May 06, 2013 - Msg 93387: Happy Birthday to Maude (yesterday). :)

Yesterday was a wonderful day, full of the Lord's blessing. Last night, not so good...Erin was jumping on the trampoline yesterday and knocked the crystals back out of place in her inner ear and this time it is much worse that last time. She couldn't lie down or even close her eyes last night. She finally fell asleep around 1:30. I had some sort of unusual panic attack last night that I had to pray through. I barely slept and have alot to do today. Bruce is going to take Erin to the therapist to try to get her crystals back in place today. Please remember us in your prayers. Thanks.

Boo

May 06, 2013 - Msg 93388: Good Monday porch, hope all is well. raining and cool on my end of the porch, supposed to be rainy all day.

Prayers for you and your family BOO.

Prayers also needed for my long time friend/business partner. He has a biopsy scheduled in a week or so and is very worried about it. he doesn't seem to handle medical issues well so please pray he will have courage and strength to face this situation, thanks.

thanks for the birthday wishes. I had a good day.

good to see you ASA, thanks for the poem. made me
smile.

hey to SPOT?

Lunch menu will be: tomato soup, grilled cheese, chips, pickles. tea to drink. see you then.

Big Maude

May 06, 2013 - Msg 93389: Morning All,

Boo, I have had those panic attacks too! You have to keep your mind right that everything's ok, bear down and just hold on through it. Like going through a storm, keep telling yourself it will pass and, most of all, find calm inside yourself and lock on to it!

Belated B-day wishes, Maude.

Happiness and health to all.

May 06, 2013 - Msg 93390: Good morning, porch! What a beautiful day. Bright sunshine, and a little piece of it keeps flitting around in the yard, in the form of that little goldfinch. He's still here, though I have yet to see him visit the thistle seed feeder I put up for him. He may be here to stay awhile though, because I just saw a female goldfinch as well. If there's a pair, they've probably taken up residence. I think I'll go put some seed on the roof of that feeder and maybe they'll notice that. No sign of the parakeet this morning. I'm hoping Robbi saw him. She's already left for work. There are three different kinds of doves in the yard right now, and two bluejays, several mockingbirds, a pair of cardinals, and a mob of sparrows. Now if I could just spot that oriole, my morning list would be complete.

Sure will be glad when REV gets rested up and returns to reality and drops by. I'm so anxious to hear all about the wedding. I know it was just beautiful. Sometimes I'm tempted to get on Facebook, so I can see the pictures folks post, but I've just seen so many negative things happen related to that medium, that I'm reluctant to get involved. Got to think about that.

This keyboard is getting wonky. It does things I didn't tell it to do, or refuses to do things I did tell it to do. I've got some canned air, I think I'll go clean the thing out. Got to go outside to do it though. Years ago, I made the mistake of trying to blow the "dust" out of one while it sat on my desk. Turns out there's a darned sight more than "dust" in a keyboard! Who knew? I blew everything but Jimmy Hoffa's socks out of it. I had to get the dustbuster to clean up my desk! I haven't made that mistake again.

Well, today is a rehab day. Guess I'd better get busy. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Howdy porch family....what a weekend. My baby girl is a married woman......that was a tough weekend on dad but I made it :) Other than we had to have it inside everything went great. She was set on an outdoor wedding but it was just not meant to be but as I said...it turned out great. The song I wrote meant so much to her. The whole place was sniffing and blowing their nose's...lol Only God got me through it. They are on their honeymoon in St Lucia.....and I'm sure she's thinking of her dad right now...lol
By the way....I do have a picture of her right before the wedding on FB if you are on FB.

I pray you all are doing good...I know I've been off the porch for a while but as always, you're always in my thoughts and prayers.

Boo...I see you're having the surgery tomorrow.....will be praying for you!

You all have a very good night and know that Jesus loves you!

May 07, 2013 - Msg 93399: Good late evening, porch. Boo, you're in my prayers tonight. You are going to be just fine, and in a couple of days you'll be wondering what you were worried about.

REV, I'm so glad everything went well. I'm sorry she didn't get to have it outdoors, but she's married and that's what counts. I don't know how you managed to hold together and sing that song to her. You made a memory for her that she'll never forget. Now - I can hardly wait for the CD to come out, so we can all hear it.

If somebody is on Facebook that knows how to do it, would you mind emailing me that picture? I'm not on Facebook, guess I'm going to have to consider getting involved eventually.

My grandson (Robbi's son) and his very charming girlfriend were in town, and came to dinner tonight. She's a physician in Chicago, and was in town for a convention, so he came up from Fredericksburg to be with her while she's here. They seem to make the long-distance thing work pretty well, but one of them is always flying to see the other one. Anyway, she's cute as a button, smart and sweet and altogether charming. They're cute together, very kind to each other.

Well, I'm off to bed. They're coming back in the morning and I'm going to make them some pancakes, so will need to get up fairly early. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

Happy to hear everything went well for your daughters wedding Rev; I guess that is why the Lord gave me two boys because I don't know if I could give my little girl away. But sounds like you have gained a Son and they are beginning a beautiful lifetime together.

Hey RO how is little Toye Starr doing and have you been able to get the parakeet to go into the cage? I continue to look forward to your post hearing about your family, friends, and your wonderful garden and all of God's creatures that live there.

Hello to G-F; Asa; MDC; TOM; SPOT; John Masters and late Birthday wishes for Maude!

Thank you for letting me stop by and rock for a spell and please pray for my family and me; kinda' embarassed to request for prayer when it is a minor request compared to the needs of the other porchesters. I have made a decision to take a new job but it will be a considerable difference in income to the minus side but I believe God is leading in this direction and that there is long term gain over the short term pain of less money in our budget. It will also give my family Medical Benefits which we don't have now.

My apologies for writing a book and taking up the conversation.

Prayer for God's Blessings on our Nation and espeically for my friends here on the porch!

May 07, 2013 - Msg 93405: Good evening, porch! It's been such a beautiful day. I spent some time in the presence of real courage, when I visited my SS class member this afternoon. She's on Hospice care, and will probably go to the Lord fairly soon, but she has a big smile and an encouraging word, and not a hint of complaint. I just took some chicken salad and a cake over, was planning to spend the afternoon, but her son and daughter had arranged to be there, so I just stayed a few minutes and left. My friend asked if I could come again when they couldn't be there, and of course I agreed. Then - gracious to the bone - she called me this evening to tell me how much they enjoyed the chicken salad and the cake. How kind was that?? I pray that when my time comes, God will give me even a small measure of the courage and grace she has shown. Wow.

What a beautiful evening! The sun is getting low, and in a few minutes the light is going to change into that golden glow that I love so much. The birds are making a few last visits to the feeders and the water sources. That double clutch of fat little baby sparrows I mentioned earlier is still around, but the parents aren't trying to feed them anymore. They still stay together, in two groups of four, but the groups meld into one now and then. Their tails are almost full length now, and their flying is much more expert. Soon I'll lose track of them, and they'll just be part of the local sparrow population. We haven't seen the parakeet in a couple of days, but the cage is still out and I keep hoping he'll give up and come in. Poor little fellow.

I had a hanging planter that was lined with that coconut-husk fiber stuff, and another planter (a recycled child's dressing table) that was also lined with the stuff. Both have been completely destroyed, plants kicked to the ground, and all the husk pulled out and hauled off, allowing the dirt to fall to the ground. I do hope those baby squirrels are enjoying their nice soft nest! I'll say it once again - God knew what He was doing when He made the little varmints so cute. If they weren't, there wouldn't be a squirrel alive on this planet!

SMH, prayers for you as you make this crucial decision. Sometimes you have to step sideways, or even back a step or two, before you can move forward. This looks like one of those times. Trust God.

Well, I hear Robbi coming in. Guess I'd better run. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

May 07, 2013 - Msg 93406: Evening all.
Just popping in to see if we have any word on Boo. Been thinking about her all day.

You have my prayers SMH. Those medical benefits are a biggy for sure. I did something similar when I was younger. Left a good paying job (in fact they offered me even more to stay when I told them I was leaving) for a less paying position with coverage. I guess it worked out. Been there almost 28 years. I pray for your wisdom in doing the right thing.

Anyone watch Me T.V..? I have been excited because they are running Dragnet and Adam-12 reruns starting yesterday. Those two shows take me back to my childhood. I remember getting home from school, getting a snack, and turning on those two shows. And a lot of TAGS folks on them. John Masters (Olan Soal) was a regular.

Speaking of John Masters, hey to ya buddy. Stick around. We need to talk football. You guys have hired a pretty fine head coach I believe. I got to meet him when he played college ball here in Utah. Good guy. Very sad about his boys though.

Well Boo, check in when you can. Hope you are healing up now.

May 09, 2013 - Msg 93427: Well here I am, Asa, sittin' in my rocker. :) Everything went as fine as frog hair (just as everyone said it would). My doc was so impressed with my progress that she released me this morning after just two days. Now we all know it was prayer that accomplished that. She told me she had a hard time getting the cyst out, that is turned out to be even bigger than a soccer ball and was sitting all across the front of my lower abdomen. I have quite a long incision but it doesn't hurt much. Its sore muscles that are the worse. I guess maybe they had to do a little pulling and tugging. Anyway, that you again for the prayers and the Lord brought me through without a complication. Everyone was very competant and kind, also.

Just got a shower and need to dry my hair then sit in my easy chair for a bit. My appetite is not back yet and forcing down food so I can take medicine is no fun. That hospital had the worst food I have ever seen in a hospital. Last nigth I lifted the lid on what was supposed to be meatloaf and told Bruce, "Seriously?..They actually give this to sick people?". I left it untouched for sure.

I'll be back tomorrow. :)

May 10, 2013 - Msg 93439: SMH, I am so glad you explained because I was starting to think I left my memory on the OR table. I kept thinking, "Who is SMH? He knows all of us but I can't place him."...it was beginning to feel like that "stranger in town" ep with Ed Sawyer. :) Very glad you decided to come and join the conversation. You certainly fit right in, and thank you for the kind words. You are absolutely right, God is always good, isn't he?

They sent frozen sections of my cyst, etc. to pathology (standard procedure and wise thing to do), and they all came back benign. :)

Just had a pain pill and a shower and feeling pretty spiffy. Sore as you can imagine, but that's ok.

JM, I am letting everyone take care of me but having a hearing impaired husband in the kitchen is a problem!...He doesn't know where things are and can't fine anything. It took him forever to fix me breakfast this morning so I could take my medicine. I have decided that I have pampered my family far too much. Its time they learn to do some things around here. I just had the kids put in some laundry and Bruce is cleaning the kitchen. He just came in and asked me how to clean the iron skillet. Really? I've only had that skillet for 3 years (and use it almost every day). What does that tell you?

G-F, that meatloaf didn't exactly look like something from a bedpan...more like old wet, moldy cardboard or something. Didn't get any chicken al a king but an old, cold, unseasoned chicken thigh that had run a lot of miles (tee hee). Took one bite of that and couldn't do more.

Where's Romeena? Is she out getting into mischeif with Eloise?

May 10, 2013 - Msg 93440: Ya' know....it's been awhile since I sat any drinks out for the Porch. So...here's a pitcher of sweet tea and one pitcher unsweetened tea. Cups are stacked in between the two pitchers.

JM

May 10, 2013 - Msg 93442: Thank you BOO...I like that analogy...it actually probably fits as I have been reading the post on the porch for years and adopted it as my "home porch"...I really appreciate everyone accepting me now that we have the rumors out of the way about me being a foregin spy or from outer space...LOL
Thanks for the Tea JM...being a southern boy I love that Sweet Tea...think I will make a jug full when I get home tonight...my boys love it too! I also found a recipe for making that taste great and keeps down the acidity of the tea and keeps it from getting too sweet (going to sugar) when stored for a period of time.
I use a 2.5 quart Ice Tea maker with 5 Family Size Lipton Tea bags...here is the key...add about 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon of Baking Soda to the tea as it is brewing...I usually just add it on top of the ice in the pitcher so that it mixes with the tea as it percolated into the pitcher from the Ice Tea maker. Since granulated sugar does not mix well with cold liquids I make my own liquid sweetener. It is simple all you do is put granulated sugar (actually better for you than the artificial sweeteners) into a medium size pot on the stove at a medium to high heat setting and then add water. You will want to consistently stir the mixture until all the sugar dissolves in the water; you will be able to confirm this as the water will be cloudy looking with the sugar and once all the sugar crystals dissolve the water will be perfectly clear once again. Depending on how sweet you like to make you tea will depend on how much water and sugar you use; typically I use a 50/50 mixture so one cup of sugar to one cup water. You can use one of those bottles used for ketchup (pointed top) to store your sugar water in and for dispensing into your glass of tea; just add the sugar water until it reaches the level of sweetness you prefer. This method also allows each person to have their tea sweetened to their own preface. Our boys prefer sweet tea in this fashion over any soft drink and I feel it is better for them as we know what is used in it and can better control their sugar intake.
I spend years reading and enjoying your post and look at me now...once I have started writing I can't stop!
I am as bad as Maude and Cora Mendlebright who were the sisters who visited by phone on Sundays in the “Man in a Hurry” episode; Cora lived in Mt. Pilot and Maude in Mayberry.
Since it is Friday let’s all meet at the Chinese restaurant in M. Pilot for supper and get those little umbrellas’s put in our tea glasses!
Prayers and Blessings for all!

Aunt Bee: Did you like the white beans you had for supper?
Andy: Uh huh.
Aunt Bee: Well, you didn`t say anything.
Andy: Well, I ate four bowls. If that ain`t a tribute to white beans, I don`t know what is.
Aunt Bee: Well...
Andy: Eating speaks louder than words.
Aunt Bee: You know, your education was worth every penny of it.

May 10, 2013 - Msg 93443: Whoohooo! Boo is back in her chair. Now the world looks right again. Glad to have you back, and a big thank you to St. Susan for letting us know you were okay. This is one time when I guess it's okay to say "I told you so." I did, you know. I told you that you'd be fine, and here you are!

Now, it is indeed time that your family learned to do some of the work around there. You do them no favor by doing it all and not insisting that they participate. My mama made sure I could cook and clean and do laundry before I left home. I was cooking simple meals by the time I was ten, and could do the laundry as well, by twelve. In those days, there were no dryers, and no wrinkle-free clothing either. Clothes were washed, starched if indicated, hung out to dry, then dampened and rolled, to be ironed the next day. Laundry was a very big, time-consuming deal. I could clean house, too. I'm not saying I liked it, but I could do it.

When my kids came along, I taught them as I had been taught, and all four, including the boys, can cook, clean, do laundry and take care of themselves. In their homes, it's a team effort, and my grandchildren have received the same education. Big family meals around here are just purely fun, because everyone pitches in with the cooking, AND the clean-up. In fact, they usually run me out of the kitchen at clean-up time, then much teasing and laughing goes on while they finish things up. I clean up as I go while cooking, and there's a dishwasher, so there's not a lot to do, but they have fun with it anyway.

G-F, as for that frog hair sayin', around here it's "fine as a frog hair split four ways." Now you gotta admit, that's getting pretty fine!

SMH, would you refresh my leaky memory? I don't recall what the SMH stands for, if I ever knew. Whatever it is, I'm glad you finally spoke up. You fit in here like a hand in a glove, and we're enjoying your quotes.

Well, I just got home from rehab and a few errands, and am about ready for some lunch. Guess I'll rustle something up. Lots of leftovers in the fridge. I love leftovers!

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

May 10, 2013 - Msg 93444: Me again. SMH, I'm with you on the sweet tea, and what you make with the sugar and water is just a simple syrup, useful for a lot of things. Even though I'm an insulin-dependent diabetic, I do NOT use artificial sweeteners, in anything. Aside from the fact that they taste like cough syrup, and leave that whangy metallic taste in your mouth, they are simply not good for you. They are not recommended for pregnant women, or nursing mothers. That should tell us something right there. Some doctors (if they're honest) will admit that there are some disturbing studies being done, that indicate the things are not good for you. As if that would be hard to figure out. Let's see, what would my body prefer - natural sugar, or a chemical? Hmmm. I know, we have stevia now, supposedly a "natural" sweetener. It doesn't taste quite as bad as the other stuff, but it still doesn't taste right, and it's strange that it only takes a tiny amount of it to sweeten something. Just because it's plant-derived doesn't necessarily make it safe. The statin drugs are under fire, for good reason, so a lot of people have turned to taking a red yeast rice derivative instead, because it's "natural." Uh - red yeast rice, when digested, yields a metabolite that is - guess what - a statin. So, natural doesn't always mean safe.

So, if I make sweet tea, I use sugar. It's been around for centuries, in one form or another, from just the juice crushed out of the cane, to our crystallized, refined and soluble form. My body knows what to do with that, even if I do have to supply the insulin it needs in order to do it. Actually, I drink my tea plain, but once in a while, for a real treat, I'll have sweet tea, and I want sugar in it, not a chemical.

When I was first diagnosed with diabetes, about ten years ago, my doctor told me to switch to diet sodas. I told him I didn't do artificial sweeteners at all, so would drink plain tea. He said that was great, because "I don't trust the artificial things, but most people insist on sweetening everything, so I tell them to use them." We discussed it recently, and he's even less sold on the fake stuff now, says he thinks they will be removed from the market eventually. It won't bother me one bit when they're gone.

Well, this time, I'm really going to go eat something. --Romeena

May 10, 2013 - Msg 93445: Hello there RO...glad to see you today...I was beginning wonder where you were at!

SMH = Smoky Mountain Hillbilly...not very Mayberryisk (is that a word) but it does pretty much describes me.

Totally agree with you on the artificial sweeteners; my wife does not take insulin but does have to take medicine and check her sugar level each day so rather than use any diet drinks with artificial sweeteners she just sticks to just basic water. I think it is a lesson for us that God created our bodies to function with the basic foods he has provided for us rather than all the chemically created or altered processed food we have.

Well almost time for me to leave work and head home to my wife and babies (14 year old and 8 year old but will always be my babies) and get ready for probably be some muddy ball fields.

An early Happy Mother's Day to all Mothers and Mother Figures on the Mayberry Porch!

I will try to drop in between ball games this weekend!

Andy: That's right. Now the United States is bounded on the north by Canada, on the south by Mexico, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by, uh, would, uh, you happen to know that?

Andy: No. All the way to the edge – big body of water.
Ernest T. : Old Man Kelsey's crick.
Andy: Ocean.

May 10, 2013 - Msg 93446: Hey Romeena, Now I remember who SMB is..Sorry, we forgot glad you reminded us. If you want real sweet tea there is no substitute for the real thing. I just cut back on the other sugary things when I want tea, then I just go for it.

May 10, 2013 - Msg 93451: Well I like you just fine, SMH. You fit right in. I like idea about the sugar syrup. I, like your wife, take diabetic medication and I only drink water or unsweet tea...never sodas and NEVER diet sodas. I think the sugar syrup would be good for my husband, who uses too much sugar in his tea because he mixes regular sugar in cold tea. I think he would use alot less if it were in syrup form. I will have to try that.

Yes Ro, you told me so...I believed you, and it was so. :) Lots of prayers and the good Lord let me know it would all be well, too. I am some kind of sore, though! Some friends from church brought by a wonderful selection of sandwich makings and cake today, and its a good thing because I was starving. My appetite is finally coming back.

I had my first "hormone" reaction tonight, I think. I guess I would call it a crying "jag" for absolutely no reason...curious. Came suddenly and left suddenly and I ended up laughing at the ridiculousness of it. Guess that's the mood swings they talk about...here and gone...haha.

Better get up and walk for a bit.

Well, tomorrow is my dad's 95th birthday!!
Unbelieveable after this past year's situations!
All eight kids and families will be here.
Should be fun. Please say a prayer that all
goes well. Thanks. Pop has been doing well at the new home, eating better, etc, so that has been a real blessing!

May 11, 2013 - Msg 93453: MDC.. Tell your Dad "Happy Birthday" from the Goob! Good to hear he's eating better. They must NOT be feeding him any "Bed Pan" meatloaf! Sounds like he's getting "real food" and not some slop you drink from a straw! (A funny line from Burt Lancaster in "Tough Guys") he co-starred with Kirk Douglas as 2 guys released from prison after 40 yrs. and the troubles they have adjusting to life on the outside these days. Funny one, ever see it? If not, watch it after you watch the Straight Story.
One more thing, ever get on the Air force Museum's web site? you can do a virtual tour thru the Museum & even inside some of the planes. Try it, Dad may enjoy it.

Boo, Good to see you are continuing on the mend, hopefully your family are "specializing" on ya, you deserve the recovery time.. Just stay away from that bed pan meatloaf! They have these things called TV dinners now, nothing wrong with them I like em! (they do have meatloaf ones too)
Just incase Randy doesn't do leg of lamb..haha

May 11, 2013 - Msg 93454: Happy Saturday Morning Porch!

Sorry for all the confusion I caused...guess I should have spelled out my name and re-introduced myself when I started posting again but I guess I just felt so at home and with family that I just took for granted you knew or remembered who I was.

Happy Birthday to your Dad MDC...95 that is amazing and a real milestone...I only hope that the Lord will grant me that many days to see my boys raise thier families!

Better get going...rain has stopped here on this end of the porch and it may dry up enough for the baseball games later today...we spend a lot time at the ballpark with our boys but we love it!

Continue to take care of yourself BOO; Hey to GF; POSSUM; RO; SPOT; REV and tell any other Porchesters that I have missed "Hey" from SMH.

Prayers and Blessings for everyone!

May 11, 2013 - Msg 93455: Morning all.
Happy Birthday to MDC's Daddy. How wonderful, and I am so glad he is doing well MDC. Give him a salute and a thanks from me. So sad to see that generation moving along. Sad for us at least. But wonderful for them. What a legacy they have left for us.

Glad you are healing up well Boo. And glad you are getting help and support from family and friends. Enjoy it. You deserve it. And glad everything from the lab came back good.

I agree with everyone else SMH. You fit in real good here. Just hope you stick around. We have had so many who leave for one reason or another. Wish they wouldn't, but that's life, through and through.

How are things at work GF? Getting serious about A/C stuff now I bet. We are supposed to hit close to 90 this weekend. Early for that for here.

Well better get going. Gotta get some yard work done today before the neighbors petition to move me out.

Asa

May 11, 2013 - Msg 93456: "We will not move", "We will not move!" Asa don't worry if the neighbors get on ya, Aunt Bee and her "girls" will have your back!...
I don't even have my A/C fired up yet. It's cold & rainy here today. Asa, I do have to get 49 P-Tac units pulled and coils cleaned thanks to the lawn mower guys! :[ You tell em' and tell em' I think they are deft from the mower noise. I think if THEY had to do the work, they would be more careful where they blow the grass, is what I'm thinkin! I'm just sayin'.....(maybe let the air out of their tires?)

May 11, 2013 - Msg 93460: Wow, 90 degrees, Asa? its not even near that here in south texas now. We had alot of rain and a great thunderstorm last night. yay! Great for the garden Bruce put in. We have green beans, broccoli, okra, tomatoes and sweet corn...I think that's all...I was not able to be involved with the process this time.

Thanks MDC, I'm not hittin' the squeezins but I am on the pain pills...could have something to do with the crying jag, i supposed. I have had zero symptoms of sudden loss of estrogen, though. I am thinking that I must have been about done at my age and can't really notice the difference. ;) I haven't even been cranky or sad or anthing like that other than that one freak episode. So wonderful about your dad. 95 and doing ok...what a blessing! My mom seems to be doing better since she is off the Coum@din and on Pr@daxa. Guess she was right about needing to go off the stuff. She is 86 now and seems to be like the energizer bunny, no matter what. :)

Last night I was sleepy but had a hard time sleeping in the bed. The pain wakes me every couple of hours and I have to try to turn in bed. Trying to heft all my weight in the bed with nothing to hold onto but the headboard is misery. I tried sleeping in the recliner but that didn't really work, either. Right now all I am taking is Vic@din 500 every 4 hours, which doesn't seem like much but that's what is ordered. Maybe tonight will be better.
