Tis he who gives the seed.
As i walked into my garden

God's work i recognized.

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1553: GOOOOOD MORNING my porch sitting pals. I'm sorry I aint posted in a few days. But old Asa has been having a hard time. Nothin serious but very emotional. On Saturday I gave away my oldest Daughter's hand in matrimony. [great big huge sigh] One of the toughest things I ever had to do. Seems like just a few years ago she was my little babe sitting on my knee a gigglin. Now she is a beautiful 19 year old young women. What makes the whole thing bearable for me is her husband is a terrific fellow. She found herself a great husband and me a fine son. Plus they have bought a house about a mile away, so we will see them often. Sorry about ramblin on but it is therapetic. We have had company in town staying with us and our computer is in the spare bedroom so I haven't had much access to it. Thank you all for thinking of me in my absence. You guys are the best. I mean that.
I should have told you all about this sooner but this is our first to get married and I have really struggled with it. I am so close to my kids, lettin go just a little is really tough. I'm sorry for carrying on so. Thanks again for your thoughts and concerns. My company leaves tomorrow so things should be back to normal then.

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1554: Congratulations Asa or should I say congratulations to your whole family. It is nice to know that there are good dads in the world and you are one of them. You know us here on the porch - we just love to ramble. We'll be expecting to here about your future grandbabies too.
Where is Hazel this morning - she is always up by now.
Tom - what part of the country are you from. Just curious. i am glad I live in the country where I can feel relatively safe going out at midnight and checking goats. (Or go to Wal-mart without children.) That's where I am heading today.
Take care ya'll.

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1555: Congrats Asa! It IS hard to let go, isn't it? Well, glad to know she picked a 'winner'. That shows that she had good parenting.

Prayers for all those needing them...~Mrs. Wiley

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1556: Thanks to ya Mrs. Wiley and Homemaker. This porch is full of nice folks. Where is Hazel? I need my Hazel.
Prayers for your freind and their Daughter Mavis. I hope she will be o.k. in all aspects of life

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1557: Welcome back Asa and congratulations! I can remember a day about six years ago when I cried almost six hours straight. Little Opie was off to school. Lord, dont the time just fly. I reckon that it won't seem to long before Little Opie will be finding him a pretty little thing and settlin' down. Right now he thinks mostly about driving a car. Then I will be PRAYING six hours a day. This week will be a busy one for us. We have to do all the last minute things before school starts and catch up on all the laundry. I am kinda missing all my kiddos from school and I want to see how much they growed over the summer. Little Opie is "bored" and can not wait for school to commence again. I will be glad not the hear the word bored again.

Prayers for your friends Mavis! I wanta hear another incant from Hazel. That last one was a good one. Maybe one for, um, lets see. How about getting rid of head lice. That's a problem that we see a lot at school. Nothing else seems to be working. So go for it Hazel.

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1558: Well I didn't make it to Wal-mart, maybe tomorrow. I need to get to the fish store as well and buy an algae eater for my oldest son's aquarium. Busy Busy Busy
When does your school start Fun Girl - our kids don't go back until the 20th.
Have a good evening - I'm off to the goats.

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1559: Aw, Asa, I did miss you. We was pondering where you were. Did you read up on it? Some thought you went to Raleigh; one to Siler City; there was a rumor you were on a stake out; some thought you were maintaining your bullets or your tin foil collection. And Fun Girl, bless her heart, thought you was passed out on the 8th green. I myself was so distraught I could'nt even post this morning. Congratulations on your daughters wedding! Good to have you back. - Hazel

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1560: Hey to everyone. Its hot here, way above 92. Its DANG hot!

Hope everyone is keeping cool!

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1561: Hey Idelle. Hiya Hazel. Good to see you again. I went to the archives and saw all the postings. I'm glad I was missed. I do like to take some time off for my bullet maintenance, but I usually hold off till we have a Glenn Ford picture show in town. How's your weeds? Mine are sky high. Weeds 1 Asa 0. Oh well at least the crops are "kickin butt". It is so nice to see all of you again. Talk at ya later.

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1562: Hey ya'll! Our school starts up again on the 15th of August. I saw several of the kids at the library today and they asked if I was returning. I said I'd be there. I don't know if they thought that was a good thing or not. Please remember the Suter family in your prayers. One of my favorite little girls who was in 5th grade last year was in an auto accident and her father was killed and her mother paralyzed. She is physically doing okay, but my poor gal. She is such a sweet thing. One of the good ones. She and her friend would sit all during recess and talk to me. My heart is breaking for her.

Little Opie is having a friend over for one last sleep over tomorrow night. They will most likely stay up til the wee small hours playing Nintendo. Maybe we will even order pizza. That's high living in this town.

Hey Mavis did ya work up and incant for head lice yet. If ya can't think one up I guess I'll have to get the recipe HOMEMAKER uses on her goats.

Hope ya'll have a pleasant evening and a good morning tomorrow. I am with Miss Ellie, I ain't gettin' up early enough to compete with you all.

Fun Girl

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1563: I'm still studying about that incant for head lice. Looking thru books and such. Don't worry homemaker, we'll get a good one. - Nite all, Hazel

Did think up a poem though when I was out in the garden.

Ooohh no... head lice. Drat!
This is not the day for that.
Go away go away. Scat Scat Scat.
What do you think you are, a bat?
We don't mind those bat eggs none.
'cause when all is said and done;
being crazy's kind of fun!

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1564: Good Morning. Back to the grind again. - Hazel

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1565: Well Hazel - I had to edit my text or I would have beaten you to the punch. I started with the rooster crowing sound but had to edit it out. Oh well - I wouldn't want to offend anyone.
I'll post later with another exciting update of "Farm Life" - Indiana style.

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1566: *Mavis - did you find the secret salsa recipe??? at Wally's?

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1567: Morning Porch! Asa!! glad to see yer all right, didn't yer mama teach you to leave a note when you went somewhere's? Even Opie left a note when he ran away! LOL homemaker yep, I found it, must be good stuff only had 2 boxes! canned a bunch of maters last night & even tried maters & okra together. Smelled good, don't know how it will taste.
Thanks for all the prayers for Terri, I talked to her last night & it's getting worse I think, she is coming down & wanting more. continue to keep them in your thoughts. Ya'll are great at that kind of stuff.
Well the puppies are waiting!

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1568: boy my mouth took off running this morning didn't it! Reckon I can catch it before it gets me in trouble?
Jimmy, I ain't never brangin you to town again!

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1569: Mornin DEAR.... How is all today. So sorry to hear about your friends daughter Mavis. Hope and pray all is well with them.
A monumental, historic, life changing event took place for me yesterday. August 6 2001 a day that will live in infammy. I picked and dined on my first ear of my WORLD FAMOUS bodacious corn on the cob. Mercy it was goooooooooood. Ya'll drop by and get some. It's worth the drive.

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1570: got plenty of salt for that corn?

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1571: Mmmmm. I just LOVE creamed corn! Thanks a heap, Asa! ~Mrs. Wiley

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1572: I guess congratulations are in order for you again ASA - wow, you just keep having good days all the time. Send a couple ears out this way for the boys. They eat without butter or salt and sometimes they grab it before I can cook it. I told you *Mavis - that secret recipe is the best!
The school called today so I am off to work in my new room and begin to unpack my treasures. I can feel the "Miss Crump Syndrome" beginning. Good thing I am married because the sheriff doesn't look anything like Andy.

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1573: Hey there! Could I join you all on the porch? I just came in from the flower beds and need to rest a bit. Had quite a lot of slug visits this summer. Can't bare to kill 'em so I just "relocate them" to a "greener pasture" so to speak. I'm new to the neighborhood and aren't too familiar with you folks, but would enjoy some company. I Love Mayberry, couldn't ask for a better place ! auntie m~

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1574: Welcome Auntie m~!! Boy you're nice to slugs - why, you could feed a nice, fat, juicy slug to a songbird! We're glaaaaaad to have ya!
~Mrs. Wiley

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1575: Hello Mrs. Wiley and welcome to Auntie m~! Good evening all you porch sitters - I think it is getting out that "The Porch" is a happening place. I am glad to see all new faces (I consider myself a new but an oldie too) and I have loved chatting with all who come on the porch.
Well Fun Girl - my classroom isn't going to be half-bad. I am kind of pleased with my locker room situation. It is all carpeted and I have fixed myself an office in the shower room in case I get hot under the collar with either the principal or my husband I can take a shower and cool down. I might need a shower because there is no AC back there. Oh well it could be worse.
I just bought my little ones some new fish for the aquarium. They were such good helpers in my classroom today I thought they deserved a little something.
Well -must take care of all my "kids" outside.

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1576: Hey to the Porch. Reckon them slugs talk to one another, like birds do?

Yes, the ways of the *wild slug are many and wonderful...

*as opposed to your domestic slug, which is not nearly as wonderful, but easier to ensnare...

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1577: I'll bet you could snare a real whopper of a slug if you just had a piece of string! ~Mrs. Wiley

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1578: but he'd have to be a mite on the tough side to be able to knock over that rock.

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1579: Welcome Auntie-m Pull up a chair and sit a bit. Watch yer foot, I'm rockin forward. Wadoya think would happen if we gave them slugs a dose of Hazels prunes? Could be interesting.

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1580: Hi all. I'm afraid I don't feel like any joke cracking tonight. I was putting grass clippings in my water rows in the garden, and must of bent over funny and threw my back out. Now I'm walking crooked. ouch. It hurts a lot. I know at least a couple of you can relate. (I can't remember if it's Mrs. Wiley or Miss Ellie, but I know somebody else has a bad back.) I've had problems off and on with my back for years, and I guess I should be used to it. Welcome to the porch, Auntie M. Asa - save me a piece of corn. - Hazel

Opie: I had this great big juicy worm...
Aunt Bee: Opie! Not while we're eating.
Opie: Can I tell you about the SLUG?
Aunt Bee: Opie!

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1581: Aww Hazel. Them bad backs are terrible things to deal with. I ruptured a disk in my lower back about 4 years ago, so I can relate to your pain. I will not let no surgeon get near me if I can help it. I've heard to many horrer stories. In fact my doc said surgery would only give me a 1in4 chance of it gettin any better. Bad odds if you ask me. Take it easy, relax, watch some Andy tapes, and leave the weedin to your hubby. Hope you feel better soon.

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1582: Well Homemaker, I am glad to hear that your classroom isn't gonna be half bad. The speech room at our school is about an 8x8 room and is located right next to the boiler room. YUCK!!!
We have our staff meeting on Monday and a potluck dinner at the home of one of the teachers on this Friday, and then on Thursday, I have a staff meeting at the YMCA for the Before School Care program. I have got to get used to getting up with the roosters, but I will say that it surely will be a struggle.

Oh Hazel honey, I know how those bad backs are. I had a disc removed ten years ago and I can't say that it improved the quality of my life. Course the doctor told me to get my weight down to 130 and I will tell you right now that has not happened. They say though that Vitiman C every 5-6 hours is supposed to really help and use ice instead of heat when you are in pain.

As far as the slugs go, I heard a story from my old granny about how to keep slugs out of your garden. Just pour a beer around the borders of your garden and they will stay away. They will not even cross a line of beer. Don't ask me why or how, but they say it works.

Welcome to you auntie m. We hope that you will make yourself to home here.

Fun Girl

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1583: Mornin Fun Girl Sounds like summer vacation is about to end fer ya. Gettin up with the roosters will take some gettin used to. Them slugs must be opposed to hard drink I reckon.
Hope your'e doin o.k. this a.m. Hazel. Fun Girl is right about ice instead of heat, though it don't sound as nice.
Where is Mavis at now? Hope one of them puppies didn't attack her.
Well gotta run. Big meetin in the big city all day for me. Staying awake is a big challange. Later

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1584: Mornin' Porch. The back is a little better today, I'm sitting here leaning against an ice pack as we speak. I'm gona try that beer trick tonight even thought I don't have a slug problem. One beer for me, one for the slug... - Hazel

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1585: I tried that beer trick with the slugs last night. This morning I heard one say to another "How you doin'?" and the other one said "You don't wanna know."

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1586: Poor Hazel! You take it easy now, ya hear? I don't see how a slug of beer could hurt none - give her a try! Hey to Homemaker, Asa, *Mavis and anyone I may have missed! :-)
~Mrs. Wiley

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1587: Good morning everyone!

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1588: Too funny, Bud! Hey to the porch! ~Dež~
"This cider's turned hard!"

(Font check: Off)

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1589: Heard the slugs here saying "mill" "her" "light" - must of been the neighbors slugs though. We are not into anything alcoholic around this place. A fun time for me is a nice glass of Co-Cola on crushed ice. Nothing better than that!
Good afternoon to everyone - been out with the goats this morning. They are hot, we are hot, all God's chillun must be hot. The weatherman is promising some cool air for the week-end. I hope so - this is almost unbearable.
Hazel - I hope your feeling a might better. I bet some elixir will help you better than any beer. Don't drink too much though unless you know how to play the piano.
Howdy to the rest :-} you all know your names!

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1590: Homemaker I think that you are right, maybe Hazel needs to get her a bottle of Colonel Harvey's Elixir and stay on that ice pack. Give a shot of elixer to the slugs, ya never know, that may do the trick.

Later on!
Fun Girl

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1591: Just wanted to say hey to everybody. I've been so busy I haven't posted, or even read any posts, in weeks. I hope everyone is getting along okay.

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1592: O'Malley!!

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1593: Well Fun Girl - it looks like we won't be going to the state fair to show after all. The heat has really taken a toll on our animals and they have lost some of the weight they need to be good show goats. It has just been so hot they can't eat. Oh well - we'll be in goat shows this fall. The boys were looking forward to it but they will have their chance later in the fall. We plan on attending anyway - my nephew is in the tractor showmanship contest. So we will go to support him and to look at all the other goats.
Hello O'Malley!

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1594: O'Malley? I thought he was in Detroit? About those slugs, it's bad enough that we have em, but now they're all gassed. I suppose we'll have to give them sobriety tests and hold up little bitty jump ropes for them. Better get read up on our verses. "Call for the doctor. Call for the nurse. Call for the lady with the alligator purse." - Hazel

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1595: Asa I'm still here, matter of fact I did get attacked by one of them puppies I was groomin yesterday, not too bad tho, nailed me in the hand & it is pretty swollen & sore today. (ever try to type with a finger 2x it's normal size??) Anyways, reckon I'll live, it ain't never killed me before, so don't reckon it will this time. Getting bit comes with the territory when ya groom puppies for a living, just wish I didn't have to try to groom Cujo!
Hey to everyone.
Barney, that dog don't like that whistle

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1596: i wana meet jim nabors and andy griffith

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1597: Hey Folks...just dropping in to say "hey." Everythings Mayberry.

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1598: Hey folks! Last night Little Opie and Johnny Paul Jason had a sleep over, only there wasn't much sleeping going on. They played games and watched videos and ate, which now is their favorite hobbie. I do declare that if I had two boys I'd go broke trying to feed them. Went by the school today to say hey to the office girls and fill out the yearly paperwork. It sure was good to see folks again.

Hey Hazel, is a gassed slug anything like a loaded goat? How's your back feeling?
"Gimme my pills, I need my pills!"

Fun Girl

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1599: Howdy all. Mavis that sounds like it smarts. Guess its part of the job though. I think it....BITES hehehehe. Sorry, could'nt resist that one.

August 09, 2001 - Msg 1602: Morning porch. I'm up with the roosters again. Gotta go to work early to make up for yesterday when I only worked half a day. (Had to come home early so's I could take my pills, my pills!) The back is much better today, still crooked and can't walk a straight line, but getting better. Soon I'll be jumpin rope with the slugs. - Hazel

August 09, 2001 - Msg 1603: Mercy, where are my manners? Forgot to say thanks for all the kind thoughts for my bad back. You all are wonderful... sniff just great people... honk good friends... (I hate it when I get over emotional.) - Hazel

August 09, 2001 - Msg 1604: I know you must be feelin better Hazel. You're up with them roosters again. Glad to hear it. How is everyone else doing? Hows your hand mavis? And how are you Mrs. Wiley? LOTS of file boxes to tote and not a man in sight. Barney, ain't you got some filin' to do? I suspect by tomorrow I'll have a back like Hazel's. Hey Leon, iffin your company needs a pretty gal to set in the front window and hold customer's hands, I'm your gal! (actually, I design websites and do computer graphics). You ever need a good web designer, you just holler! (

My hand is not near as sore as it was Asa thanks for asking, used my Mamaw's old tyme make it feel better recipe on it & tho it hurts getting it done, it sure makes it feel better the next day. Been canning most of the day & got more to do tomorrow. Wish me luck!
Slow down, what's yer hurry?

August 09, 2001 - Msg 1614: Stopped by school to pay book rental today. The paint fumes in there was so thick you could've cut em with a kerosene cucumber. Sorry folks, I am dog tired and can not be witty and charming under these circumstances.

Had to go to Mt. Pilot to fetch us home a new washer machine. My old one just gave up the ghost.
That sweet hubby of mine let me go in and pick the one that I liked best. I got a Kenmore. If you all have had negative experiences with that there brand, please don't tell me. I just don't think that my poor heart could take it.

We have six days and counting until school starts. I am sure that I will be in the office writing receipts for bookrental and such, even before the classroom doors open.

It's a dirty job, but somebody's gotta do it.
Fun Girl

August 09, 2001 - Msg 1615: Hi All. Will it look like we may git some rain here tonight or in the morne.
It ben to hot you no it winpeople go crazy?
Mavis maybe the puppie was to hot and he take it out on you by attacking.
Homemaker, Ilive in Ohio if you like I can send you a postcard from here.
School start on the 23 .
Dwell on the Gladness.
Life is too short
to dwell on my sorrows,
to harbour tomorrows.
Life is too short
to dwell on my pain,
to play and re-play
some vengeful refrain.

Life is too sweet
to waste precious minent,
in nursing resentment,
self-righteousness in it.
Then, let me not dwell
on life's sorrow and sadness,
O Lord, let me think
of life's blessing, with gladness!

August 09, 2001 - Msg 1616: Hey to the Porch! Such goin's on, such goin's on... *Mavis is gettin' mauled by Cujo and havin' to type with fat fingers, Auntie M's got slugs and ever'body's givin' her advice on how to get 'em gassed, Asa is pickin' his corn and eatin' it right in front'a ever'body (I wonder how many tech support calls have been made this week to find the cure for slobber on the keyboard?), Hazel is walkin' crookid after spreadin' grass around her garden (you always gotta be different, huh Hazel? Ever'body else gives their slugs beer, but you gotta go and try to give 'em... somethin' else), Fun Girl and homemaker are gettin' ready for school (I guess homemaker's a teacher when she ain't makin' a home), O'Malley ain't in Deeetroit like ever'body thought, ~~Leon comes blowin' through, wavin' howdy as he passes by, Mrs. Wiley is showin' off her fontin' smarts by leavin' her italics runnin', and Floyd and ~Dež~ and Jelsik drop in for a visit, and TOM comes a'callin' with another upliftin' poem, and I don't know WHAT all. MY, ain't this a friendly town! I reckon ever'thing's been said already, so I'll just say...

I'll see ya.

August 10, 2001 - Msg 1618: Morning to the porch! Can you believe it is little ol' me up first this mornin' I am having a terrible aching in my feet and when I try to sleep it feels like electric shock going through my shoulders and from my hips to my toes. Been feeling this way for a couple of nights now. I hate going to the dad burn doctors cause all they say is "LOOSE WEIGHT!" Oh what's a body to do?

Today I am off for Michigan. I will see my darling boys play in the bluegrass festival at their county fair. And they are playing, "Boil Them Cabbages Down." I,as their proud aunt, may have to take my certified Brisco Darling pot likker jug and play along with them. I sure am proud of those two fellers. They ain't but 7 and 5 years old and they Daddy plays banjo but he is in his late thirties.

Little Opie's swimming lessons at the Y start again soon after school starts. He has gotten to be a pretty strong swimmer. I like to keep him in at least one extra cirricular activity. I want him to have an interest and something that he is good at when he gets older. A hobby or ability that he shares with other people that will keep him from falling in with the wrong crowd.

Well I think that I will try to rest my weary head once again. Have a good morning to you all.

Fun Girl

A one and A two."

August 10, 2001 - Msg 1620: Morning all! That's a wise parenting strategy Fun Girl. I know your SO proud of your darling boys! And by the way, you'll be real happy with your Kenmore. I love mine - most expensive washer ever made, though. I wanted to get the lower priced one, but the hubbie was in a hurry and wanted "the best" (funny, he didn't do the washing). We had a Kenmore before that one and it was over 25 years old before it kicked the bucket - rusted in this Florida weather.

Hey to Rafe - good to see you in these parts again! I love that BOO as well. Gomer always had great body language.

~Mrs. Wiley

"Will you look at that? MILDEW! Now, there's nothing I can do about MILDEW!"

August 10, 2001 - Msg 1621: Fun Girl, I have a Kenmore too, and it's a good one, I think you'll be pleased, although why you didn't just "call the man" to come and fix the old one I'll never know. Good to see you, Rafe, I was wondering where you were. - Hazel

August 10, 2001 - Msg 1622: You know, all this talk about school starting has been making me think. (I can be serious, you know). I kind of miss when my kids were young and I had to hurry around getting them off to school; going to basketball, soccer, softball games and all that stuff. It was fun and I miss it. But now that those days are sure is nice! It's nice worrying about only getting me off to work. I guess it's part of life's cycle and moving on to the next thing. Like how to get a 20 year old to leave the roost. - Hazel
(Boy these drugs sure do set me to pondering about stuff)

August 10, 2001 - Msg 1623: Good Morning all. I swear you are all so witty for being so early in the day. Good to hear from Rafe. You be right about the sloppy keyboard. How's the back attack Hazel? You doin better?

August 10, 2001 - Msg 1626: Goodmorning friends. TOM, I'm sorry to hear about all the meaness in Ohio, we have plenty here in my corner of Mayberry. But, TOM, those beautiful poems are so up-lifting, thank you.
Hazel @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@, here are some miracle pills. Mavis, I'm praying for your friend's daughter and your finger.
Hope all are well. It's hot here too. Hot all around the nation it seems. If I didn't know better, I would think I was living in that place you never see mentioned on tombstones.
I've enjoyed reading all the posts.
