January 29, 2006 - Msg 33318: Chuck,
Yes, inside the courthouse was in a studio, and all the walls were moveable to get various camera angles. On dvd you can pause and see that the scene outside the front door is actually a painting of the buildings "across the street"!
The outside shots were on a CBS back lot, which now unfortunately is gone.
MDC

January 29, 2006 - Msg 33319: Afternoon, everybody! MDC, about those movable walls - they didn't always put them back in the same place. One thing I've noticed, not only in TAGS but in a lot of shows - the side walls seem to open out just a bit, making the opening at the front (where the camera presumably is) wider than the wall in the back of the room. I'm sure it helps in getting everything in a scene that's supposed to be there. Anyway, the door from the dining room into the kitchen at the Taylor's was sometimes on a straight-line wall, facing the dining table directly, and sometimes it was sort of at an angle, facing as much toward the living room as toward the dining room. Anybody else notice that?

Hazel, if I'm willing to put MY old mug in the album, there's no excuse for you holding out. We're all family here, and families all think each other is beautiful. (Something about the grammar there sounds strange, but the thought is solid.) So, get those pictures coming in, folks!

I just met a lovely couple who are thinking about having my landscaper friend do their yard. He got my permission and then sent them by to see what he's done here. They loved it, and I think they're going to go ahead with the plans. I hope so. They'll be glad they did.

Well, guess I'd better go rustle up some grub. Anybody want to join me for tomato soup and a toasted cheese sandwich? Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

January 30, 2006 - Msg 33327: Spot, we may not be taking about the same sandwich. Just cheddar cheese sliced on a piece of bread (any kind for me), and stuck under the broiler or in a toaster oven until the cheese is bubbly. To us, a "grilled" sandwich is a two-slice sandwich that's plopped on top of some melted butter on a griddle or in a frying pan, toast that side then flip it over into some more butter to toast the other side. However, since we Texans qualify as southerners too, we also sometimes call a toaster-oven or broiler variety a "grilled cheese sandwich". I used the term "toasted" so everyone else would know what I'm talking about. If we mean the one you toast in butter on a griddle, we often call it "a grilled-cheese-sandwich,-the-kind-you-cook-on-a-griddle." Does that make any sense? Every kid in Texas knows the difference.

Toasted, grilled, whatever you call them, they're good! Especially with tomato soup. --Romeena

January 30, 2006 - Msg 33328: I think I'll re-open an old discussion, for the benefit of some of the newcomers. What do you folks call carbonated beverages in your part of the world? In Texas, of course, all carbonated drinks are "cokes" regardless of flavor, except for Dr. Pepper, which is a cult of its own in some parts. There is a Dr. Pepper bottling plant in Dublin, Texas, a small town south of Ft. Worth. There, the DPs are made with Imperial pure cane sugar (a Texas product), not "high-fructose corn syrup", and this is proudly displayed on the label. Trust me, there's a difference. They also bottle it in the little eight-ounce bottles, as well as cans. The "Dublin DPs" have a devoted following here in Central Texas, and people will drive long distances to find them.

However, the little family-owned farmer's market that I patronize here in town has a secret. One of their family members goes through Dublin frequently, and brings back a load of the DPs, which they then resell at their market. Trust me, it hasn't hurt their business one bit. They don't advertise it, but people know, and you'd think there was a drug deal going down. You slip over in the corner, where the DPs are stacked behind a cooler, look toward whichever sister is at the register, she gives you a nod, and sends one of her sons over to get the heavy case of DPs and carry it out to your car. He knows your car, of course. Remember, I said this is a family-owned business. They make it their policy to know everyone who comes in by name, car, preferences and health status. Very Mayberry-esque. I love it. Incidentally, they sell great produce!

Well, I'm rambling on. Better let somebody else have the floor. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

January 30, 2006 - Msg 33329: I call everything a coke - but some opt for "pop" - we know who the out-of-towners are when they ask for a "soda."

I have heard about those Dublin DP's and a friend of mine was going to have some shipped to Indiana until she found out the price of postage.

And Romeena - my momma fixed us toasted cheese sandwiches with our tomato soup. . .in the broiler no doubt. Didn't really know what a grilled cheese sandwich was until I got older (in my teens). We also used to buy corned beef hash, spread it on bread and add a piece of cheese to the top and stick it in the broiler oven - that's good too!

Maybe more babies tonite -

January 30, 2006 - Msg 33330: My mom used to make what she called "open-face sandwiches". I know now that the term can apply to any sandwich made without the top slice of bread, but when I was a child, it meant white bread, stacked with a slice of cheese, sliced tomato, and bacon and put under the broiler. She partially fried the bacon first. When I got a little older, some sliced onion was included. Mmmmm! Good! I make them now and then for myself, but they're not as good as the ones my mom made for me. I guess nothing ever is. --Romeena

Spot, now we gotta see that pontoon boat!
Anyone here ever see the Blue Collar Comedy Tour? A good friend of my says I should see it.
As for carb beverage, we always called it a POP growing up, but if we got it at a drug store fountain, we would say "soda" or even a "tonic"
like "tonic and cherry syrup" would get ya a REAL cherry Coke!
Homemaker, how are the babies doing? Any more yet?
Chuck, Dont get bummed out! In the tags book that I have, you can see photos with cameras and sun reflectors, script assistants, etc. Reality is what we make it! To me, Mayberry is real because I believe in the place, and long for such a place, thus I "bring" it into my present reality everyday. In fact, be happy ya dont have to get a bike license renewed every year! ha Does all that make sense?

ROMEENA: Here in my corner of the world, most people call it "soda," though "Coke" is also popular as a generic (a la "Kleenex" for "tissue"). Calling it "pop" is a sure sign of a transplant. Also, a lot of restaurants around here serve their grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato on them.

I mentioned a while back that my kids had gotten me a lovely labrador puppy. I've been doing my best at puppy training and obedience. She's doing great with house training for her age of 10 weeks. She has lots of toys to chew on that I switch out to keep her from getting bored. I know chewing is part of her development, HOWEVER, she bites! I can give her a Nylabone (or another object) and she often goes for my hand- not the item. She's a growing ball of energy no doubt, but if anyone has any advice on puppy rearing I'd appreciate it. Do you know of any puppy forums to visit?

Thanks,

On the "pop" quiz...we called it "pop". Doesn't matter what it is...it's a pop. The only exception was an "RC cola and a moon pie" request...there's just no substi*tution for that.

On the sammich pickle (actually, don't like pickels). We called anything that was warmed up in a sandwich variety "grilled" or "fried". Fried bologna or fried ham sammiches are my favorite. Big slice of onion and tomato..lettuce...and Hellmans...there I said it.

Mayo or Miracle Whip, the MW wins hands down, though I'll eat both. Plain mayo has no taste, it's just bland. LOVE pickles. BTW, I think someone threw that one in as a jeopardy question earlier, and I don't recall seeing an answer. Where's Ro's sight? I will email a pic for the porch if someone tells me how.
Lisa and I have been married 23 years (24 this June). We have 5 (count 'em 1,2,3,4,5) children. Our oldest and only boy who is age 20 married last August to Kelly (our claim to fame...Glen Campbell is her great uncle). Our 4 daughters are 12, 13, 15 and 17.
I own a small janitorial business with a few people working. I also Pastor a small Pentecostal Church.
...and I love playing golf!
Barney: "You scored 100 and he only scored 80? Well you otta be teaching him"!

Chuck

January 31, 2006 - Msg 33371: Golf? Did I hear someone say golf? I knew you was a man of integrity Chuck. Nothing I like better than a round on the links. And I have found that Hazel's and homemaker's meatballs carry further than any Top Flite. A little hard to putt though.

Jenny, I agree with what all have said here. Our little Barney had to take a few pops on the nose to learn you don't act that way. He's only two and he still gets carried away sometimes when playing. Now if he gnaws on me to hard all I have to do is OUCH loud like and he stops right away and comes up to lick my face as to say he is sorry. He sure is cute.

Mavis, thanks for fitting me in your schedule. Your a doll.

This ain't really a sammich thing but how many of you like to watch Matlock? And is it just me, but do you get to craving a hot dog when you see Ben eating one? Man he makes them things look good. What do you like on your hot dogs? Mustard and onions work fine for me. No ketchup though. Dang, here it's only 6 in the morning and now I want a hot dog. And I don't dare have one at lunch cause Mavis is gonna be trimming my ears later and I don't wanna go in there with onion breath.

January 31, 2006 - Msg 33374: Asa - have you seen the commercial of the man using my meatballs as golf balls, as he hits the ball the sauce flips in his face and on his clothes. . .Classic!?

Two more babies last nite! Both little (or big) bucklings - they were up walking around within 10-15 minutes of being born. Really healthy and really strong - we are pleased. . . that makes 11 so far, miles to go before we are done.

We are Miracle Whip people here - no mayo unless a recipe "pacifically" calls for it.
Love fried balonie - nothing better than that and baked beans.

Chuck - be careful going golfing with Asa - he has mighty slice. . .some of us have scars. . .

January 31, 2006 - Msg 33375: Here on the windy prairie where I live we always called it "pop." My college roommate made fun of me. She called it "soda." My Dad, he was from the old school, he called it sody. Buckeye, I declare, I'm a might worried about you. Are you on the run or somethin? You've got more aliases than Maude Clarise Tyler! Definitely Miracle Whip, homemaker. I've got to take another look at the picture album. Maybe one of these days I'll get a photo to Ro. My son has his driver's permit and we were driving yesterday. He asked if he'd get a ticket if he were going 56 mph. I said probably not up to 5 miles over the speed limit--then we got into a little recitation of "give 'em 40, they'll take 45!"

January 31, 2006 - Msg 33376: For some reason I can't get to the photoalbum page today, Ro. It goes to myphotoalbum.com and tells me the page doesn't exist. Is there a different address?
Charlotte Tucker

January 31, 2006 - Msg 33377: Good morning, all. Charlotte Tucker, I don't know what the problem could be. I just went to the site without any trouble. "Myphotoalbum.com" will take you to the general site. "Romeena.myphotoalbum.com" takes you to my site-within-the-site, where our pictures are. I'd suggest trying again, maybe you had a dot out of place or something. You know how snippy those web addresses can be!

Spot, those are kind words and I appreciate them, but the truth is, this site is made up of all of us, holding onto each other and trying to live a Mayberry kind of life. Love is what holds it together and makes it work.

Well, I'm beat to the socks. Long shift last night, and another one coming up tonight. I'm heading for a bite to eat, and my bed, with the Plum alongside. She goes to surgery tomorrow to get those dratted lumps removed from her little hip. Poor little girl.

MAYBERRY DEPUTY

January 31, 2006 - Msg 33396: Wow, Mavis, you're ept! That link is really neat. I don't know how to do that, wish I did.

I think there is a little misunderstanding about how to get pictures on our Porchsters' site on myphotoalbum.com. Anyone can go to that address and create their own albums, but that does require joining. No one else can "join" my little part of the site, but anyone can go to it, at "romeena.myphotoalbum.com", or through the link Mavis so kindly created. (I gotta learn how to do that!) When you get to the site, you can visit and view the albums, but only I can edit them. So, if you want your picture on there, you have to email it to me, at Romeena@airmail.net. I'll post it on the site.

Mavis, when you send MDC the directions for making a link, would you send me a copy of the email? Even we old dogs like to learn a new trick now and then.

Poor little Plum, she's going to be a prune by morning. She can't have any food or water for six hours before I take her to the vet in the morning, but I have to leave for work at 6:30 and won't be home until time to take her there, so she's going to be without water for fourteen hours. Poor little girl! There's just no way around it.

Well, guess I'd better hit the shower and get into my white suit. I need to retire so badly.

Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

January 31, 2006 - Msg 33397: If you don't have digital pictures, or for any reason can't email them, just email me and I'll send you my snail mail address. You can mail me the pictures and I'll scan them into my computer, then post them in the album. --Romeena
