I really feel for you, especially now while I am dealing with the "Battle Of Worry" and have been feeling depressed off and on for a couple of weeks. How is everyone today? Doing good I hope.
Boo, I'm sorry I wasn't here the other day to sit with you on the porch. I hope your not feeling so overwhelmed. I know it's easy to say, but set back and look what you have been blessed with. I think someday you will look back on today with some fondness in your heart. But I know it's tough when you are dealing with problems at the moment. I always try to remember this saying I heard once, and it always helps me to feel a little brighter about things. " I use to cry when I had no shoes, till I met a man who had no feet."

Thanks for the good wishes, Charlotte. My little boy is coming along. Turns out he didn't have thrush afterall but something called herpetic something or other. Real painful condition and he doesn't want to eat for anything. The pain is in his mouth, esophogus and stomach and you should have heard him wail when I told him he had to swish the medicine in his mouth and swallow it but he couldn't drink water afterward. Made my hair stand on end. I think he is losing his patience! Poor kid lost three pounds off his fifty pound frame since Thursday. Thank ya'll for your prayers because I really thought I was going to lose it a time or two!

Hmmmm. Maybe I could get my son to fly us up there for the day, next time I'm in Florida. Now, that would be fun, for sure! I love flying with him, and he loves to fly. Always looking for an excuse to build his hours. I'm gonna have to think this one through. What are the dates of Mayberry Days again?

Boo, I know what you're talking about with your little boy. Sounds like what he has is the equivalent of having a whole bunch of those little mouth ulcers that most people get from time to time. One makes you pretty cranky, I can't imagine having a mouthful. Poor little guy! I would imagine that the medication the doc wants him to "swish and swallow" is primarily a numbing agent. The ulcerations themselves are usually self-limiting and will heal and disappear in a few days. Sure will give him misery until they do, though. Prayers for him, and for you and your nerves as well!

Spent six hours in the ER last night with terrible chest pain, got worked up for a heart attack, but it turned out to be pleurisy. A big IV dose of an anti-inflammatory drug cooled it down a lot, and I'm taking it in pills now, and am pretty comfortable. Sure did hurt, though.

Thank the Lord for bringing us through again. Hope you are all hanging in there.

Wish I had some earthshaking wisdom to share or even a good joke, but nothin' comes to mind. I think we need to be plannin' another get-together soon. Didn't we have fun at the duck pond last time? How about a night at Morelli's? I hear they make great pizza. I am open to suggestions and more than ready to have a little fun for a change. You know what would be real nice? I have some left-over fireworks from New Years and we could go down to Myer's lake and shoot them off one night. Asa

January 10, 2003 - Msg 11394: Dear Possum, don't try too hard to break the fever. It is just your immune system's response to the invading visus. Some viruses die at a certain temperature and your body is just trying to turn up the heat and "burn them out", so to speak. 100 degrees is not high. Just be sure to get plenty of rest, get your vitamin C and lots of fluids. That is the best way to help your body get well. There is a pretty good theory out there that taking too much medicine to take away a fever actually slows down the healing process. Just remember that the fever is not the sickness, it is the body's way of trying to get rid of the sickness. Taking something like tylenol or Advil helps you to feel better, though, so just weigh it out. Hope you are better soon!

-Sterling Holobyte

January 10, 2003 - Msg 11397: Hey, possum! I'm so sorry you're ailing. That old flu has been a rough one, makes you just feel terrible. Boo is right, absolutely right. Fever is a normal response, and 100 degrees is uncomfortable, but not unsafe. If it should get over 103, that's the time to take the Advil or Tylenol. Until then, just sit back and let 'er burn, baby, burn! Just picture those nasty little viruses going up in smoke! And keep those fluids coming, that's extremely important. Juices (not squeezin's) and water. Lots of water.

So we're getting the team together again? The Plum is very excited, brought me her uniform to check over and make sure the seams are secure. Her little backpack need a bit of mending, but it'll make it another year. She says bring on the Twinkies, moon pies and Pepsi. She's been exercising every day, to build up her strength and stamina. Now as for me, guess I'll run the concession stand again, if that's okay. I absolutely cannot catch a ball with my hands. Have caught several with my face over the years, would prefer not to do that again. Painful. Messy, too, as my nose always bleeds, just like Barney's.

homemaker, sounds like you've got a real challenge there. I'd bet that whatever smidgin of language that boy has, it will be Spanish, to make things even more difficult. A menos que tu hablas Espanol? Espero que si!

I never caught a ball with my face before but once i saw a real smarty-pants short stop catch one with his athletic supporter. It made my day, didn't care who won after that.

I wanted to ask ya'll something....I don't remember the final episode of TAGS. Can someone fill me in on how it all ended. I know Andy and Helen eventually got married and had a baby but I don't remember if that was on TAGS or Mayberry RFD. Thanks!

Boo (or ooB)

January 10, 2003 - Msg 11400: Well ooB (or Boo), as far as I remember, the last episode of TAGS was the one where they introduced Sam Jones and that Italian family came to stay at his farm, remember that one? I think that was their episode to spin-off into Mayberry RFD.

But I'm not the most knowledgable person on this porch when it comes to TAGS, I'm positive there are people who know the episodes better than I do so maybe they have a better answer to your question.

January 11, 2003 - Msg 11403: Thanks, Sterling, i remember that episode.

Good to see you on the porch, Teresa. Hope your mouth is good as new very soon. My little boy's mouth is much better. He finally started eating today and the swelling is out of his gums.

I don't want to make you envious, Teresa, but it was a beautiful, clear day here in South Texas with a high of 60 and sunny skies. One thing we never deal with is snow storms but it sure gets hot and humid in the summer! It is supposed to be a high of 50 and rainy and windy tomorrow so I guess I will stay home with the kids. A true Texan's blood starts to freeze up at around 50 degrees! I have to tell ya that I went to the grocery store today in shorts and a t-shirt and got an Icee while I was there. hahahaha......love ya'll!

ps-Romeena, my favorite drink is none other than Dr. Pepper (made in Texas). I'll settle for water, though-might be easier on the Plum.

January 11, 2003 - Msg 11405: Morning Porch. Kind of a sad morning on my porch. I watched the show 48 hours last night on tv about Elizabeth Smart. Sat and cried like a baby. I can't imagine how the parents have survived this terrible thing. I know I couldn't. Then an hour later we learned that a Life Flight helicopter had been sent out to a bad accident in the west dessert and ran into a thick fog and tried to make an emergency landing but crashed. 2 of 3 people on board died. One nurse, one medical tech and the pilot. Still not sure who survived.
Sorry, don't mean to be so dismal this morning. Just kind of bummed out though. If you fine folks could remember the Smart family in your prayers I know it would be appreciated. Thanks friends.

Almost forgot, I didn't pitch last year Asa but I will if you want me to, I was going to PLAY left field, but sounds like the outfield is full of lawn chairs this year!

January 11, 2003 - Msg 11409: Where in Texas did you used to live and what area are you in now, Teresa? Our weather is cold and wet today but it is a nice change for us. We can light a fire and enjoy being inside.

Asa, I know just how you feel. Sometimes I really hurt so much for other people and wish I could change things. I am realizing that by prayer, I can. I may never see the results of those prayers but I still believe they make a difference. Life can seem like a big ball of pain sometimes. Thank God , though that it hasn't made us so hard that we can still have compassion and cry for others. God bless you, Asa, for you caring heart.

January 11, 2003 - Msg 11413: Howdy Porch!
I sorta made a citizen's arrest today! I was driving along with my Opie and my little 8 year old niece when some brainless wonder passed us in the center turn lane. That got my attention. I thought maybe he had an emergency so I just kept my eye on him. Well, he kept cutting in and out of traffic, passing in the turn lane, etc. I got my cell phone out to call the po-lice! I wasn't close enough any more to get a license number or anything, but I kept observing. After about 2 miles of driving crazy I saw him, sure as shootin', hit another car! Then the guy got out of his van and proceeded to walk away! Well, I had parked across the street so I could tell the po-lice what I had seen, so I just kind of quiet like, followed him as he took off on foot. By now I was in di-rect contact with the authorities! I nonchalantly passed the guy as he went through a parking lot, then I circled back to the area, saw him again and watched him walk in an office building. I just told those police men exactly what building to find him in and gave him a complete description of what he was wearing. It seemed like it took them forever to get there, but get there they did, and they went in the office, found the guy and brought him out! Hurray!! He took the time to grab a briefcase out of his van before he took off, and he still had it with him. I wondered what was in it that was so important for him to go back to the van to get it, but now the po-lice can sort that all out!
Well, now all I got to say is, "Citizen's arrest, citizen's arrest!"

January 11, 2003 - Msg 11414: Way to be Mary. Gomer would have been so proud of you and so am I. It's time for the citizens to take back our streets and neighborhoods. In fact the next time I see Emma jaywalking, she's going down.

January 11, 2003 - Msg 11415: I believe you ought to receive a citation for that, Mary Wiggins! Way to go! What a concerned citizen! About this softball thing--I can hit ok, I can't run for nothin' and as far as playing a position, I pitch to my son now but in my youth I was in the outfield making clover chains and sunning myself. Put me wherever you like, Asa. Perpetually in the dugout perhaps. I was thinking of asking you for an update on the Smarts the other day but figured since I hadn't heard anything that the news wasn't good. Possum, I hope you're buckin' off that flu bug and fever. Here's a bottle of Colonel Harvey's Elixir, that ought to help. Who wrote that porch comment? You'd better sign it or someone will be taking credit for it. That's a good 'un.

Y'all need a designated hitter? If not, just toss me in the outfield somewhere!
Asa, I watched 48 hours also.My heart goes out to the Smarts-especially the little sister. What a tragic, terrible thing. Also heard about the chopper crash.Sure hated that bad news.Well,at least in the Laci Peterson case,it was an anchor they found in the water, and not a body.Still...where is that girl and her baby? Today was gonna be her baby shower too.How sad.
Y'all,I think we oughta give Mary a special medal for that daring Citizen's Arrest she made! Way to go! Mavis, haven't forgotten about e-mailing more pics to you-just haven't gotten 'em yet.

January 11, 2003 - Msg 11418: Three cheers for Mary!

Hope you are feeling better, Possum and hope it's not Strep. I had a bad virus once that gave me an awful sore throat but it wasn't Strep.

My young'uns are still awake and it's ten o'clock so I better go get them to bed. Goodnight Ya'll!

January 12, 2003 - Msg 11419: Hey, possum! What you're describing surely does sound like strep, and honey, I'm here to tell you, if it really is strep, you don't want to wait until Monday. Get thee to a doc-in-the-box or the closest ER. You need to be on antibiotics, like yesterday. Strep, left untreated, can go into rheumatic fever, which can leave you with damaged heart valves. I'm serious, love.

Asa, you're a dear. No particular reason, you're just a special person.

Mary Wiggins, I'm gonna see if Andy will give you a special deputy badge. You earned it!

OK, so far the Plum will be carrying Dr. Pepper, Mt. Dew and water. Oh, and Pepsi. I know we have several Pepsi drinkers. For those of you who like sweet tea, will you settle for the bottled variety? Much easier for little Plum to carry, she doesn't have to worry about spilling it. Asa, do you know where her little wagon is from last year? She says if it's over there under the bandstand with all those spiders, she's not about to pull it until someone gives it a spider-check. She hates spiders about as much as I do.

Well, nitey-nite, friends. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

January 12, 2003 - Msg 11420: Good morning Porch pals - here's a special "in training" breakfast for the team: wheaties, banannas, oj, MEAT, TATERS and BREAD! (don't HEAVE it)

Mary Wiggins, that was a fine thing you did - but does this mean we should start calling you "Nutsy" or "B--b"? (Gomer: B--B? Andy, he called me a B--b!) Possum, Ro is right as rain - get to the ER if you can't make it to Monday. Hope you get to feelin better soon.

Ok, Rollcall: Boo, Homemaker, Charlotte, me, Hazel, Ro and Plum, Teresa, Mavis... anyone elst? That's almost a team, 'cept most of ya wants to be in the dugout. Coach Asa, you'd better russtle up some more players.

We do need more players. Salty, N.N. where are you two? You gonna play this year? Get your selve's in here.
You wanna hear something strange? Last night I had this dream that I met Romeena. I was loading some stuff in the back of my truck and this woman comes up and starts asking "do you think a person should have them a full time handyman?" And I just knew it was her. So I asked her, "do you know who I am?" She shook her hed. I told I was Asa from the porch and we laughed and carried on for a good long time. And she was just as pleasent and nice in real life as she is here on the porch. Y'all ever dream about meeting porch friends?
Hope you get feeling better Possum. Git in and see that Dr. These nurses here know what they are talking about.
Hope you are not feeling so overwhelmed now Boo. Your spirits seem to be higher.

January 12, 2003 - Msg 11424: Mornin'! Possum, I'm sorry I didn't say anything about it last night but Ro's right. Strep is nothing to mess around with and if your throat is really sore, it sure could be that. I had repeated strep infections as a child (seems like I was always on Penicillin-still can't stand anything cherry flavored to this day). I had my tonsils out at seven and have had a echocardiogram of my heart and I only have a very small heart murmer, thankfully (probably born with it), so don't get scared just get some attention if you need it, okay?

Asa, I am in much better spirits, thanks. You know, I thought what I needed was a vacation but when my son got so sick, I was really worried and started praying and really seeking the Lord. I have to admit I had grown very busy with "things" and taking care of kids but my relationship with the Lord was really lacking. I never read my bible and I was not spending time in prayer everyday. After the trial I went through I have made some positive changes (like turning off the tv) and I have been really enjoying my children. We play and laugh more and the little messes don't bother me like they did. It has been good! I am much more relaxed and enjoying life. There is a bible verse that fits my situation.:
"He makes the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the Lord."--Psalm 113:9 I don't know if I ever told you but I was a "barren" woman and I was blessed with my little ones (my dr is still scratching her head)! So, I am trying to count my blessings and keep a positive outlook, they grow up so fast, don't they?

No, I have never dreamed of anyone on the porch but I do have a mental picture, sort of, about what everyone looks like. Do ya'll want to tell what you look like or will we keep it a mystery? I think we have all shared our ages, haven't we?

Here is something for you sweet dog lovers. Yesterday I took my son to a relative's house who has new puppies (1 week old). The mom is a basset mix and the dad was a mut named "Howard". She had nine puppies and it's her first litter. Boy, were they cute. I got to smell that wonderful puppy breath! When I held them close to my cheek they made that little grunting noise they make. It was so sweet. When the mom had the puppies, she had one in a tennis shoe that nobody knew about until they found it later. It was cold and barely breathing but my sis-in-law gave it mouth-to-mouth and it came around just fine. I think puppies are one of God's finest creations!

well, I think I have talked quite enough. I will give your eyes a rest. Have a great sunday!

January 12, 2003 - Msg 11426: Hi everyone.we finally got some sunshine today to melt the snow, that has really lifted my spirits.maybe we can actually do something besides make snowmen and sledride!Boo,you asked what part of Texas I lived in,I used to live outside of Beaumont,in a little town called Buna.My first husbands father lived there,so,after we married,we lived there for a few years,about5 years I think. We traveled alot,my husband was a water tower inspector/supervisor,so our home base was buna, but,we traveled alot, all over Texas,Georgia,Louisiana, mississippi, etc.for his jobs he had to be on.We moved from there in1989,his health was bad,he had black lung from the sandblasting and his dads health wasn,t good,so my father in law moved in with my sister-in-law,in Indiana, and,we moved to Tennesee, because my husband took more of a consulting job ,because of his health. He passed away in 1992.I remarried in 1994,and,the man I,m married to now is originally from west virginia,I,m originally from a little town in Pa,right on the west Virginia line,so we only live about 25 miles from both of our hometowns.Whew,I guess you aren,t the only one writing alot today Boo!I guess I better give everybodys eyes a rest too!Talk to you later porch,Teresa

January 12, 2003 - Msg 11427: Awwwwwwww, Asa! So nice of you to include me in your dream, and so pleasantly, too. You're just too much, you know that?

Boo, you like to smell puppy breath, too? So do I! Can't say why, but I do. It's faintly skunky, but still a pleasant, warm, friendly smell. But then, I also like the smell of a horse barn. Cow barn is a little iffy at times, and a pig barn is just plain awful, but I love the smell around horses. When I was a young'un, I used to love to put my face against my horse's big old warm neck and just inhale his scent.

Back to puppies, aren't they just the most precious little things? Have you ever noticed, that no matter what breed they are, they all look pretty much the same at birth. Colors vary, but that's about all. Little short dried-apricot ears, big old heads, blunt faces, round tummies and little feet with splayed-out toes. So cute! Then in a couple of weeks or so, depending on the breed, the changes start to appear. Spaniel ears start to lengthen, collie noses start to stretch out, mastiff feet become huge, poodle hair starts to curl, whatever. But whatever the breed, even if unknown, they all start out looking a lot alike, and with that distinctive, milky puppy breath, and I just love it! By the way, the Plum just informed me that SHE never had skunky breath, thank you, and walked out in a huff. I can't prove her wrong, because I didn't see her until she was nine weeks old, but I'll bet she did. (teehee)

Everybody have a great week now, you hear? Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

January 12, 2003 - Msg 11428: That's true, Ro. I never thought about it before but all puppies do look pretty much alike at first. Love those little fat ears they have!

Teresa, I have been to Beaumont but it has been so long I don't remember anything about it. I never heard of Buna. My mom's family is from West Virgina and my Grandpa was a coalminer for many years. My great grandfather died in a mining accident. I always heard my mom talk about "black lung". I guess alot of men in the mines got it from the coal dust. So sorry that you lost your first husband.

Well, I am feeling sleepy so I think I will take a snooze while the kids are napping. It is cold and rainy here and that makes for good sleeping!

January 12, 2003 - Msg 11430: Evening porch! Sorry I haven't been by before now, I have been busy setting up another website for a friend of mine that runs a non=profit org. to help animals & people. When I came in & saw all the posts about the puppies, I had to smile, that is what I have been thinking all day. Puppies are darlin, but I have to say there are WAY too many of them out there & not all of them are as lucky as the Plum, Sammy & all my kids. That is what I have been working on, the amount of animals put to sleep every year whose only crime was being born. Very sad. Anyway, here is the URL if ya'll would like to take a gander at what I have been doing today. http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/VA195.html Now to get over to the Cutlass & add some more stuff. Busy as a bee is me today!

January 12, 2003 - Msg 11433: Sorry to sound so ignorant after all this time, but what exactly is the cutlass?

Mavis, you would have been proud of me. I gave my sister-in-law (with the puppies) a good lecture about being a responsible pet owner and having her dog spayed. She told me she would, we'll see. She is not a very responsible person and just got a Pomeranian dog that she says she wants to breed and sell the pups. Personally, I feel like she should just have all her animals fixed and leave it at that. Here in Corpus Christi they gas thousands of unwanted dogs, purebred dogs, too. I just get so mad when I think about people letting their animals have litter after litter.

Did you hear that creaking? That was me getting off my soapbox. Hope you all have a great day tomorrow!

Boo

January 12, 2003 - Msg 11434: Hey Boo sadly I deal with that everyday. I know there are responsible breeders out there, but there are more that aren't. I have learned after almost 25 years in this business, if I let it get to me it will, so I help in other ways.
As for the question about the Cutlass it is a webpage I put up for all us here to be able to get in touch with one another, either email or one of the many instant messengers. It's pretty neat even if I did put it up, I mean neat like we can email each other & stuff. I ask for your email, your birthday & your screennames to go on there, but you can just send whatever you want. I promise, I won't let Barney put it up on the bulletin board!
I'm gonna try to put the link in here, fingers crossed that I don't make the porch rock, I'm with the Plum, I hate gettin down there with them spiders to fix it!

Did you like my umbella in the outfield - I thought that the rainbow colors were Perfect!

January 13, 2003 - Msg 11437: Mavis,
I am impressed! That is quite a site you helped develop. How did you get all the advertiser's on board? You really are computer literate aren't you? Virginia is probably a little far for a Michigander to go to get a dog, but in my family if any one is looking for a new pet I will encourage the humanitarian route of saving an unwanted animal and giving it a good home. My brother who is a widower with three young children lost his beloved dog right after Thanksgiving. He is a real died in the wool dog-lover and I am sure he will eventually want to adopt a new friend! In my family my husband and daughter have allergies, but we have already had this discussion! I would love a dog, but, alas, I am overruled!

Asa, don't forget about me for your baseball team! When are tryouts? I could tryout for infield, outfield, benchfield, you name it! I used to be scorekeeper for my kids when they played ball, so I can do that too! I guess I could even be batgirl,(although I don't look much like her)!

Teresa, it sounds like you have lived just about everywhere! Which place have you liked best, or thought was prettiest, or had the nicest people? Some day my husband and I are going to relocate and I'd like some input on different areas. I think we will probably end up in Wyoming or Alaska, but the smokies are real pretty and so is Colorado and Utah, and lots of other places. I haven't been to Texas, I hear that is real pretty too!
Enough of my ramblings, I have to get some work done, so you all have a great Mayberry day!
