Yes, Spotty, I heard about Burt. He was indeed a classic. R I P cool guy.
Well, I met with the surgeon today for one last Q and A before next Friday. I have to get a bunch of pre-op tests done on Thursday, and then the heart operation on Friday.
He told us (cecile too) what to expect afterwards. Four drain tubes coming out of me, and will beon lots of pain meds. ICU for at least the first day, maybe longer depending how I recover. I feel pretty good about it, but would be lying if I said i wasnt just a wee little bit apprehensive. He is cutting into my ticker after all! Well, I'm relying on my faith in the Lord and in this surgeon's skills. There IS a Bible, plain as can be, in his waiting room,
so I think that is a sign from above.
MBM, did you get RO's book OK?
Hi to Frankie and NN. I see you both have turned in for the night. :)

September 07, 2018 - Msg 110603: Thanks, MDC. It's an interesting situation here and there is drama but not unexpected.

MDC, you will be in my prayers daily. Any sane person would be a little anxious. God loves you and you are his. You will be a-okay, and we will be praying through it all.

Boo

September 07, 2018 - Msg 110604: Good morning, porch. Ditto what Boo said, MDC. She said it well and truly. Also, I will echo what he said to you, Boo. You are a brave soul to take on a trip like that. I have no patience with drama, or with those who cause it, and am not sure I could do what you're doing. God will reward!

We have had some much-needed rain the past couple of days. Eddie came yesterday, prepared to both mow and weed, and barely got the mowing finished before the rain began, so the weeds still reign supreme in the flowerbeds, getting more abundant and strong every day, thanks to the rain. It is making me crazy! Thanks to both my physical and financial limitations, my once-beautiful yard is a far cry from what it used to be. I'm going to figure this out, though. I'm not giving up.

Well, it's clouding up again, or as my grandma would say, it looks like it's going to "clabber up" and rain again. That's the same grandma who would describe a hard, heavy rainstorm as "a frog-strangler."

Guess I'd better go feed my little friend, and have an early lunch myself. I brought half of my lunch home yesterday (chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes, squash casserole and fried green tomatoes) and intended to have the rest for dinner last night, but just wasn't hungry and only nibbled at it. So, I'll have the last of it for lunch today. It's a good thing I like leftovers! Tonight is bunco night, and the hostess for tonight always has a really good hearty soup or a casserole and a good salad and dessert, so I won't need much lunch. Have a blessed day, friends. --Romeena

Prayers for Boo for safe travels and sane visits. And for MDC as he prepares for his surgery. We love you buddy.

Romeena, glad you are getting some rain. We could sure use some. It has been as dry as one of the Rev. Breens sermons here this summer. They had some good rain down south, but it never found its way this far north. In fact they are turning our secondary water off on October 1st this year instead of the 15th.

Been watching a lot of Adam-12's as of late. Pretty good watching. I know at some point Helen Crump starts dating Pete Malloy. She must have had a thing for men in uniform. I don't remember her being snotty in A-12, so maybe she got it out of her system I Mayberry. Sure have seen a lot of TAGS folks in it though.

Well best go get my paperwork done and call this week over.

When asked why, tell them they make your feet hurt when you stand for the National Anthem. HA! I wished I had any NIKE shoes. I'd do it. But truth be, me and NIKE don't get along. I have tried over the years different NKE running shoes and they just are not a good fit for me.

September 08, 2018 - Msg 110611: Good morning, porch! It's still raining here, had a slow, steady soaker that lasted over an hour already. It's stopped right now, but the sky looks like a collection of bruises, so I expect we'll see some more. No, MDC, the rain didn't shut down the bunco party. Takes more than a little water to scare the Bunco Babes.

Asa, chicken fried chicken is simply chicken, usually a boneless and flattened "chest", or sometimes the tenders. Instead of whatever usual way of frying chicken you use, you dip it into the same batter that would be used on chicken fried steak, and deep-fry it. It's good! Like chicken fried steak, it's usually served with mashed potatoes and milk gravy.

I like to eat at the Cotton Patch Diner, because they serve fried green tomatoes, and that's something you can't get just any old place. Maybe in the Deep South, but Texas is between being a Southern and a Western state. We have a lot of old South traditions, our language, customs and our food has a heavy Southern influence, but we also have a lot of Mexican foods. I'm not sure what Western foods would look like, but I'm sure they have influenced us as well. Texas is something of a cultural melting pot, and our people usually are not afraid to try new things. For example, Thai food is very popular here, and even in Irving we have several good Thai restaurants. I'm sure Dallas has dozens. Indian food is big here, though not as well-liked as Thai. I think a lot of people avoid Indian food because the curry sort of, well, "stays with you" for a long time. When someone has eaten in an Indian restaurant, you know it when they walk in the door! It's much more pungent than Italian, or even Mexican food.

Speaking of food, I have a gripe, and I registered it with the store manager at the Kroger where I always shop. Kroger is pushing harder and harder to get people to buy the store brand. I have always bought Daisy brand sour cream (I eat a lot of sour cream) and now they're only carrying it in a tiny tub, and it's on the top shelf of the dairy case, just out of my reach. I have to ask someone to get it for me. The Kroger brand, however, comes in an assortment of sizes, and is at eye-level. I picked up one of each, and went up front and asked to speak to the manager. He arrived, and I very politely told him I had a concern about Kroger's obvious efforts to force people to buy Kroger brand. Then I showed him the two containers of sour cream and asked him to read the ingredients. Kroger - Cultured Cream, Skim Milk, Whey, Modified Corn Starch, Cultured Dextrose, Gelatin, Sodium Phosphate, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Sodium Citrate, Calcium Sulfate and Locust Bean Gum. Daisy - Cultured Cream. Period. As his jaw dropped, I asked him which he'd rather feed to his family. He said he saw my point, but then began to explain that he had no control over it, etc. I told him I fully understood, as my husband has managed a major chain grocery store in San Antonio for four years, but I just wanted to make someone aware that the public is watching what the store chain is doing, and we don't like it.

Well, guess I'll go have some lunch. Some tomato basil soup with a dollop of my beloved Daisy sour cream sounds good. Have a blessed day. --Romeena

September 08, 2018 - Msg 110612: Hmmm. "My husband has managed a major chain grocery store? Has? How did that get in there? Sounds like it's an ongoing thing, and obviously that's not true. I don't think there are grocery stores in heaven. --Romeena

September 08, 2018 - Msg 110613: Romeena, I use the Daisy brand my self because it has no corn starch in it, which I am sensitive too. Being an ingredient reader I have noticed something as of late. It would seem that more and more I am seeing potato starch or wheat starch used in processed foods instead of corn starch. Makes it a lot better for me. The other starches don't bother me like corn starch.
Thanks for the response to the chicken fry chicken. Now I want some.
Your talking about Indian food staying with you, years ago I was a maint. electrician for a major cosmetic manufacture. There is an Air Force Base close by, and this company would hire a lot of the Airmen's wives to work there, many who were from Korea. Well these gals, who were just beautiful, would come into work at 6:00 in the morning, having just eating kimchee, oh my goodness, that was tough. I mean the smell was so strong it would get my eyes burning sometimes. And it stayed with them all day long. I'm sure it was tasty, but I don't know how you could eat something that smelled like that.

Well on that note I think I'll go mow the grass. So far my repair has worked. :)

Frankie

September 08, 2018 - Msg 110616: Kimchee? Oh, yes! I've heard it described as pungent, strong-smelling, garlicky, and many other adjectives, but I think the best one is just plain old stinky. My Dale was in Korea for a year, after the cease-fire, and he said one time he was in Osan, on a bus filled with Koreans. He said the smell was so oppressive that he just got off the bus and walked! He also said that once he and some of the other guys in his barracks (a Quonset hut) were talking with their Korean houseboy and someone mentioned that all Koreans seemed to smell of kimchee. The Korean guy laughed and said Koreans think all Americans smell like sour milk. I told that story to a friend who had been in Viet Nam, and he said the Vietnamese say the same thing, that Americans smell like sour milk. Isn't that strange? I wonder what causes that?

As for the Daisy brand of sour cream, it's just so much better than any other brand I've tried. It's rich and thick, great texture and flavor. That awful Kroger stuff is slick and slimy. Many people buy the store brands because they're a few cents cheaper than the name brands, but they don't realize that they're not comparing apples to apples. I was shopping one day, and planning to make some English pea salad, and knew I had at least one can of DelMonte peas at home. I saw the Kroger brand, for about ten cents less, and decided it would be a good time to see what they were like, since they wouldn't be served alone, would be mixed with a good brand. I opened both cans, with the same weight printed on the label. The difference was, the DelMonte can had peas all the way to the top, and the Kroger brand had at least an inch of water before you ever saw any peas. I did a similar comparison with green beans a while back, and found the same thing. Incidentally, for green beans, I won't buy anything but the Glory brand. They are absolutely delicious. In fact, Eloise's granddaughter, who says she doesn't like green beans, not only likes them, but she requests them when I'm cooking for the family. They taste like what my grandma and my mom used to make. It's a big can, with a mostly orange label, and in our stores they're usually on the bottom shelf in the canned veggie aisle. Try them - you will definitely like them.

Well, back to TV. Blessings! --Romeena

What a crazy final tennis match for the US Open. Serenna really lost her cool. The umpire last night had enough. Most umpires just try to ignore it and let it go. But rules are rules if they want to enforce them. I really felt sorry for the young lady that won the match and she was clearly the best player last night.

Just a update on the house next door to us that was the drug house. It has all been cleaned out and months of work to restore it. We had a nice quiet couple purchase the house. It has been so nice and the neighborhood is so much better. Not all that drug traffic, that was kind of scary. Now workers are getting the house across the street from us ready to sale. I sure hope we get another good buyer in the neighborhood. It has been like a different neighborhood since the one family was kicked out by the city. It has been a lot of entertainment for us watching all this workers.

Mom is doing ok and is playing on her computer now. She loves playing the games, and it is so nice seeing her get back on her computer.

Checking in before starting the mountain of chores I have to do today. Have to go back to work tomorrow so plenty to do.

Our trip to visit the mom in law was...interesting. I guess things went as well as expected. There was a little drama but nothing major. What was difficult to deal with was that the two sisters in law have diva-tendencies..if you know what I mean. They didn't seem to be able to do anything for themselves or take a lot of initiative. Sean helped me a lot so I was glad he was on the trip. Sadly, my sister in law with the real addiction issues is obviously brain=damaged by now and has the mentality of about a 9 year old. She needs help with everything and doesn't seem to be able to reason normally. I was really glad that she kept her cool and didn't throw any tantrums or anything, even when baited by her mom. So, all in all, it was ok. I don't feel like I will be taking them again, though, unless it is an emergency situation concerning their mom. If vicki needs to see her mom, it is time for her adult children to step up and take her.

It's been raining here and it sure is nice. It keeps the temperatures down a bit. I cant wait for a cool front.

better get to the laundry.

I'm giving him at least half the class time, and he's doing well. Takes a big load off of me!

All you East coast folks, you're in my prayers! Possum, so sorry your visit to Wyoming got messed up. Is there any way you could drive inland to an airport that's open, and fly from there? It would cost a bit more - gasoline, parking fees, whatever, but it might work. You could maybe use rental cars for the driving part, which would be offset by the parking fees. I don't know much about those, but I know my David uses rentals from time to time and says in certain situations they can be cheaper than using your own car. Just a thought...

Well, got to get off this computer and get cleaned up a little. I'm going with eleven other old gals from SS, we're going to a movie this afternoon, at a big theater in Dallas. It's a film made of the stage production of "Moses" that is presented in a "Sight and Sound" theater in Branson, MO. I've seen "Noah" in a S&S theater, and it's an experience you never forget. I'm interested in just how a movie of the live play will compare, but I'm glad they're making the movies. Not everyone has the opportunity to visit a S&S theater, and the movies will be much more accessible. Anyway, good friends and all - it should be a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Have a great day, friends. You coastal people, keep your hatches battened down, stock up on necessities, (don't forget to store some clean water) and be careful! --Romeena

September 13, 2018 - Msg 110652: Hey y'all- things are looking better for my area with this storm,as it has weakened to a CAT 2. Thank you, Lord! It will drift slowly over SC,and it looks like the track will be above where I am,so that's another good thing. If it comes in below us,then there's a bigger chance of damaging winds. Should be like a low scale tropical storm for us,so our concerns are mainly with hoping the power stays on. It's DANG hot down here,y'all! Just keep praying for the Carolinas-this is gonna be one messy, soggy weekend.

Thanks,Ro,but we just went ahead and cancelled our plans. My sister was going with me and she lives down near Charleston. We would worry ourselves crazy if we'd left today and this storm was coming. Hopefully, we can reschedule the trip to Wyoming in the next few weeks, before the Wyoming weather gets bad.
Weather- ugh!

Ready for this thing to be over with! I reckon MDC is saying the same thing and my thoughts and prayers are with him. Will check in as long as power stays on-y'all take care!

September 13, 2018 - Msg 110657: Well, all I can say is "Wow. Just Wow!" The movie was exactly what I said it was - a filming of the live production on the stages of the Sight and Sound Theater in Branson, and possibly in the other S&S theater in Lancaster, PA. The film is being shown across the country on a limited release basis. From what I've been told, the last opportunity to see it will be on Sept. 15. Just Google "Sight and Sound Moses" for more information. It is absolutely and definitely worth your while to search it out and go see it. You will be amazed. --Romeena

September 13, 2018 - Msg 110658: HELLO ALL! Everything went well with my pre-op tests. One was an arterial gas blood draw. Only had one other one years ago. A painful stick, but as the nurse said, nothing like tomorrow! ha
Anyway, I am all set to go. Many are praying, just as I know that many were asking the the good Lord to "calm the winds" of Flo, and He did!

I showed my wife how to get on here, so she will give a short report to you all on Saturday. I watched recovery on youtube and it is definitely a six to seven day affair in the hospital. I hope to write again in perhaps two weeks.
Y'all act like somebody whilst I'm re-cupping, and I'll catch ya on the flip-flop.
Prayers for everyone here, for the Carolinas, the country, and the world! :)
Love ya, Steve MDC

September 14, 2018 - Msg 110659: We love you back Steve and prayers and good thoughts are with you as you endure the things you are dealing with today, and coming days. Bless your heart, and I truly mean bless your HEART. :)

September 14, 2018 - Msg 110661: Good afternoon, porch. Prayers for our MDC, as he is undergoing the cardiac procedure. My prayer is for the surgeons, that their skills will be sharp, their hands steady, and that all goes well. Then I pray that recovery will be as comfortable as possible, and successful. We need our Steve, our MDC, back on the porch soon!

Thank God for the diminished powers of the hurricane. It's still a bad storm, but nothing like it could have been.

The view from my window this morning is kind of funny. My hibiscus(es?) in the biggest flowerbed have not bloomed since spring, and the plants are leggy and tattered. I probably should have pruned them back when they quit blooming. Well, this morning, there is one huge flower, on a long stem, waving about a foot above the top of the row of plants. Just one big white flower, with a deep red eye, bobbing above all those ratty-looking plants. Immediately, a line from an old song came to mind -- "I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch, and all I do is cry all day." Hahaha.

Well, guess I'll go play with Toye Starr a while, and cuddle her afterward. Maybe we'll take a nap. It's a good day for it. Quiet, cloudy, nothing happening. Yep, a nap sounds good! --Romeena

September 14, 2018 - Msg 110662: With this storm upon us, I'm mixed up on what day it is,and just remembered that MDC undergoes his heart procedure today. My prayers are with him and will be awaiting to hear an update from Mrs. MDC.
As for Florence, nothing much going on here yet-a few wind gusts, gloomy skies, but no rain yet. We're under a Tropical Storm Warning-been through worse,so will ride this one out. Hope the power stays on!! Some parts of SC are going to have some mighty big troubles, same with NC,so please say some prayers for the folks in those areas. Thanks,y'all!

Hoping we will get an update on MDC today-y'all take care & I'll check in later.

September 15, 2018 - Msg 110665: Checking in - no word on MDC as yet, I see. I'm sure his wife has her hands pretty full right now. So glad no one has had any horrible weather yet - especially Possum, who appeared to be right in the path of the hurricane. Prayers continue. --Romeena

September 15, 2018 - Msg 110669: Oh, things are still good here at my rock,y'all- light rain, some nice breezes out there, but that's about it. Not expecting any problems,so thank goodness for that. Well, problems ARE coming- all that rain that fell in NC (please keep them in your prayers,as they got hit hard in some spots) will come down into our rivers here in SC and we'll have flooding throughout the state. It doesn't flood in my immediate area, but it has and may flood about 15 miles from here. Me & mine will be okay,though-no threat to any of us. Thanks for all of the concern and prayers!

September 15, 2018 - Msg 110670: Atta boy MDC, and thank you Lord for blessing him and thank you Celile for the report. Prayers continue for you both.

Possum, so glad you are ok and the rock is in tact. It could have been so much worse. Again, thanks to the Lord for his blessings.

Frankie, so good to have you back posting. I hope your Mom is still doing well.

New Neighbor, I hope all is well with you and your family.

Romeena, How is Toye Starr doing? Better I hope.

Boo, Is Erin doing ok in school so far? My oldest, Mariah, started Jr. High this year. She is struggling a bit with it, but I think she will adapt. That is such a tough age. It's tough to watch them grow up sometimes.

Well off to do laundry. Then clean bathrooms. Then clean the kitchen. All in all it's a fun day. Right GF? lol
