June 25, 2005 - Msg 29304: Good morning - am I the first one on the porch this morning? I hope everyone is watching TVLand. They've got that Anniversary Special thing going, and I had forgotten just how good some of those old shows really were. Just watched "Dobie Gillis" and was laughing the whole time. When the spoiled rich kid is named Chatsworth Osborne, and his family has a butler named Trembly, you know it's going to be funny. And his over-the-top, socialite mother is none other than our own dear Mrs. Wiley. I hope TVLand will put some of these shows in their regular lineup. Silly, yes. Campy and funny, yes. Clean, too. What more could one ask?

My, it is sure good to see the porch so "nice and full!"
Fires this way are still burning! 150,000 acres so far. Our wet winter brought lots of growth to the desert highlands, and now it is all tinder dry, especially after this week of 110+ degrees! Today is the day where in 1990 it got to our all time recorded record of 122!!
Now that's hot, and i do mean DANG hot! haha
Pappa bear. Good idea! I dont think I got your message yet. Was it my work phone?
Here's another idea that I just did this weekend.
At the bottom of my Will, I penciled in for my executor to go to www.mayberry.com and tell the front porch of my passing. Also for the western site, hotmail, and the other boards that I frequent. This way, I know that that is a done deal.
Illness is another matter. If you go to my email at dipper40@hotmail.com I will give any of you my number to call if i am awol for a month or so.
This is a caring porch and I think you are all the CATS! Just ID yourself with your porch name to help figure out who you are!
APB for sterling, auh2o, fungirl, Ed sawyer, BOO, Alyce, and others who are moving and shaking!
Good Sabbath to you all, Prayers for rain, troops saftey, all porchsters and familys.

We are all fine and just finished a week of VBS at our church. I wanted to say thanks for your prayers. My little boy did well in the private school we put him in and even made the A honor role, which is quite an answer to prayer, given his learning disability (just wanted to share that bit of news with my buddies).

Well, we are still living with the parents and have not sold our house yet or begun building the new one....some day soon, though, Lord willing.

Hope you all have a wonderful week and don't forget "Ol' Boo". Bye!

June 27, 2005 - Msg 29326: Yes, ky girl, I'm going back to Mongolia. I'll be gone the last week of July and first week of August, going to the same place as last year. I'd be interested to know where the young men you mentioned went. Mongolia is not highly populated, and the missionary we work with has teams coming over almost the year around, so it's possible they were in the same place. If you can find the article, see if it mentions Change the World Ministries, or the towns of Darkhan or Hongor. Wouldn't it be something if they were in the same place? Ours is classified as a medical mission trip also, though that's really only part of our intent in being there.

Welcome to our visitors - please come again and make yourselves at home. Boo, it's good to hear from you, friend. I'm glad Sean is doing well, and I'll bet Baby Girl is growing like a weed. Say hello to them and Bruce for me, OK?

Well, off to bed. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

June 27, 2005 - Msg 29327: Good morning everyone - today is my 11th anniversary but I bet Elvis doesn't show up singing blue suede shoes. We went to see Buddy Jewell over the weekend and bought a new window AC for our living room. We don't have central air (or even a furnace for the winter - we chop wood and lots of it for our wood stove)and it was getting a might warm this weekend.

Please be in prayer for my sister in lay and her family. Her mother passed away 3 months ago from conditions connected with alzheimers - she had been bedridden and comatose for years. Her father has unexpectedly passed away this past week. He was 85 years old. This has been a great shock to the family. They do not know if he fell or if he had had a heart attack but he had not been sick. It is very difficult for them right now. So I will be visiting the funeral home today.

So good to see you Boo!! We have missed you and FUNGIRL ( the other INdiana connection) and Mavis.

Oh and Spot - our next home will be total electric with a heat pump and central air. I am giving up the wood chopping business! Ha Ha

June 28, 2005 - Msg 29348:
Hazel- dont want to start a moulage with ya, but if you look at history, the only time the phrase "separation of church and state" was even remotely used was in a private letter from Thomas Jefferson to another statesman and all he said was to talk about the POSSIBILITY of a a "wall of separation." A google search will confirm this fact. It is NOT in the US Const-tution! The only time any thing is mentioned is in the amendment that says CONGRESS shall ESTABLISH no religion.
The big 3 religions, Judism, Christianity and Islam all recognize the ten commandments as the
guiding force of right and wrong. All of our monuments built in Washington DC have biblical references on them. The Washington Monument for example, has a Bible verse on every step going up,
and at the very top it says "Praise God" in Latin.
Funny, how only in the last 40 years this separation thinking has suddenly become the "law." It is not the law, and that is why their rulings are so dumb. Even the one made yesterday is full of inconsistancies, 10 c's are ok at this location but not at that, etc.
History proves this. We were founded on freedom OF religion and NOT freedom FROM religion.
Sorry for the moulage folks.
TAGS is full of Opie praying scenes, church scenes, religious songs etc, so I think it's is ok to sound off on this site on the truth of our founding fathers as we approach Independence Day. According to recorded documents they prayed and fasted throughout the writing of the Const-tution and many of the federalist papers. God has blessed America and I hope He continues to.

June 29, 2005 - Msg 29354: I love the way this porch can discuss sensitive issues and still remain friends. It's the Mayberry Way! Here's my two cents' worth:

Hazel's friends and co-workers, and ky girl's friends and kin have a serious problem. They're in a tough situation. They're in the position of living by and enforcing laws that have been made or interpreted (wrongly, I think, in many cases) by a group of people who have the final say in this country regarding laws. Unfortunately, many of those people - the Supreme Court judges - achieved their lofty position by hook and crook, and don't always exemplify the best and wisest this country has to offer. Nevertheless, they're there, and they're there for life! That forces Hazel's and Ky girl's friends to do things, render judgments and enforce laws that may very well be onerous to them, but they have no choice. Of course, it's ridiculous that the question of removing the Ten Commandments from every appearance in a government building has even come up. However, thanks to a few old doddering dunderheads over the years, that's how the law (?) is currently interpreted. Still, in an attempt to be fair to those dunderheads, we need to remind ourselves that the Great Deceiver is alive and well, and can make good appear to be evil, and evil appear to be good, to those who are not steeped in God's law and in His will. I believe that in most cases, the misinterpreters really believed they were doing right. The poor things, may God have mercy on their souls.

All this only serves to support the precept that we must be very, very careful who we elect to the Presidency, because that decision will trickle down to the Supreme Court whenever a vacancy arises, and the decisions made by that group of people will very heavily control the future of this country.

There, I've said it, and I ain't takin' it back. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Although I do not agree with the high court's ruling, I can say it doesn't surprise me - given the makeup of the court and the liberalism that runs amuck in our land. I am sure that George Washington, being the Christian man that he was, would not be satisfied with the path this country has taken.
And as far as Kentucky goes - we visit Pulaski county alot (my husband's kin are from there and his great grandfather was the LAW there as well) - they are pretty hard headed in that county so it wouldn't surprise me if they left them up.

June 29, 2005 - Msg 29358:
One more thing to show where we have come from and where we are heading, as I mentioned, and I have been to DC two times, our monumnets are full of Biblical references, EXCEPT, the WWII memorial which was completed last year. It has Roosevelt's speech about "a day that will live in infamy." At the end of the speech, he said "we will win thru to vitory, so help me God." Well guess what folks?, the "so help me God" is not on THIS memorial! There was NO LAW stopping them because it was built with PRIVATE donations!
It was the stupid political correctness that is even creeping into our churches.
Ok, that's all I'm saying. Be vigilant! And God Bless!

An excellent read concerning The Ten Commandments is Former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore's book "So Help Me God". Definitely eye-opening on a lot of things. He gives some good definitions between the "rule of man" and "rule of law", and there is definitely a difference.

Hope you all having a great week - and surviving the heat. It's almost 100 here in MO. I'm looking forward to fall already - and I'm usually not one to complain about the heat.

Well, just stopped by quick like - I'll check in more later.

June 30, 2005 - Msg 29364: Yippeee! I visited a "pond store" yesterday, bought some AlgaeFix and some blue tint, and the water in my little fountain and pond is now clear as a bell, and with luck, will stay that way. Products are supposd to be safe for birds, fish and squirrels, too. The blue tint, of all things, supposedly acts as shade to keep the sun from charging up another algae bloom. Will wonders never cease!

OK, tuning up my whiner/nagger, preparing to call Verizon about the notorious leaning pole. The power company has exited the scene, as the pole bears a tag that says it belongs to Verizon, the phone people. Never mind that the power company's lines are attached, and will go down with everything else when the pole crashes. I'd think that would confer a bit of ownership in their minds, but evidently not. Seems the two companies have an agreement - you fix your poles, and we'll fix ours, even though we both use them. Well, personally, I don't care if Peter Pan flies down and replaces the pole, as long as it gets done. So, back to my phone campaign. Wish me luck.

June 30, 2005 - Msg 29375: Hi, all. I just have to share this! I had a double blessing last night. Remember a while back, when I told you about the little owl who came in just at dark and sat a while on my birdbath? Well, last night he returned, and he brought a friend, perhaps a mate. They sat there for about ten minutes, two little owl shapes silhouetted against the landscape lights along the back fence. The birdbath is about fifteen feet from my window, but it was pretty dark and all I could see was their shapes, mostly. Soooo - today, I went to a store I know of, and bought myself a night vision scope!! They had them on sale for half price, so it wasn't too awful, and now I can observe my little owls very well. They'll look green, of course, but I should be able to see them in great detail. Not only the owls, but any other night creatures out there. Should be very interesting.

As for the pole, a man came a few minutes ago, examined the situation, and agreed that it should have been remedied long ago. It is now going to require the removal of a section of my neighbor's fence to get a truck in there, and a great deal of effort and inconvenience on everyone's part. A year ago, the pole might have been braced or reinforced, and the whole problem solved, but when we asked for that, we were told it wasn't necessary, that the pole was essentially solid. Now it has to be replaced. Hmmmm. Sometimes old ladies do know what they're talking about. Oh, well, it's their problem now, all I have to do is nag, and I can do that very well. Just call me Jennie Boone. (No offense, Jennie.)

June 30, 2005 - Msg 29378: Storms pop up ky girl....owl ro...neat...SPOT

June 30, 2005 - Msg 29379: No, a night vision scope is one that allows you to see in near or even total darkness. It's like what you see on the news, or a wildlife show, when the image looks green. It gathers ambient light, even if it's just starlight, and uses it to project the image within the scope. In total darkness, the scope has an "illuminator" - I have no idea how it works - which provides an invisible light source and still creates the image. It does magnify a little, like a telescope, but it literally allows you to see in the dark. I can hardly wait! I'd have to go into a closet to test it, because there are extreme cautions about not removing the lenscap in anything other than darkness. So, I haven't!

Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

June 30, 2005 - Msg 29380: Oh, for plain old magnification, I do have binoculars. They work, but not in the dark. --Romeena

June 30, 2005 - Msg 29384: ky girl, I'm sad to say the night vision scope didn't work out too well. It does allow me to see in the dark, but unfortunately, the landscape lights across the back fence interfere somewhat, and the birdbath where the owls appear is too close to my window. I can't get a good focus on them, apparently this device is meant for more distant viewing. I think I'm going to keep it, though, because I did find I can peer into the darker corners of the yard with very acceptable clarity, which is a safety thing for me. I just wish it would have worked for watching the little owls. They both came in again this evening. Actually, just using a good pair of binoculars I get a pretty good view of them. They're only about twenty feet from me, but my binocs are good ones and they do amplify the ambient light somewhat, so I can see pretty well, at least until it gets really dark.
That little pair of owls is just about the cutest thing I ever saw. They both bathed, and sipped at the water, then sat all fluffed up for a few minutes, then flew away. With any luck, they'll snag a couple of the mice and woodrats that we see now and then. Nature - I love it! --Romeena

You can bet I'll be addressing that issue immediately! If we don't post it oursel;ves, we surely can't be offended if it's not posted anywhere else.

pappa bear, I know next to nothing about night vision scopes, and probably shouldn't have bought one without doing some self-education. All I know is that I can't take the lens cap off until it's dark. It was a $200 unit, on sale for $99, so I'm sure it's just a cut above a toy. It's monocular, and has "1,6/85" on the lens cylinder. The eyepiece is adjustable for focusing, as well as having a focusing ring on the lens cylinder. It has two buttons, one that powers it up, and another that activates an illuminator. Other than a little strap that my hand slides under for security when I'm holding the unit, that's about it.

Sure wish we'd get some rain. It rained in Dallas, ten minutes east of me - and in Ft. Worth, twenty minutes west of me - but it didn't rain at my house!! Oh, well, maybe tomorrow.

Have a great weekend, everyone. I have to work Saturday night, and Monday and Tuesday nights as well, so won't be doing much else. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

I'm watching a demented little squirrel right now, he has scratched out a place in the grass next to a tree, and is just rolling and twisting and fliping around in that area, like he's having a spell. Then he'll suddenly leap about two feet in the air, come back down and stand there for a minute, then jump into his little hollow and resume his fit. Crazy little critter.

A big, heartfelt "thank you" goes to all our vets. You guys (and gals) are the cats. Without you nad the sacrifices made by you and thousands like you, we wouldn't have our porch and the freedom to use it, or if we did, we might be speaking some other language by now.
