October 13, 2015 - Msg 102981: Morning porch, hope everyone is doing well this Tuesday morning.

storms during the night on my end of the porch. thunderstorms and rain woke me sometime during the night. seemed to move through the area so just cloudy as I drove to work.

Thanks for the APB MDC. I have been busy at work, not getting home till about 6 or 7 most nights so I have not around much.I will try to do better..

Leaves are starting to turn to fall colors but falling off the trees quickly seems like. guess it was the dry weather at the end of summer as well as the recent rain.

hope everyone has a blessed day.
Prayers for everyone\

October 14, 2015 - Msg 102983: Good morning Porch ! here at work miss Spot and I fly out to Kansas to the international lineman Rodeo in the morning ! hope we do well....breakfast?..SPOT

October 14, 2015 - Msg 102984: I'm sure you will Spot. You always seem to kick behind in those events. Good luck and watch out for "flying houses" there in Kansas.

Good to see you Big Maude. BTW, You any relation to that Eleanor Poultice? :)

I am in full winterization mode here. Have accomplished much, but much more to do. We might get some rain and cooler weather by the weekend. It sure has been nice though. Supposed to be near 80 today.

Better go take advantage of that weather I reckon. I have a bunch of pole lights to repair today. So I will be in the boom truck all day.. Now GF, figure out a way I can mount a "Wheeler" on my boom truck buddy. That would be a sweet deal. lol

Asa

October 14, 2015 - Msg 102985: LOL Asa, that would put a whole new meaning to having a " lift chair"....haha. BTW, your boss did say you were getting a "Raise" but he didn't tell you what kind! Remember when you are up in that boom truck be sure to hook the black wire to the black and white wire to white, ect... Or as they say it could all go boom! Guess that's why they call it a boom truck... Be careful out there Buddy!....

SPOT, Good Luck to "Team SPOT" hope your guys lasso alota poles so you can bring home the big trophy 🏆

Glad to see Maude check in... You missed the long autograph lines @ MD's this year, it sorta put a cramp on the other activities having to wait in the lines. But it's all good, I have 2 great treasures to my collection tho.

If you guys want to see some pictures, Surry Arts Council posted them on their web site... surryarts.org

October 14, 2015 - Msg 102988: Good afternoon, porch! Well, I think Ted has finally finished all that needed to be done around here. All the lights are installed, except for one set across the back of the house. He'll come back by tomorrow to put those in. They're easy, just going to snake through the shrubbery, plugged into a multi-outlet extension. No line power outlets to be installed. He'd have done them already, but the extension just arrived from Amazon a few minutes ago. Would you believe, Lowe's and the Depot both told me they didn't have anything like that, didn't carry it, and yet I found it easily on Amazon. I now have light, light, light around this house at night. Very pretty, much safer, and so cheap to operate. It's all LED, I first figured it at less than 14¢ per night. With the newer ones added, it comes out to 21.5¢ per night, or just under $7 a month, for all those pretty lights, and the security they provide. If these were incandescent lights, I don't even want to think of what it would cost. CFLs would be a bit less, but still nowhere near as cheap as LED, and I hate the light they throw. LEDs were far too expensive at first, but they've come down a long, long way, and will no doubt get cheaper still.

Tomorrow, the plumber comes for the annual "Fall Cleanout" on the sewer line out front. Those lines are old (43 years) and no doubt have tiny cracks in them. There are trees nearby, and the little hairlike roots get in the lines, and grow into a tangled ball, which stops up the line. Every year, at Thanksgiving or Christmas, I would have to call a plumber to clear the line, right in the middle of cooking a holiday meal. I asked him about replacing the line, or relining it with PVC. He said he could do it, but it would require a lot of digging, disturbing major tree roots, tearing up my yard and would cost from $750 to $1000. On the other hand, he can come every fall, when the trees are going dormant, run a "rooter" thing from the clean-out near the house all the way to the main line at the street and clear the line completely, for $85. I'd sooner part with $85 once a year, forever if necessary, than $1000 all at one time. So, for the last three years, we've cleaned the line out in October, and have had no more clogs.

Then on Friday, Joe comes back to finish clearing weeds, pruning where needed, and to plan the addition of dirt and compost to beds that have settled, and adding mulch to everything! It's about time to put the yard to bed for the winter. A tree trimmer is coming to check a big limb that is looking very iffy, and if it comes down, it's going to land on my garage roof. It's okay now, but if it gets a load of ice on it this winter, it won't make it. I can see where the underside of the limb looks weak and rotten, and it's a straight-out lateral limb. It won't hold. Seems like there's always something! However, like my dad always said, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I'd rather have that limb removed now by choice, than have to get someone to get it off the house and then have to repair a three-year-old roof.

Well, I'm going to go kick back in my no-wheeler and relax a while. I'm not even planning to cook any supper. I'll just open a can of something and be happy I've got it. Doesn't even much matter what it is. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

October 15, 2015 - Msg 102991: MDC, I have never been to the R&R HOF, all I know is I would not want to wash all those windows!..lol Funny thing, I grew up and lived & worked in Canton most of my life but have only been to the Football HOF one time with my Son on a Father/Son day event. People come from all over the world and I lived less than a mile away... Curious, Curious....

I too wonder about our WikkiHoratio, hope he is well, maybe he is just on a walk-a-bout? Good on him....

Asa, maybe we can find Romeena a "Wheeler" that has a boom arm to hang all her lights with? But it would have to have a side car for her furry companion is what I'm thinking....

G-F......

October 15, 2015 - Msg 102992: Good evening, porch. Welcome to Ronald Bailey. Nice to have you join us - just be sure to drive carefully and don't run any farmers off the road. I figure you've grown up a bit since those days, right?

Ted came this morning, and we got the lights in place in the shrubbery across the back of the house, switched some bulbs around on the side of the house to get better color combinations, and I think we're about finished. I'm going to try to reactivate some of the dead low-voltage lights that are still in place in the flower beds, but I'll take my time doing that. Those bulbs burn out so quickly, it's hard to keep them burning. They've been out a while, and in most cases, I'm not sure whether the bulbs are burned out, or if someone working in the yard has cut one of the low-voltage wires. That happens too, now and then.

I mixed up a big old bowl of tuna salad at noon, and will have a great sandwich for supper! I make gooood tuna! Tuna, dill relish, sweet relish, diced pickled jalapeños (they're not hot), a little chopped onion, chopped pecans, a dash of Tabasco (it IS hot), and Tostitos brand spinach dip for the dressing. Put that on a good wholegrain/nut/seed bread, and it's really tasty! The sandwich, a handful of chips, and a big glass of tea, and I'm all set.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

October 15, 2015 - Msg 102993: Howdy friends. Hope you are all well and blessed. Things are going pretty well here. It is far too warm for October the 15th, but that's just the way the cooking crumbles. I will be all the happier so see some cool temps. We have yet to have a cool front so it has been hot for 6 months now. It has been in the nineties all week here.

This morning I looked out the front window and saw my dogs standing over something in the fron yard. Erin went out there to see what it was and she said it was something dead they had gotten ahold of. I took a brief look from the house and saw a lump of something gray out there and didn't think much more of it. I went to take Erin to school and noticed one of the dogs pushing sand over to try and bury it. Well, at about noon, I heard one of our dogs going nuts barking....you know the kind of barking when a dog trees a coon or something..frantic, high-pitched. I looked out to the carport and saw out dog Ollie trying to get under Sean's car but he couldn't fit. I went out, put the dogs in the garage and took a look. Turns out that gray lump in the yard was a possum "playing possum" this morning. It revived and tried to get away and I guess the dogs chased it under the car. I moved the car, and it just sat there looking at me and Sean. It slowly went and got behind a bush. I was trying to figure out how to trap it and get it out of there because it was 95 degrees outside an the garage was far too hot to keep the dogs in there until Bruce got home. We went inside to find a box and when we cam outside, the possum had gotten under my car. We moved my car, and there it sat again looking at us. It was a young possum, and cute..not showing of fangs or hissing. I think I could have probably walked over and picked it up at that point. Poor thing was very tired and traumatized. It lumbered over to the flowerbed and Sean and I were finally able to get it in a box. I put it in a pet cage we had and called animal control. Soon a truck pulled up and a darling young girl hopped out, walked over to the cage, opened it and grabbed the possum by the tail and lifted it out. I wondered why I hadn't thought of that. She said she would take the possum to a secluded area and let it out there. I guess I could have done that myself. Anyway, all ended well and I was able to let the dogs out of the garage. Just thought I would share that littke adventure with you.

continued..

October 15, 2015 - Msg 102994: Besides that, it was a pretty busy day. There is the ever-present laundry and chores, and I had to take Sean for his final follow up with the oral surgeon. All is well. While we were in town I actually did a little of my Christmas shopping. I am trying to get it all done before December since I am working and will be busier than usual this year. I found some adorable Christmas cards to send to my porch buddies. Are we sending cards as usual?

I am waiting to see the holiday schedule come out at work. I hope I will be off Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. After all the family has been through the last year, we are going to try and celebrate the holidays this year. Its been over a year since Mom passed and it is getting much easier. My nephew, Matt, is still struggling after his wife left, but he is doing better and fixing up the house he and his wife shared. he said he is going to decorate and put lights on the house this year. It was almost like the holidays didn't exist for us last year but things are looking up.

Erin is going on a youth retreat this weekend and is looking forward to that. Please say a prayer that things go well and she is safe. They will be on a ranch where there is dove hunting, so I am always concerned about that.

Well, I better go get the clothes out of the dryer and think about getting to bed..have to work tomorrow.

Love to All,
Boo

October 16, 2015 - Msg 102995: Good morning, porch. Boo, it's so good to hear from you! I fully understand about the time constraints. Now that I'm about 95% retired, I look back and wonder how on earth I managed to work and still have any kind of a life. There are so many things going on, so much to do, I don't know where I would fit those 12 hour shifts into the mix, and I didn't have a family to look after. You do! How you manage, is a mystery. It makes me appreciate your visits here all the more.

Good for you, for rescuing that young possum. They're actually handy little critters to have around, as they dig up and eat the grubs that damage your lawn. Your little one must have been very, very good at playing dead, if one of your dogs was trying to bury him! That's too funny. I'm glad you got him relocated though, because the dogs would have eventually killed or injured him. I have one that trundles through my yard frequently. Sometimes I see him, but most likely I just see the little holes he leaves behind when he digs up a grub. He doesn't have to worry about a dog here. Toye Starr never sets a tiny paw outside, and if she did, the possum would probably "whup" her. For that matter, the squirrels would probably beat her up. She's not exactly ferocious, not much of a threat.

I'm glad to hear your nephew is doing better. As hard as it is to get over a loss by death, I think the component of rejection in a situation like his would be very hard to deal with. Also, the person isn't "gone" in the true sense of the word. You still have to see them and at times interact with them, but the relationship is gone. Very difficult indeed.

Well, better go feed my little companion. She's sitting here, staring a hole through me, and I know that's what she wants. People say dogs don't talk, but they do. People just don't listen. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

HI GANG, Long day today. Not particularly busy, but I had to take a visitor

Funny thing is, for the last three years of my dad's life I drove 40 miles one way, 80 mile round trip, 5 days a week, and it didnt seem to bother me like the one trip today did. Wonder what causes that?
STERLING--shall we just say ETB! ha
BOO and RO, I dont think a possum would last long around here. It was still 95 yeaterday, but now we have rain coming in to finally cool us down.

October 17, 2015 - Msg 103000: MDC, I think there are several still unbeaten, Denver, New England, Green Bay, Cincinnati, Carolina, all I know it's NOT the Browns! Johnnie Football is back in the news again, he and his girlfriend were out and had to many adult consumeable beverages and got into a tiff and somebody call the police. That Boy!....
Since it's "Cold" around here I may just eat my homemade chicken noodle soup and catch a game, Ohio State plays the Boys from "Happy Valley" tonight under the stars.... As far as the Browns... I think Denver will stay undefeated after playing them tomorrow.... So it may be better to watch "Heidi"....lol

Glad to see you pop in Sterling, Yep, Sometimes it's best, "When we say nothing at all!" As the song goes.... Then we don't get into trouble, I have found.... haha!.... But on the flip side, as I also say: "Sometimes it just HAS to be said, so I could not help myself but to get into trouble....As life goes...

Possum, it's good to hear that Boo is a friend all possums everywhere, good on her for saving that fella instead of whacking him with a big stick!...

Auh2o, they are talking about a chance of some snow flurries too in the higher elevations..... And MDC has 95 degrees, wonder what causes that? It must be the "bomb" I'm guessin'..

October 20, 2015 - Msg 103017: Good morning, porch! Beautiful day here. Gonna be cool, just 64° right now, low 80s expected. Fall is on the way. No leaves turning just yet, but it won't be long.

Yep, the cold is finally gone, and all that's left is the glue in my chest, which will remain for weeks and weeks, and I'll cough every time I try to laugh. It's been that way all my life, I'm used to it. I'm just grateful it was a simple cold. I have a dear friend who has struggled for the past two or three years with chronic respiratory infections, sinus infections, pneumonia, just one thing after another, back to back. She's been in the hospital, and almost had to go on a ventilator at one point. She's been a good friend for 43 years, and it hurts me to see her in such distress. Right now, she's better. We just had her 75th birthday party, and she looks better than I've seen her in a long time. Thank you, Lord!

This morning Eloise and I are going to the hospital to "be there" for another friend who is having a knee replacement. Bless her heart, she has really had problems. She has bad arthritis, and about four years ago she had a horrendous back surgery to straighten and selectively fuse the worst vertebral joints. The incision ran the entire length of her spine, from her neck to the sacral plate. Makes my back surgery look like a day at the beach. Now she's having back problems because her knee is so painful she walks crooked and favors it heavily, so is pulling her spine out of line again. The doctor said she had no choice but to fix the knee if she wants to keep moving, so she's doing it. That hospital waiting room will never be the same. I'll bet there will be twenty of us out there. This lady is very special, much loved by all. Please - pray for Joan.

Well, gotta run. Asa, get some of that baby-neck sugar and send me a little package, okay? Just nothing like baby-neck sugar! Blessings, friends. --Romeena

October 20, 2015 - Msg 103026: Good evening, porch. I just got home from a gathering at a friend's house, and got scared out of ten years growth on the way home. I was traveling down a familiar road, approaching an intersection, when a car unexpectedly shot out of the parking lot of a business on the other side of the road I was on, straight across the road right in front of me and into the turn-in for an apartment complex that was on my right. I literally stood on my brakes, they began to chatter when the anti-lock system kicked in, and by God's grace, I didn't hit him. He must have been doing at least forty when he crossed in front of me, and he had come from across the street, had traveled maybe 75 feet. He was burning rubber, and I could hear his car's engine roaring. He had it to the floor. His rear tire clipped the curb, as he entered that driveway, and why the rear end of his car didn't swing into the front of mine, I don't know. There was nothing behind me. Why he took such an impossible chance to cross ahead of me is a mystery. At least I know my reflexes are still good. I've never come that close to hitting something in all my years of driving. I still don't know how we didn't collide. I think God must have intervened.

Anyway, I pulled into the gas station on the corner, next door to the apartment complex he drove into, and just sat a minute to let the adrenaline drain away so I'd quit shaking. When I turned onto the cross street and drove a block or so, I looked back and could see police car lights in the station I'd just left, so I circled back. I thought maybe the car was somebody they'd been chasing, and I knew where he had gone.

That was not the case, they had just pulled a kid over for a stop sign roll-through, and let him go. I called an officer over and told him what had happened, and said that the way the car shot across the street, cutting me off like that, made me think he was running from something, like maybe he had just held somebody up? The lot he came flying out of is a convenience store. The officer thanked me and said he would definitely check that out. I hope he didn't find a body behind a counter! Sure scared the bejabbers out of me! Thank God for a car with good brakes and new tires.

Well, I think I can settle down now. Congrats, Spot, on your team's success at the rodeo. We knew you could do it! Blessings, friends. --Romeena

Romeena, Stacey and Charlotte are both doing great. She had her first Doctors visit and she is up to 5 ponds, 11 oz. That is still small, but she dropped almost a pond right after she was born. And she is eating and pooping well. Sorry, but that is how they judge it. :) Glad you didn't have an accident. It is crazy out there.

Sounds like you da man Billy Ray. Those reboots fix a lot of things anymore.

Congrats on the win Spot, and thanks for the vittles. Hit the "spot".

MDC, I wish Karen Knotts would bring her show to Utah. I would love to see it. I saw her interviewed after her Dad passed and really enjoyed some of the insights she offered about him and his work ethic.

Well speaking of work ethics, I better go demonstrate mine I reckon.

Prayers for all.

October 21, 2015 - Msg 103033: Wow, so glad you werent injured, Ro! Scary..seems like every day I see someone do something really wreckless and I hate to think how bad things might get on the roads. I am getting older and that kind of thing bothers me more than it used to.

Wanted to drop in and ask for prayer for my cousin Dan. I have asked prayer for him before. He is 40, a juvenile onset diabetic (since age 2), and has been very ill off and on over the past five years. He has been suffering alot the past 2 to three years. Right now he is in ICU on a ventilator and has aspiration pneumonia. He is getting good care, but he is very critical. I think he is ready to go on but his mom, my very dear Aunt Linda, is having a terrible time. She called me today and was crying. It hurts that she is up in Michigan and I cant be there with her to help. I try to always be a listening ear and I pray. I send her a little something each month to pay for expenses, but I just have a hard time with the seperation. She is my mom's little sister and since mom passed, we have gotten even closer. My heart just breaks for her. Please lift her to God in prayer. Thanks so much.

Have to go help Sean with his homework...can you imagine? Me working on automotive technology? :) I always quiz him on his tests. He made an A on an exam yesterday.

Love,
Boo

October 22, 2015 - Msg 103034: BOO--you got 'em dear. So sorry to hear, God's will be done.
Just a quick hello tonight, had a lot of running around to do, and am pooped. Keep well all!

October 22, 2015 - Msg 103035: Prayers for sure Boo. Sorry to read about that.

So in your helping Sean with his homework, start with the basics, like has it got gas? Even though it says you got an F, you might have an E. F means full, E means empty. Sometimes them gauges stick, just like switches on vacuums will stick. :)

GF, I had a much better summer concerning broken pvc tee's on sprinkling systems. I attribute that to installing a pressure regulator on the system. But now a new problem is showing up, not on sprinkling systems, but on my inside domestic water lines. I have had several small pin holes develop on copper lines, in more than one building. Each time the hole has shown up within a half inch or closer to a soldered joint. Just curious if you encountered similar issues in your pre "wheeler" days. The buildings are 30 years old, but I sure thought copper would last longer than that. Uusally the repair isn't to difficult, other than accessing the thing sometimes is a pain, but the damage the water does is a real mess. Damaged sheetrock, or drop in ceiling panels and what not. Oh well, it keeps me practicing my soldering skills, or in the case where I can't let it spend two days letting the pipes dry out to solder, I use the "sharkbite" fittings. I am still skeptical of those, because they are so simple to install, but I have not had a failure yet on one. I still solder whenever I can, but have used the "sharkbites" at times when soldering was not feasible. I wish I could just "reboot" the entire plumbing system and call it good, but that won't work this time. What a mess I've made of my life! lol

Off to solder pipe.

October 22, 2015 - Msg 103036: Asa, Oh Yes! I had a lot of those problems especially in 4 of my buildings. Two of those buildings were "sister" buildings built back in the 70's the 3rd was a hi-rise also built in the 70's the fourth was a hi-rise that was replumbed in 2001. So you could imagine the problems draining the lines for repairs. For those we used shark bites and the solder less compression fittings.
The pipes on the inside looked like termites had been eating at them. We sent samples out to get analyzed, some of the problem was just bad quality copper, but the concession by the experts was "water velocity" where we had circulator pumps to push the water to the extremities. They said it created a spinning vortex inside the pipe causing the erosion of the pipe.

All said and done, I'm glad I don't have to deal with it anymore because it really got old, it took up a lot of out maintenance time! So I feel for Ya Buddy!....🚱

Sorry folks for the Tool Time talk y'all, but Asa IS one of my kind!...lol. So I needed to help my brother out. 👍

October 22, 2015 - Msg 103037: SHAKEDOWN!! (:

October 22, 2015 - Msg 103038: You da MAN GF. Everyone of these leaks have occurred on the hot water lines that have small circulator pumps on them with hot water return lines. Did you have the same thing with the leaks all happening close to soldered joints? All of my boiler heat runs through copper lines with pumps on them. But they are low pressure, regulated down to about 15 to 20 PSI. So I hope that will work in my favor. None of those have had any issues.... yet.
Thanks for the feedback and electronal marvel support buddy.

Asa

October 22, 2015 - Msg 103039: Yep Asa, most of them were close to fittings and joints, mainly because that is where the resistance is. But not in all cases, we felt like the kid with his finger in the dam, every time you fixed one, three more poped up when we pressurized the line. It got to the point I told my guys to just put a piece of rubber on the pin hole and a clamp. You know, we never had problems at the end of the day or on Fridays...lol. Right?....haha

I'm no engineer, but if I was, I think putting pumps in the middle somewhere may help move the water better at less velocity to push the water to the extremities. It's hard to push water hundreds of feet both horizontal & vertically. But the at source heaters help too but they are another problem, as we discussed before..... You know what ya get when you try and you try..... Just ask Barney!...

While on the subject, what always burned me was when they did do renovations and upgrades, did (They) ever ask the guys that worked on the systems for their opinions?? No, we are just maintenance guys, they are the ones that have the certificates on the wall that say they are SMART!.... Am I right or am I right?.... All we can say when it goes South we can say: "We tried to tell 'em didn't we Andy....lol

As my "T" shirt says.... "All I needed to know in life I learned from the Andy Griffith Show"... But Yes, sometimes ya gotta "Call the Man!"... 🔧

So, GF and ASA, I sure am getting learned from ya both. Interestin stuff. But I sure hope it wasnt our Arizona copper. BTW, I liked the clip, thanks.
RO--hope you have "recovered" from your "near death" experience! We sure do have crazy drivers here.

October 23, 2015 - Msg 103044: Good morning, porch! It's raining, it's raining! Rain, rain, beautiful rain!!! It's been coming down all night, and right now it's a curtain of water out back, I can barely see the back fence! I wish I was staying in today, but have a home health visit to make, so away I go. It's okay, I won't melt.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

October 23, 2015 - Msg 103045: Still raining, and raining, and raining! It's still coming down in buckets out there. My little flagstone pathway through the back yard had about two inches of water on it, the pond is full and overflowing, there's not a critter in sight (all holed up somewhere, I guess) and the pump outlet at the street is a continual geyser, about a foot and a half high! Without that drainage system, the water would be lapping at my back door. Pump, don't fail me now!!

Yippee! I called my home health client to verify the time, and she asked if I could come tomorrow instead. Uh, yes, I believe that can be arranged! I do have the latitude to adjust the visit schedule, since my orders are to see her three times a week, no specific days mentioned. So, I don't have to leave the house on this day of torrential rains. I am one happy old gal. I'm going to start cleaning out around here, and de-cluttering, to make it easier the installation of the new carpet in the next couple of weeks. Also, I may get a little writing done. A couple of stories are rattling around in my head, maybe I'll get them written down. A rainy day is a good day to do either of those things. First, though, I think I'll go make myself some bacon and eggs and toast. Anyone want to join me? Blessings! --Romeena

October 23, 2015 - Msg 103046:
Hey folks. I'm stuck in the states on an extended stay while my family is back in Canada. I'm preparing to sell my parent's home by getting rid of the contents first. I began by holding an estate sale that generated over $7,000. Afterwards, some of the stuff that remained got listed on Ebay, and that has generated over $1,500 so far. Also, finding $1,000 in cash hidden in the house was a pleasant surprise because, according to my research, I might be able to sell this very old currency for double their cash values. So far, I've made a total of $9,500. Not bad for one month's work. And the best part is that it is not over yet.
I also had to deal with some major repairs. The plumbing problems I was able to repair myself. As for the storm damage to the roof, because it is covered by the homeowner's insur@nce, I used Angie's List to find a reputable roofing business to deal with it because I don't feel safe working on the angled roof at my age.
So I have been busy.

Yesterday, I was watching the TAGS episode Barney's First Car and noticed some confusing dialogue. When Barney, Andy and Mrs. Lesh were talking before Barney buys the car, Mrs. Lesh expressed concern about selling the car to Barney because she hardly knew him. Then Andy comes to Barney's defense by saying "If you're worried about his credit rating, I can vouch for that." But Barney was going to pay the full price and not make a down payment, so there was no financing involved. So why mention Barney's credit rating?
