April 02, 2012 - Msg 88007: morning porch, hope everyone is okay! busy week end.. took Beth and her friend Brittney shopping all day on Saturday, then to sunday school and church yesterday.

I meant to get a lot of things done yesterday but somehow I "wacked" my back out again. Not sure how but I move the wrong way or something because all of a sudden I could not move without being in pain. It's pretty much confined to my lower back and down my legs. as long as I don't move I am pretty much out of pain. not sure but its seems muscular rather than sketal (sp). I have been taking naproxen or ibuprophen but not much relief. I triend some of that icy hot rub and aspercreme last night as well as laying in a heating pad. sure hope it goes away soon, I am not a very good patient and neither do I have much patience with things like this! well. thanks for letting my whine for a minute.

Breakfast menu will be: scrambled eggs, toast with apple butter/jelly, bacon, sausage links. coffee, tea, juice to drink.

better get to work/ prayers and blessings to all

April 02, 2012 - Msg 88008: Good morning, Everyone!

A B-E-A-yoo tiful morning this morning! Nice breeze, not a cloud in the sky! GREAT morning for some Cracker Barrel rockin'!

Let's see...believe I'll have some of those eggs...toast with grape jelly, bacon and.....orange juice! Now, if I can just balance the plate on my lap here! LOL!

Best wishes and keeping a good thought for little Amy and family. What a horrible sickness to get! Here's hoping it skates by the rest of the family!

Ro - The ol' heating pad does wonders for my back! Sometimes I can be gritting my teeth and I'll lay on the pad for a good long time and *PRESTO*, no more pain! I get some downright ornery and mean pain right in the small of my back! So bad, it goes clear down behind my knees and into my ankle!

Been watching hockey here lately and I'll tell ya'...looks like it's gonna be the Penguins and Flyers matching up in the first round! And if that happens....WHOO BOY! All....out....war! Should be a dandy!

In Mayberry, I learned that you have to stand on your own two feet, that gamblin' is gamblin' and it's hard to get a peanut butter and jelly sandwich down dry!

Better git! I am on the brink of finding a monumental find for my Quantrill project and I am keeping my fingers crossed it hits! You all have a great and safe Monday and I'll see ya' later on!

John Masters

P.S. Maude, that breakfast was some kinda good I'm hear to tell ya'!

April 02, 2012 - Msg 88009: Happy Anniversary, ASA! Hope you have a wonderful day. Are you taking the missus out?

Hope your back is better, Maude. Are you having muscle spasms in it? You mentioned leg pain so I am wondering if a nerve might be getting pinched. You probably should have used ice on it in the beginning instead of heat, to reduce the inflammation. I pray it is better today. As most of us know, back pain is a misery!

Morning JM, good luck on the Qountrill find.

Chores to do!

One of those don't wanna do anything days but got to press on like everyone else. At least I don't have to clock in and be supervised by a boss. I can take breaks without someone looking over my shoulder.

Anyone want to have a cup of coffee with me? It's just plain Folger's but I have some cream and I can put in a dash of cinnamon. You know, the other day on the BIO channel they had a show on the Tate-Labianca murders in 1969. It was done based on eye witness testimony of one of the cult members who went free when she testified for the prosecution. One of the women who was in the Tate home and was stabbed to death was Abigail Folger, heir to the Folger's coffee fortune. Now, I can't help but think of her when I make coffee. I wonder what kind of life she would have had if she had lived. Very sad.

I saw on facebook that SPOT is enjoying his camping trip. Hope Miss Sherry is feeling well and enjoying herself.

April 03, 2012 - Msg 88039: Howdy, porch. Thanks for the kind words of concern, especially you, Me-They, for coming all the way over to the porch to check on me. That was very kind, and I appreciate it.

I'm fine. Joe and Jorge came this morning, and planted fifteen flats of flowers (I bought a few more), got my plumeria tree out of the garage and settled it into its place behind the main flower island, planted some esperanza plants in the boulder bed, and the yard looks beautiful. Just as the last little plants went in the ground, it began to rain, very gently. We hauled the trash to the front, Joe and Jorge left, and the rain fell a little harder. It kept that up for half an hour of so, and that was pretty much it. They did evacuate the school kids to a shelter and DFW airport shut down, but I guess I'm just right on the fringe of the bad stuff, because nothing has hit here but some much-needed rain. God is good.

My kids have been calling and emailing - guess they've been watching the news, which always reports the very worst and scares everyone out of their wits. I guess that's why I rarely even watch the news anymore. I'm so mad at NBC right now, for their blatant, "creative" editing of the 911 call in the Trayvon Martin shooting, that I doubt I'll ever watch them again. They just flat-out created a lie, and broadcast it as truth. Yellow journalism doesn't start it. Shame on them.

Well, guess I'll go stir up something to eat. Thanks again for your concern for my safety. It's nice to have friends who care. Prayers for all - especially Miss Sherry. --Romeena

Today was my husband's birthday. I made a carrot cake from the Pioneer Woman and there's lots left so come on over!

I have learned so much from TAGS. It's hard to choose! Don't play football near a prize rose. If you want to get boys interested in history then start a club. Make-up is called female war paint.

Neat website Boo. Thanks. I wanted to take the Mrs out for dinner for our anniverary, but she isn't feeling good these days, so we just stayed home. Why can't you color brown eggs Boo? Just not as vivid colors?

Rev, I wish we would get some rain. It's been as dry as the preachers sermons here. And this is supposed to be one of our wettest months. Oh well, the Lord has it figured out.

John Masters, You getting excited for your Cheifs? I know, the season is a long ways off, but it's still exciting to see the teams putting players together. I guess you and I can team up and heave tomatos at Manning and company this year. I like Manning a lot, but signing with them dreaded doncos has taken a lot of the luster off of him. LOL

Auh20, thanks for them kind words. Amy is doing great. We are so thankful. I guess a lady that goes to my Daughters church also got swine flu. She is elderly, and ended up in the hospital for a few days, but is home now. I hope that stuff ain't returning.

Guess I better get. My one and only co-worker suffered a heart attack a few weeks ago. They put a stent in him, and he's doing well, but still off work for a while. So I have been buried at work. Spring and Fall are always busy, but even worse now. But I am grateful for a job. No complaints.

Boo

April 05, 2012 - Msg 88061: Boo, brown eggs dye beautifully. I always buy some white and some brown, and dye both. Purple dye doesn't work too well on brown, but red is gorgeous, and so is green. Orange makes a very pretty color, yellow not so much. Just experiment a little. The dyes that make such pretty pastel colors on white eggs make completely different, rich, jewel-tones on brown ones. The very dark brown ones work best with the red dye, or you can just leave them undyed, as that rich brown color is pretty as it is.

Saw the back doc this morning, not really thrilled with what he told me, but we'll see after some more x-rays are done. Looks like surgery is coming, though not on my low back. He's more concerned about my neck. More later..

April 05, 2012 - Msg 88067: Me again - feeling better after a little nap. Boo, I just re-read what I wrote about the eggs, and need to clarify something. About the dark brown eggs - what I wrote sounds like red dye works better on the dark brown eggs than on the lighter ones, and that's not what I meant. I meant that of all the colors, red is best for the very dark brown ones, but the red dye works beautifully on all shades of brown. I usually buy the Paas egg dyes, I put the vinegar in the cups per instructions, and I usually put a teaspoon or two of vinegar in a large pot of water when I'm cooking the eggs. I've had people ask me where I got the "beautiful dyes" that made such vibrant colors, and they can hardly believe it when I tell them I started with brown eggs. I'm quite partial to brown eggs, because we always had them when I was a kid (my grandma liked Rhode Island Red hens and always had a few in the flock), as well as white eggs. They're all I buy now, and I buy only the "cage-free" eggs. They taste better to me. It may be just my imagination, but I don't care, I still like them best. The yolks in a brown egg tend to be a richer color, sometimes almost orange, and I just think they taste better.

It's a perfectly gorgeous day here, and it's one of my favorite times of day - getting along toward sunset, when the light is slanty and golden, and the shadows make such beautiful patterns everywhere. I just followed the shadow of a bushy-tailed little squirrel, as he ran along the top of the fence. I could see him too, but it was more fun to watch his shadow.

Well, the feeders are empty, so guess I'd better take care of that. The hummer feeder is still empty (and dirty!) and I saw my first hummer this week, so guess I'd better fill that up too. Although, any hummer that leaves this yard hungry because the feeder is empty, is just plain lazy.

Blessings! --Romeena

But doing a hernia repair may mean a bit more. But I'm sure she will do just fine. I'm sorry to read about your neck though. Have you been having problems with your neck? I hope and pray all will be well.

Possum, so good to see you. I miss you not being here so much. I hope you are doing ok.

Frankie, sure is nice seeing you here more. You're a great addition to the porch.

MDC, May it is huh? Good deal buddy. I'm pleased for you.

OK Boo, get them brown eggs colored. 93 huh? I hate to tell you this but I have snow on my porch this morning. A couple of inches is all, and more coming later. Dang, and I just put my snow blower to bed for the season. But it'll melt off quick. And boy do we need the moisture.

Spot, sure glad Miss Sherry had a good time buddy. I hope she continues to do well.

Auh2o, yer stumbling around Mayberry? You been hanging out with Otis? :)

Rev, you keeping the old larnyx lubed up good? You never know when you might need it.

Well better get. Lots to do today.

April 06, 2012 - Msg 88076: Prayers for Robbi.

I am going to try dying some brown eggs this weekend, Ro. I never even considered it working.

Got to take mom to the doctor today so better get going. Had one of those restless nights due to a "crick" in my neck. Don't you just hate those? Maybe I'll sneak a nap in later after the doc and some errands. Can you believe it was 97 degrees here yesterday?! A record breaker for early April.

April 06, 2012 - Msg 88078: OK, this is weird. You all watch out, I think the Count is hanging around somewhere. When I first got on the porch a few minutes ago, my own post #88068 was the last entry. That's why I asked where everyone was, #88077. When I mashed the "post" button, all the other comments appeared in between. Were you all hiding, to pop out and scare me, or what?

Lucy, I'm so sorry you're having so much trouble. Sometimes it seems like the more they mess with something, the worse it gets. We're praying for you, dear girl. Hang in there!

Yes, Asa, apparently there is a problem in my neck. I knew it was getting stiffer, and I find myself holding my head in an unusual position, sort of tilted down and to the left. Yesterday, the doctor told me he wanted to leave my low back alone, since it's feeling pretty good right now, but he's concerned about the neck thing. He sent me for x-rays, and by the time I got back to his office, he had the films. (They're very efficient in that office.) He looked me in the eye and said "you have absolutely horrible arthritis in your neck, and you have another problem that needs correction soon or you're going to permanently looking at the ground." He called it "swan neck syndrome" and showed me the films. It does really look weird, even I can see the deformity in the vertebrae. So, it appears I will be having neck surgery instead of lumbar, though that may come in time. Getting old really stinks at times. --Romeena

April 06, 2012 - Msg 88079: Good morning, Porch family!

Sorry I missed you yesterday, but I had soemthing strange happen with my computer. I got on the Porch and scrolled down to type and, for some odd reason (computers sure are odd), I could only scroll half of the screen. The screen just ended! It wouldnt go down to the window I could type in. Very weird! But...I am back this morning!

A beautiful morning on my side of the porch. Bit of a nip in the air, but a bright sun and the bluest sky!

Prayers for Robbi, Ro and Lucy! You know, folks....this "bad health" thing going around needs to go! I, myself, have a bad left ear. I flushed it a few days ago and it wont go back to normal. I dont know if water is trapped or what, but it sounds like I am breathing out of my ear. My balance is a bit off too!

Asa - Yeah, I really admired P. Manning and thought he was a good Joe. But then he completely snubbed visiting the Chiefs and now....he IS the enemy. I dont like your Raiders, Asa, but I loathe the Donkeys even worse! BELIEVE me....the fans in Kansas City are just chomping the bit until he walks into Arrowhead! Glad to hear little Amy is on the mend! Sounds like she'll be doing bad cartwheels, roller skating and jumping over oil pits in no time!

REV. - Asa'a right. Better give that larnyx a couple squirts!

SPOT - Good for you and Miss Sherry! Sounds like a great time was had by all! Good to hear MS got out and enjoyed the outdoors!

Boo - I'll take a couple of tye dyed eggs! Just leave them on the table with a large chocolate rabbit and some Reese's peanut butter eggs and I'll be good!

Y'all have a great and happy Good Friday! Be safe out there! Hey to auh2o,Mary,Maude,Possum,MDC,Frankie,and the whold gang!

Since it's the weekend, everyone drop by SONIC and get ya' a drink of your choice. It's on me! Pop, slush, whatever you prefer!

Spot.....man I am so glad to hear you all had a great time and Miss Sherry did great....that makes my day buddy!

Asa...don't worry, I'm keeping the ole larnyx sprayed up:)

John Masters.....I just stopped by sonic and asked for a cranberry slush and told them to put it on John Masters' tab....they looked at me as if I were crazy.....what's up with that?

It is nice and cool today here....Can't believe the change in just one day. High today 63 compared to upper 80's the last few days.

You all have a blessed Good Friday and a Jesus filled Easter weekend.
Remember...Jesus loves you....You need proof?....well just look up the true meaning of Easter and that will give you the proof:)

April 07, 2012 - Msg 88096: update --Romeena

April 07, 2012 - Msg 88097: Well, it seems the spooky things are still going on around here. I notified Floyd, so maybe he can come and shoo the Count away.

Another absolutely gorgeous day here in north Texas. One of those days where there are just enough fluffy white clouds to make the sky seem even bluer, and a gentle breeze is playing tag with the trees. Some fresh clumps of iris have opened - this is why I plant early, mid-season and late bloomers - and they're so pretty. One group is pretty little Grapette. It's an intermediate, not as big and flashy as the Tall Bearded variety, but still so pretty in their own right. The purple and white blooms are smaller, and they don't carry as many blooms on each stalk, but the fragrance is just delightful. They smell like grape candy, and in the late afternoon, after the warm sun has been on them all day, the fragrance is all around them. You can smell them from several feet away. The clump has multiplied and spread generously since it was first planted about three years ago, but I'm not going to divide it this year. I want it to get really big and well established before I do that. Then, I can share with my girls and friends without risking depleting my own.

Well, a hummer has come to the feeder, found it empty, and hovered in front of my window, looking in at me as if to say, "Hey, lady! We need some groceries out here!" Lazy little bird - with a yard full of flowers, he's whining about an empty feeder? Oh well. Guess I'll go fill it, and put out some critter feed as well. They have cleaned out the feeder and practically vacuumed the stones. I love feeding them, they're so much fun to watch.

Also got to go get my Easter eggs colored. I cooked them last night, but was too tired to stay up and color them. I knew my back wouldn't take it, so I chose the path of wisdom and went to bed. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

April 07, 2012 - Msg 88098: I'm glad you are having nice weather, Ro. It is already too hot here and the humidity is bad, too. I am afraid of what summer will bring.

I am cooking away today to get ready for tomorrow. I finished some coleslaw and am working on some red skinned potato salad. Traditionally everyone down here makes the kind of potato salad you make with russets, mayo, mustard, relish, eggs. I decided to do something different this year. Hope nobody is too dissapointed.

Better go check on the potatoes I have boiling, then I will go to work on a berry pie. I am going to attempt to actually make my own pie crust, which might not turn out so well...

Boo

April 07, 2012 - Msg 88099: --Romeena

April 07, 2012 - Msg 88100: Hey, Boo. I'll bet your pie turns out great. It has been several years since I made a pie crust from scratch. Used to do it all the time, back when the "store-bought" ones tasted like cardboard, but these days, they're not bad at all, and I appreciate the convenience. As for the potato salad, the one you described is the most popular here as well, but we do make the red potato, skin-on kind as well, and I love it!

I wish I was making an Easter meal, but have to work tonight, unless I get lucky and get canceled. There's a pretty good chance, but I can't count on it. Won't know until after five. So - Eloise is doing tomorrow's dinner. She likes to do it, and since she has more kids here than I do, I yield to her majority. David is my only one here, and since his wife is Eloise's daughter, they kind of cancel each other in the head count. It's fine with me. She's a great cook, and I have to work half the time anyway, so it works out fine. She won't even let me be respoonsible for any of the food, since I really won't have time to cook if I have to work. So, I'll take a basket of pretty Easter eggs, and a big bouquet of irises, with maybe a rose or two thrown in for good measure. Depends on what opens in the morning. Still a little early for roses.

Well, got to go dip out the current batch of eggs, and put more in. They're coloring beautifully. That red dye over a brown egg is just gorgeous! --Romeena

April 07, 2012 - Msg 88101: Sorry you have to work, Ro, but glad you will be eating with Eloise and family tomorrow. I really enjoyed cooking today...just not the clean up. I try to clean as I go, as you have suggested before, but even at that there is just so much! I am really blessed with this big kitchen, though...makes things alot easier. I do alot of walking from here to there but for the most part it is not bad. The pantry is way on the other side of the kitchen, though, near the laundry room. Not far but sometimes and inconvenience. I had to try to cook a meal at St. Susan's not long ago and she has one of those small galley kitchens with little counter space. I thought I was going to go bonkers. I kept going around in circles with things in my hand that I couldn't find a place to put down!

Well, think I will go round up something to eat. I put a roast in the crock pot but it won't be ready for a couple of hours and I am famished.

I think I will go boil a few of my brown eggs and try coloring them.

April 07, 2012 - Msg 88105: I saw you, Tom. Sorry I didn't respond. Sounds like you're having your challenges with your stepdad. I know it's hard for you, but for his sake, I'm glad he has you to look after him. I pray for you all the time, that your life will become easier.

Guess what? The happy call came from the hospital and I didn't have to go to work tonight. That means I can sleep tonight, can go to church in the morning, and have a normal day with the family, not all tired and sleepy. God is good!

Boo, how did your brown eggs turn out? I'll bet they're pretty. One of mine is especially pretty, a bit unusual. It was a very light brown egg, with a hint of pink in it, so I just did a quick dip in the pink dye and it turned out a lovely rosy-beige, really pretty. With the brown ones, a little imagination and trial and error over the years goes a long way.

I had planned to bathe Toye Starr, but I think I may skip it. She'll be happy, that's for sure. I had to comb and brush her out before the bath, because while little mats are bad enough, when they get wet they get impossible, so I always comb her out completely before a bath. I have a de-tangling spray that goes on dry hair and makes it comb out easy. Well, when I finished that, she looks so pretty and fluffy and smells so baby-powder sweet, that I think I'll just wash her face and her little hiney and let it go at that. She hates a bath, and I'm tired, so maybe we'll just skip it for tonight, and go to bed early for a change.

Got to go put my little white cross out in the front yard before I go to bed. It says "He Is Risen!" across the front of it. Have a blessed Easter, folks. Remember, just as the Baby is no longer in the manger, the Crucified Christ is no longer on the cross, and the Risen Christ is no longer in the tomb. He rose from the dead, and ascended to heaven, and waits for us there. Isn't that wonderful? --Romeena
