April 13, 2012 - Msg 88203: I'm glad you wrote a "book" Mary Wiggins. You don't come and chat nearly enough but great to see you when you do. That is a bad situation with your friend. I will certainly say a prayer for him tonight. So many times I think about how blessed I am to have a good man. God was good to me when he sent me Bruce. So many people I know suffer in bad relationships with just plain selfish or mean people.

Well, Bruce took us out for Mexican food tonight and it was unbelievably good. Wow...must be because I have been on this diet for so long! I know its ok to splurge once in ahwile (seldom for me, though).

I had better get off this thing and think about hitting the ironing board. Plenty to do tomorrow. Goodnight Mayberry!

April 13, 2012 - Msg 88204: Hey, porch. Bunco went well. I even came out $1 ahead. We put $6 in the "kitty" when we arrive. At the end of the game, that's broken down, with different amounts going to the winners in different categories. I won $9, gave $2 back to go into the flower fund, so came home with $7, after an ante of $6. $1 profit! Whooee! High finance!

Mary Wiggins, I'm so glad your friend called that wedding off. He was headed for deep, serious trouble there. The girlfriend wouldn't "let" him take the lazy son's car back? Wow. You're right, of course, that the woman is going to try to regain what she's lost. Your friend had better watch out for the honey that she'll be dripping all over the place from now on, trying to lure him back. Danger, danger, danger! You and your family stay close to him right now, and give him a lot of positive reinforcement. It's easy to see what was happening there. Late 50s, knows he'll likely never have his own family, but here was a chance for kids and grandkids for his later years. Truth is, the woman is a spider, would have taken him for every dime and made his life miserable, and with the ins@rance thing coming up, it's not inconceivable that he could have met an untimely end in some way. It happens.

I think I'm going to hit the old ironin' board myself. Toye Starr wants to cuddle - was very insulted that I left her alone tonight. She is the most loving little thing. Sure does fill up the lonely spots in this big old house. I'm convinced that God made her just for me, and Sugarplum had the right to final approval. God is good.

Blessings! --Romeena

April 14, 2012 - Msg 88206: Good Morning Porch.
Spot, I'm sorry it was a rough week for Miss Sherry. I pray the weekend will find it a better time for you both, and that you may feel the loving arms of God embrace you both in His loving care.

Mary Wiggins, my goodness, I was shuddering as I was reading your post. It's amazing I suppose how blind we can become when loneliness exists. I'm sure glad he got out of that situation and pray that he can resist the efforts she will undoubtedly employ to woo him back. There are a number of good verses of scripture in Proverbs you could direct him too, if he's a Bible believing man.

Romeena, you high roller you! :) I hope and pray your back and neck issues will improve. When are you having the neck surgery? Just be happy your not a giraffe. Not only would you be selfish, it would be major surgery.

Well Boo, it's Saturday. I'll have G-F pick you and Bruce up and take you to Myers lake. G-F, you make sure everythings perfect for them.

John Masters, what's your thoughts on Crennell? I think he's a great D.C. but he didn't impress me much as an H.C. with the Browns. Maybe the second time around will be a charm. I wish you the best... well with the exception of two games each year hee hee hee, maybe three if we both sneak into the play-offs.

Well better get rolling. Lots to do today. I'm not certain the weather will cooperate. W

April 14, 2012 - Msg 88207: Whoops, fat fingers hit the wrong key. Just as well. I'm done anyway.
Prayers for all.

April 14, 2012 - Msg 88208: Mary Wiggins....Tell your friend...."RUN FORREST RUN"!! Get a dog it will be a better companion.
Boo, your post saying you will not put up with mean animals, right away made me think if of the scene from "Cold Mountain" where Rene Zelwagagger's character wacks the mean chicken with-out even blinking an eye while talking to Nichole Kidman..funny scene!
Romeena...High finances$$ Just be careful so you don't turn out like Howard Sprague's Father with a gambling habit!..haha...off to the Saturday Flea Mkt.to look for treasures...But wait, I already did! You are all TREASURES!...G-F

April 14, 2012 - Msg 88209: Asa, Romeo, Romeo, where art thou Romeo Crennel? The Browns did not do much better with out him. I agree he's a better D-C the players liked him alot tho. so John Masters...good luck and by the way, Indians 7 runs in the 1st Inning againt KC last night? what's up with that? Did KC put the local Little League team in the 1st inning? haha.
Also Asa, I'm incharge of holding down the Funny Farm" today @ Boo's, not being the driver I think Gilley Walker was asigned that one! Check back later if things don't go right, I think Boo will be having a BBQ chicken party later...G-F

Enjoy your gift of Saturday, Boo. Just call if you need someone to bring $5.00 for the license.
Prayers for Sherry, sorry she's having a bad week.

Morning Porch

Spot- As always buddy, Prayers for Miss Sherry and you!

Rev- I saw a church sign yesterday that said, "Pray hardest when it's hardest to pray." That really hit home here and it touched my soul. Some days lately, when praying, I just can't find the words but I'm comforted that Jesus knows.

Peace friends,
auh2o

April 14, 2012 - Msg 88212: Don't worry, Hazel. I would NEVER pull and snap your head! :)

Well, I'm still here waiting for Gilley Walker to pick me up...

Boo

April 14, 2012 - Msg 88213: Hey there Auh2o...sorry you are going through some tough times (still). Bless your heart. You keep on praying because God is still answering prayer. Love to you and your's.

April 14, 2012 - Msg 88214: Something is still wonky on the porch. I did the "refresh" thing when I walked in, but it's not all here. Somebody has stolen the posts between 88104 and 88203, at least they're not available to me. Very, very strange. I checked the archives and everything. Can anyone else see them?

Hazel, I'm sorry you're having some challenges, and will be praying that they resolve soon. auh2o, I will pray for you as well. You folks are too nice to be dealing with problems. Some of the best advice I ever heard was "Pray like it all depends on God, and work like it all depends on you."

Spot, I'm glad you're enjoying the flowers, and would love to see a picture. Can you email one to me? Sorry Miss Sherry is having a bad week, but since it's a chemo week, I guess it's no surprise. How many more rounds are planned?

Well, my irises are about finished. There are a few stands that are still blooming, and two or three that are just now budding (I planned that) but the majority of them are through. Now the roses are coming on, and they're gorgeous. The little "Angel Face" bushes we planted last year along the back wall of the main island, are just blooming their little heads off. I do so love that little rose, and I think of Sugarplum every time I look at them.

Well, I need to go feed my little canine companion, I just stopped off here on my way to the kitchen this morning. We stayed up late, and slept late. You can do that when you get old enough and don't have anyone else to answer to. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

April 14, 2012 - Msg 88215: Ro, I forgot to tell you that I rented a cabin on the Frio for wed and thursday. Yippee! Hope I don't freeze to death. With all the rain they are expecting for this weekend, the river should really be flowing and hopefully we will be tubing. I am really looking forward to a little vacation with just Bruce, the kids and me. I will have to do some cooking but other than that should be a breeze (expect for the getting ready to go). Its one of those places where you have to bring your own linens and food and such but the kitchen utensils are provided. There is a bbq grill and a fire pit on the patio out front so will be having some campfires, roasting some marshmallows and telling "The Golden Arm," for sure.

Wonder if Floyd is working on it there? Anyway, I felt like Barney hunting for choir practice - next time you folks move, kindly let a person know!

Really, Boo? You're going to the Frio? Wow. Can I come too? You just don't know how much I love tubing on that beautiful river. Haven't done it in a long time, but it was always my favorite vacation. I'd rather do that than go to Las Vegas or anywhere else.

Well, guess I'm off to the ironing board. Preaching is at 8:15 (groan) and it's past midnight now. I'll have to sleep really fast, I guess. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

April 15, 2012 - Msg 88219: OK, this is weird. After I left the porch on Internet Explorer, I came back to Firefox to try once more. Oh well, all's well that ends well. Now I really am going to bed. --Romeena

Asa, I just did some reading about Robin Gibbs. If he passes, there will only be one brother left, I think. Two of the others died young and Robin is only 62.

It is sure is windy here in south texas. Can't even go outside without getting your hair blown into a mess. Hate when that happens on sunday morning...maybe I need a wig like aunt bee...that thing looked like it was held together with epoxy or something.

Romeena, how is your back?
Auh20 and Hazel, praying that things get better soon!

April 15, 2012 - Msg 88229: Hope everyone had an enjoyable week-end. I went to my grandsons T-Ball opening day on Saturday and spent this afternoon looking for new shoes. Who the heck is designing shoes for women, I don't need a pair heels that are five and six inches high. Ladies have you noticed how ugly the shoes are now or is it just me? April 16, 2012 - Msg 88231: Personally, I haven't worn high heels in nearly twenty years. When I sustained my third sprained ankle just before Thanksgiving in '92 (I think) my dear Dale went to my closet, gathered up every high-heeled shoe I owned and took them to the Salvation Army. Funny part was, I was wearing sneakers when I sprained the ankle! Still, when the ankle got better and I started to wear heels to church, he insisted I change them, and got rid of all my heels. Secretly, I didn't care, and haven't missed them one bit. They're really ridiculous, if you think about it. Why on earth do women think their feet and legs are designed to walk on tiptoe? Oh well, it keeps the foot surgeons in business. My poor mother wore heels every day, and had bunions, calluses, hammertoes and her little feet were almost crippled by the time she passed away. Dale rescued me just in time. My feet are great, no problems at all except for an ingrown toenail, which I'm about to get fixed. Heels? Who needs 'em? And yes, the current styles are ugly. Big clunky platforms, dagger heels - ugly! So was the previous fad, the pointy-toed witchy-poo shoes. Ugly, ugly!

Well, next time I'll tell you how I really feel. (haha) Now I'm going to go watch Hyacinth Bucket (it's Boo-kay!) She cracks me up. --Romeena

April 16, 2012 - Msg 88240: Romeena, it seems like high heels are a thing of the past down here. Rarely ever see them. What the women wear here are sandals...LOTS of fancy, beaded flip-flops, especially. Some of them are platforms but nothing that puts a strain on the foot. I stopped wearing heels somewhere in the 90's and I NEVER wear nylons, nor does anyone else I know. Yay! It is just too darned hot and humid here for that nonsense. I can remember the days when to go to church you had to put on a slip under your dress and wear pantyhose and heals. Glad that is over. I don't even think you can buy slips anymore in the department store.

Boo

April 16, 2012 - Msg 88241: Oh yeah, Boo, I remember that. My mom had to almost physically fight with me to get me into my first pair of nylons. I was twelve, and pantyhose hadn't been invented yet, so we're talking about a garter belt and single-leg nylons. Talk about uncomfortable! I absolutely hated the whole idea. I was a tomboy from the git-go, much more comfortable in denim cutoffs, on a horse's back. Still, in the final argument, my mom won, of course, and I wore the hated things to church. These days, up here in the Dallas area, young women still wear those torture devices called "heels" and ruin their feet and legs, but most women over forty or fifty have abandoned them some time back. I think I still have some L'Eggs knee-hi nylons in a drawer somewhere, to wear with dressy slacks, but mostly I wear trouser socks with them, because I usually wear loafers with slacks. Sneakers with jeans, loafers with slacks. For very dressy, I have some sandals with 1 1/2 inch heels, and I just make sure I have a nice pedicure and forget any kind of hosiery. As for the jeweled sandals, I have them too. I order them from a place called ShoptheDocks.com - big selection and decent prices. I guess you could say that comfort is the keyword around here.

Yes, what IS up with all this crazy weather? Makes one wonder if we really are living in the last days - certainly the Bible speaks of disturbances in the weather at that time. Personally, I'm ready, and I pray everyone else is too.

Well, gotta work tonight, so guess I'd better run along. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

Asa, I am sure most normal men like to look at legs and feet in high heels but if they had to wear them, they wouldn't like them much...or some would, I guess (there are those unusual types who go for that sort of thing). I went to a boutique in Houston once with a friend and I think they specialized in men's high heels. You should have seen the size of those things!

Enough of that subject. Lucy, I don't like the jinx ep, either. I always feel so sorry for that guy. No, he isn't the goat owner in the loaded goat episode.

Frankie, you don't like flip-flops and tennis shoes? Reminds me of an old joke: A man goes to a shrink for help with a problem. The shrink has him lie on the couch and begins asking the usual questions: "Well, Mr. Smith, what brings you here today?" Mr Smith says, "Doc I have a problem. I like shoes better than I like boots". "Well, that doesn't sound like a real problem. Many people prefer shoes to boots. In fact, I myself, prefer shoes to boots," replied the shrink. "What a relief," said the patient! "How do you prefer them?..fried or scrambled?".....

Better get out of here before someone throw a mater at me...

April 17, 2012 - Msg 88265: Good afternoon, porch! MDC, and anyone else who is having porch glitch problems - I found out you don't have to do the "test" entry. Just scroll down to the bottom, which will usually be your own last entry, and hit the "refresh" button - that little circular arrow up on the top. Everything will pop into place and you're up to date. I do hope that technique isn't giving Floyd a problem, though. I remember him mentioning a while back that popping in and out raises the cost of running the site - something about a charge for each entry or something like that, and a "refresh" would probably count as a re-entry. Am I right, Floyd?

G-F, I guess it would be sad when your boxers get in a bunch, but it wouldn't hold a candle to getting your pantyhose in a twist, thereby cutting off the circulation to at least one of your legs, or falling off your high heels, which mangles an ankle. Let's hope you never experience those things! Let's reeeaaallly hope that you don't!

REV, that's just terrible about your pastor friend's mom. I can't think of much that would be more horrible than that. I can only pray that the smoke got to her before the fire did. That poor woman, and her poor family. God bless them!

That miserable bird is back, in my back yard. I'd like to jerk a knot in his neck. He has apparently decided that my plastic snakes aren't a threat, because he just calmly stepped over one of them. He was about to position himself to strike, when I stood up and banged on the window and scared him away. Don't know why my bird-sprayer didn't fire, but it didn't. I wonder if Eddie turned it off when he mowed and didn't turn it back on? Guess I'd better check.

Well, gotta get ready to go to the fish fry at church. Should be really good, it always is. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Funny and true panty hose story. My friend had worn panty hose under her jeans and when she took them off to go to bed they somehow got stuck in the jeans. She had to get to the grocery store early the next and put the same jeans back on. Once she got to the store she noticed a man following her and finally he went up to her and said miss you have something dragging behind you. She looked down and saw the entire pantry hose leg dragging behind her out the leg of her jeans. She reached down and tried to pull the hose out and ended up tripping herself falling into the jelly shelf and making a big mess. She left the store and wouldn't go back to that store for years. April 17, 2012 - Msg 88272: What sides, Frankie? The usual - slaw, fries, hush puppies, and my favorite - green tomato relish. I don't treat it like a relish, I get a big old helping of it and eat it like a vegetable. A bite of fish, a bite of relish, bite of fish, bite of relish, and it all gets kind of mixed up and the flavors are just wonderful! I don't even know of the Yanks have green tomato relish, or if they do, how they make it, but southern-style, the 'maters are left in pretty good sized chunks (I would call it "rough-chop"), and there's some bits of onion in there too, and it's all in a sort of sweet/slightly tart pickling brine, and it's wonderful. Oh - very funny pantyhose story. That poor girl!

Well, I'm a pooped pup. Worked last night, slept about an hour and a half this morning, then up and at 'em for the rest of the day. I think I'll start hunting the ironing board pretty soon. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Thanks for the story, PH.

Well, we are off to the Frio river this morning. Please remember us in your prayers. The river is running pretty fast right now. Sean will have his laptop and there is wifi at our cabin so I will check in with you all when I get a chance.

April 18, 2012 - Msg 88277: Good morning, porch! I am so envious of Boo and her family, going to the Frio river. Folks, that's the most beautiful river, and I spent many happy childhood hours playing along its banks, and swimming in the cold, cold water. Lots of good times there as an adult, too, feeling like a kid again. It's spring-fed, not only at the headwaters, but there are springs along along the length of it, so it stays cold and fresh. It does get very low when there isn't enough rain and the springs quit running, but as soon as it rains in the hills, within hours the river is roaring again. My family and I have tubed that river when we had to get up and walk most of the way, with water just barely above our ankles, and we have ridden it when it was at least twelve feet over normal, muddy and roaring over boulders as big as a car, that had been high and dry the day before. I got thrown out of my tube on one of those rides, and was in very real danger of drowning. I'm not a strong swimmer, and it wouldn't have mattered if I was, the current was so wild, just pitching and roaring. No one wore flotation vests in those days, the tube was your only hope, and mine had sailed away the minute I got thrown off of it. Dale, on his big old tractor tire innertube, saw me as the water carried him past where I was fighting to stay at the surface, reached his strong hand down, grabbed mine and hauled me up onto his tube. I coughed and choked for a while, but I was safe with him. We caught up with my tube downstream a way, where it had snagged on a partially-submerged tree, and I climbed back on! We made that run three times that day, a ride that usually took nearly three hours, but that day we were making it in twenty minutes. Dangerous definitely, stupid probably, but boy, did we have fun!

What an amazing, beautiful day! It's only 62, there's a brisk little breeze blowing but the skies are corn-flower blue and perfectly clear. Everything is in full leaf by now, though some things are still that fresh, pale green that makes such a pretty contrast to the evergreens and the things where the leaves are more mature. Another fresh stand of iris has decided to open, a bright, electric blue one that's just gorgeous. The Japanese iris behind the pond is in full bloom as well, and is so pretty. Its bloom habit is different from our standard irises - the foliage is longer, more slender, and the blooms arise sort of nestled down in the foliage, rather than standing above it. It's best observed up close, where you can really see the flowers. I went back there to enjoy them a little yesterday, and discovered that a white clematis I had forgotten about is also blooming, just running all around in the iris. I think this morning I'll see if I can bring some of it forward and let it trail over the fountain rock so it will be more visible from my window. The blooms are huge, at least six inches across, and snow white. Spectacular! In the rose island, there is a lemon-yellow rose in bloom that's just lovely, and nearby, a peach-colored one has covered itself in fluffy blooms. Right next to it, last year I planted a peach-colored iris, hoping they'd bloom in tandem, and they have! The iris is just a shade or two darker than the rose, and has a white center plane on the falls that makes a beautiful accent. The two, so close and viewed together, are just beautiful. I think I need to get a picture of that.

Well, off I go. The yard calls. There are at least two dozen butterflies out there, my hummer has been busy at the feeder near my window, mama and papa cardinal are darting in and out of the ligustrum shrub (gotta be feeding babies!) and a very bossy, sassy mockingbird is trying to supervise everything and everybody. He perches on the cable line near the house, on his incredibly skinny little legs, sets his tail at its usual jaunty angle, and sings his little heart out. I love him! --Romeena

April 18, 2012 - Msg 88286: Oyster sandwiches? Fried oysters, I presume? Hmmm. Never tried such as that, but I do like fried oysters - might be pretty tasty. Not a typical Texas dish, would probably have to make it myself. Let's see, this month does have an "R" in it, so I suppose oysters can be found in the stores. Very interesting.

Just got my gas bill for the past month. It was $111. Last month was $23. Something is wrong, so I called Atmos and they're sending a man out to do a re-read tomorrow. That's nearly four times as much, and the weather is getting warmer, not colder, so there's no reason for the gas bill to be more than it was in a colder month. I hope there's not a leak somewhere, but I haven't smelled gas, so I guess not. If you all see me and Toye Starr flying by with our tails on fire, you'll know I was mistaken.

Still a very pretty day out there, almost as pretty as it was this morning. Guess I'll turn in early tonight - have to be at the hospital at 7 in the morning for a unit conference. Yay. --Romeena

Yep, Frankie, I've eaten crab cakes, and I like 'em, usually. Depends on who made them, I guess. I've enjoyed some more than others. There's a seafood place here that makes them, but they put waaaay too much sage in them. They taste like over-saged turkey dressing, with just a hint of crab. Not too good. Then there's another place that serves them, and they're pretty good. Mostly, I prefer crab legs to crab cakes, but if they're done right, they're okay.

Well, TAGS is on TVLand right now, guess I'll go watch it. I like to support the stations that still show it, and try to at least have the TV on, just in case they're surveying or something. "Support Your Local Sheriff", I suppose. --Romeena
