April 04, 2002 - Msg 6046: G'morning, porch! Just got in from work, thought I'd check in. Miss Ellie, I'm sorry to hear about your little niece. Neurofibromatosis is a hateful disease, you just never know what it's going to do.
Mavis, I've never thought about "coloring" the Plum for Easter. What would I color her with? Actually, I dyed her feet blue once, but didn't mean to. I had heard that you could put a few drops of bluing in a final rinse water and it would brighten her white coat. My husband warned me, called it one of my "doofus ideas", but I went ahead. I had her standing in about three inches of water, to which I added the bluing, then dipped it up and over her with a cup. That part worked, and her body was a lovely, bright white. However, her feet which were soaking in the blue water, turned a bright blue. She looked like she was wearing blue knee socks! My husband consoled her (loudly) by telling her she couldn't help it if she had a nutty mommy. It took a couple of weeks and two more baths before her feet were normal again, and I thought I'd never hear the end of it. My husband enjoyed the whole thing waaaaay too much!
Well, gotta run. Errands and chores to get done. Have a lovely Mayberry day, friends.--Romeena

April 04, 2002 - Msg 6047: Blue Plumb! Aww, what a cute story Ro. Mornin porch! Asa, I saw Barney say "WBMMTBB?" last night. He's so incredulous that someone would touch HIS board! And mess it up, mind you! I just love it at the end of the epp, where Barn tells the new depity "You'd better gird your loins, buster!" I always LOVE when they do a "Big Barn" Action shot (where the camera sets on the ground looking up at barn walking off). Big Action music as well. It's BIG!

Salty, what good news about your cousin. An answer to prayer. My daughter-in-law's sister is another example. Paralyzed two months ago, back to work now! Still uses a walker for distances, but can walk around a room without it. Amazing, and still no definite diagnosis.
Well, good night, friends. I just love coming here and meeting up with you good people. Everyone have a great night's sleep, now, you hear? Asa, please try to sing softly in the morning, okay?--Romeena

IF IT WASN'T FOR FRIEND LIKE YOU.If it was n't for friends like you, the world
would be so dark and drear;
you have a way about yoy
that is honest and sincere.
one can't be lonest very long
or get to feeling "down",
you have a built-in sunshine.
if it wasn't for friends like you,I think
i'd lose my faith in man;
you always have a cheery word

and always understand.
your actions speak much louder
than your words can ever do;
i know i'm better and i'm blessed,
and just for knowing you.

April 05, 2002 - Msg 6068: Fine Citizen Charlotte:

It nice to know that not only the mayor's words are sometimes curbed. I'm thinking about forming a commission to look into the issue, but currently I am getting alot of pressure from Mr. Bush and Mr. Powell to help out with this trouble over there in the Holy Land. Don't they know I got enough to do here in Mayberry?! Between cover ups of hot water lines being run to public fountains, a shortage of chinese lanterns, and Civil War bonds payable I got enough heartaches here.

Ahh, the life of a Mayor. Busy, busy, busy.

Wonder what the special is today at the diner?

April 06, 2002 - Msg 6094: Morning porch. I surely do appreciate this porch too, Floyd. Thank you for making it all possible. Helen, I'm sorry about the fish too. I had a fish die once. It was a beta too. I don't suppose you'd like to hear the story, so early this fine morning? Ok, I'll tell you. We used to keep the fish bowl on a table in our living room. This was when our daughter was about 6 months old. When I would come home from someplace with her I would always toss her diaper bag on the floor beside the table. Well, anyway, one day the fish was gone. Not dead on the water. Just plain gone. I looked all over the bowl, under the rocks, couldn't find him. I kinda forgot about the incident, but continued to wonder what happened. A couple weeks later I was sitting in church with my daughter on my lap. She started to fuss during the sermon so I reached in the diaper bag for something, and pulled out that dead fish. He must have been spashing really high and jumped out of the bowl and landed in the diaper bag. Kinda gave me a fright, pulling out a dead fish during the middle of a quiet sermon. I sortof gasped and the people around me turned and looked at me. I just smiled and I guess they thought I was overcome with emotion at the preachers words. I haven't had another fish since.

Weird weather here, too, Salty. I was outside all afternoon yesterday, planting four flats of begonias. Beautiful day. Today it's raining and 50 degrees. The begonias are loving it, but I had plans to plant some other stuff. Guess it'll have to wait. Maybe Goldbrick Wheeler will come by and help me. I hear he's been seen in the neighborhood, and Clara was baking a pie - maybe she knows something.

Between my husband trying to get ready to race next weekend and people in and out of here all day I did not have time. Asa I do not know how I would look with blue feet but my toenails are painted purple does that count? With all the furkid stories around here I had to tell yall this one. My friends have a little boy of about 7 named Stetson. Well Stetson and his pa-paw are very close. Well pa-paw had gotten a puppy and Stetson was just carried away with it. And they would joke back and forth about who's dog it was. Well Sunday they were all hiding Easter eggs and Stetson was telling him it was HIS dog. Well pa-paw told him" I don't see your name on it" Well in a few minutes, Stetson was missing and so was the puppy. About thirty minutes later the dog came flying around the house with "Stetson" wrote on it's side in black marker. They all had to laugh at it. Hey to Asa, Mavis, Salty, Romeena, Helen, Mrs. Wiley, Ms. Wezee, and everyone else I forgot. Hey to Sam Scott and Sterling Holobyte and Nathan! Salty, I loved the story about Stetson! And Hazel the fish story is a prize!! We had a goldfish layin' on the floor half dead once. Kids and I put him back in the bowl and he fell to the bottom. I told the kids we should pray for "Gordy" so we did. After a couple of hours he had got his bearings and came back to life. A regular fish resurrection! Taught the kids a little about the power of prayer! Have a great evening! Romeena, I'm jealous of you out plantin' begonias! Too cold here yet.

Yipeee N.N. is back. We missed you girl. Hope things will calm down for you when you get all tucked in the new house. Good luck with the move.
Sorry yer weekend was a cool one Charlotte. Maybe you should advertise in one of them magazines, you know like J.B. from Detroit put his daughter through beauty school. Just a thought.
Hope everyone has a good Monday tomorrow and a good week. God bless.

But Mamas always worry about it being one of theirs next time, while kids think, "That will never happen to me." Summer vacation is just around the corner and I must say that I am about ready for it. Hey to everybody on the porch.

April 08, 2002 - Msg 6123: Fun Girl, it's good to hear from you. Glad Little Opie is doing okay. Kids are pretty resilient, and you're right, sometimes we parents aren't. Maybe we know or understand too much. Just keep on lovin' that little feller, and give him opoportunities to talk about it if he wants to. This has been a pretty rough thing for both of you, but spring is coming, and some days in the sunshine will make you feel much better. Love and prayers, --Romeena

...Listen, you find compelsion nuts all over!

April 08, 2002 - Msg 6125: Morning Porch. Now this is how you start a Monday, kicked back and relaxing. Took a day off today and ain't feeling bad about it for one second. Hope ya'll are having a good Monday.

Asa

P.S. I think I read the b&w eps start later this week on tv land.

April 08, 2002 - Msg 6126: Yippee! I'll take the color eps when that's all that's on, and I try not to compare or complain, but I'll be glad to see the b&w's start again, too. Asa, you enjoy this day off, and don't you dare feel bad about it. I'm having a pretty good Monday myself. After that powerful storm and unbelievable rain last night, I'm feeling very grateful. Had water within an inch of coming into my sunroom, but the rain stopped just in time. The sunroom is a converted patio, so it's lower than the rest of the house, and I've put in a flowerbed that has dammed the natural drainage. Not too bright, guess I'd better put a French drain in under that flowerbed, or maybe two. The bed is 66 feet long, crosses my property at the back from side fence to side fence. The water was up and over the edgers along that bed - guess that tells me something. Where's Mr. Wheeler when I need him??--Romeena

April 08, 2002 - Msg 6127: Funny you should mention that Romeena, French drains happen to be a specialty of mine. Well if I'm gonna start on that first thing in the morning I better get some shut-eye. Bye the way, you wouldn't have an onion I could borrow? I'm making me up a mess of stew and... (sniff) hey, is that fried chicken I smell? Well, never mind. Just give me my onion and I'll be on my way. Can I park my truck in your driveway? It ain't so bad. Just lie in the back and look at the stars.

Mr. Wheeler..aka Asa.

April 08, 2002 - Msg 6129: Romeena, I was about to say that Mr. Wheeler couldn't come because he was trimming the rose bushes but I guess I was wrong! Looks like he showed up just in time for a free meal!
Ya'll pray for me to get my brain in gear. My book deadline is fast approachin' and I have way yonder too many pages left to write!! Good night everybody!

April 09, 2002 - Msg 6140: Hey Rock, what's all that blank space after your post up there? Oh... I get it! Them are your amenities! Well, I can't see anything. Dog gone it, how do you expect us to learn how to walk into a room if we can't hear your amenities?
- Hazel

April 09, 2002 - Msg 6141: Thanks,Asa! I'll surely appreciate the help, whenever you can get to it. If you show up at the right time, there might just be a good supper waitin' for you, too. I've got some fresh okra, planning to make a good gumbo. Got some fresh snap beans, too, and some yams. I know where I can get some really nice pork chops, and I can fry 'em up like you wouldn't believe! My pan gravy is envied by my friends, and my sons said they'd put it on my tombstone - "Boy, could she make gravy!" Guess worse things could be said.
Well, gotta run. My own version of Mr. Wheeler is here, chipping out the old dark brown tile in my front entry, gonna put in some new, light and bright tile, and also tile my kitchen. Been wanting to do this for years, finally raked up the courage (and the $$). That should about finish my redecorating in this house.
Have a great day, friends!--Romeena

April 09, 2002 - Msg 6142: Howdy Porch! Asa, I'm keeping my head in the trenches - don't want it to get shot off! One of my co-workers came back from a 1-week vacation yesterday...and got fired! I had just alerted them that I will be out 6-8 weeks for surgery. Now, I don't expect my job to be here when I get back, just expect them to keep my Ins. going until I'm recovered (and not to fire me beforehand). Yep, that's the plan. Surgery, recovery, move to the big city. Yep. I decided I can't worry about what 'might' happen. Placing my trust in The Lord.

Thanks for worryin after me Asa, you're the CATS! Good coffee, Rock - much obliged!

You musta been sleeping real hard if I didn't wake you up Salty, cause I was crashing real hard this am. Check yer pillow and see if it was wet. Thats how I know if I slept real good, by how much I drooled during the night. I bet yours was soaked.
Them fixins sounds real good Romeena. I'll be over after a bit and get started first thing in the morning. I gotta go teach Rock how to golf first. Later gang

April 09, 2002 - Msg 6149: Howdy porch... Thank you Rock for the tea, I sure needed it today. Hello CT, Mavis, Mrs Wiley, Asa ,SD, and just everyone. Glad to hear the music went good Mavis & CT glad ur home ok. It's been a long time since I've been to Chicago. Just got home from work not to long ago, my Son from Fl. will be here tonight, can't wait to see him, he is my eldest. Think I'll go and have another cup of tea The Rock made, with a little honey in it and a splash of cream. I cooked swiss steak for my son. Good night porch, God Bless y'all.. Ms Wezee

Lots of luck to you and yers.

April 09, 2002 - Msg 6150: Say Mrs Wiley.. I grow and pickle okra with jalapinos & a tiny bit of a garlic clove in it MMMMmmmmmm. I also just slightly brown okra in a frying pan seal in a freezer box & all winter long I have freash,,, fried okra.. taste like it just came out of the garden.. Ms. Wezee... Miss Ellie how is carla?

April 09, 2002 - Msg 6151: Howdy, all! Ms. Wezee, whereabouts in FL does your son live? My eldest son lives in Mt. Dora - it's about 30 miles northwest of Orlando. Delightful little town.
Mrs. Wiley, I've never pickled any okra, though I love it, and will eat it with pleasure when anyone else makes it. I do make good gravy, though, learned when I was about 8 yrs old. Drop in some time, and I'll show you how! Actually, the secret is to start with good-flavored grease, like after frying pork chops, and don't be afraid to leave enough of it in the pan. If'n you're counting fat grams, you don't want my gravy! My cooking is a combination of my mother, my grandmother, and two favorite aunts. A hint here, a secret there, it all adds up to some stick-to-your-ribs meals! (Stick to your hips and thighs, too!)
Mavis, I've got just a dab of that gravy left, 'bout enough to cover a big biscuit, and I saved you one of them, too. Come on by. I'll leave the door unlocked. Sugarplum will let me know you're here.--Romeena

April 09, 2002 - Msg 6152: Hey, ya'll are making my mouth water. And I just decided yesterday that I've got to watch it! I've put on lots of weight this winter! The weather is nice here today. I'm ready for it. Maybe I can start getting some walking in. The hot tub exercises just aren't knockin' the pounds off! Everyone's food sounds wonderful. I've never had okra though. Funny how when I read this I'm thinkin' "southern dishes." We never have okra or yams or gumbo! We do eat the pork chops and gravy though. Lots of mashed potatoes too. Now, before someone starts scoldin' me, I ain't sayin' southern dishes ain't good dishes, I'm just sayin' I don't see much of 'em up here in the cold north country. I'll bet I'll keep the conversation goin' with those comments!
Hey to ya'll!
Charlotte Tucker

April 09, 2002 - Msg 6153: Hey, Charlotte Tucker! I'll bet you're right. Lots of us Southerners around here. I'm the worst kind - from South Texas!! Now, about the food - okra is one of those "divider" foods. You either love it or hate it. I love it. I even like it boiled, don't care if it IS slick and slimy! Just shake on some vinegar/pepper sauce and it's marvelous. Breaded and fried - yum! Chopped up and sauteed in a little butter with some onion, then add a can of diced tomatoes and a little sweet basil and let it all simmer - good gumbo! As for yams, that's just another word for sweet potato, sorta. Baked and buttered, or mashed with a little butter and brown sugar, maybe a bit of crushed pineapple tossed in - gooOOOOD tater! Took me several years to convert my Michigan-born hubby, but he learned to eat it all, even black-eyed peas. Started out callin' 'em cow feed! Hummph!
Now, that's the Southern part of me. The Texas part can make enchiladas, chili, wonderful frijoles, guacamole, tacos - whatever. I'm very versatile and not particular at all. I'll eat anything, even a New England boiled dinner. Not bad if you have some horseradish.
Now I'm hungry, and nothing in the house but frozen stuff. Sonic burger, anyone??--Romeena

April 09, 2002 - Msg 6154: I don't think I could live in the South. I'm kindof a picky eater. What's a sonic burger, Romeena?
- Hazel

Andy: What's wrong with frozen dinners? I like em!
Barney: No you don't.

April 09, 2002 - Msg 6155: Romeena can I move in with you?? you sure sound like my kinda cook!! CT have you been to the online Mayberry cookbook? you can find lots of good southern dishes there to try. Ms. Wezee wish I had knowed ya last year when my garden was coming in, couldn't find a good recipe for the pickled okra, so I gave lots of it away, my other half, altho a country boy all the way, doesn't share my love of okra & a woman can only eat so much on her own. Hate to see any food go to waste so I gave lots of it to Mamaw Jackson, who can't get out in a garden anymore. Hazel stay around us long enough & we could learn ya not to be too picky an eater. hehe One thing about us southerners we do love to eat!
