September 15, 2018 - Msg 110671: Great news about MDC! So glad to hear it. Thanks to Cecile for the update.

Asa, Erin has A's so far but its only been 3 weeks. ha..I went to parent/teacher night this past week and all her teachers told me she was very smart and a hard worker and that they never have any trouble with her. Hope Mariah adapts well, and you are right, it is a tough age.

Been raining most of the day and Sean and I decided to go out to a local Chinese place for lunch. When it was time to go the rain was really coming down but we were parked right in front of the entrance and only had a few feet to make it to the car. As soon as we got out the door, a huge wind gust came up and before we could even get to the car doors we were saturated! It was like Mother Nature turned a fire hose on us! The waitresses were at the front door looking out and laughing at us. I guess it was a sight.

I got my fall decorations out of the attic today and put out a few things but just not in the mood yet.

Hope you all have a great evening.

I was hoping MDC might have left word, but I know he will when he is able.

GF, I am going to my other Daughters house tonight (Stacey) for a pool party so I will miss the broadcast live. Tell everyone hey for me.

I ran across this link on another TAGS board I visit and just had to put it in here. I just bet there are some Paul Harvey fans here besides me.

September 17, 2018 - Msg 110683: Good afternoon, porch. Hot and still here today. Eddie was here, pulled weeds from about 9 to 2:30, and had to quit and go pick up his little daughter. He made some serious headway in the front yard, will be back tomorrow to tackle the back yard, which looks like an ad for a disaster. All the rain we've had has just shot those weeds into overdrive. It's really making me crazy that I can't get out there and work like I used to, but I just can't. My yard has never looked like this!

Asa, I have always been a Paul Harvey fan. His commentaries were always so interesting, he had such a delightful way with words, and always that little kicker at the end. I went to the link and will have hours of Paul Harvey to listen to now! Thanks, buddy.

G-F, that water-wheeler looks like tons of fun. I sent the link to my son, and will send it to my daughter and SIL also, as they both have lake access, and my son also has a pool. Great idea!

Well, guess I'll go get in my dry land wheelerette and make a lap for my little rotten doggie, and watch a little TV. Blessings, all. --Romeena

September 17, 2018 - Msg 110684: Romeena, I am sorry you cant do what you used to do. I am also very thankful that you can do what you can do. :) Thank you, Lord.

It is been one of those sickeningly hot days here with the humidity off the charts since all that rain. Now it is sweltering and the mosquitos are like something out of African Queen! You cant even be outside with mosquito spray right now. Dreadful creatures can sure make life miserable! With all the standing water here in my little town, the mosquitos are going to be around for awhile.

I am hoping we will have some sort of a cool front soon but it may be awhile. I did start putting out some of my fall decorations this weekend while it was rainy. They seem pretty silly today in this heat.

Well, tomorrow is a work day for me and that's ok. I will probably get some rest there. lol

Hope MDC is doing ok and healing without any problems. Prayers continue. I miss seeing him the porch, for sure, but it wont be long till he is back.

A big hello to Frankie. I hope your Mom is still doing well.

GF, I keep hoping MDC will post soon. I'm sure he will when he is able. I hope he hasn't had a setback.

Boo, I am sorry your days are so hot and humid. We are seeing the turn in the season here finally. Only supposed to hit the 70's tomorrow with a 10% humidity level. Our problem is the wildfires that continue to burn. The air is just horrible. There are two separate fires burning right now that combined have burned over 90,000 acres. I hope your day back at work got you some rest. :)

Romeena, somehow I just knew you were a Paul Harvey fan also. I surely do miss his positive news reports.

Speaking of news reports, have any of you seen the clip (I think it was CNN) that shows a reporter in the middle of Florence, and he seems to be barely able to stand with the wind blowing so hard as he dutifully reports. Then the camera pans back a little and you see two people in shorts walking by behind him with out any problems staying upright. HA! I bet the cameraman got chewed out big time. But the reporter should be up for an Oscar. lol

Guess I best get rolling. Starting to prep stuff for another winter season. Oh boy!

PLEASE be aware of your surroundings, who is behind you and if there are men and/or women standing in scattered places.

Makes no sense to put up with another winter if I don't have to. For the first time since I was a kid, I can sit at my window and watch the snow drop without worrying about getting called in for snow removal. That just makes me glow. HA!

Hope that we'll hear from MDC before much longer. Prayers for him.

Rescheduled the trip to Wyoming and unless another hurricane shows up to mess things up again, will be flying out of Charleston on Thursday- can't wait!

That was Mike Seidel of The Weather Channel in that video. In his defense, TWC said that he had been up since 1 AM, was exhausted, and was having a hard time standing up because he was in wet grass, whereas the people walking effortlessly behind him were on pavement. Whatever! I don't believe the Anderson Cooper ditch thing was during Hurricane Florence, but was something he did during Hurricane Ike that resurfaced. Still.. fake news!

Well, guess that's about it for now. Hope everyone has a good weekend and Happy Fall ( it starts tomorrow!) !!

September 21, 2018 - Msg 110700: Had to call a plumber out to the house today. I noticed some damp dirt under the house while putting out some mice bat. I always keep bait under mom`s house just to be safe. The man came out and said it was coming from the toilet. Need to put a new wax ring under the toilet. Got that fixed and I am glad it was nothing more serious. About three months ago I had to have the sewer line under the house replaced, it was full of cracks. I guess this old houses are getting old like me. We have creeks in our bodies. Glad I did not call Mr. Wheeler it would have taken him a week to get this done. lol
Getting a little warm out today. Should be around 93. Maybe this is our last heat wave, before you know it will be cool and raining.
You all have a Mayberry Day.

September 22, 2018 - Msg 110701: Good Saturday morning all.
I have already got my shopping done for the week. Now it is time to mow the grass. Then I need to do some winter prep stuff done around the house. Frankie's post reminded me that I have got to do some detective work on mouse entrances. Last winter for the first time I had some mice in my house. I hate the things. They are just like bats without wings. Anyway, I have got to try and find out where they got in. And then nip it! Thanks for the reminder Frankie. With our cooler weather at night, they will be trying to get in again to my warm space. Miserable little beggars!
And if you had called Mr. Wheeler to fix your toilet (terlit as A. Bunker calls it), not only would it have taken a week, you would have ended up doing it while your Mom served him lemonade. lol Glad it was just a wax ring issue.

Have fun on your trip Possum. Are you flying in to Salt Lake again? We need to hook up one of these times when you head out west here to "Big Sky Country". (That's actually Montana, but all of us in this neck of the mountains lay claim to it) And of course there is Green River Wyoming, and you are all aware of the famous Green River Ordinence. :)

I hope everyone has a great day.

September 22, 2018 - Msg 110702: Good morning, porch! Cloudy and drippy here this morning, after a big old rainstorm last night, with rolling thunder and a real downpour. So glad to see it. The cloud cover must have been very heavy, as it knocked out my Dish network connection for about three hours. No problem, I have tons of stuff on DVR that I can watch. That's the only drawback with Dish over the cables, but I like everything else enough that it's not a deal-breaker, and it doesn't happen often. It has to be a really heavy storm before it interferes, and we don't get many of those.

Asa, you are a caution! I am so glad to hear that you're making plans to retire. You have earned it, for sure, and you just can't imagine how great it will be. That first morning, when you can reach over and silence your clock, and just go back to sleep, will be pure bliss. Don't expect to be bored - trust me, the whole world will find things for you to do, but you will have the option to refuse if you wish. Then there's the biggest reward of all - you will be able to spend all the time you want/need to spend with your dear wife, with no clock to punch anywhere. There are some great days ahead for you, my friend.

Mice and rats! I've got a dilemma. I just spent $225 two weeks ago, to have my a/c fixed because the mice or rats had chewed the wires where they enter the house from the compressor, and they had to re-route the entry to the top of the wall. They were unable to just splice into the original wires, as they were chewed partly in the wall, and they couldn't get enough wire to work with. Then, to add insult to injury, I sat here at my window a few days ago and actually saw two small rats run out of a fenceline flowerbed, across a small patch of lawn, and dive beneath an 1100 lb boulder that is a focal point in the yard. I could use my humane live trap and hope to catch them, but most likely, I would catch a squirrel, which would die of fright and panic. Poison is not an option either, for the same reason, unless I can find the entry to their burrow under the boulder. I could stuff some pellets down in there, as the squirrels don't typically burrow under things. They do explore all perimeters, though, so the pellets would have to be deep under the rock. What I need here is a big long-toothed cat! A hungry one, not somebody's fat and lazy pet. So far, to my knowledge, they have never made it inside the house, but I suppose it's just a matter of time.

Possum, I'm so glad you got to reschedule your trip! Go, have fun, enjoy, and Godspeed!

I, too, would like to hear from MDC. Maybe I'll email him and see if that stirs up a reaction. I surely do hope he's okay.

Well, guess I'd better go feed my little furkid. We slept very late this morning, so I would imagine she's hungry. I'm not, will probably just have a glass of V8. Love the stuff! Blessings, friends. --Romeena

September 22, 2018 - Msg 110703: Asa & Romeena, I try to get the rats under the house before they try to make it up to the house. I started this when the bad house next door had a big problem and did nothing about it. They were more interested in there drugs. But now we have a nice young couple there. I have done this for years. Romeena sorry to hear about your wires and the cost. Those mice and rats can cause a lot of problems. I know someone that had there car in the garage and later found out the wires under the hood were all chewed up by the mice or rats. They seem to come around during the cooler weather. We need to go on Rat Patrol.
Frankie

September 22, 2018 - Msg 110704: Hey, porch! I emailed MDC, and received a reply. Since I told him in my email that if he chose to reply to it, I would pass it on to the porch, I'm sure he won't mind if I just copy it here:
HI,

MOOOOOOOO! Operation was a success!

Just got out of hospital on Friday, and got home at 5 PM, then

slept for 12 hours straight!

Hospitals are so noisy! Feeling good today.

I will get to the porch soon, just now looking over emails.

I dont have a smart phone, hate the things, actually,

and didnt want my laptop at the hospital.

Anyway, thanks for all the ANSWERED prayers, and now we

give a shout of THANKS the the triune God! (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!) 😊

Sounds to me like he's doing fine, and I think we'll hear from him personally soon. Keep up the prayers!

You know, it seems like in any situation, you end up with a trade-off, good vs bad. On the rat and mouse problem, poisons work, but they also enter the environment. They can be eaten by an unintended animal (squirrel, for example) or the dying mouse can be eaten by a cat, and thus the cat gets poisoned as well, though possibly not fatally, if the mouse has started to metabolize the poison. Feral cats are a blessing, in that they keep the vermin population down, but they also kill songbirds and even squirrels. Also, they can become a problem themselves, if they're not caught in a TNR program (trap, neuter, release) at some point. I saw a thing on TV where over 75 feral cats and kittens were removed from a neighborhood. Imagine having that in your backyard! Just the flea load alone is mind-boggling. Seems like there's always something to keep you scratching your head. (No pun intended.)

Well, guess I'm off to dreamland in a little while. Blessings, everyone. --Romeena

September 23, 2018 - Msg 110711: HI ALL, It is GREAT to be back! Recovery is going very well, but
I slept 12 hours straight again last night after 7 days in that
NOISY hospital!
My room was in a circular "pod" of rooms
and one could hear everything going on in the
other rooms, and in the center nurses station!!!
(so much for HIPPA!)
Buzzers, bells, bed alarms, a fire alarm, IV alarms, announcements
for "stat whatever", patients discharged and admitted
during the night, ETC, ETC! Recuperation? No way!
Two nights I was awaken every hour for...
vitals... 3 times,
Blood draws,
Glucose checks... finger sticks and squeezes,
a chest X-ray,
Some sort of a@sessment
and a respiratory test (blowing into a tube).
The other nights I was only awaken Five times!!

This is nothing personal to our wonderful nurses here,
it's just that I dont understand being rousted every hour.

Oh well, all is done, all went good, I am now on the mend, and
I thank God continually.

Had a home health nurse come to the house TODAY to check up on me.
She was astounded at my progress!
Actually, the surgeon told me that I should have had this heart fix done
BEFORE the hip replacement, and both recoveries would have gone better.
It is amazing what can be done!
Well, enuf about me. Glad all made it thru the storms.
Hey to Spot, frankie, possum, boo, and all.
Happy for ASA and his impending retirement!
Thanks again for all the prayers!!!
Love ya,

September 23, 2018 - Msg 110712: Oops, sorry, I forgot RO and GF!!

September 24, 2018 - Msg 110713: Good late evening, porch. MDC, it's great to hear from you. Brother, I can sympathize with you from a patient's point of view, since I've been on both sides of those side rails. With all the surgeries I've had, I know very well what it feels like to be awakened every two hours for vital signs, and to have lab come in for a blood draw just as you get back to sleep from the 4 a.m. vitals, etc. It's annoying, and you're right, you get no rest. Unfortunately, there's just no way to fix it. The docs want those lab results on the chart when they start making rounds around 7, and they want current numbers, not yesterday's, so that means a 4 a.m. draw is necessary. After a big heart surgery, you can safely bet that they're going to want vitals every 2 hours for about 48 hours, and probably every fifteen minutes for the first 4 hours or so. Radiology has to do a lot of their portable chest xrays at night, because the daytime staff is bogged down with outpatient procedures, and can't spare someone to go off to a floor to do a portable chest. And on it goes - there are reasons, but those reasons don't help much when you're the one being awakened. I'm just glad you're home and can get some rest.

That poor little possum! Being swung by its tail like that probably wasn't too pleasant, (of course, their tail is prehensile and they do hang by it voluntarily, but that's another story.) I just hope someone took it and released it in the wild somewhere. I'd be happy to have it in my backyard - they eat all sorts of insects, including grub worms! I haven't seen my little friend in a while, I hope it just moved on and didn't get run over. It used to leave little finger-sized holes in the ground, where it had dug up a grub, and the next rain or watering would fill the holes back in. They're no threat - you leave them alone and they'll leave you alone.

Well, guess I'll head for the ironing board. Toye Starr is getting impatient, she wants to go to bed. Being only seven inches tall, she can't get up on the bed without my help. Yes, I've tried stairs, have two of them stored away, but they're not high enough. My bed is quite high, and she can't get up or down, but she insists on sleeping up there with me. If I don't put her up there, she tugs at the covers until I get the idea. It must be awful to be so little. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

Hopefully it found a nice rock to hide under....Amen (our) Possum?...

September 24, 2018 - Msg 110715: Good Monday morning all, and so good to see you posting again MDC. Glad all went well and you are back home and resting. Thank you Lord.

What day you heading out GF? Safe travels and all that. Pack some extra sawdust in case your gears wear out. And be sure to pull over every 20 minutes to allow your machine to rest. :)

Romeena, I would imagine with your nursing background, it helps you as a patient in knowing what they are doing and why they are doing it. I have been blessed in that I have only twice I have had to stay overnight in a hospital. Once when I was around 8, I broke my right arm in two places and my left arm in one place. After setting them and casting them, the Doctor decided to keep me in the hospital overnight. Probably a good thing because I remember around 4 in the morning waking up to one of my thumbs hurting like mad. I summoned a nurse and told her about it. She realized the cast was a little tight around the thumb, so someone else came and did a little trimming on the cast. The worst thing I remember about that was they used ether to put me out when they set my arms. Talk about a horrible way to anesthetize you. I seriously think the stuff did me some brain damage. And to this day when I smell the stuff it makes me ill. The place I work at has a ton of diesel engines, and often times the mechanics working on those engines would have to use ether to help start them in the winter. I would get a whiff of that at times and just want to hurl. Glad they don't do that anymore, both on patients and on diesel engines.

Well off to slay the dragon. We had a dry cool front move in during the night. Currently in the upper 40's. Not expected to get above 72 today. Not trying to rub it in Boo. (well maybe just a little because in a few months when I am shivering my timbers off, you are basking in very comfortable temps) lol.

September 24, 2018 - Msg 110717: Well, Asa, I am glad you have nice temperatures if some of the rest of us cant...most of us, actually. It was very warm and humid here today with giant mosquitos. Fall in Texas. Bah Humbug.

I haven't spent much time in the hospital, either. A tonsillectomy at age 7, childbirth x2, and a hysterectomy. Not bad for 56. If you add all the days together they only amount to 9 days total.

MDC, you had your chest cracked open and a cow valve sewn in. If anyone should be monitored closely, it was you. lol I am glad you are home so you can rest and I agree with your doctor. I was thinking about the complications you had following the hip surgery and how that might have been avoided if the heart surgery had been done first. Anyway, all is well that ends well and sounds like you are on your way now.

G-F, how often do they have Mayberry Days? Seems like you just went.

Well, I was in Houston for an overnight trip this week with Erin. One of her best friends had a baby. Sad situation, but it was important to Erin and her friend that she be there for support. I had not been to Houston in awhile. That city is unbelievable. It is just constantly growing and such cultural diversity there! It is a neat place but lots of traffic and tons of people everywhere.

I wanted to mention that my friend Cinthia is now on hospice. She was continuing to get chemo, was sick from it every day and finally made the decision to stop. I don't know how long it will be but will be going to see her soon. She is now living in a lovely rv park on the river and is near her son. It is about an hour and a half drive for me, but I will make it for her. It is hard for me to think of losing her but she has been through so much. I do feel for her children, though.

September 24, 2018 - Msg 110718: MDC, it is great to see you back and sounds like you are on a good recovery. Still keeping you in my prayers. I certainly know what you are talking about with the hospital. When my Mom was in there it seemed like there was something going on all the time. You take care.
Boo, sorry to hear about your friend Cinthia. I lost a brother a year ago to cancer and it was so heartbreaking.
You all have a Mayberry Day!

September 25, 2018 - Msg 110721: Hello again!
Like those chickens who did a lot of flyin', I am doing a lot of restin'. I have started some light PT at home. A PT person will be here on Wed. to see how things are going. I am still taking percoset, but am trying to space out the dosages more and more. I lasted 9 hours between doses today. But toward the end of the ninth hour, it felt like a truck had run over my chest. OK, maybe TMI ! :)

I read back a bit and agree that that video is quite contrived! They may have even had a big fan on him, because the clothes on the guys in the background are not moving around. Who do you trust these days?

GF have fun at the Mayberry days! Now that my heart will be better, maybe I will seriously try for it next year. We'll see. Tonight's ep on ME-TV was about MR JACKSON! Love it how Barney tells him off!

BTW G-F, If you see a rock that looks like an eagle, you can name it 'Eagle Rock." haha

Well, I'm bushed. My D-Backs are out of the running, my Cards are 0 and 3, so I guess I'll just hit the hay.

THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR PRAYERS! They were indeed "felt".

September 25, 2018 - Msg 110722: Good evening, porch. Just to make myself clear, my explanation of the hospital routine in my earlier post was not really intended as a defense. As a matter of fact, when I had my back surgery about four years ago or so, I was not exactly a model patient. At the midnight vitals, I told my nurse that she could return at 4, but if she came in and woke me at 2 for vitals, I would yell into her stethoscope, and then tie it in a knot. She was a friend, so she just laughed and told me she'd see me at 2. She did, of course, because she's a good nurse and knew it was important. I put up with it, because I also knew it was important. And that's the way it goes. Annoying as all get-out, but necessary.

Boo, I'm so sorry about your friend. Sometimes it's so hard to understand why things go down the way they do, and it hurts to lose someone. I will be praying for a peaceful release for your friend, and for comfort for her family and for you.

MDC, I'm so glad you're home. We've missed you, and it's nice to know that you're back in your place and on the road to recovery. I'm betting you're going to feel better than you have in a very long time.

Very soon, my house is going to be like Fort Knox. I already have a very good, well-planned and placed security system, I have a small dog with ears like a lynx and a bark that could shatter glass when she has reason, all-night lights all around the house and in the back yard, and I have my trusty Judge. Now, because someone rang my doorbell twice on three late evenings two weeks ago, and there was no one there when I looked through the peephole, my kids have decided I need to have security cameras. Four of them. One at the front door, one above the garage door, and one at each gate into the back yard. All will be motion activated, and will turn on lights. They will also sound a little chime in the house, and I can click an app on my phone and it will display what the cameras are seeing. The captured images will be stored in the cloud for seven days, in case they're needed. I can also "answer" the doorbell and talk to the "visitor" without ever leaving my chair. Wow. I had been thinking about getting a camera at least at the front door, but they're expensive, so had abandoned the idea. The kids are doing this for me. Their dad would be so pleased and proud of them, just as I am.

Well, off to bed, and I think Toye Starr and I can sleep late in the morning. Can't think of anything that needs early morning attention, so will take advantage of that fact. Blessings, everyone. --Romeena

September 25, 2018 - Msg 110723: Happy Tuesday porch. a cloudy morning here in Northeast Tn. we are supposed to get rain the rest of the week.

MDC: its good to see you and happy you are on your way to recovery.

Mr. Maude and I had a good week. just poked around in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg and then spent a couple days in Mt. Airy.

GF: does not look like I will be making it to Mayberry Days afterall this year. Too much going on here that I need to take care of. I will miss seeing you and being a part of the activities. Hopefully, I will see you at the meet up nest July tho. You have a good time and give a full report when you get home.

Guess I better get to work now.
Everyone have great day. Prayers and blessing to all.

September 25, 2018 - Msg 110724: Good morning all.

MDC, It's so good to see you back and in the recovery mode my friend. I am curious, did your surgery get rid of the a-fib? Glad you are on the mend.

Boo, I am so sorry to read about Cinthia. Sometimes things just don't make sense to us, but we move along in faith. She is in my prayers.

GF, I missed the podcast last night. Just plum forgot about it. Have fun at M.D. and act like somebody. :)

Sorry you'll miss the event Big Maude. Life just gets busy sometimes.

Romeena, glad you are getting electronal. It's a shame we have to go to such extremes, but it is what it is. Sounds like you are doing prudent things and being proactive. Good for you.

Possum, I imagine the cooler dry weather here will feel pretty good to you. I hope you have a safe trip.

Frankie, sorry to read that about your brother. So very hard to deal with I am sure.

Well I hope everyone has a great day. I took the day off, just for the heck of it. I am finding my motivation lacking severely since deciding I was going to retire. Wonder what causes that?

Asa

September 26, 2018 - Msg 110727: G-F, That is a nice link you shared about the Mayberry Days. I enjoyed looking it over.

The Oakland A`s made the wild card. I really like watching and cheering them on. Watching them right now playing against the Mariners.

September 26, 2018 - Msg 110728: Thanks John, good to see you "rockin' more as well!
Well gang,I have WONDERFUL news! I saw the heart failure doctor (whom I have been seeing for the past year, the doc who came to see me each day in the hospital) and he said that I
am no longer considered to be a heart failure patient!!! woohoo! He and the surgeon have been
talking, and I am now off my digoxin, and I may also be able to go off coumadin soon too. I forgot to mention to you earlier that the surgeon also snipped off my atrial appendage on the heart where most of the blood coagulates, and since the valves are working right now, there would be no need for thinning the blood!! woohoo again!! Praise Jesus! :)
I am very excited to hear this after 20 years of monthly blood tests, and of watching my intake of green veggies, as they can affect coumadin levels.

BOO and RO, please dont misunderstand me either. I understand that the techs and aides have their jobs to do, and that docs like to have results when they start morning rounds; but one would think that in 2018 some sort of computer scheduling could take place where a couple of the tests could be done during one interuption. Just sayin.'
ASA, to answer your question, Yes, I am still in A-Fib. For a couple days after surgery i was in "junctional rhythm," but they told me it would revert back to a-fib because i have been in it for so long.

OK, on to other subjects like Mayberry Days! I watched Mr. McBeevie tonight. Those 12 extra hands sure do come in handy! ha It would be a good ep to show on the big screen under the stars!

Anyone else tired of the Liberty Mutual TV ads?? My goodness, any company with that much advertising money must be ripping someone off, somewhere along the line!
Glad to see Maudie, Frankie and all of you!
MEDWIN. BILL MEDWIN, please check in. I need to place a bet. :)
I see that I am reaching "novel" status here, so better sign off.

Prayers for all,
