March 24, 2005 - Msg 27818: Hazel- that's a classic ep (aren't they all?). Anything with Ernest T. cracks me up. My favorite line from a few nights ago, when Barn is going on about Morelli's, is when he says "you know they'll let you take a bottle in there." Andy: "did you?" Barn: "NNOOO!" The way he delivered that line was Don Knotts at his best.. Well, headin' home. Y'all have a great night. Spot- I'm expecting another big breakfast from you in the morning.

March 24, 2005 - Msg 27819: Hazel, thanks so much for the welcome and since my name is really Rowena, you can see why many times I am teased and called Romeena! LOL So people have shortened me to Ro but I also answer to Aunt Bea since I'm a lot like her. Give away little bags of food and always clucking around those I love. I love Aunt Bea's unselfish heart. Also, thanks Rev, Jr for the wonderful info on what the Blue Plate special was......do you know where the term "blue plate" came from? I think people go to Floyd's Barber Shop for the latest gossip or to Sarah. Then there was the episode where Opie's school paper had some really hot news items and Aunt Bea, Andy and Barn just happened to meet at the city trash dump with flashlights to get the scoop....remember? LOL. Aunt Bea aka Ro aka Rowena

March 24, 2005 - Msg 27820: Remember when Otis Campbell landed at Aunt Bea's "Rock"? Warden Bea snapped her fingers and said, "Hop to it"! and Otis didn't know he had it so good before! LOL I can mock Aunt Bea to a "t", especially when my sons were growing up. Yep, we are a family of fans! When my oldest son was in college, he actually found friends his age that were also big Andy Griffith fans. Our electrician is also one and we have a great time quoting our favorite lines. ...Aunt Bea

March 24, 2005 - Msg 27823: Welcome, Aunt Bea. I appreciate you giving up "Romeena", though based on your real name you do have a strong case for keeping it. I've been "Romeena" here for many years, the name has almost become an alter-ego. It's my screen name on many things, including email, and I use it at work on computer-related things. If someone called me by that name on the street, I would respond for sure. Anyway, thanks for being so gracious, and welcome to the porch!

I slept two puny little hours this afternoon after being up since yesterday morning, woke up when I heard some flats of bedding plants calling my name, and have been in the yard ever since. Only one more flat to plant, but the mosquitoes won. Tomorrow is another day.

I think I'll check out the diner and see what tonight's blue plate special is. I'm hungry!

March 24, 2005 - Msg 27825: I had a lovely little surprise this evening. Right after dusk, still a little light, but not much, a small owl came and perched on the rim of the birdbath which is just outside my window. Because it was so dark, I could see him only in silhouette against the colored lights on my back fence, but by using some binoculars I got a better view. Somehow they seemed to amplify the little bit of light, as well as making him appear closer and larger. He's small, just a bit bigger than a pigeon, but definitely an owl. He had a nice bath, then sat and fluffed and dried out, then flew away. It was a lovely moment. I must note here that at no time did he appear to be upside down, so I don't consider him to be a bad omen. In fact, I think it's terrific that he dropped by to visit. I felt blessed.

March 24, 2005 - Msg 27826: Hey to all! I had some of Colonel Harvey's Elixir and boy does it work! I've been twirling on the piano stool singing "Toot, toot, tootsie" and feeling better by the minute....I don't think you would need that trained voice, Romeena if you'd take a little nip of that stuff!!. I'll leave a half empty bottle on the porch if anyone needs a pick me up. It would probably perk up that blue plate special, too, Romeena! Loved that story about the little owl. I've noticed that the birds are singing at night, here in Louisiana, too. Or am I just hearing things? I'm going to soak my cucumbers in any leftover potion, tonight. I'm after that blue ribbon at the fair, this year, so look out Clara! I'll have a few to pass around by Easter so get ready to pucker up. Lots of luck to you and yours! Romeena, whether upside-down or not, my wife freaks out if she sees an owl. I guess it is considered in her tribe that the owl is a messenger of death. I try to tell her, ...it's a bird! A bird who's just trying to feed himself(or herself) and his(her) family, and getting rid of pesky mice along the way. :)

March 25, 2005 - Msg 27832: Awwwww, Sterling, that's too bad. I'm sorry your wife has had such a notion instilled in her. Owls are such lovely creatures, it's a shame she can't enjoy them, and one only needs to fear them as a messenger of death if one happens to be a small rodent! I'm guessing he's been around here for a while now and I just haven't seen him. Remember when I was having a problem with the woodrats in my back yard? I was even live-trapping and relocating them. Well, I haven't seen one in several months. Thanks, Little Owl.

Well, off I go. Gotta run by Weaver's and see if I can find a new outfit to wear to a service-award dinner for hospital employees tonight. If I'm lucky, I'll find something that can double as an Easter outfit for church. I wonder if I should get some earrings? Do you think the other women will be wearing earrings? And gloves, I need some new gloves......

Takin' my daughter to find an Easter skirt today too. That's always an adventure. She's a large girl, not fat at all but athletic and tall and doesn't fit into those cutesy, delicate little clothes that most of her friends buy. Plus she's also very modest (this is a good thing) and doesn't want her belly showing or her neckline low, etc. I'm glad, but do you know how hard it is to find clothes like that? I almost need to hire some amish to sew for her! Hazel, I'll try to get back on the subject...the quotes you started off this page with are classic (as are most TAGS quotes!). I also love all the references to Aunt Bee and her elixir. That's one of my favorite eps as is Aunt Bee the Warden. pipeman, we're following the Illini all the way to #1 (we hope). However that Tucker from Milwaukee played his heart out last night. Wish it'd get nicer on this end of the porch! Not too cold but dreary, awful dreary.

And alls I'm thinking is, "geeze, isn't there a statute of limitations or something on how much time passes between when you first see the owl to when someone you know dies?"

The funny part is, even though owls freak her out, she an absolute fanatic Harry Potter fan, and there are tons of owls in those films. Go figure.;)

Yes, the bees are swarming more here in AZ because of the heavy rains. I don't think the owl is a sign but the rider on a white horse going east to west might be. Charlotte it is refreshing to hear about a young lady that is modest. It's rainy and cold here today. I'm dressed in a sweatshirt and jeans, and was cold walking to the store from the car! Crazy weather!! And I still have that flat of petunias to plant. Oh, well, the flat is sitting out where the plants are getting the benefit of the rain, so they'll be okay until the weather clears up.

Gotta make some shortbread to take to my comadre's house tomorrow for dinner after church. Sugarplum wants to play, wonder which I should do first??

Aunt Bea, I'm definitely going to wear earrings tomorrow, but I may skip the gloves. I always manage to get them so dirty, and besides, I don't have any to match my outfit. So, earrings it is, but no gloves.

Andy & Barney find out he's over there and go see him in order to coax him back to Mayberry. "Mr. Drucker" is the other guy locked up with Otis. For the life of me I can't recall the gist of the episode-only the scene with them in that other jail! But I get points for answering correctly don't I? I'm just not hitting on all cylinders today! Ha!
Happy Easter to each & every one of you.Wanted to go ahead and convey this because I may not be on the porch tomorrow due to the bad T-storms,tornadoes,etc. that are supposed to come

March 26, 2005 - Msg 27863: What on earth is TV Land thinking??? A little while back, before "Chasing Farrah" actually hit the airways, I commented that I had no intention of chasing her. Now it's actually on the air, and I thought perhaps, just to be fair, I should watch it, hoping it wouldn't be as lame as I thought it would be. Well! Lame doesn't start it! That is absolutely the dumbest thing I've ever seen, and I can't believe anyone would allow themselves to be shown to be that vapid and apparently, utterly useless. If she really is like the show would have us believe, then she's a waste of space. I tried to find a link on TV Land's website where I could send an email, but wisely, they have none. At least none that I could find. If I'm stepping on somebody's new favorite show here, I apologize, but I just don't get it. I think TV Land should "dance with the one what brung 'em", and continue to show the classic old reruns. What about "Barney Miller" and "Carter Country" and to replace Farrah, I'd even watch "My Mother, the Car!" Actually, after my stomach turned a couple of times, I switched over to Boomerang and caught a really funny Roadrunner cartoon, and even an old Speedy Gonzales. Definitely preferable to Farrah.

March 27, 2005 - Msg 27876: I'll take a thigh and some potato salad, Aunt Bee. Not much for ribs though, so someone else take my share of those. I believe I'll have some of that chocolate cake and some of Charlotte's pumpkin pie! MY favorite!

I ain't chasing Farrah, either. Guess you could say I'm skipping Farrah, or avoiding Farrah, etc... Ro, on TVLands website, if you go to the site index/menu on the right hand side of the homepage, it has an option of "Write To Us". Hope that helps. :D

Hey to miss sherry - stay safe, spot!

My hubby's just finishing up with the tile work in our game room! Woohoo! Carpet next and we're almost done!

Yes, Paul henning was quite a creator and producer. Beverly Hillbillies, pettycoat Junction, Green acres etc.. He was 93 years young and amid todays tv sewer (ie : Chasing farrah, +"reality" ad nauseum) he WILL SURELY be missed!
Thanks MD and pipeman for your thoughts too.
MAYOR pipeman, you should definitely issue a decree for dear Paul! Google search will give you his story, quite a man.

Hey to "Deacon" MDC! ; ) I haven't been to a Sunrise service in probably 25 years. But I remember going to the drive in and putting the speakers in the car to hear the service. Showing up extra early meant you could go to the snack bar and pick up a homemade cinnamon roll. Mmm!

You're welcome on that info, Ro!

March 28, 2005 - Msg 27894: You got em Rev Jr. Sorry to hear of her passing!
Prayers for your dad, family and for any ailing porchsters.
Welcome Shawn! If that is a riddle, I dont have an answer. sorry.
AFD, in the desert, it is sooo neat to watch that sunrise, see some good church "actors" and a cardboard and paper mache rock formation hiding the sun's first rays as all chairs face east, then the "stone" rolls back and that burst of sun comes streaming thru the opening of the "tomb" with the actor folks falling back. It is very powerful, and i suggest every church do it. All are kinda "blinded" by the light, but it quickly rises past the opening and is again semi-blocked by the cardboard for a bit!
You all have a great evening.

March 28, 2005 - Msg 27895: Shawn, if you are thinking of the signs on the front doors of the court house, perhaps that is the answer you are after. However, just two years ago, he donated them to the Andy Griffith Museum/Visitors Center in Mount Airy, NC.

If you all are wondering what's happening with the TOM project, the answer is nothing, so far. Haven't heard a word from that pastor in his town. If I don't hear by the first of next week, I'll try another church. Surely someone will be willing to help us. I just can't bear to think that TOM might be just sitting there, day after day, with no way to interact with the world in any positive way.

Well, I'm off to bed. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Some porchsters interested in college basketball may have noticed that Michigan State has made it to the final four. The news has already been carrying stories around here that they will have an increased police show of force this weekend. Oh, and Shawn Burkett, I am sorry, but I have no idea what you are talking about! Maybe if you clarify your question?

March 29, 2005 - Msg 27909: Mornin Porchsters. I really do appreciate all your thoughts and prayers. Please keep Dad in your prayers. I can count on one hand the times he's ever gotten really choked up. (and I don't mean that in a bad way, he's just very strong and has always been there for everyone else). Last night was one of those times. I think the reality of both his parents and both of his siblings being gone has hit home. Here's the kicker. My aunt had requested that Dad conduct the service. He really needs the strength. Thanks guys for all your support.

Yes Dix, sometimes those who don't speak up need prayer the most. Welcome to the new porch sitters, you'll like it here! Hope everyone had a Blessed Easter - HE IS RISEN!

I have been in the big city (ATL) helpin' out my parents. Dad has terminal cancer, but at 87 he's banking on the abdominal enurysm to take him out quickly - he's refusing to have it fixed. He's in a great deal of pain, but seems to be tolerating the chemo well. The shingles on his face though are draining him - very painfulfor 9 months now. (I asked him if the Dr gave him any topical numbing cream for it and he said yes, but won't use it because it makes his face numb!! D'oh!) Prayers for him are greatly appreciated. Mom is handling it very bravely as she went thru cancer 15 years ago. But gee whiz, they don't see the dirt and mold and don't seem to mind the bugs... while they were out one day I sprayed for bugs and cleaned as best I could. After I left, a brother told me their coffee pot is rusted out!! Wish he'd have let me know while I was there. I need about a month there to get it cleaned up (I can only do a little at a time or else I get BAD pain). Just a shame to know that they are in such need but too proud to ask anyone for help.

March 29, 2005 - Msg 27921: The porch was getting a little colorful for a minute

March 29, 2005 - Msg 27922: Miss Dixie, I was just a young'un during WWII, but I do remember my mom and grandmother having ration books, and I heard a lot of discussion about it. They had stamps that were torn out and surrendered when buying certain commodities, like sugar, butter, gasoline and other things. I'm sure you've found all this in your research. There were a lot of jokes about the subject. I remember a family down the street who had waaaay more kids than they could afford to feed, and the mother of those kids was always trying to beg stamps from the neighbors, so she could get what she needed for her huge family. My grandmother used to say that it was too bad that kids weren't rationed.

I woke up this afternoon with an arthritis attack, both hands so tender I can hardly type, and lower back under Arthur's influence as well. Got to go to work, already called, no way to get out of it without taking precious vacation time, so guess I'll hobble on in and take care of some more women who should be rationing their offspring. Hmmm. Something is wrong with this picture.

Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

March 29, 2005 - Msg 27923: Dixie - there is a new book out called The War Came to Plum STreet that talks about rationing. Maybe you could look it up in the library or tell your prof that due to rationing - you could only write 7 pages.

Back yard is lovely and lively today. Flowers blooming everywhere - impatiens, pansies, petunias, geraniums, dianthus, iris, snapdragons, roses, verbena, azalea, tulips, daffodils, hyacinth, crocus and cyclamen. That's what I can see from my window. Add to that the antics of a pair of silly little squirrels, and some pigeons, doves and sparrows (at the moment) and it's a picture no artist could paint. The grass is an emerald green backdrop for it all, and the rosemary and mint are flourishing, too. When I go out there, I give them a light whack with a stick, and the scent just fills the yard. Wasn't God good to us, giving us all the visual beauty and then adding fragrance as well?

Well, I have errands to run and things to do. I'm leaving tomorrow to go spend the weekend with my daughters down in Fredericksburg, so may not see you until Sunday. Everyone be careful, and have a great weekend. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena
