December 24, 2012 - Msg 91680: Good Christmas eve porchters.
If I may, I'd like to share with you something I've experienced the last couple of days that has really touched me.
One of the victims in that terrible shooting last week was a 6 year old girl, Emille Parker. She was born right close to where I live. The family had moved to Conneticut not long ago for reasons of employment. The family decided to bury her back here in Utah. Friday there was a public gathering for her at a local High School where her parents first met years ago. The outpouring of love was beyond anything I could have imagined. The entire town of Ogden Utah was adorned with pink ribbons (her favorite color) and pink banners. It has been truely touching to see how the entire community has rallied around the Parker family. But what is even more touching to me has been to listen to the foregiving nature of the family. They obviously have great sadness for there loss, but have said how they don't hate the individual who did it, and in fact feel bad for the shooters family. I try to put myself in their position, and I know my thoughts would be quite different. Their faith and foregiving nature has been an insperation for me. I didn't know them prior to this horrible event, but feel like I know them well now. My prayers are with them, and all the families affected by this horrible event. I hope and pray that all of them, and all of us, can find the kind of foregiving nature demonstrated by the Parker family.

December 24, 2012 - Msg 91683: Hi, porch. Asa, thanks so much for sharing that. It makes me feel better about that child's family, to know that they're not dealing with hatred on top of everything else. They have chosen the better way. I can only hope I would do the same, but like you, I'm not sure I could. To forgive the person who willfully murdered my child - I just don't know. I think in this case I would have to latch onto the fact that the shooter had mental problems, and therefore might not have been responsible for what he did. That thought might provide my only path to reach the point of forgiveness. As for the shooter's family, I have some reservations there, too. The man's mother knew his situation and his tendencies, and yet she chose to keep a house full of guns, and let him indulge in posters about guns and such. Why would she do that? The father was absent, and evidently just threw money at the problem and chose not to be personally involved. It's also sadly true that society has failed people with mental problems. As I heard one expert expounding on the subject - we have "deconstructed" our mental health assistance system, and once a child reaches age 18, what remains of the system is done with them, and they're on their own. This is not acceptable. I don't profess to have answers, but I do know that what we have now isn't working.

I cannot imagine how those families managed to return home to a Christmas tree, with gifts tagged for those children beneath it. How on earth would you deal with that? The immediate shock of the child's death, and the immediate attention to arrangements is bad enough. Then come the little, day to day details, that must be dealt with. It took me three years to give Dale's clothes away, and I still have some of them. What do you do with a little boy's bicycle, or a little girl's favorite party dress? How do you deal with a grieving pet? What do you do with their bedroom? Good God in heaven. How do they get through it? I pray every day that God will hold and support them, and give them some measure of comfort. In my heart, I know that forgiveness is a giant step along the road to peace, but I'm still not sure I could do it. God forgive me!

Tonight, I'm going to bask in the presence of my son and DIL, and my two grandsons, and thank God every step of the way. I will sincerely, and deeply, thank God. --Romeena

December 24, 2012 - Msg 91685: Reading your post just reminded me of something, Ro, and I'm so glad it did. Several weeks ago, I brought home the pj bottoms of my dad's favorite old pjs. Mom had mentioned them and took some comfort in trying to wear the top but it was just too big. I had intended to make a little pillow for her out of some of the fabric from the bottoms and forgot. I will do that this afternoon and I think it will be just the thing for her to cuddle with when she goes to bed tonight. Thanks. :) You know, Ro, you are right...that kind of forgiveness you talked about is impossible without the Lord. I have no doubt, that in time, the Lord would give you the grace and power to do it if you ever faced such a thing. You are his child and He has given you everything you need already to live a life of forgivness and godliness...sometimes we just have to have time to work through things. PS-I am very thankful that you are my friend and I am able to share your life and wisdom through this wonderful porch. LOVE to you this Christmas Eve.

December 24, 2012 - Msg 91687: Almost forgot that I wanted to share something with you that happened on Sunday. Months ago, I asked prayer for a young man with Down's Syndrome who comes to our church with his parents from time to time. They are from out of town but come down to visit relatives and attend the church when they are here. Justen is the sweetest, happiest young man, in his 20's and just a joy to everyone. Justen was diagnosed with Lymphoma months back and had to go through some tough chemotherapy. Well, he was in church yesterday morning...with a sparse head of hair and dark circles under his eyes, but the biggest smile and great joy at seeing his church friends. I couldn't wait to give him a hug and talk to him about Christmas for a minute. Not even the threat of death itself, could dampen that boy's smile and joy at life. What a blessing he is to everyone who knows him. Such a precious soul, and surely no "mistake" on God's part.

Better start making a pillow...

December 24, 2012 - Msg 91692: I received Ro and SPOT's cards in the mail today. :) Very sweet cards.

Well, everything is ready for the evening and I am about to leave for our Christmas Eve service at church. We didn't go last year so I am really looking forward to it this year! It is a tradition that I never want to miss again. After that, we will go to St. Susan's house and exchange a few gifts with her family. We will eat there and then just enjoy some family time together. I am looking forward to being with my mom this evening. My christmas angel this year has been Bruce's older brother, who is spending time with mom-in-law tonight and tomorrow so that we can have our first Christmas without dad to ourselves with just my family. It will be a smaller gathering this year, and more peaceful. Tomorrow morning, we will open our gifts here at home, just Bruce, Sean, Erin and I and have a leisurely breakfast before I begin preparing for Christmas dinner. I will be roasting a turkey and cooking a ham with sweet ham gravy, and the trimmings.

Well..better be off...will try to check back in on the porch later tonight.

Love,
Boo

December 25, 2012 - Msg 91721: Well, it's not 10:30pm, the guests have gone, the kitchen is almost clean but I am leaving some dishes for tomorrow! It was a nice Christmas day and the food was goo-ood! Mom seem to do well without Dad. She ate a big plateful, which is unusual for her. It was 80 degrees until this evening and now it is about 40...this crazy Texas weather...80 one minute, 40 degrees colder the next.

St. Susan and I went looking at some Christmas lights tonight and it was really enjoyable visiting and sharing some Christmas memories. We drove by the house of my late Uncle Wyatt and his wife, Aunt Della. We spent many Christmas days there, eating Aunt Dellas dressing...she was a great cook. I miss them both.

I got a Christmas surprise today that made me cry. My brother Dave in California called and told me that he and his wife will be coming down in March! They always came in March to see Dad and I thought that now that Dad was gone, I wouldn't seem Dave for a long time. He informed me that he intends to come every spring, just as always. It made my day. :)

Well, I think I will go watch the TAGS christmas ep with Erin...I have not watched it yet this year.

PS-I will be at O'Malley's for sure. I'll bring some snacks and some sparklers. I wonder if O'malley has any potted plants, in case Homemaker brings her meatballs?

December 26, 2012 - Msg 91722: Good evening, porch! Just got home from spending the day at Eloise's. Great meal, good snacks, and warm fellowship. Now, here's the news:

WE HAVE SNOW!!! Yep, it started snowing today around 1 pm, with the air temp nearly 40°. "Aw, it'll never stick!" That's what we all said, then the temperature started to drop like a rock, got to about 28°, and sure enough, the snow started to stick! Cars were covered, windows frozen over, and when I got home just now, my back yard is all solid white! So pretty. It's supposed to warm up to about 50° tomorrow, so it will be gone soon, but it's pretty right now. David started my car for me and left the defrosters running, so when I got ready to leave, the car was warm and the windshields were clear. The streets were clear too, at least the way I came home. I avoided the highway, because the bridges were sure to be icy. The road I took parallels the highway, and just has two lights. Much safer.

Dave and Brittney always come up with something very creative for Eloise and me, and this year they gave us each a "four-pack" of tickets to the Dallas Summer Musicals. I absolutely love stage plays, and we'll get to see four great productions. I forget what they all are, but one is "The Lion King." One year they gave us tickets to see the performance of the Lipizzaner stallions at the coliseum in Waco. We drove down there, had lunch, then saw the performance and came home! That was nine days after Eloise had knee replacement surgery, and she, being the trooper that she is, just went right on, walker and all! We had a great time.

We had fun today. Eloise's other daughter and her family were there, including the two-year-old great=granddaughter. That kid is a pistol! I said she needs a t-shirt with a rattlesnake picture on it, and a caption that reads, "Don't tread on me!" She has a mind of her own. Beautiful, smart, and very determined. She leads her mama a merry chase!

Boo, that's great that your brother will still be coming to visit in the spring. I'm sure you'll enjoy that a lot. Siblings need to stick together!

Well, I think I'll get a couple of cookies and a glass of buttermilk, and watch a little TV. Maybe I'll watch the TAGS Christmas ep too. Let's just enjoy it together! --Romeena

December 26, 2012 - Msg 91724: Yep, SPOT you are right, a mess of bad weather is on they way, tough job keeping the lights on for the next couple of days. We are looking at 10 to 12" by tomorrow, so auh20 it's on it's way, more than that for you guys! REV alot of rain and storms for you. I think this is Mother Nature's late Christmas gift. I think I'll hunker down since I'm off work till after New Years.

Romeena, We took a group of Seniors to Toronto a few years back and saw the Lion King, We had second row center seats. It was AWSOME to see the expressions on their faces. Then we took them to a Casino, it was amazing to see, It was like Jesus put a healing on those folks as they got off the bus. It was kinda like they were "spring chickens" again!
(Maybe they were given some "Colonel Harveys" elixer on the bus, that's what I'm thinking).
Come to think of it, if I remember correctly I do recall some "To To, Tootsie To,To's comming from the back of the bus.

December 26, 2012 - Msg 91728: Brrrr! It's cold out there! 24° here in the Dallas area. That's cold, dang cold! Our snow is holding up, but the sun is out and it will warm up soon, so the snow will disappear. It's not even solid coverage, there's grass poking up through it, but it's still pretty. My grandsons were having a wonderful time last night, over at Eloise's. They kept going outside, staying about ten minutes, then coming in to get warm. Of course they didn't have appropriate clothing - kids around here don't have heavy snow gear - so they were in their jackets, gloves borrowed from Eloise, and baseball caps. So about every ten minutes, they'd come blowing back in, powdery snow flying everywhere, leaving wet tracks, and they'd plop down beside me on the couch, cold just flowing off them, and try to snuggle to get warm. In a few minutes, off they'd go again, back outside, leaving me cold and slightly damp, to repeat the cycle all over again. Boys - ya gotta love 'em!

G-F, you crack me up! His "Amen-ities?" That's funny! Seriously, you gotta wonder what gets into somebody like that? Oh, a psychologist could probably come up with a list of possible reasons for such behavior. I probably could too, we all could, but reasons or not, there's still no excuse for such as that. Lots of people have bad things happen to them, or don't get enough love, or whatever. That's sad, and I wish it were different. But as someone once said, it's not what happens to you in life that matters, it's how you react to it that counts. Most of us have that "filter" that tells us that certain behaviors are not acceptable, no matter what the reason. It's called "conscience". So, even if that young man had his "reasons", that's no excuse for doing what he did. There, I've said it and I ain't takin' it back!

Well, TAGS will be on MeTV in a few minutes, so guess I'll go watch it. "I Love Lucy" is on now, and earlier they ran the ep where Ricky tells Little Ricky the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Very funny stuff! His mix of English and Spanish, and the vocal effects were just hilarious.

OK, I hear the whistling. TAGS is on, so I'm gone. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

I'm tempted to order it - you get two for one - but would like to know that the quality is there before I order. --Romeena

December 26, 2012 - Msg 91741: Asa, the card I mailed to Homemaker came back, too. It was marked, "unable to find". Curious.
Warm up your toolbelt, Asa...new year's party at O'Malleys.

Happy Birthday to MDC!

Had a great day today. Bruce stayed home with Erin and I went and did some browsing at a really neat antique mall and then took a drive. It is such a gorgeous day here so I love riding around and just looking at things out in the country. I visited a small town that had alot of older homes and I hardly saw a single soul. I am wondering why all the kids in town weren't out playing but I guess these days, kids are indoors playing their new video games. Sad, really. I did see a couple of really cute little girls with matching pink Nike sweatsuits, both walking a new puppy.

Still have some cleaning to do...still some dirty dishes in the sink and clean dishes to get out of the dishwasher.

December 26, 2012 - Msg 91742: Romeena, Remember the saying if it's to good to be true it usually is? That's my experiance with that hose. I bought one last year and it lasted about 2 weeks...Maybe if they give ya 4 for the price of one you might be ok for a couple of months.
Boo, Maybe Asa could use a dancing partner I think I have a extra tool belt for you!(he can't do it all).....

December 26, 2012 - Msg 91744: Thanks, G-F. I was afraid that might be the case with that hose. they sure make it look good on TV, but it does look a bit flimsy. There'll be a second generation of it though, in time. I'll just wait for the new, improved version. --Romeena

Howdy porch family.....my wife, daughter and myself went to Cracker Barrel tonight to eat....Got the fish again....good stuff. I just wish they would have lima beans all the time. They only have it as the "veg of the day" on Saturdays. I like just about all their veggies but to me it's the best veggie they have.
Possum....you need to talk to those folks:)

Prayer for the folks in the storm areas. It's been really windy here and we've had a good bit of rain but nothing serious...thank the Lord!

Got to get my motorhome serviced in the morning so I'll be busy all morning. Then my daughter wants me to go with her to get a few things done for her....Looks like my day is planned out for me already...lol

Better get some sleep. You all have a good night and I'll see ya tomorrow.
Love and prayers

December 27, 2012 - Msg 91748: TOM, I sent it to the right address, it just didn't get delivered, but thanks.

Hang in there SPOT...

Bruce made me a nice fire in the fireplace and it has been blazing all evening. It is actually in the 30's here, which doesn't happen real often so we are enjoying it. The dogs are already in their warm beds in the garage, snoozing. I had to get out to get some cold medicine for Erin and it didn't bother me...I love it.

Today was a good, relaxing kind of day...just the kind one needs after Christmas. Not sure what we will do tomorrow, but Erin being sick kind of changed the plans. Hope the rest of us don't pick it up.

December 28, 2012 - Msg 91763: Morning, porch. Hope everyone is staying warm. It will be up in the 70's here today and overcast. I am contemplating packing up the christmas decorations...this is the first year I can remember that I didn't want it all packed up right after Christmas. I am enjoying it so much. The house will look so bare without it. I guess I will wait until after new years.

Feeling really tired this morning. I think the busyness of Christmas is finally catching up to me...or I am coming down with Erin's cold. :(

Think I will finish the coffee and go put my feet up for a bit. Hope you all have a great last Friday of 2012. I think 2013 sounds real good, don't you all? :)

Hey Folks

Tom-I'm here Tom. Most of our storm came during the night but it was still there when we woke up. I guess I'm different than most folks, I enjoy winter. The blanket of snow, the cold, I love it.

pappa bear-The snow blower post was great, very funny. And it's great to see ya.

G-F I guess we had 14 inches of snow. The wind was blowing so strong it's almost too hard to tell.

Boo-We have big hopes for 2013. My wife has been calling it our year of recovery.

Still getting my feet under me on facebook. I mostly read the news feed.

Spot-I snow your nice snow covered Georgia land. How often is it white like that?

Hey MDC

December 28, 2012 - Msg 91770: I pray it is so, Auh2o. :)...your year of recovery. Its nice to hear someone say they enjoy the cold and snow. I know I would love it, too. Those times I spent in Colorado were the most blessed times. I didn't mind driving in it or being out in it..to me it was just beautiful. I will never forget the first time we rode snow mobiles in Winter Park, Co. We were in a group with a guide that first time and he took us up to the top of this mountain...a gentle snow was falling and the sky was gray. He told all of us to cut our engines and take off our helmets...total silence. I can still remember the way I felt in that stillness and quiet, just watching the snow fall. Amazing. :)

Nice weather here...cool and dry, just lovely. The kids and I took a drive this evening and had some conversation and laughter. Bruce is over working on his mom's computer. She is mad at him again because she is imagining that he has been going to her dr and talking about her. Her dementia makes her think some really strange things and poor Bruce is the one she usually is angry with these days. The good news is that we have not had anymore trouble with sis-in-law. She has backed away and is no longer sending emails or trying to engage us in her drama. I feel for her...she is a miserable, lonely person who is really very mentally sick. I hope and pray that someday she will get the help she needs.

December 28, 2012 - Msg 91771: Merry late Christmas, and Early Happy New Year porch family,I hope you all had a wonderful week. I feel like I've ate about 20 times this week. Gluttons!!! I so enjoyed getting all the cards in my mail box this year. Just reading through all the comments about the shootings going on, between the children, and the firefighters, and policemen who have been shot or shot at, it makes me wonder what else is going to happen before something is done. Such a sad world we are living in these days. Cold and sleeting on my porch tonight, supposed to be out of here by mid morning. I sure hope so. But it does make for good soup and cornbread weather. Asking for prayers for my little daddy, he fell on his concrete porch yesterday working in his firewood. We just knew he'd broken a hip, but thank the Lord it's just bruised. He turned 80 in Oct and you'd never know it. I hope you are all warm and safe tonight in this weather. Love and prayers to you all--Salty Dog.

December 29, 2012 - Msg 91772: Good to hear from you, Salty! Hope your dad is ok, bless his heart.

December 29, 2012 - Msg 91773: Hey Salty Dog. So good to hear from you. And prayers for your Daddy to get better soon. I hope you'll pop in more often. We miss you when you ain't here.
Boo, glad your weather is cooled down. My porch is at 12 degree's this morning. The kind of cold when you first go out in it and take a breath, it hurts your lungs and makes your nose sting. And the snow under your feet is frozen so it crunches. I don't know why, but that sound and feel of crunching snow is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. Gives me goose bumbs. Or maybe it's the cold that gives me goose bumps. Whatever it is, I get em. :)

We got a foot of snow auH2o. First serious snow we have had in two years. I can't believe how quick folks forget how to drive in it. Had accidents all over the place. 4 wheel drives are not just a luxuary here, but almost a nessecity, but it gives some folks a false sense of security I think. Yea, you can get good traction and start out fine, but you ain't gonna stop any quicker. Until you hit something that is. Then you stop as fast as the next guy.

Well better go play with the young-uns. They spent the night with us, and will be wanting breakfast. They love gwampa's "awfuls" (my nickname for waffles I make)

Asa

December 29, 2012 - Msg 91774: Good morning porch, Hope all is well today. We are on our way home today from Pigeon Forge . Patrick, Beth and I came down on Thursdsy and met my friends from Florida. Mr. Maude had to work so he stayed home to hold down the fort. We went to Dixie Stampede Thursday night and then
spent most of the day in Dollywood yesterday. It was a bit chilly but we had a good day. Heading home today. A good visit with my friend. They will head back to Fla. tomorrow.

It's good to see everyone. Glad you stopped by Salty Dog. Glad your Dad is ok.

Blessings and prayers all around.
