November 30, 2011 - Msg 86435: Oh Honey!...do I have a good bread pudding recipe. I got it out of Southern Living magazine several years ago. I will have to find it in my recipe file. If you like bananas, you will like it..if you don't, well, you won't. It is kind of a Banana's Foster bread pudding, in which you saute' sliced bananas in butter and then cook with brown sugar and put it between your bread slices...so good! Being from south texas, and bread pudding being a very Mexican dish, I have eaten it with all sorts of ingredients...peanuts, fruit, even cheese (and I would leave out the cheese! eww).

To answer your question, Asa, I am finally taking it easy today. I have only made breakfast (biscuits, fried ham and cream gravy), cleaned the kitchen, started the dishwasher, and put in a load of laundry. I have also, leisurly enjoyed my breakfast while watching a favorite old classic, "The Shop Around the Corner". I have to come up with something for dinner, but other than that, I am taking it easy the rest of the day. We have our annual "church greening" service this evening and I already made cookies to take last night (Snickerdoodles). I made them from a very simple recipe using cake mix and the kids loved them. Let me share that recipe with you since it is SO simple:
You will need:
1 box of yellow cake mix
2 eggs
1/3 cup of oil
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 Cup of sugar
2 teaspoons of cinnamon.
All you have to do is mix together the cake mix, eggs, oil and vanilla (just hand mix). The dough will be sticky but that's ok. Then you put the sugar and cinnamon in a bowl and mix that. Using your hands, form the dough into 1 inch balls, roll in sugar/cinammon mixture and put on a cookie sheet (greased lightly) and bake at 350 for 8 to 10 minutes. I use my convection oven and it only takes 7 minutes, so check your cookies after about 7 minutes. They should puff up and crack on the surface and be slightly browned at the edges when ready. Try it some night.

Well, guess I will go make me some more coffee.

December 01, 2011 - Msg 86442: Hey G-F I've worked with stained glass for about 25 years, laid it down for a long time while my son was growing up and played on teams and needed to be run hither and yon for ball games and such. I really do enjoy it. I do the foil and solder method, never tried to work with came. I finally got up the nerve to make something from a photograph and I must say, I'm pretty proud of it. What do you have in mind for your next project? I'm working on some orders I got while I was set up at our Bull Terrier Nationals, then have a few requests that I need to work up a pattern for. :)
Here's a link to my other FB album of glass projects I've done. You can tell my Bullie heads have changed some since I made my first pattern :)
The blue Rufus one is of him winning Westminster Kennel Club dog show in 2006. I donated it to be auctioned off for Bull Terrier rescue.

December 01, 2011 - Msg 86443: Mavis,You sure have been busy I detect a theme to your work..don't you just love working with all the various colors It's what makes this hobby fun and creative to do. I'm building a partition/shelf wall between our kitchen & dining room. I have an antique oak book cabinet door I'm going to put a tree, bird, birdhouse theme in, and hang it from the shelf. Will help me get thru the cold winter here...G-F....

December 01, 2011 - Msg 86444: Good morning, porch! Wow, Mavis, you really do beautiful work! I love stained glass, and at one time entertained the idea of getting involved in it myself, but I have had so many "foibles" as my Dale called them, and usually abandon them after a while, so decided maybe I wouldn't do it. I'd probably sink too much money in it and then not follow through.

It's cold and gray here today. Not raining, but looks like it could. David is supposed to come over today to get my deer placed and powered, and the ground and shrub twinkles out. I can do part of it, but the whole project is too much for me. I hope the weather cooperates. Then I have a few little details to finish in the house, and I'm ready for December! Got the bunco girls coming tomorrow night, and want the house all done by then.

Well, guess I'll get the Nativity down out of my closet and get it set up on the dining room credenza. The way my house is built, that spot in the dining room is visible from the entire den, part of the kitchen, and my "office". It's very central, and since I put lights under and around it, it really stands out. It's an old ceramic set I made many years ago, and I do enjoy it. I wish I could find a really pretty and tasteful large display for the front yard, but they're hard to find. When you do find one, it costs a small fortune. So, I have three lighted letters - J O Y - and a six-foot lighted cross. It's pretty, and effective, I think.

You know, for years I've toyed with the idea of putting a Star of David in a window, and perhaps a menorah. After all, Christ was a Jew, and was the fulfillment of all they have hoped for through the centuries. My intention would be to include them, and to offer them the Good News, as Jesus told us to do. However, I'm afraid the Jewish community would not understand, and would be insulted, perhaps angered. I don't want to do that, so I've never done it, but still the thought lingers. Maybe I should ask one of my Jewish friends what they think about it.

Well, gotta run. David just called, he's about ten minutes away, and I'm sitting here in my nightie. Better pull on some grubbies and prepare to work! Blessings! --Romeena

December 02, 2011 - Msg 86448: Howdy Porch Happy Friday.

Boy do we have a mess here. We got hit hard with those canyon winds I spoke about. Had gusts up to 102 mph in one area. I counted 8 18 wheelers tipped on there sides on my drive to Salt Lake. They finally closed the freeway down to all traffic right after I got through. Trees down, signs down, power poles down, I was without power for 26 hours yesterday. Many will be without for 2 or 3 days. Better get out here Spot! 1 County alone estimates over 8 million dollars in damage.
Now the clean up begins. Chain saws and chippers are in big demand.
And off I go. Gonna be a busy bank guard for a few days.

December 02, 2011 - Msg 86451: Gooood morning, porch!! Gray, dreary skies here today, very light drizzle, 50 degrees. I had planned to get the twinkles out in the back yard today, but I'm not doing it in this weather! The deer are up and looking pretty, so that's enough. The front yard is all finished, so when my bunco gals arrive tonight, the house will look festive. So instead of working in the back yard, I'll stay in and concentrate on the house. I don't have to cook, except for baking a ham, because everyone is bringing something. I guess my first task will be to finish getting the Nativity on display, then a quick cleanup, bathe Toye Starr, get the extra table set up, and all three tables arranged with cloths, etc., and maybe rest an hour or two before the girls arrive. Eloise won't be here, she's gone to West Texas to visit her twin sister, so I've got to "go it alone". She usually comes early and helps me set up.

Asa, that wind sounds murderous! I didn't realize you folks had to contend with that weather anomaly - does it happen often? I guess I couldn't live there, I just hate a high wind.

I think I told you all about my beautiful little fantail comet, the one I thought was dying - or maybe I didn't. Anyway, she would just hang at the surface of the water, draped sideways in a C-shape, and looking like she was dead. If I disturbed her though, she'd right herself and take off. She would swim almost normally for a couple of minutes, then turn on her side and float back to the surface. A malfunction with her swim bladder, according to my water garden store friend, and she said the fish would eventually die. She suggested a brief brine bath, but didn't hold out much hope. I did the brine bath, and it didn't appear to help much. However, yesterday she was swimming on her own, a little wobbly but almost normal. I'm hoping she may actually recover. I hope so - I hate to see a little creature in distress.

Well, better get busy. Much to do, and time is fleeting. I'd love to sit here and watch the squirrels arrive, as they do about this time every morning, but I can't do it today. Blessings, friends! -- Romeena

December 04, 2011 - Msg 86460: Morning. Hope you are all well this sunday morning.

Can't chat long..have to get ready for preachin' but wanted to check in. Been a good weekend so far. Bruce and I took the kids to a Christmas concert last night in Goliad, which is a very historical small town not far from us, where so much Texas history took place. There are some beautiful old missions there built in the 1700's and in the most beautiful one, called Mission Espiritu Santo, they held the concert inside the old chapel. It was just beatiful. The chapel was lit only with candles and a couple of plug-in lights that spotlighted the choir. If you can picture it, the mission chapel looks much like it looked originally, very modest but lovely and there were lighted luminaries lining the path up the hill to the mission. The singing, with the acoustics inside the chapel, was beyond beautiful. It sure it will have been the highlight of the christmas season for me. Amazing. It was an hour's drive, but certainly worth it. We tried to make it in time for a Posada at another mission but missed it. That mission was called Presidio La Bahia mission and was where General Fannin was help captive and killed. That mission is amazing, too. The chapel is more ornate and just beautiful and there is a statue of Mary in the chapel that is from the 1700's. It really was like going back in time.

Well, better finish the coffee and get moving. Full day today. Church, play practice for Erin, youth christmas party....

Hi all. I'm just checking in on Sunday evening.
I didnt tell you on Thursday, but actually I flew to Minneapolis that day to attend a service for my uncle, my 93 year old dad's brother, who was a young 88! He was my last living blood relative from Mpls, the place of my birth. I went mainly to represent my dad, and I got to speak at the service, telling them of how he was such a good uncle to us kids when we would go back there on family vacations in the 50s,60s, and 70s. It was a very good experience for me.
Weather was about 17 degrees on Friday, the day of the service! Now I'm back in Phx.

December 05, 2011 - Msg 86470: Morning all. Monday is upon us.

MDC, Sorry about your loss, but good on you for going and speaking. I bet the temperaure change got your attention.

We are in the teens this morning and not supposed to get above 30 for our high. Too dang cold for this early in the year.

Boo, I was busy all weekend helping clean up. Most of the churches here cancelled services so folk could get out and help with the clean up. Another wind storm was expected for last night and the concern was with all the tree limbs and everythin sitting about it could be dangerous. The Gov. even called out the Nat. Guard to come help. Thank goodness most of the work got done yesteray afternoon, and the predicted high winds were not so bad, and isolated to the canyon mouth areas. There are still some areas without power but Rocky Mountain Power says they should all be back on sometime today. So things are settling down finally.

Spot, I happy Miss Sherry had a good day yesterday. I hope that trend continues.

Well better get rolling.

Prayers for all.

December 05, 2011 - Msg 86478: Good afternoon, porch! It's a dreary, gray and chilly 41 degrees here today. Feels colder somehow. We've had a good deal of rain, which we needed so badly. In fact, our need was so great that I can't bring myself to complain when the rain causes most of my outside Christmas lights to go off. They're all plugged into GFI-protected outlets, and when it rains, those things kick off in a split second! There's one little group - my old snowman and some twinkles - that will stay lit, because they're plugged into the original outlet on the front porch, which was installed when the house was built, and GFIs didn't exist at that time. When Ted put in all the extra outlets in the eaves and out in the back yard, insisted that they all be GFIs. I think they're code now, though they weren't at the time, he just said they were safer and he wanted me to have the protection. He's a good guy! The bloomin' things are annoying, but I know he's right. Anyway, it hasn't rained today, so they all accepted resetting, and then I had to go around and update eight timers! I wish someone would invent timers with a battery backup so they don't lose their time when the power goes off. Wait - no, I don't, because then I'd have to replace them all and the things are a bit pricey.

Possum, prayers for you indeed. I know how you have struggled with the decision you have apparently reached. It has been hard, and you have given it every chance. It isn't something you've taken lightly. We're here for you, don't forget that.

Toye Starr finally got a pawdicure, and not before she needed it. Her little toenails were really long! She also got one of her immunizations, but he only gave her one. She needs her rabies as well, but she'll get that next week. Dr. Mike doesn't like to give her two things at once, because she's so tiny, still well under five pounds. She doesn't seem to be bothered by the one she got today, she's just tootling around here as busy as ever. Sweet little thing. REV, I'll bet you spend your evening just like I'm going to spend mine - with a little furkid cuddled in my lap. Give Jake a little hug and a kiss from me - sure would like to meet that little guy. I hope he continues to do well.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Happy St Nicholas day to those so persuaded.
Saint Nicholas, also called Nikolaos of Myra, was an historic 4th-century Greek Bishop of Myra (Demre, in Lycia, part of modern-day Turkey). He is also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins into the shoes of those who left them outside, and thus became the model for our modern Santa Claus, whose name comes from the Dutch Sinter Klaas, itself from a series of mistranslations of "Saint Nikolaos". His reputation evolved slowly but steadily among the faithful. In 1087, his relics were transferred to Bari, in southeastern Italy. For this reason, he is also known as Nikolaos of Bari. His feastday is Dec 6.

Just got home from the ladies' Christmas dinner at church. Very nice, the speaker was Debbie Stuart and she was marvelous! And we had door prizes! I came home with a beautiful carved cross, about 14" tall, and the carvings depict the Christmas story. It will make a lovely annual wall decoration. I love things like that.

Well, I'm going to make a cup of hot tea, get Toye Starr in my lap, and watch a feel-good movie on TV. If there aren't any on right now, no problem, I have several recorded. My kind of winter night! Blessings, friends! --Romeena

December 07, 2011 - Msg 86497: Morning porch, checking in this morning from the Northeast Tenn side of the porch. A very rainy morning here with temps expected to drop throughout the day. some light snow is expected tonight apparently.

I made it to work early today, around 7:45 am for an 8am appointment who of course called to cancel! aggravates me when that happens! I rescheduled her for 8:30 am next time, that way I won't be rushing around trying to get here so early. 30 minutes makes a big difference in the early morning!

I have been busy on my end of the porch, work, home stuff and getting things ready for Christmas. Ole Maude here needs to talk to Malcolm Merriweather if anybody has seen him... I could use his help.

Prayers for you Possum, enough is enough and you gotta do what is best for you.

I did get to watch the last part of Ralphie last night BOO. I love that movie. I saw that Walgreens have some Christmas ornaments from the movie, one was Ralphie dressed as the pink bunny, so cute. Poor Ralphie.

well guess I had better get breakfast ready so I can get to work.

Menu will be: scrambled eggs, toast with jelly, apple butter, bacon, sausage. coffee, tea, juice.
somebody get the paper please.

Thanks for remembering my friend Terrie. She has had a good week, was able to get out some and ate much better, I took her some toll house cookies Saturday, she looks good and her spirits were good. She has a treatment next Wednesday and then 2 in January and then will be done! keep remembering her please.

Prayers for everyone especially for SPOT, Miss Sherry and Possum .

Hey Folks

Hazel-I almost spit my coffee all over this PC, with that "fish" comment. This may not ring true (but it is) HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Been busy with jury duty and looking for a car, ours finally gave up the ghost. So, we brought us a spanking brand new used car. As for the jury duty, we were split 5-1 and you'll never guess who the one was.

Mavis-Holy smokes! Good to see you!

possum-Prayers for you my friend.

GF-Thanks for the APB a few days ago.

Spot-You may have to make your way up here, freezing rain now and snow later.

Asa-I don't believe the teachers even acknowledge the day of infamy anymore. I hope I'm wrong.

Peace,

December 07, 2011 - Msg 86505: Auh2o, I believe you because Hazel has made me spit coffee on my keyboard more than once! What kind of car did you buy??

Maude, MDC is right. Malcom may make you wear a hat, tie and lap blanket but who cares?....as long as he takes care of the cooking and cleaning. I would wear a clown suit if somebody took over my chores! PS-glad to hear your friend is doing well.

No, G-F, Bernie is not chasing the donkey but he is growing. He is starting to look like a rooster so I guess my observation was correct. He is getting a long, rooster neck and a bright red comb on his head. His companion, Skippy, is growing like a weed and looks like a hen now. They are very messy critters! They sling food and dropping everywhere and I never saw an animal grow as fast as these chickens.

Hey, I think its about time to start sharing some Christmas memories...I don't want to go first, though. Put on your thinking caps, Amigos/Amigas.

Yesterday I made some Christmas memories with Erin. We went into town to do a little shopping at this great place called, "Bleu Frog Emporium"...it is a gift shop that has beautiful christmas decor and so many unsual gift ideas. I bought mom-in-law's christmas gift there and would like to have bought out the whole store but, you know. After that I took Erin out to eat at our favorite sandwich shop and then a drive to the old neighborhood Bruce grew up in. His boyhood home looked well cared for and was lit up for Christmas. I let Erin play for awhile in the little park down the street where Bruce played football with his friends as a child. After that we took a drive and looked at some lights. I think she really enjoyed it. It has been cold here this week (relatively speaking, of course). It did freeze her last night and we have had three freezes in the past month, which is unheard of this far south. I have had the fireplace going alot.

Well, better go get some chores done.

auh2o, speaking of jury duty, that reminds me of something funny. I was helping out some elderly neighbors (a brother and sister) who both developed terminal cancer six months apart. After the sister passed away, because the brother had such poor eye sight, he asked me to read all her mail for him. One was an application to see if she qualified for possible jury duty. I decided to have some fun and fill it out as if I was her.
After providing a page full of her personal information, the final question was "Is there any reason why you believe you should not be selected for jury duty?". I wrote "Yes, I'm dead". I mailed the letter and she was never selected.

TOM, so glad to hear your stepdad and sister-in-law are feeling better.

possum, so sorry to hear about your pending legal action. Pray that it can be dealt with amicably to minimize the expenses and the misery.

December 07, 2011 - Msg 86514: R.I.P., Harry Morgan. One of the all-time great character actors, and definitely a favorite of mine. Did you know that his horse "Sophie" in the MASH episodes was actually his own horse? --Romeena

December 07, 2011 - Msg 86515: Wow, Harry lived a long, full life. Didn't know that about the horse.

Funny about the jury summons, PH.

Been a festive day. Had visits by three different friends today, which was great. The fire was going all day and a pot of coffee was on and I even made some peanut butter cookies. First, my friend and pastor, Mark came by to get some firewood for the church's christmas festival this weekend and he had cup of coffee and a short visit. About as soon as he left, my dear friends Pat and Tom dropped by to pick up the costumes for the live nativity for the christmas festival and they stayed for an hour, chatting. I really enjoyed it. I love having friends drop by during the holidays...just makes things more special. My friend, Tom, was recently ordained to go out and serve the Lord now that he is retired. He has worked for years with youth, particularly those in juvenile detention and drug rehabs. He was a high school principal, too. I am interested to see where the Lord will lead him now..he has certainly prepared him. He knows more about the bible than any man I know.

Well, I could use a nap but its too late now (5:15). One more thing, though...I think I told you all that I had to take dad's weinie dog to the vet because it has stopped eating? I got some pain medicine to dose it with each day because dad is not ready to have her put to sleep and I am afraid that he is hanging on for the dog (and maybe vice-versa). Please send up a prayer for Dad as he faces the approaching passing of his best friend. I know it going to be very painful for him. Also, my sister is having a tough time seeing dad's suffering day in and day out and he is weak now and needs more help. She is also trying to do her volunteer work with her "Christmas for Kids" charity and I am so frustrated right now. I have been praying for her and she is asking for prayer. I have tried so hard to get through to her and make her realize that she has got to stop doing everything for everybody. She is still babysitting Emily twice a week, too. I worry about her but she is about the most stubborn woman I know and won't listen to me. She works herself to death all through december. The work she is doing is admirable but it is just too much for her. I am talking to the Lord and asking him to send someone else to take it over next year...don't know if that is his will, but I believe it is his will for my sister to slow down. Thanks for listening. :)

Better go check on the laundry.

December 08, 2011 - Msg 86523: I think one of my favorite Col. Potter quotes was uttered when the gang was all homesick and quarreling, despondent because a promised cease-fire didn't happen. He talked to them for a while, and finished with "If you ain't where you are, you're no place." That one comes back to me quite often, especially when I'm at work, wishing I was at home. Pretty profound, really.

Well, I'd better get to bed. It's after midnight, and the sleep I get from now until 8 a.m. will be all until Friday morning, when I get home from work. Will be gone all day tomorrow on a day trip with the church, then work tomorrow night. Yuck. What was that Col. Potter said again? (heehee) Blessings, friends! --Romeena

December 08, 2011 - Msg 86524: Boo, I'm not sure but it seems like one of the parents on Christmas Vacation as they are standing outside, waiting for Clark to turn on the lights.

So sad about Col. Potter leaving us. He played that character so very well. He had all kinds of down home wisdom, didn't he? Interesting about Sophie Ro. I didn't know that, but I could sure see it. I loved his line in the episode when Radar hands him the reigns of Sophie. As he is walking around the rear of the horse he slips in some horse poop. Major burns exclaims "that's disgusting!" Col. Potter smiles and says "Son, for me, thats a tip toe through the tulips!" Ha, gotta love that one.

Possum You are still in my prayers. Sadly even after you have done all you can do, this has to happen. Be courageous, and keep close to God. And any help we can offer you here is at hand.

O.K. Boo. "Angels with Filthy Souls". What movie?

Asa

December 08, 2011 - Msg 86525: Good morning, porch! Asa, I loved Radar's line when he handed over Sophie's reins. Col. Potter had said a heartfelt "oh, my!" and Radar said, "It's a horse, sir. Here's the keys!" Right after that is when he slips in the poop. I loved Frank's prissy reaction, and totally identified with Col. Potter's response.

Well, gotta run. Got a Mystery Lunch trip with the church today, and need to go to the bank and get some cash before I leave. Eddie is coming to do some cleanup in the yard, so will leave his money in my little mailbox in the back yard, but right now, I don't have any to leave! Blessings, friends. --Romeena
