretty in-depth, just like any family. Also, for some of us, this time of year is a little difficult, but we pull each other through it. One thing for sure, you can count on TOM to post a poem that just says it all, every time. Who could feel sad after reading the one above? Thanks, TOM.

REV, that's just heartbreaking about the two little pugs. My neighbor has two pugs and he walks them on the street twice a day. Baxter and Gracie, out there walking with Big John. It's quite a sight. Also, it warms my heart to hear you talking so lovingly about dogs in general, and I know how you have come to love little Jake. I recall when you weren't really all that excited about a house dog, but boy, things have really changed! Love does that to you sometimes.

I know about the grieving part. Poor little Sugarplum grieved for Dale when he passed, and would search the house trying to find him. It about broke my heart. My own grief was so deep, but I found ways to express it. Her little mute grieving was just so sad.

A happy note - to cheer you up and lighten thoughts about the passing of a pet - may I suggest that you read "Cold Noses at the Pearly Gates." I think I've mentioned it before, but folks, really and truly, there's gold in that thar book!

Well, it was a long shift, and I've got another one coming up tonight, so guess I'd better eat a bite and get to bed. Asa, my friend, prayers for you at this time of your auntie's passing. You'll see her again! Be blessed! --Romeena

January 06, 2010 - Msg 77044: Happy New Year everyone! Just thought I'd drop a line and say howdy. All is well on may side of the porch. Hope it is where you are, too.

Welcome ALBERT. Sorry about your family situation, BOO. Prayers for all of you today. By the way, BOO, did you get my mail? No, it wasn't shorts.

Speaking of the weather (what did Calvin Coolidge say again?), maybe if we all sing good ole 14-A it'll warm up? Get your uvulas ready..

Anybody have an incant to ward off a headache? I have had a ding dang doozy of a day- went to pick Andy up from a friend's house,he wasn't where he said he'd be-was at another friend's house & I had no clue how to get there. Through a flurry of cell phone calls (he was supposed to have let me know if he would be someplace else!) I got directions and ended up at some subdivision out in the boondocks. I got him ,though-and made him drive back home to Mama's!
I don't think old 14 A is gonna do it for me. Maybe we should sing "Heat Wave"! It is COLD here! They are even calling for SNOW tomorrow night.
Glad you joined us on the Porch,Albert. I lived in S. California many moons ago. I'm on the South Carolina end of the Porch.

Hey Boo,I was in Lowes today-thought about sitting on toilets, but the salesperson who was helping me was such a handsome younger guy that I couldn't tear myself away from looking at him in order to toilet sit! LOL Nah,I'm no cougar, but he sure was easy on the eyes!

January 06, 2010 - Msg 77052: Wow, MDC, Vicks on the feet for a headache?? I knew about the cough thing, and it works, but a headache? I'll have to try that, or I would if I ever got a headache. Strange - I used to get them all the time - terrible headaches, one after another. Migraines, I guess, because light and sound bothered me, sometimes I'd be nauseous (and no, I don't drink) and they'd last for hours. In a day or two I'd have another one. Then they suddenly just stopped, several years ago, and I can't even remember the last time I had a headache. God is good. About the Vicks, guess I'll have to suggest it next time a friend has a problem.

Well, I slept most of the day, didn't get the hoped-for call at five, so I'm up and getting ready to go back to work. It's just as well, I could use a full paycheck this time.

Poor little Toye Starr - she's going to be so upset when she realizes I'm leaving. REV, can she come and share your lap with Jake? She doesn't take up much room. In fact, she'll climb up and perch on your shoulder so Jake can have the whole lap. Poor little girl, she'll be so droopy, but when I walk in tomorrow morning, she'll just rejoice, twirl in circles, carry toys hither and yon - it's so funny! What an ego-builder!

January 06, 2010 - Msg 77060: Good Wednesday evening porchers!(and thanx for the welcome too!)
Asa: I'm out in the San Gabriel Valley area of So Calif.
Boo and Romeena: Yep. You folks here do talk very in-depth and personal (and that is one reason why this Front Porch is so unique and charming). I don't know if weighty and deep subjects are a reason why people don't return (I believe Boo mentioned something to this effect). Best I can come up with is that maybe people see how tight you all are with each other and perhaps they don't see how they can fit in. I've been by other public boards in the past where this kind of situation was brought up. Lurkers and folks on the periphery sometimes found it difficult to "jump on in" in the middle of an on-going conversation or series of related posts. I dunno if that is the case here. Maybe being a public rather than private board has something to do with it.
Within the Mayberry network I've been around (not like Arnold who has been to Raleigh) but for the most part I just hang around the WBMUTBB Digest. It is indeed nice to read how everyone here interacts with each other and how you all bouy each other up when things get rough. Very very nice! Hey Possum... many moons ago in So Calif? Cool! We probably have tromped and treaded over some of the same places at one time.

January 06, 2010 - Msg 77061: I hear where you are coming from, Rev. Lots of junk and barf on TV Land. Worse part is that they top load their schedule with stuff of that caliber. A little here and there I can deal with, but to pack their daily programming with it?! *sigh*

REV, thats so sad about those poor dogs. I've always had more of a heart towards animals than I do humans. Just because they dont talk, doesn't mean they dont hurt, and grieve and go through things just like we do. My Little Bit went through that last year when her best doggy friend and his family moved, she was so pitiful. Thankfully they came back and forth for awhile, and now have moved back permanent.

TV Land just is not what it used to be, I'm tired of HSR already and it's not even got started yet. Just the previews for it drives me nuts. I wish they would bring back Emergency, Green Acres, Petticoat Junction anything but MWC, and those blasted movies they play on Friday nights. I'll be returning the soap box now. Big welcome to Albert!! You will love it around here, we're like one big ol family. We laugh together, cry together, and vent together. Hope you all have a good, warm night. Love ya'll-Salty Dog.

Rev-They say we've had over 90 inches of snow already.

albert-That is an interesting take you have there. It seems very plausible to me. I know I've tried to stay off my soapbox. I hope you become a regular. That's one of the best parts of the Porch, it's never too small. Floyd built a mighty fine place here. Have you checked out his "Two Chairs no waiting"? January 07, 2010 - Msg 77069: Good morning, porch! Brrrr! It's cold here! How cold is it? Dang cold! It's 25 degrees right now, up from around 20, I think. I was at work, didn't even know it was getting icy until the day shift started calling in and apologizing, saying they would be late. Didn't bother me, I got in an extra hour. Won't hurt the check any. And now I'm home, Toye Starr is a happy puppy, and I'm going to settle deeply into my chair with something good to eat, and feed her some little tidbits, and just have a good old time.

BTW, Spot. I just have to pick up on your statement that the pup won't be in the house. My friend, you don't know what you're missing. I used to have outside dogs too, but believe me, I've been converted. There's just nothing like a comfortable old friend snoozing at your feet on a cold night. I doubt you would go in much for a little morsel like my Starr, but big old goofy labs and retrievers and other big dogs make great company in the house too. Try it - you just might like it! What could be more American than a big friendly dog curled up by the fireplace? They can be pretty funny in the hot summertime too, when they sprawl on their backs under a ceiling fan, and cool their bellies!

REV, Starr still does that little "leap" of hers to get up that step. She never just hops up, she sails from about three feet back, like a tiny gazelle. Sugarplum would do the same thing, until about the last two years of her life, when I guess arthritis was slowing her down a little. Poor sweet baby, she was so brave, and made the best of whatever life handed her, right to the end. I'd have spent my last dime and then some, if it would have bought her some happy, healthy time, but the vet advised against treating the cancer, said it would not save her life, but only prolong her death. So I let her go, and then God sent me my little Toye Starr, and I know Sugarplum would be pleased. She's just a delight.

Well, guess I'd better go feed the "delight" before she dries up and blows away. Heehee, I don't have to work again until Sunday night. Oh wait, I'm on call from 3 a.m. until 7 a.m. tonight! I doubt I'll be called though, and if I am it will be time and a half, so that's okay.

Be blessed, everyone! See you later. --Romeena

January 07, 2010 - Msg 77082: Interesting question, Asa. God might have to send an even stronger message to the knotheads in charge around the globe before its all too late.

January 07, 2010 - Msg 77083: Hey, porch! Boy, am I a happy camper! It's going to be miserably cold here tonight, and just as I was feeling thankful that I could stay in, I got the call from the hospital, to come in at 3 a.m. Argh! Oh well, so be it, but I sure was drooping around here. Then about an hour ago, they called and said forget it, nursery had an extra nurse and they're sending her to postpartum, therefore the on-calls wouldn't be needed. Yay!! I am no longer a droopy, unhappy camper.

I went out back just now to check on the pond and stuff, since it's freezing out there. Glad I did. Leaves had blown onto the leaf net and gathered in a bunch, right where my little bronze fish was spitting a stream of water on them. Naturally, the water puddling on the leaves was freezing, and building up more and more, causing the net to sag into the water. It would probably eventually have pulled up the tie-down stakes, and anyway that pile of leaves in the water was exactly what the net is supposed to prevent. The leaves release tannic acid that causes problems with the water quality. So, freezing in my nightshirt and nothing else, I'm out there with a dip net, breaking up the frozen leaves and scooping them off until I was able to free the cover net and tighten it up again, and make it so the fish's stream was hitting pond water, not leaves. I hope it holds until morning. Those poor little fish! They don't seem to mind the icy water, though. Must have anti-freeze in their veins. Hmmm. Do fish have veins? They have hearts, so I guess they do.

Good grief, I'm babbling. I think I froze my brain out there. Time for some hot tea. Later, taters. --Romeena

January 07, 2010 - Msg 77084: Oh, Albert. I'm enjoying your Trekkie references. I've always been a bit of a Trekkie, though not a really serious one. I loved the old originals, and then became a fan of Capt. Picard and his crew as well. Never went much beyond that, though. I did see the newest movie, and was part of the crowd that stood and cheered in the theater when Leonard Nimoy made his appearance. Very good movie, by the way.

So, can you do the Trekkie salute? I can, at least with my right hand. My arthritic left doesn't respond quite as smoothly, but I can do a pretty fair split with it, just not as good as the right. Ha! Good fun. --Romeena

January 07, 2010 - Msg 77085:
Asa-I think you may have something there. As for "global warming" the globe has/had gone through a warming period, like it always has. Here's an interesting fact for the last 12 years the globe has actually cooled. And, here's a bonus fact, there are more polar bears now than there were 40 years ago, when they weren't endangered of extinction. Go figure. The "sky is falling" crowd always gets the press.

Peace,

January 07, 2010 - Msg 77088: Romeena, the Blackhearted Buzzard and I have a huge fish pond. It has a heater to keep a hole open for oxygen when it freezes. The fish go into a sleepy state when cold and are not harmed if they can get fairly deep in the water. It's
-19 here and with a windchill of -45 tonight.
The 20 degree reports by other Porch friends sounds balmy!! Iv'e been feeding the little birds outside and they are loving it.

January 07, 2010 - Msg 77089: Possum, I wish you lived down here. You are such a hoot and I just know we could have a blast getting into mischief.

Gaw-lee, the way people are acting down here in South Texas you would think we were entering the ice age. I am enjoying the cold because I have heat and a warm place to sleep. I really feel sorry for the homeless or animals who are left outside in this weather, though.

Just about everyone I know is sitting in front of their TV's watching the game between Texas and Alabama. These Texans get really radical when it comes to football.

Better go spend a little time with Erin.

January 07, 2010 - Msg 77090: I just read your post, ASA. I missed it the first time. You know, what you are saying is interesting...maybe it is an answer to many prayers.

January 08, 2010 - Msg 77096: Have fun and be safe Rev. Hope it's warm down there for you.

Well Spot, I'd still like to see Alabama now play Boise State. It only seems right. You know what I mean?

I wasn't trying to be obtuse with my question earlier. But it sure seems the more this idea of global warming is pushed, the more "natural events" we see taking place that seems to cause one to wonder. I mean how many times in the last few years have we read about a "special global warming conference" being held somewhere, only to have it cancelled or at least seriously reduced in size because of a massive snow storm or cold front going on at the conference site.

I remember back in the mid 70's MDC and Auh2o, about all the hype concerning a new ice age we were entering. And all of these scare and doom and gloom predictions always come with the warning if we don't do something right now about this, life will cease to exist in 5, 10, 20 years. And the things that are usually proposed are things that typically will hurt our freedoms and free enterprise system. Don't get me wrong, I believe we have an obligation to be good stewards of the earth and to take good care of the things God has blessed us with. He has blessed us with dominion over the things of the earth. We should, and do take that seriously I believe for the most part. But when laws are put in that will affect only U.S. manufacturing, forcing jobs and industry overseas, all in the name of saving the planet, I have to throw the B.S. flag. Anyway, I've said to much. Didn't mean to go off on a tangent.

It's Friday and I'm glad for it. Almost have that first week of Jan. behind us and that's ok with me. I'm ready for spring.

Asa

January 08, 2010 - Msg 77097: Mornin' y'all- We didn't get so much as a snowflake down here!! So much for the great Southern snowball fight. Spot, did you get any snow?

January 08, 2010 - Msg 77098: Good morning everyone. I think ASA is onto something about the prayer/global warming thing. Maybe it has been prayers that are interceeding with warming? Just a thought.

I gotta go with the vast majority of scientists (the doom and gloom crowd) on its existence. I'm no scientist, though, so I could be trotting down the garden path. But, then again, so could the naysayers.

I guess it wouldn't even be an issue if we all did what we should and weren't wasteful, were good stewards of the land, and thought of others (even in other nations) before ourselves. But when we're doing things like blowing the tops off mountains to run our cable tv and building McMansions to satify our desire to accumulate more "stuff," I'm not sure we are taking it seriously enough.

Have a great day.

Hey Folks

MDC-I'll take our cold weather any day over the heat you folks get. 118 degrees would be the end of me.

spot-ROLL TIDE ROLL!!

Me-They Hey Buddy! Good to see you. I think a "vast majority" of everybody believes the earth warmed. (However, it has also cooled for over a decade now.) I don't believe the vast majority of scientists agree on what caused it. They don't even know if we can, or even if we should, try and fix it. Being goods stewards has very little to do with running around in a panic.

Asa-Bingo! It's a power grab for socialists.

Peace,
auh2o

January 08, 2010 - Msg 77106: Good afternoon, porch. It's 24 degrees here (up from 18)in north Texas, sure wish somebody would send some of that global warming this way. All I'm going to say on the subject is this - Mr. Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" apparently was based on some very "inconvenient UNtruths", and I think he and his cronies owe us all an apology. The big flap he caused has cost this country a lot of money, and the repercussions will be felt for some time to come. Shame on him, and speaking of McMansions, I'd like to hear Mr. Gore's justification for the resource-guzzler he occupies. I'll bet he uses curly lightbulbs, though, so that makes it all okay.

Why do we Americans, individually and collectively, always seem to jump the gun on issues, instead of waiting for all the data to come in? Case in point - at my hospital, our ceiling lighting was limited to big, harsh fluorescent tube fixtures. So, they went to no small expense to install ceiling can lights in our patient rooms, and to install rheostat switches on them. This was a great idea, since it allows for very low, peaceful lighting at night, like candlelight. Staff can see to check on the patient, and the patients can still sleep without a blaring light in their face. At the same time, our administration decided to "go green" and install the curly lightbulbs in all fixtures that would accept them, including the new overhead cans. Well, you know what happened. Try to dial that rheostat down to dim the harsh fluorescent light, and the bulb dims a little to a sickly gray/green light, then buzzes or rings and goes out. Result - the new fixtures are not used, and we nurses reverted back to leaving our patients in the dark, or leaving their bathroom doors open a little for safety, and carrying our little pocket flashlights. Thank you, Mr. Gore.

jennie, it's nice to see you. Sounds like your pond is a lot bigger than mine. Mine is just under a thousand gallons, with a surface area of roughly 75 sq ft, and the depth ranges from 15" to 2 1/2 feet. There are three aeration sources - a tiny waterfall that flows from the top of a small boulder, a little "umbrella" fountain, and a bronze fish that spits a stream back into the pond. With all of that, the surface is moving slightly at all times, and so far has never frozen over. It gets a little rime of ice around the edges, and when the leaf net is in place and leaves collect, ice will form where the water hits the leaves, but that's all. I can't imagine what it would take to freeze the entire surface. I know that water is bone-cracking cold, though, so I can't help but feel sorry for the fish.

Well, got some errands to run, better "get to it!" Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

January 08, 2010 - Msg 77109: "An Inconvenient Truth" is a terrible book. At least that is my opinion of it. AUH2O: I vote "yes" to good stewardship and regulations that promote that ideal, and a big "no" to running around in a panic and media hype.

Well, I'll talk to y'all again in a few!

January 08, 2010 - Msg 77110: Hey Friday Porchers! I sure do hope things are going well in all your respective areas of the Front Porch today. I do feel for all of you that are living in the states that are experiencing these sub-zero and extreme cold climate conditions. I can deal with 100+ degree heat, but icy & cold weather is not my cup of tea. (makes my bones ache to even think about weather conditions some of you are going through now.)
BIG football weekend starting tomorrow! Should be nice. (reeeeeal nice!)

- Big Maude: What's mayfiled milk?
- Romeena: I can't Vulcan salute worth beans, but I can arch my eyebrow like Spock. I also made my own Romulan ale in my younger years (high proof gin w/blue food coloring). A potent potable indeed!
Hey!! What's all this about toilet sitting??! That's practically a sport over here at the local Home Depot. Al Gore and his movie.... my eyes glazed over about twenty minutes into it. Something about his voice always does that to me (lol). Congrats to Alabama on their win and National Championship. (wow! I almost thought that Texas was going to come back and pull off a win. Man! That last botched play of theirs at the end of the first half was a killer. Yikes!)

albert-I enjoy those "Two Chairs No Waiting." I'll have to try them with headphones.

M-T Well, running around in panic is exactly what they're doing. They don't know what caused the warming, they didn't except it to ease like it did, they can't even agree in what century the temperature will rise 1/100th of a degree and turn Greenland back into green land. But, they're darn sure taxing "BIG Business" and penalizing the U.S. will fix it. Sorry, that dog don't hunt.
