I doubt they'd understand, though, and would be crying into their fine wines when help isn't forthcoming. --Romeena

Hello Ed - have you been diversifying lately? And Sterling - nice to see you too and
the colorful porchsters. . .pink, blue, green - how springy on this dreadful Indiana gray day. No school today - ice / sleet closed us. That makes day 12 (I think) of being closed.

Suppose to be nice tomorrow - boy we could use nice weather - it would make everyone feel better.

Well - take care ya'll - keeping fizzing for Asa and hugs for ya'll.

I know you were folks are praying and I know that God has allowed me to heal and claim this blessing and I ain't letting go. "The prayer of a righteous man availeth much." (You can bet your bottom dollar Calvin Coolidge didn't say that, originally.)
I want to thank you all for those prayers. I am rebuking any further problems with this ankle. I feel so free. I can't remember the last time I haven't had this annoyance. I imagine it's been over 8 years. You can not imagine how great it feels. Thank the Lord!

Well I am in the mood for pot roast. It's cold and nasty here today and something warm and hearty sounds pretty good.

Grandpa Harvey is coming home from the hospital today. He had been on a heart medicine for a while and it worked, but messed up his thyroid, so they took him off. I guess they decided it was worth keeping him on. He has a defibulator inside his heart and it went off 8 times the day they hospitalized him. Didn't look good, but our God is an awesome God and He is sending Grandpa home with Grandpa.

Well I will run for now. Gotta go check my email and see what dumb thing I have said that has Trevor in hysterics today.

You know, all this fizz talk has me all bubbling over with delight! Hee hee ha ...oh well, so it wasn't that funny.
But it did make me think about how much I love pickle juice! Does anyone else? There was nothing better than coming in on a hot day, opening the refrigerator, opening the jar of pickles, and guzzling the pickle juice! Course, my Mom wondered why her pickles were always drying out, but it was just so good!
Oh, but we were speaking about fizz, weren't we?! Well, later on I tried making my own concoction of pickle juice mixed with club soda. I was going to call it Pickle Pop and for a slogan I was going to use "Get Pickled!" I had high hopes for Pickle Pop. This was after Pickle Chips had come out(I love them too!).
Well, the club soda/pickle juice thing didn't work too well together; tasted pretty bitter, so I kind of gave up on the Pickle Pop idea(for now). I still love pickle juice though!
Have a good night, Mayberry!

March 07, 2003 - Msg 12513: Or the juice from the Valasic mild banana pepper rings. YUM! I know it sounds wierd, but its gooood. Just talking about it now is twanging my buds. Another tip I have picked up is I take baby carrots and put them into the jar after the pepper rings are gone and in a couple days you have some delicious pickled carrots. YUMMY.

Off to the dentist in the morning to get that pesky chipped tooth fixed. Oh boy, just can't wait. NOT! The Darling Boys and Charlene are here for the week. They will be here tomorrow night for dinner. Hot dogs and macaroni and cheese. How nutritious and delicious.

Well, gonna hit the ironing board. And speaking of ironing boards, one night I woke up in the hospital and the pain medicine was doing strange things to my head. I was convinced that I was laying on an emory board. (Boy I must have really shrunk) It sounds funny now, but I was afraid to move for fear that I would fall off. It was scarry. It was what I perceived to be
reality at that time and in that place. Wow, I really have made progress. Thank you Jesus!

There you will find information on bottled pickle juice, as a beverage. I like pickle juice, too, and have bought this product at the local Tom Thumb grocery. It's really pretty good, especially when very cold, and it is dill flavored, not sweet.

I'm planning to make the Toad in the Hole dish tonight, unless someone calls and offers me a better deal, like happened the other night. I'll let you all know how it turns out. Hope I do it right!

Got all my labs and Xrays done this morning, have to be at the hospital at 9:30 on Monday. I'd appreciate it very much if you dear folks will keep the prayers coming. I'll admit to some real apprehension about this thing, but I'm going to leave it with the Lord and spend a peaceful weekend.

March 07, 2003 - Msg 12525: Oh gross! I was gonna try some pickle juice but that last visual just ruined it for me, Sterling. Long time ago when I worked night shift at the hospital (on those rare nights that we were not busy) a nurse friend of mine used to put apple juice in a specimen cup and freak out the new nurses by taking a sip and saying things like, "she has sugar in her urine". Worked every time. You shoulda seen the looks of horror! We came up with some very creative things to do on those slow nights, let me tell you. I'll bet Ro has some of those stories, too, if she wants to share them.

I am praying for you, Ro, be sure of that. God's peace keep you and may you have joy even in these trying times.

March 07, 2003 - Msg 12526: Are ya'll real, real sure that Bush is doing the right thing? I think I need a little reassurance because I have a Democratic, liberal Dad who keeps trying to fill my head with how dangerous Bush is. He says it isn't worth it to him (Dad) to risk the lives of his grandsons to go over there and take care of Saddam. I think I know what I believe but could use some good, Christian opinions. I want to believe that Bush is sincere and really a Christian but I have to admit I don't trust any politician. Ya'll set me straight, okay?

March 07, 2003 - Msg 12527: Oh, that was me, Boo.

March 07, 2003 - Msg 12528: Boo, I'm certainly no political authority, but I truly believe that our president is sincere and is doing what needs to be done. I, too, have a grandson in the Army, and yet I still feel that we need to control the threat on Iraqi soil, before we have to try to control it on our own. Saddam has had no hesitation to gas, torture and murder his own citizens, even some members of his own family. Why would he stop at doing even worse to others, including us? I'm old enough to remember WW2, and if the US hadn't stepped in then and defended England and yes, even the French, we'd all be speaking German today.

The war was horrible, and many American lives were lost. The sad fact is that it would have ended much sooner, with much less loss of life, if we had entered it earlier than we did. Everyone tried to convince themselves that Hitler was just a loud-mouthed bigot, and that we should stay out of Europe's troubles. It wasn't until the tanks actually rolled into Poland, and reports of Hitler's ghastly death camps began to surface, that we realized we had to do something. England, thank God, hasn't forgotten. That's why they're backing us today. France, unfortunately, has a short memory.

There are those who say this whole thing is about oil. Well, to some extent, it is, but that's not the whole story. Besides, the very ones who throw that accusation around are the same ones who would cry the loudest when their SUV wouldn't run anymore. Those things don't run on coal, you know!

The oil question aside, this is also about human rights, women's rights, and protecting the innocent thousands who are under the life-and-death control of an evil, vicious man and his equally evil regime. The only thing that has kept him from spreading and extending that regime into neighboring countries is the fear that we will not tolerate it. If he begins to suspect that we're just rattling sabers and are not willing to actually engage him, there's no telling what he will do. There is no pacifying him. As the saying goes, "power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." He has enjoyed absolute power, and he is absolutely corrupt.

Well, enough. One of these days I'll tell you how I REALLY feel! Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

March 07, 2003 - Msg 12529: Hey, it's me again! I just finished a supper of Toad in the Hole. Yep, I did it. I made it, using the recipe provided earlier by bulbsnatcher. Guess what? It's good! There's some left, so if anybody wants to come by and sample it, come on. I'll be up late.

It's an unusual dish, and I'm sure there are many variations, but it's quite good. I used some little uncooked sausages, which did cook through as the dish baked, but next time I may try it with the Little Smokies. I love them, and I think their flavor would be great. The ones I used were a bit sage-y for my taste. Still, it was good. I probably wouldn't choose it over a good chicken fried steak, but that's true of many dishes.

The onion gravy that the recipe mentions was a bit of a puzzler, so I just improvised. I melted some butter in a small skillet, sliced a fresh onion into it, and sauteed the onion until it was nicely brown. Then stirred in a Tbsp of flour to make a roux. When the flour had browned, I added a can of Campbell's French onion soup slowly, stirring to make a smooth gravy. A half can of water made it just right. You just spoon it over the Toad in the Hole. BTW, I see where the name comes from. The little sausages sort of poke one end up through the bread-like pudding (don't know what else to call it), like a little toad looking up out of a hole in the ground. The recipe makes four generous servings.

Well, so much for toads in holes. As I said, it was tasty, and I'll probably make it again. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

March 07, 2003 - Msg 12530: Romeena....that sound so good, and it was just grand reading about you making it! You are truly a jewel! Uh....yeah....I'll take some of that. March 08, 2003 - Msg 12533: Thanks for your opinions, Ro. I feel sure you are right. My dad and I disagree on many things and have for many years! I respect him, but it's hard to have any respect for his opinions sometimes. He is very anti-semetic for some reason, which may have something to do with his views. Who knows? He is very different than ANYONE else in the family. He served in the Navy during WW2 and served as judge and mayor in the town I am from so you would think he would be of a different mind, but he is really "out there" in his thinking and gets worse with age. God help him. He doesn't like Jews or Christians much, it seems. He tolerates my beliefs but wants to argue with me about it and can't understand how anyone can be so "dumb" as to believe the bible was inspired (he thinks it was written, "by a bunch of jews" and we fell for it). So, over the years I have stopped talking to him about it and have chosen just to pray. I can't change him, already tried that. Only God can show him the truth.

Well, I am going back to bed.

March 08, 2003 - Msg 12538: Good afternoon porch!
I thought I might chime in about the possibility with war in Iraq. I have heard recently about a liberal politician in London, England, who recently returned from a trip to the middle east. She has taken a lot of grief there, for supporting Tony Blair's views, especially because she is a considered liberal. I found a link to an article in the times on line that I thought may be informative. I don't know if this link will work but you could copy and paste it in your address bar. Here it is,,635-592766,00.html I stated before, I am a peace loving person, and personally, I abhor conflict. Unfortunately, even peace loving people like myself must sometimes take a stand that is uncomfortable, but I believe that Saddam is a very evil man, and left unchecked, he IS a threat to all the world, and especially the U.S. I hope I haven't offended any one, I just thought I would throw my opinion out there.

March 09, 2003 - Msg 12545: Bulbsnatcher, you are so sweet! You didn't hurt my feelings at all, but thank you for being so concerned. It has happened a few times before that people have mentioned keeping it light and I started to feel guilty like maybe I was spoiling the porch for some of you wonderful people. Please don't feel badly, there was certainly no offense taken. I am really sorry if I came across in a harsh way. I think all of you are the greatest (and that means you, Bulb)! Please, for my sake, don't be so hard on yourself, Dear One.

Well, we had a beautiful, spring-like day here in South Texas. I love to see spring in the air with all the wildflowers. My baby girl has the sweetest little spring dresses hanging in her closet that she couldn't wear all winter. I am one who likes to dress little girls in pastel, girly dresses with lacy socks and patent shoes. I like for my girl to look like a girl (it's so much fun!).

My dear husband took me out on a date tonight and we had a nice time. The older he gets, the sweeter he gets. I am so thankful for him.

Hope all of you have a wonderful day tomorrow. Remember the Lord and be thankful, friends. Ro, I am still praying for you, most of all. March 09, 2003 - Msg 12548: Ellen Brown, have you spoken to a lawyer? There are laws protecting the rights of grandparents in situations such as yours. It's quite possible that the court would set visitation guidelines and order her to let you see them. Check it out, honey, and see what you can learn. Once you're sure you're on solid ground, you could tell her what you plan to do if she forces you, and give her one more chance to play fair. Then if she doesn't, you can go on to court. You have rights, girl. I know lawyers are expensive (I know I couldn't afford one), but there's always Legal Aid if you need them. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

March 09, 2003 - Msg 12549: Hey, Romeena, Asa, somebody around on the porch right now who could e-mail me or get on AOL IM? I've noticed something for sale on eBay, and I really don't think it's represented exactly right. Kind of in a dilemma as to what I should do...sure could use some help! I'm kinda leaning toward doing nothing, but that's not right either. -Bulbsnatcher

March 09, 2003 - Msg 12550: Boo...I'm so very glad everything is okay...I have to admit, I was worried. I've felt a black cloud over my head until I read your sweet post above. Thanks for understanding, and I've ALMOST got this shoe out of my mouth...just a couple of more tugs ought to do it. The neighbors are taking shifts on helping, and another group should be coming along here after they get home from church. I think there are several guys that are going to help this time, so hopefully, they can finish wedging it out of my mouth. It seems to be hung on a molar. :-)

Romeena our prayers will be with you tomorrow and for the days to come, as will our thoughts. I wish you could take a laptop in there with ya....we'd sure be e-mailing you! :-)

March 09, 2003 - Msg 12551: Mornin' Y'all.Ellen,I sure hope you get that situation straightened out.Don't seem right somehow, not being able to see your grandkids.Best of luck with that.
Romeena, just want to say again that I will be praying for you and hoping for the best.Stay strong and "Trust in the Lord with all your heart ... and He will direct your path."
I visited a new Russell Stover candy outlet yesterday-talk about de-lish! Bought a few boxes of goodies and I'm gonna leave one on the Porch for y'all,so enjoy!

March 09, 2003 - Msg 12553: Sorry for ruining your appetite for pickle juice, Boo. But you could still try some and while you're drinking it, keep thinking to yourself, "this is NOT urine, this is NOT urine." Maybe that would help! :)
Salty, glad to have another pickle juice lover on the porch! I've been getting some weird looks around here lately.

Ellen Brown, that xdaughter-in-law of yours ought to be ashamed of herself! If she tries to get YOU to tell the kids that their daddy doesn't love them, imagine what she's been telling them about him herself! She's using her kids in her anger at her ex-husband, and that's the worst thing a parent(of either sex) can do to the kids! That's pathetic!
Sorry, but that sort of thing just gets me riled!! Hope you find the strength to get through trying times like these.

March 09, 2003 - Msg 12556: Howdy Porch. Hope all is well for everyone.
Like everyone else here I would like to add my thoughts and prayers to go with you these coming days Romeena. I just have this feeling that all will be well for you. Please take comfort in the mant friends you have here pulling for you.
Sorry I wasn't here to help you bulb. Doggone it!
Sorry that your situation is bad to Ellen. I think Romeenna gave you some good advice though. Try a leg a lamb.

March 09, 2003 - Msg 12558: Good one, Hazel.

Ellen, I really feel for you. It must be terrible to be in your situation. I can't imagine your ex-daughter-in-law would do something like that to her children (must have been a really messy divorce). I agree, find out what can be done legally.

Gotta go ....

March 10, 2003 - Msg 12559: Morning porch. It's Monday already? My, where did the weekend go?
I hope you all have a great Monday and a great week. Prayers for all that need them.

March 10, 2003 - Msg 12560: I think the weekend went up in smoke. I kinda half fell off the "stop smoking wagon". *Sigh* I guess I'll see if I can catch up with it and get back on. Getting tired of these urges to smoke--thinking about giving up the fight.

Just thinkin' about all of you folks this morning and wanted to drop in to say "hi". I guess Romeena is getting ready to go to the hospital right now. I'm praying very hard for her, and I know all you precious folks are too.

Brrr.....COLD this morning on the way to work! Whoever opened the gate and let Old Man Winter back in, shame on you!

Sorry I didn't keep things very Mayberry here this morning....just disgusted with the bump in the road knocking me almost completely off my wagon. Now I'm all bruised up! Maybe I oughta try some Vicks...think that could help me quit?

Ellen....I hope things improve for you and those children. That's a really sad, awful situation. Such sick, selfish people - I just don't understand.

March 10, 2003 - Msg 12566: Looks like I missed lots of lively conversations about war, Vicks, and pickle juice! Haven't even had time to get totally caught up. I got a busy one ahead of me.
Charlotte Tucker checkin' in!

March 10, 2003 - Msg 12567: That's right. You know the old saying, "It's not the falling down that matters, but the getting up again.". We all fail many times at things but we aren't a failure till we quit.

I heard a dr. say that some people would rather die than change their diets and I thought about smokers and how hard it must be to quit. Nobody would really want to go on smoking with the health risks involved, but the terrible urge to smoke makes it so hard to stop. I have the same problem with not eating right. I do well and then fall off the wagon but as long as I can keep climbing back on, I will. Don't give up, Honey, we care too much about you.

Lord bless Romeena tonight and give her peaceful sleep.

Later, friends..

March 10, 2003 - Msg 12568: Hey, Charlotte, I didn't see you sitting there. Hope you are having a good evening.

Oh, Teresa, where have you been?! We missed you.

March 10, 2003 - Msg 12569: Good evening all - good to see you Teresa. It is cold here too.
Just thought I would share a lively discussion we had yesterday in the car -(remember I have a 5 & 6 year old - boys, that is). They were fighting over who they liked best in the BRADY BUNCH!
Thought that was kind of neat. They know the whole lineup after the Beav, Andy, Greg and Marcia (Marcia, Marcia) and then the FONZ. They keep asking where Richie is because these are the later episodes where he is off in the military. Too cute!
Oh well -

have a good evening !

March 10, 2003 - Msg 12570: Hey, everybody...

BIG BIG SMILE!! Your support and encouragement is so heartwarming. I just hope I don't lean on all of you precious folks too hard for a pick-me-up, but I tell you -- you just never let me down! I will keep fighting this horrible addiction thanks to all of you, and I hope some time soon, I will win. You are right, is very hard to quit for some folks. In my case, I have the actual severe physical dependency on the nicotine, and then I have the dependency of something to do with my hands. Well, if I can stop my whining and get down there with them spiders....oh..uh....I mean concentrate on quitting, then I can win!

I went to eat at Cracker Barrel this evening....I just love that place! They had their great big fireplace going.....just beautiful! I came real close to ordering one of their just seems so heartwarming, but I had meatloaf instead. Oh...I sat in the non-smoking section too, so that's a start, huh? :-)

Boo...I join you in prayer for Romeena...I think all of us do. She is such a dear. I hope she can feel our love and thoughts are with her.

Hugs to all! (HUGGY HUGGY!)

I get really down sometimes, and I go look at a magnet I have on my refrigerator that says "We cannot change the direction of the wind, but we can adjust our sails." Sometimes that helps me some...I hope it helps you too! :-)

March 11, 2003 - Msg 12581: Evening porchters. How is everyone doing tonight?
Hey Charlotte, I sure hope you get feeling better. Don't know whats got ya down but I pray you perk up soon. Just remember Barney's talk to Gomer, "in this life there are all kinds of roads" you just are on a bumpy one right now but I "cpect" you'll be back on pavement soon if you hang on there. We all can help ya.
Howdy to the bulb and her formerly nicotine stained fingers. LOL Hope you don't give up hon. You can do it.
Hey Mrs. Wiley, you doing ok? We sure miss your posts here. And the same goes for you too Salty. You promised me you would sit more with us here and yer letting me down! LOL
Good to see you Hazel and your delightful sense of humour. You too Tom. Hope you are well.
Clara, Teresa, others who ain't sat with us for a spell. Your rockers are waiting and so are we.

March 11, 2003 - Msg 12582: Good evening, All. Hope everyone is ok. I just finished watching TAGS and loved it, of course.
Andy: "Well, Aunt Bee has a pretty good left hook but I think you can taker her".(to Barney)

Charlotte, I said a prayer for you. "Put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness!". Spend some time praising God for all he has done and I'll bet you feel alot better, Dear.

Did anyone watch Larry King Live tonight? It was really good. He was interviewing some popular Christian writers and speakers to get their opinions on the possible war in Iraq. They were divided in their opinions. Max Lucado, John MacArthur and Bob James (I think is his name) were on the side of supporting the government's decision to go to war and some other guys that I had never heard of were in favor of sending in more inspectors (how niave). Anyways, it was an interesting discussion.

Prayers for Ro tonight (sure do miss her).

Goodnight, friends.

March 11, 2003 - Msg 12583: If I could, I would lay down my weapon.
If I could, I would turn my cheek,
But I must defend the defensless
until this world belongs to the meek.

If I could I'd embrace every person,
on this earth who ever drew a breath,
but some men would hate and despise me,
for their hearts contain darkness and death.

So, try as I may to be peaceful,
to lay down my sword and my sheild,
there will never be true peace and harmony,
until Jesus' return is fulfilled.

March 11, 2003 - Msg 12584: Hey Boo! You are an awesome lady.

March 11, 2003 - Msg 12585: Howdy, all you sweet, dear people. I'm typing this on a nurse's PC, she was kind enough to log on for me. I just had to let you all know that your prayers were answered in a wonderful way. The results of both invasions --- BENIGN! No cancer. I'm uncomfortable, but it's tolerable, especially with the good news I received. I have a heavy tube stuck in between two ribs, keeping my chest cavity drained of fluid and air, but the doctor found no cancer in there. The other surgeon went into my abdomen with scopes, got a good look at the large spot on the top of my liver, and pronounced it to be a hemangioma, which is a benign lesion. If you've ever seen a youngster with what looked like a wad of bubble gum stuck to their head - that's a hemangioma. It's a little tumor-like thing, that is very, very vascular, and therefore hard to remove because it would bleed at an unbelievable rate. Therefore, nothing will be done about the one on my liver, but as the doctor said, it could very well have been there since I was born, so why bother it now? The main thing is, there is no cancer. We do have one more pathology report from my lung to come back, probably tomorrow, but the doctor said he would be "extremely surprised" if it was anything to be concerned about.

So, dear friends, thank you so much for your prayers. I truly believe that my good news is the direct result of the prayers that have been offered on my behalf. I know that's why I had a peaceful mind going into this, and I'm just as sure that the prayers are the reason for the good outcome. All I can do is say thank you.

If there are misspellings in this, please forgive. I don't have my contacts in, and can't see what I'm typing very well. If Sugarplum was here, I know she would say hey! --Romeena

I am crying and rejoicing! We love you Ro.

Oh, and Asa, I think you are awesome, and you were right. You had a feeling everything would be ok with Ro. I guess you just knew in your heart!

March 12, 2003 - Msg 12590: Hey Bulb, Asa, and Boo, thanks for your prayers. I am feeling perkier today and you're right, Bulb, spring will help. I did see some of my bulbs (LOL) peeking their heads through the soil yesterday! I am unfortunately very affected by light or the lack of it! Romeena's great news has perked me up considerably. I have prayed faithfully. I even prayed for her when I prayed at night with my little girl (using her real name) and my little girl said, "Who's that?" I said, "Someone from the Porch!" March 12, 2003 - Msg 12602: Isn't God good. "His eye is on the sparrow and I know he watches me." My darling boys sing "I talk to Jesus when I pray and he hears me I know." Just a little song they learned in Children's Church, but so very very true.

Asa, my favorite wrassler is Edge. A youngun' with a head full of long beautiful hair. He is from Canada. It is said that years of slamming around in the ring caused him to have a fusion, but there was one particular fall that made him realize he needed to go to the doctor. I reckon they will say how he is doing on Smackdown tomorrow night.

Folks I think I may have offended Trevor. He forwarded some human growth pill ad and it promised weight loss, blah, blah, blah. Well I was really hurt, even though I probably shouldn't have been. So I went into my past and the mental and emotional abuse that started about my weight when I reached puberty. (From my father) I won't go into detail, but I haven't had an email from him since. Let's all pray real hard that he wasn't offended, or think I am a nut. I have really enjoyed corresponding with him and I am afraid I have lost a friend.

Praise the Lord that they found Elizabeth! Her family must be overjoyed.

March 12, 2003 - Msg 12603: Evening porchsters! Great news here on the porch, not only is Romeena fine, but Elizabeth Smart has been found?? I hadn't heard that. Praise God. Now I am asking for more prayers. My son has the same fever that my daughter had last week but he has a terrible rash with it. We thought it was the same viral thing she had and the doctor didn't give her anything so we haven't taken him, but he has been home since Sunday and I'm getting very worried. If the rash and fever aren't gone tomorrow, to the doctor we go! Please pray for him. He is very frail and doesn't eat right most of the time so we really worry when he gets something like this. Thanks, porch!
