Howdy porch family....man I'm bushed. Just got in from my second concert of the day. Been going since 5am but they went good.

So glad some of you got to see it on the internet. Hopefully it was pretty clear. Like I told you before hand, it's a different setting but those folks are so kind.
Hey I'll chat some more tomorrow....I hear that bed in the back of the motorhome calling me.
Love and prayers for all my porch family!

January 16, 2012 - Msg 87088: I'll try to get on the site later Rev. I was busy yesterday at my own church, and my work computer will not allow me entrance to it this morning.

Auh2o, I'm so sorry you have a young-un who is ailing. That is so hard. You and your family are in my prayers.

And thanks to you who took the time to pray for me. I appreciate it. Have not gotten the results back, but the nature of the test I had would suggest no news is good news. At least thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

Boo, my wife has a kindle and just loves it. She is an avid reader, and because of her health can't do much, so she reads all the time. I'm sure you will love yours.

Possum, how serious is the situation with Sherry? Have you heard anything? The last post you made didn't sound good. She and he are certainly in my prayers.

P.H. Good to see you buddy.

Well I best get moving.

Prayers for all.

January 16, 2012 - Msg 87090: Morning Asa, glad you wife enjoys her Kindle. I am going to take mine to see if my mom can use it today. It dawned on me yesterday that it's light weight might help her to read because her hands are so arthritic that she has trouble holding a book and I can make the font size large enough for her to see it easily. I hope she likes it so I can buy her one.

Asa, please let us know about those tests when you hear something.

Morning SPOT. Hope Sherry has a better day today. She is in my prayers this morning.

Thanks for sharing that link, REV. I will take a look at it.

Well, better get to the chores. laundry HAS to be done today or we will be out of socks and underwear, which can't happen. I have to go see dad today and convince him that it's time for a shower, too, which is never an easy task! Wish me luck.

January 16, 2012 - Msg 87091: I thought you guys might enjoy the latest edition of the Mayberry Bible Study Podcast: Rafe Hollister Sings.

This is a special episode of the podcast because it was recorded live on the Mayberry Cruise (Nov 12-17, 2011). Romeena was there on the cruise with us so this will give the rest of you an idea about what you missed.

We start off with a special message from Ronnie and Elease Felker (as Barney and Thelma Lou) about the things that are required to get into heaven which will remind you of the scene when Barney was trying to recite the preamble to the Constitution.

January 17, 2012 - Msg 87102: Don't worry, MDC, I washed some clothes. :)

TOM, I'm not sure yet how often someone will be out to see dad. I think the nurse comes once a week and not sure who else.

I'm whooped! Been a busy day but productive, I guess. Dad finally got a shower and put on some clean clothes. My sister bought him some sweatpants since all his faithful khaki pants are too big now. He was trying to walk around with one hand on the walker and one holding up his pants! Hopefully he will like them and not have too much of a struggle since they don't have a fly....could be an accident waiting to happen.

You all should have seen me earlier...you would have gotten a laugh. After I got home, i went to check on the chickens who are still having to stay in a small cage while the coop is being finished. I have another larger chicken pen that i decided i would put them in so I could clean the current cage. So, I reached in and grabbed Bernie, who is a pretty good-sized rooster at this point, and he started flapping like crazy so I had him by the feet and was carrying him upside down out to the larger chicken pen. When I got there, I threw open the lid and it broke off. I managed to pick up the lid and get it back up on top of the pen while holding the flapping chicken in one hand and was able to get him into it and close the lid, then I had to repeat the process with the other chicken. What a pain. Must have been a funny sight with me out there in my shorts and rubber boots holding a flapping chicken in one hand and a lid in the other. If any of you with kids have ever seen the cartoon, "Courage the Cowardly Dog," you will know who "Miriam" is. When Bruce sees me out back with those rubber boots on he calls me Miriam and I guess that's about what I look like, too.

Better get back to finishing dinner. Meatloaf, green beans, mashed taters and carrot cake for dessert. Ya'll come on over.

January 18, 2012 - Msg 87106: Good very late evening, or early morning, folks! I've been listening to Floyd's podcast - "Rafe Hollister Sings" - on the new site. I love the podcasts, because you can get them going, then minimize them on your screen and continue to play Free Cell or whatever, while you listen. I especially liked that one, because as Floyd mentioned earlier, Eloise and I were there in the room when that one was recorded. It was fun to hear it, and in my mind, I had the mental pictures to go with it!

Folks, if anyone thinks there is any chance you might go on this year's cruise, I'd highly recommend it. The ship will sail from Miami on October 29, and return on November 2. You can sign up now, send a deposit, and then every month you can send a little, and by October, you're all paid! It's practically painless, and believe me, you will have fun. Last year, Eloise and I paid just a bit more and got a stateroom with a balcony. That was fun! One afternoon, I sat out on that balcony with a big old glass of tea and a good book, and would read a little, then watch the ocean for a while, then read some more, and finally just had a little nap. So pleasant! We're getting a balcony room again this year. The food is great - waaaay too much of it - and the company is even better, of course. You would meet our dear Floyd and his lovely wife, and many other Mayberry personalities. The tribute artists are terrific, Elvis always puts in some appearances (he's great!) and truly, it's just a wonderful time. Think about it!

Well, I've still got this silly sore throat, it's not bad, but it just won't go away. I'm really getting tired of it.

Prayers for each of us who needs them, especially for Miss Sherry and our Spot, as they continue their battle. Dear Lord, please let someone find that "magic bullet" soon. So many other diseases have been put under submission, I pray that this one will soon be conquered as well. We would ask this in that Name that is above every other name - Jesus' blessed name. Amen.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

And Spot, I am so sorry Sherry is having a tough go of it. Hang in there friend. Our prayers are with you both during this tough time.

Possum, how you doing? Sure hope things are on the rise for you. Likewise, you are in our prayers.

Tom, As has been said, life just gets hectic sometimes. But we always find our way back to the porch.

Plenty to do and homeschool, too! I guess that's my moto. I have been having to spend more time with Dad and Mom and am having a tougher time keeping things straight around here. Been feeling sluggish, too. I really need to get a regular exercise program going and lose some weight and things would be easier. Maybe this is the year. ;)

Sounds like you have certainly had alot to deal with, G-F. Glad you got those Texas and Alabama girls to help you out. :) You found a body that had been in an apartment for 2 weeks? Yikes. I guess that can happen when someone lives alone. There was no foul play suspected, was there?

So sorry to hear that Miss Sherry is feeling "wore down" but I can certainly understand why, bless her. You give her a little hug from us, will you?

Hope you get rid of that sore throat soon, Ro.

Mornin' to you, REV. Hope you have a great day. If you don't have anything pressing to do, i could use some help around here. You could let the chickens out of the barn for some sunshine and feed them, or you could let Thelma Lou and the goats out to graze. I could also use some help sweeping off my porch and cleaning windows.... ;)

Better get going. More laundry to do, then cleaning and cracking the whip over Erin to get her schoolwork done. Be back if i get a coffee break.

January 18, 2012 - Msg 87115: Good morning, porch! Looks like everyone is up and bustling around, getting things done. Everyone except me. I stayed up late, slept late, and as soon as the vise in my back lets go (it will) I'll get moving too. It's 36 degrees here this morning, so I'm finally going to get my tulip bulbs planted. They're about three weeks late, but it has been so warm here I've been afraid to plant them. I usually get them in the ground during the week between Christmas and New Year, but as warm as it has been, they'd have sprouted and come up by now. Then in February, when it will likely get very cold, they'd have been frozen back and would never have bloomed. They're in the garage fridge right now, just chillin', and I'm hoping that this little cold snap outside will cool the soil enough that they won't bolt. If they do, it's gonna cost me, because I've got about a hundred bulbs, acquired in small groups over the past few months. I don't know why I even try to grow tulips - Texas isn't exactly a tulip-y climate - but I just love 'em, so I keep trying. Some years I get none, or just a few, and some years, if the weather cooperates, I get a really pretty display of them.

Guess I'd better get dressed. I'm meeting Eloise for lunch first - the tulips will get planted later. We haven't been to lunch together for about three weeks now - with my cold, work, her visit to Lubbock and whatever, it just hasn't worked out. Usually we make it to lunch at least once a week. I miss her!

Well, off I go. Praying for Miss Sherry and Spot, for Boo's dad, for Tom's stepdad, for Possum's ongoing battle, and for everyone else who needs a blessing. I guess that would be just about all of us. --Romeena

Got alot done today but still some to do. Looks like Bruce might not be home until after dark so Sean and I have to go round up the critters and feed them. I'll try to drop back around later.

Boo

January 18, 2012 - Msg 87121: Oh, wanted to mention something. I don't know if we have talked about this before or not but yesterday I was watching the TAGS episode about the new little neighbor boy that didn't have a father so Andy tried to kind of fill in and Opie became jealous. Well, I was watching the scene when the boy is spending the night with Opie and Andy goes to tell them goodnight and he takes the boy out of Opie's bed and takes him to his room to sleep with him. Boy, you wouldn't see that today, would you? Sad how things have changed over the years and people have to be suspicious over things like that. Anyone else ever feel a little uncomfortable with that scene?

Boo

January 18, 2012 - Msg 87122: Hey, porch. No, Boo, that scene has never bothered me from that standpoint, because I guess I didn't think Andy was actually going to bed himself at that point. I had the impression that he was just separating the boys so they'd go to sleep, like I do my grandsons, and then would put Trey back in Opie's room after he fell asleep. The only thing that bothered me a little was that he gave the other boy the "special privilege" and not Opie, but I figured Andy was just trying to make the other boy feel extra-special. You're right, though. No way could a man take that chance today. There are a lot of kids on David and Brittney's street, but David never, ever, allows any of them in the house unless Brittney is there - boys or girls, doesn't matter. If Brittney isn't home, no kids come in the house. And yes, that is sad.

Well, I'm tired and I think I'm going to run up to the corner and get a burger and bring it home for dinner, then curl up in my chair and watch some TV. I have to be at the hospital at 7 a.m. for a unit conference - can you imagine? Oh well.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

January 19, 2012 - Msg 87123:
RO- Are those 100 watt "bulbs" in the garage? haha
BOO- Just a thought, but perhaps you could explain to the kids about pop needing more help, and then assign some daily animal chores to them. (maybe show 'em an episode of Little House first. ha) But seriously, kids generally love to pitch in when asked, and when they see others in need.
G-F, wow! hope things get better soon.
Beautiful prayer Romeena! thanks.
I'll just add another AMEN. "When two or more are gathered..."
MDC (:

January 19, 2012 - Msg 87124: Thanks, MDC, it is their job to feed the goats, donkey and dog. The chickens are generally my responsibility but when it is time to put up the goats and Thelma Lou, they don't want to go back in the pen, so it takes two of us. Here's the drill: we have to carry a bread bag with us and call them. When they see the bag, they come running and you have to lead them through the gate before they climb all over you for the bread, while someone else closes the gate behind them. Crazy. Anyway, as far as the animals go, what ends up happening alot of the time, though, is that one of the kids is at a friends house when it is getting dark or something and I go ahead and do it myself, or Bruce does if he is home before dark. Right now it gets dark so early that I get stuck doing it sometimes. In the summer, practically never. I really put the kids to work yesterday and Erin earned some extra money for a Lego set she wants. They did well, too. Erin emptied the trash cans, cleaned the litter box, cleaned her room and put away her clothes, did some windows and did the dusting and Sean cleaned their bathroom, his room, and did all the floors for me, so I can't complain. :) It is alot easier to get them to do house chores than to do their homework! So, don't worry my brother, I am making them help me. :)

Poor Ro...a unit conference at 7am. :( How well I remember those days.

Well, better get the kids going. Be back later.

You should have seen the look on Toye Starr's face when I got up at 5:45 this morning. Yes, dogs definitely do make facial expressions. She was looking at me like I had just grown a tail. "Are you out of your cotton-pickin' mind!?! It's dark outside, get back in this bed!" Who says dogs can't talk? We just have to learn their language.

Well, better get busy. I chose the better part of reason (or something) and called Joe to come and get those tulip bulbs in the ground for me. If I knelt beside flowerbeds and leaned in to plant nearly a hundred tulip bulbs, I would not be able to walk tomorrow. My back would lock up and I would be immobile for a while. So, Joe is coming later. He'll shove those things in the ground in no time, and I'll be walking tomorrow.

Meantime, I've got to go clean up my kitchen. Briscoe Darling would refuse to eat anything I cooked if he could see my kitchen right now. It's a mess! Won't take long to clean it, though. The stove and ovens are clean, it's just cluttered and the sink needs to be scrubbed. I hate a dirty sink!

Well, it's now about seven hours since I started this post - I got sidetracked and forgot I was writing it, the computer went into sleep mode, and I just found this. It's now suppertime! Joe didn't come, he ran out of time on another job, so guess we'll get the tulips in the ground on Saturday. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Prayers continue for miss Sherry!
I could also use some. I went to an orthopedic doctor the other day for hip-related pain, and today they called and said that the x-rays show cartlidge degeneratin.. i.e.- hip arthritis. Dang,
and I was taking gloucosomine! Is this a chink in my all-natural armor? That's life, but i know that prayer works. Thanks gang.
A good weekend to all!
Big Maude where are you??
MDC

January 20, 2012 - Msg 87143: Sorry MDC, but we can only hold back the degeneration for so long. It is just one of those facts of life. Prayer might certainly help, though. :)

Good luck with those tulips, Ro.

Howdy porch family

G-F, ASA & Boo....ya'll need to behave....now I'm gonna be watching lights at funeral procession...lol

Spot...what you feel like you could eat and we'll whip something up:)

MDC....pray your hip gets better.....and yes I still believe in the "natural armor". It's just that nothing is always going to be the magic bullet. The natural way just gives the body the best shot at staying healthy with the least amount of side affects. Not saying you won't have some of the problems that comes with life......and of course I'm preaching to the choir, you already know all this:)

Well gang I'll be away until Monday. Will be busy with concerts and won't have internet till I get back in this area again.
You all have a very blessed weekend!
Love and prayers

January 21, 2012 - Msg 87148: G-F, it is 70 degrees here today but humid and overcast...not exactly a perfect day but I didn't have to shovel any snow. ;)

Fog lights...??? Hmmm, I will have to think about that one. Maybe Asa has an answer.

Feeling like I have cotton in my head today for some reason...even after two cups of coffee. Maybe its the weather.

See you all later.

January 21, 2012 - Msg 87151: Save me some of the chicken and dumplings, too! Yum! I love that dish, and never got to have it very much when I was growing up. My mother had gotten sick on dumplings once, and just never got past the memory, so she never made them. Consequently, I never learned to make them either, so my experience with chicken and dumplings has mostly been at good, down-home restaurants. Maybe I'll try one of these days.

OK, I have to tell you what happened to me Thursday morning. I'm still wondering if I was hallucinating or what! I had to get up before dawn, you may remember, and go to that unit conference at work. Afterward, there was a "cultural diversity" fair presented in the lobby, also a mandatory-attendance thing. So, I finally got back to my car around 9:30, and I was glad to be headed home. I was in the parking garage, facing an exterior wall with huge windows. Outside there are two maintenance buildings, one of which has a catwalk along one side, with a ladder going to the ground. When I got in the car, I noticed something moving on the catwalk, looked like a small cat. Look again. The head and tail looked like a squirrel. Typical squirrel face, small ears, and a very long, very bushy tail that the animal curled up over its back. Cats do not do that. However, it was too large for a squirrel, at least in this area. We have the little brown/gray fox squirrels. This animal was much larger, and was almost black. Now, here's the clincher. It had something red and fluffy on its chest, as though it had a bow around its neck! And no, Col. Harvey hasn't been here, and I haven't been visiting the Morrison sisters, either. I sat and watched the critter, wishing I had my binoculars, and then it decided to leave the catwalk. I knew this would tell me what it was, and it did. It went down the ladder headfirst, which a squirrel would do, but a cat would not. It has to do with the way their ankles are made on their back legs. A squirrel can rotate his so he can hang upside down by those back feet, but a cat can't do that. A cat always has to back down, since all his claws face forward at all times. Anyway, he went down the ladder face first, and I lost sight of him when he dropped below the level of the window. Now, somebody please tell me - what did I see? I've seen very large black squirrels, but they live around Battle Creek. We don't have any squirrels that size or color around here, and if we have any that wear red bowties, I've never seen one before. 'Tis a mystery!

Well, I worked last night, slept all day, and now I'm up and hungry! Don't feel like cooking, though, so guess it will be grilled cheese and soup for me, unless somebody sends me some chicken and dumplings. I'll meet you halfway! Toye Starr would enjoy a car ride.

Blessings, friends! Prayers for Miss Sherry! --Romeena

January 21, 2012 - Msg 87152: Oh Romeena, you have GOT to be hittin' the squeezins! HAHAHAHA Did you see any pink elephants in bowties? *wink*

Boo

January 21, 2012 - Msg 87153: Sorry, that wasn't very nice. I did not know that cats couldn't go down a ladder head first and I don't know what animals can and can't so I wouldn't be much help. I have certainly never seen any big black squirrels. I'm scratching my head on this one.

January 21, 2012 - Msg 87154: Ro, I think it may have been a casquirrel? I hybrid of the two, it leaps buildings at a single bound, or maybe ya just had a looong day?

January 22, 2012 - Msg 87156: Hahaha! A Casquirrel, G-F? Could be, could be..... And no, Boo, there weren't any pink elephants, with or without bowties. I told you I haven't been hitting any elixir! Sure would like to know what that little critter was, though. It occurred to me later that I did have my camera with me, and it has a distance feature that might have been helpful, but I didn't think of it at the time.

As for the way animals can or can't move, think about it. Did you ever see a cat just hang by its back feet, like the squirrels do when they're raiding a bird feeder? They can't do it, unless it's an emergency to keep from falling, and then it's not comfortable or very useful for them. That explains why they sometimes get stranded very high up on a pole or in a tree. If they get high enough, they can't come down headfirst, and they're hesitant to come down backward from very high up, but it's the only way they can do it. A cat could come down a regular ladder, if there was a slight incline to the rungs, so they could drop from one to the other, but this particular ladder was flush with the side of the building, and the critter came down the side railing, which was not slick, solid metal, it had little holes in it. I'm sure he was gripping in those holes with his claws. Anyway, back to the way a squirrels ankles are constructed - they're remarkably flexible, and can rotate a full 180 degrees, so that's why they can run all over the trees the way they do. Whichever way their claws need to be pointed in order to grip, they can do it. Cats can go straight up, or back straight down, or walk horizontally on top of a limb, but that's about it. Believe me, from this window, I've about seen it all. My favorite thing of all was watching that mama squirrel move her babies from one nest box to the other, after she realized I could see the first box. She rolled those little guys up like a sock, and carried them to the new box, except for the one that refused to be rolled up. He finally VERY reluctantly followed her - his first time out of the box, I'm sure. I laughed until I nearly fell out of my chair, watching her roll those little things up. Too funny!

Well, guess I'd better get to bed. It's after 3 a.m., and I'm planning to go to preaching in the morning?? This is what happens when you work all night, come in and sleep most of the day, then can't sleep the next night. I'm just not sleepy now, but you can bet I will be along about church time. I don't know how much longer I can keep this up.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena
