April 14, 2003 - Msg 13246: Good morning, everyone! It's an absolutely gorgeous day here on the Texas end of the porch. Golden sunshine, balmy breeze, everything that can possibly bloom is doing so, and every bird for a square mile is at my feeder and birdbath! I love it! Ellen Brown, I'm delighted that your visit went well, and thank you so much for posting those lyrics. I just love that song, and never knew all the words. They are now saved in a file, and I'll get them memorized, you can count on it. They're beautiful.

Amen and amen, Mary Wiggins!

Well, gotta run. My grandbaby's other grandma has him and they're coming by in a few minutes for lunch and a little visit. His parents are in Florida on business, and he's been staying with her. No way I could keep him, because I couldn't lift him - he weighs 38 pounds. Anyway, his mom's parents are my good friends, and isn't that just a wonderful thing? I've known them since our kids were four years old. God is good.

Have a perfectly great day, folks. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

April 14, 2003 - Msg 13248: Good Morning Porch, I just got back from the diner and wanted to send a "Hey" out on my way to work. Vegas looks great from my end of the porch. SPRING IS FINALLY HERE! Romeena it sounds like you are getting along just fine. Take care everyone and have a fantastic Mayberry kinda Day!

April 14, 2003 - Msg 13249: Hello all! Hey Ellen, Great song! I hope you don't mind if, I jug that for the Porch. "Morning Has Broken". By Cat Stevens. Play it a 'purty now a Boys.

Hey Mary, Prayers for your miracle dear.
I bet you don't have any enemies in the world Romeena, just a guess. You bring out the best in folks with your always upbeat self. LOL
Is it windy in sin city Ed? Blowing like crazy here all weekend. Suppose to get some snow tonight. Thats OK. We need the water.

Asa

April 14, 2003 - Msg 13251: Asa, Yeah, it is windy in Las Vegas. Not the kind that will blow you over but you can see the trees, or should I say cactus, blowing a bit. It is supposed to rain this evening. Again, "rain" here is a thimble full but we'll take anything at this point. Lake Mead is down considerably (some say about 60 ft or more) so it would be nice to get a storm to come through and stay awhile. Hope you and everyone else is doing well. Take care and have a Mayberry kinda day.

April 14, 2003 - Msg 13252: A thought just occurred to me and I thought I would share right quick before I go and pick up the boy from his first day back at school.

Why is is alright for Natalie Maines to sing "Goodbye Earl" about a woman poisoning her abusive husband, stuffing his body in the trunk of her car and dumping him in the lake, but not alright for us to go to war to defend ourselves and the many many people who have suffered through Sadam Hussain's evil regime. Well well well Miss Natalie...kinda contradicting yourself, ain't ya? Thump. That was me steppin' off my soapbox. Your lucky, it was a short tantrum today. Not like when we talk about the great gloved one. LOL!
Later ya'll,

April 14, 2003 - Msg 13253: Why, Asa, what a sweet and kind thing to say. You're the cats, you know that? Actually, I would hope you're right, I'd really be unhappy to think that I had an enemy. It's not anything I've done, though, God has just always put me in the midst of some very nice people, just like here on this porch.

fun girl, that's a good point. Isn't it interesting how a person can get their britches hung on their own pitchfork every now and then. That poor little ignorant girl, I'll bet she wishes she had kept her mouth shut that day. Also, I'm tired of hearing people talk about how she just exercised the right that our troops are defending, the right to free speech. Well, that's certainly true, but they're forgetting that along with rights come responsibilities. We may have free speech, but it should be tempered with good taste, common sense and respect, especially when we're representing this country somewhere. I think that little girl just wasn't brought up very well. So there, I said it and I ain't takin' it back!

April 14, 2003 - Msg 13254: Good afternoon - I really liked song. . .it was just peachy after the day I have had.

To let you know about the goats - we also have Skipper and the Professor. Skipper is big and Professor is bigger than Gilligan. The boys just love Gilligan's Island. Okay - so they are TVLand-aholics. It is at least decent programming for the most part.

I agree with Asa, Romeena, you are definitely one special lady. The Wisdom of the Porch! And Plum is our sweetheart! Never let it be said that I didn't agree with Asa just once.

April 14, 2003 - Msg 13255: Afternoon Porch! thought I would drop by & rock with ya'll a bit, it is just Beautiful! on my SW Virginia end of the porch this evening! I love Spring! I had my little baby Cissy, spayed today & she is having a hard time with it, so little & scared, I had to leave work before I started bawling like a big baby over her! You'd think after 25 years of seeing animals spayed & having surgeries, I wouldn't be such a big goober about it, but it sure hurt my feelings & made me feel bad to put her thru that, but at least she won't have any babies anymore & will live a longer, healthier life. I just hope she is still talking to me when she wakes up from the surgery. Off to watch the news.

April 14, 2003 - Msg 13256: You folks are making me blush, (teehee). You're very kind. Wish you could have known my beloved husband, he was indeed a very special man. After his death, one of our daughters summed it up nicely when she said, "Daddy was everybody's cheerleader." You can just take that and run in any direction with it, and you'd be right. He was, indeed.

Mavis, I'm so sorry your little Cissy is having to go through that, but you're so right. It's best for her, for sure. The Plum was spayed at 5 1/2 months, and moped for a day or two, then was back to her old sassy self, and hasn't missed a beat since. I wish I had just half her energy, and she's eight years old.

Well, everyone have a good evening. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

April 14, 2003 - Msg 13265: Well folks, Kyle had a dandy day at school today. His first at middle school after being home-schooled, if you recall. He loved it and the only trouble he had was getting his combination lock to open up on his locker. He said there were lots of nice kids who, seeing his confusion, offered to help him out. So nice. He said he had to have someone help him so often that he thinks half of the school knows the combination to his locker now. Everyone was real nice to him and he is anxious for tomorrow. They had pizza today for lunch, which is his favorite, so I know he has no quarrel with the lunch program. He had no problem with the school work. Did just fine and dandy.
Friends from last year were glad to see him and introduced him to new people. One friend who goes to another school met him at the YMCA tonight and brought a combination lock and they practiced how to do the combination and get it open, so he thinks he will be able to do it without a problem tomorrow. (He was starting out turning the lock in the wrong direction.) Overprotective fungi was ready to go into the school tomorrow and help him out learning how to open the locker, but Kyle says NO WAY...too embarrassing. Anyway, he and Zac worked on it tonight at the Y until he has it down and is ready to go.

Thanks for all your prayers.

I seems as though things are settling down with the war, for which I am grateful. I pray that all will be protected as a new goverment is introduced. What amazes me is how much good I see that has come from this war. The people of Iraq who are so thrilled to be free from this madman. I have know doubt we did the right thing. And yet there are those in the media that are trying to make it look like we are the bad guys. I just don't get it. Do any of you listen to Sean Hannity? He has a national radio show on every day as well as a show on Fox news every night. I sure do like him. I think he's even better than Leanord Blush.

April 16, 2003 - Msg 13280: Wow folks, I never got to far in Math when I was in school and they never taught us the stuff Kyle is learning in school now in the 6th grade. Tonight we had to do a lesson on oblique angles and junk like that. I wound up having to call my sister who got all the way through trig. and ask her a bunch of questions and she explained it all to me over the phone. She said she gets off work early on Thursday and to bring the boy on over and she will give it a shot at trying to explain it to him before they have a test. Heaven knows I ain't gonna be able to do him any good. I am excellent at moral support though. He came home and said they are having some kind of field trip to a "money place" tomorrow. But we didn't get any kind of note and no permission slip. See, this is the kind of stuff we get with a hearing impaired child, he hears one thing and comes up with a totally different story and we never know what he really heard or what was really said. I don't want to be one of those parents who goes in every time he blinks, so I just sent a note that said, Kyle has my permission to go on the field trip if there is one scheduled for today. What ya gonna do? We stressed again tonight that he needs to write everything down in his agenda book. The school provides these neat books to the kids for that exact purpose and he is hesitant to use them. I don't know if he is just to lazy or what? It's so frustrating. I think if he doesn't start using his agenda book then maybe he will have to start being grounded from something. Otherwise, school is going great. He had much better success with his locker today.

Well, ironing board time folks.

April 16, 2003 - Msg 13284: Good morning, everyone! Salty, I'm so sorry about your kitty. Don't give up hope, he may come home yet. Ed, hang in there. It really hurts to lose one of these little furkids, especially when you have to make the decision. I've done it several times, and it never gets any easier. The best help usually comes in the form of another little friend, not to replace the one you lost, but to make its own place and give you a new focus.

fun girl, it sounds like Kyle is going to be okay. He may have bumps in the road along the way, but keep your perspective. Remember that kids who are not hearing-impaired have a lot of the same problems. They misunderstand instructions, forget things, hit subjects they have to struggle with, all the same problems. He has an interested parent, and that's a big advantage that a lot of kids don't have.

TOM! So nice to see you. Your sweet presence is always a pleasure. Rafe, we enjoyed your visit, too. Hope you'll do it more often. Asa, the Plum says she has some free time today, and would be happy to come and help you, as long as the tasks don't require someone with thumbs. She is a bit challenged in that department. Also, she said to see if you have any carrots that need to be eaten. She excels in that endeavor.

Well, off I go. Several errands to run today. Have a great day, friends. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

April 16, 2003 - Msg 13287: Hey all, sounds like everyone is in great spirits here on the porch. Romeena, thank you again for your kindness. You always put a positive perspective on things and I thank you. Glad to see everyone is doing well. Anyone got any big plans for the Easter Holiday Weekend? We usually go to church and have a big supper after. I was raised Southern Baptist, my mother(who lives in Missouri) is Episcopal, and my girlfriend and her family (here in Vegas) are Catholic. So I go to the Catholic church with my girlfriend and her family on the holidays. Her family are die hard Catholics so I don't think they're quite ready for the Baptist church yet. My girlfriend and I, when it's just us, try to take turns on Sundays. One week Baptist, the other week Catholic. It seeems to work out fine. My girlfriend likes the preacher and he likes her so she enjoys the Baptist Church. The Catholic Church does things different than I'm used too but they have a good fellowship. Their minister has a way of telling great sermons, with irony and humor, that include just about everyone. So no matter what the denomination, you enjoy the service. Well, I better get back to trading here. Ya'll take care and have a wonderful, Mayberry kinda day!

She should alos let them know that an overhead projector is the best advantage for HI kids so they can see the teacher's face and the notes at the same time. Also, if he isn't using an assignment book, he should be and the teacher should check to make sure everything is written down. She shouldn't write it down - Kyle should but it doesn't take 30 seconds to make sure assignments and projects are written down. If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

Hazel, I am sorry to hear of your recent illness, you have been missed! I am grateful when I hear of couples who are married 20 plus years. I think that is great! My parents, Lord willing, will have 57 years this year.
By the way Ed, Daddy was Southern Baptist and Momma was Catholic and they formed perfectly into the Church of Christ (independent branch - you all knew I was independent!). Of course, they never went to Vegas - neither have I. Gambling is at our back door here in Indy. Our school and my son's school, as well as several other schools, get alot of grants from the riverboats. It sure does help with special services and computers. We have three boats within one hour's drive from my house (actually it is closer but because of the increased traffic it takes longer to get there.) April 16, 2003 - Msg 13298: Poor homemaker, sounds like you got your fingers in too many pots. I just want to say that I wish we had a hearing impaired teacher like you around here. The one we got is worse than nothing at all. Last year Kyle's teacher even commented that she struck terror in the poor kid. She said he became a nervous wreck whenever she walked into the room. So, for now, and I am almost afraid and ashamed to tell you this, we have declined hearing impaired service. He cried at the thought of returning to school if he had to deal with that woman. So I told him we would try it without hearing impaired services and see how it went. We did have a serious talk today with him and explained to him that is is absolutley CRUCIAL that he use the agenda book and if he doesn't write down every assignment in every class, no t.v. whatsoever. Turns out that there was no field trip today. There is a place called the money store which where they trade points earned by good behavior and good grades and they can trade for treats and goodies. Anyway it was an easy misunderstanding. He had never heard the term before and so he thought they were going somewhere. Turns out it's just something they do at school. Later I am sure I will be able to laugh about it. Well he got a C on his math paper that I helped him with and folks, let me tell ya, that was the most beautiful C I ever did C. LOL I am getting the hang of it a little better and tonight we only needed help on one question. Lucky for us we have a teacher who lives right across the street. She is not working right now as she has two toddlers at home, but we did have a math question tonight and we went over and she helped us and said any time he needed help, just to send him right over. Don't the Lord send wonderful people into our lives? Just like each and every one of you.

Prayers for the man who hit me in the accident. I just talked to the insurance adjuster and he had spoken to him today and there has been a death in the family. Poor man. That on top of what he has been through already. Please remember him and his family in your prayers.

Congrats Hazel on your anniversary. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the mayor don't get to the bed jacket fore your hubby does. Hey BDJ, could you and they boys do "Why Don't You Haul Off and Love Me One More Time" for Mr and Mrs Hazel.

Yep. That's what a told myself.

April 17, 2003 - Msg 13305: Good mornin', my porch pals

Romeena, I was looking back over some posts and noticed you talked about a "cootie catcher". I looked it up on a search engine, and poof! I can't believe it! I never knew WHAT to call that thing when I was a kid! I would also turn the thing up like it was "facing" someone, and put eyes on it....like a puppet! I even made little tiny ones that were very difficult to manipulate, but they were SO cute!

I think everybody here agrees about how precious Romeena is....I wonder if we can name her "Ms. Porch Queen" (kinda like "Miss Potato Queen"), and we'll make precious little Sugarplum the official Porch Princess and/or Carrot Queen!!! Do you think we need to borry that votin' stuff from The Regal Order of The Golden Door To Good Fellowship? I know we don't need that black ball in there....nobody'd use it!

Fun Girl, as for Natalie Maines, I don't know if censors would necessarily "get me" on here, but what I would say about her would not be very nice here. The one thing I will say is that I think she is a hypocrite, and I ain't takin' it back! While we're at it, don't you think the word "hypocrite" is spelled really strange? Kinda like the word "hors d'oeuvres....straange....oooooddddd.......currrrious! But even with all that, the one rule that I always forget is " 'I' before 'E' except after 'C', and 'E' before 'N' in 'Chicken' ".

BDJ, I'm so glad about you finding your friend again! In honor of your renewed friendship and ALSO in honor of the way we all feel about YOU (I'm getting misty here), how's about playin' "You've Got A Friend"?. Oh, that's a good'un! We'll jump in where we can, and we'll haaaang on!

Hey, De§...great to see you on here! I hadn't gotten around to writing to you, but thanks so much for forwarding that "not-so-precision-guided e-mail" to Romeena for me. You're the cats!

*Rafe Hollister, you are a bird in this world and a site for sore eyes! Don't be such a stranger!

Salty Dog, I'm so sorry you've been feelin' poorly, but I'm glad to hear you ain't smoked since Saturday! WOW! Are you still hanging in there? Shoot....if you are, the really bad actual nicotine withdrawal is already done and done! You keep it up! Water....drink lots of water! I HATE water, but it actually works for me! They say it helps flush the nicotine out of your system, plus it gives you something to do with your hands.
I hope you're feeling lots better, but I hope you still haven't smoked! I'm proud of ya!!!
I do pray that your kitty returns ....my heart aches for you. I wouldn't give up either....these young'uns sure have minds of their own, you know?

HazelCongrats on your anniversary yesterday! I'm really sorry to hear you've been sick, and i sure hope you are better now! I hope you can take this weekend to just relax and recuperate some. I'll be thinking about ya!

Mavis, dear....how is Cissy doing today? As she improves, you'll feel better too. Just remember, "The quality of mercy is not strained -- it droppeth like the gentle rain from Heaven." You're not talking to a jerk, you know.

Hey to Ellen Brown, Charlotte Tucker, Asa, Ed Sawyer, and all the rest of you precious porchsters.

Asa, thanks for doing the shopping for Hazel! You always know just the right gift to give...a pineapple skinner...how thoughtful!

Hazel, I hope it was a good anniversary, sorry my wish is a day late and a dollar short!

How that bush even survived considering the lack of care I've given it, I don't know. Maybe Mr. Weaver has been slipping back there and tending to it. *Mavis

There stands a rose down in your garden
You left it there so all alone
It's been neglected, feels unwanted
Since no love to it is shown.

It's beauty now is fastly fading
Once it was the brightest red
It's with'ring fast now, it's head is bowing
Since no kind words to it are said.

Chorus:
Please don't neglect the rose in your garden
Show it your love every day
And it will bloom for you in all it's beauty
And it will not fade away

I guess by now you know my story
Don't neglect a love that's true
For it may prove to be the sweetest flower
That will ever bloom for you.

Be it your mother, sister or brother
Husband, wife or a little child
Or it may be your own true lover
You've neglected all the while.

April 18, 2003 - Msg 13329: The best sermon I ever heard preached. . .

It's Friday. .
but SUNDAY IS COMING!

(Jesus was put to death on Friday and ROSE AGAIN on SUNDAY!)

hm

April 18, 2003 - Msg 13330: Good morning Porch,
It is Good Friday, a very rainy day here on my end of the porch. Seems kind of appropriate this year. As homemaker said, however, Jesus rose again on Sunday, praise be to God! When I was a child we would spend Good Friday in church or quietly at home, between the hours of 12:00 and 3:00. There doesn't seem to be as much of that practiced as when I was young. My daughter who is now 21 just told me she always hated having to stay inside and spend the time in quiet reflection during these hours. She is going to see a movie called "Holes" and she wanted to take my 5 year old son along with her. They are going at 1:30, so of course, I told her no. She respected my wishes, which I was grateful for. I guess I just feel that this is an important time for people who are Christians, and it didn't seem right to spend it at a movie theater watching a movie. I feel like an old fuddy dud sometimes, but that's okay, cause I AM an old fuddy dud!

On Sunday, after church the whole gang will descend upon my home again and we will have ham and all the trimmings. I make Easter baskets for all my nieces and nephews, and then they have to look for them. They seem to really enjoy it, and I always try to find some little toy to include in the baskets. This year it is some kind of bubbles that you blow and then they harden so they can play with them, OUTSIDE, of course! (I sure hope the weather co-operates!)
I hope everyone here has wonderful plans with family and friends.

In humble thanks for my Lord and Savior, who gave so much to me and all other Christians 2000 years ago, and every day since,
Mary Wiggins

April 18, 2003 - Msg 13338: Any old tramps down there??

April 19, 2003 - Msg 13339: Oh, my, what would I do without you folks!? TOM, our poet laureate, and Asa, with his humor and encouraging ways, and the inimitable possum, and Hazel, our quote queen, and Charlotte, and Mary Wiggins, and Mavis, and homemaker, and Briscoe and fun girl, and Miss Ellen, and De§, and Sterling, and the too-infrequent Rafe, and Salty, and of course bulbsnatcher, and our new friends, Ed and Blonde from a bottle! (Whew!) You folks are just the cats!

Work last night about wore me out, but I made it through the shift. Whenever I got tired, I just reminded myself that I could be sick from chemo instead, but praise God, that isn't needed. Amazing how a thought like that just perks you right up! (teehee)

He is Risen, indeed! I especially enjoy all the music at this time of year, and one of my favorites was echoed in someone's comment above -Joy comes in the morning. I'm sure you all know it - "Hold on, my child. Joy comes in the morning. Weeping only lasts for the night. Hold on, my child. Joy comes in the morning. The darkest hour means dawn is just in sight!" Mmmm! Love that song.

My husband and I participated in our church's Christmas Pageant every year for about fourteen years. It was quite a presentation, cast of about 150, was televised twice, very professional, and beautifully done. My dear husband was one of the three Kings, and an impressive sight he was, at 6'4" and about 260 lbs, with a golden crown and flowing red velvet robes with a glittery gold trailing cape, and a canopy carried by pages, the works. He grew his own beard for the play each year, and really looked wonderful. Well, I digress - sorry! Anyway, our pageant didn't stop at the manger, we went through the life of Christ, including the crucifixion (not a dry eye in the house during this scene), the burial and the resurrection. We even had flying angels for several years. The point of all this is that one year the choir sang Hold On, My Child during the scene at the foot of the cross. The choir was in Biblical costume, and we were all gathered on a "hillside" around the cross. It was impressive, and a joy to be in it, and that song implanted itself in my heart's list of favorites.

Well, I do run on! Have a lovely Saturday, folks! Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

April 19, 2003 - Msg 13340: Hey Romeena, I could listen to your memory's all day. You have some great ones. You are a special lady indeed.
