February 07, 2006 - Msg 33684: Good morning everyone - I am just a little harried over a parent who says that I am not working with their child (I am there 3 days a week instead of 2 days a week, yes, I volunteerily add a day to help her) and that her grades are not good enough (she makes 85% or better in most classes). So now I have to go back through all of my consultation and travel logs to prove to my director that I have been seeing this student and what we worked on. Geesh - and this parent is never home to work with their child, it all rests on my shoulders.
And it is only Tuesday!
Another three babies - so far so good - they keep me busy!

February 07, 2006 - Msg 33692: Good (almost) afternoon everyone! A little chilly on the Porch today. Hey to Spot, Goober, HM, Romeena, MDC and anybody else napping on the Porch.

Mind if I make a comment? Mrs. Me-They has been working nights (three twelves a week) at a hospital for about seven years. She did it so our daughter--now kids--wouldn't have to do the daycare thing. With one in Kindergarten, one at home and one on the way, you can imagine that the amount of time she gets to sleep is not enviable. Still, she manages to give our kids quality "mom time," volunteers for every party and special event at school, and makes it to every teacher conference. I do my best to make them as well, though I can't always get off work. Now, I'm not trying to toot my own horn--though I have absolutely no problem tooting my wife's; she's wonderful--but when you have kids you are taking on a responsibility that cannot be given away to teachers or anybody else. In my opinion, when you have kids, whatever or whoever was number one had been move to at least number two. We are bombarded with talk today that everyone "deserves to be happy" and so we can feel good about making decisions that benefit us first and foremost. Well, if there was a lot more of putting one's own personal "happiness" behind the well-being of kids (and that includes discipline, by the way), how much better of a society would we have? Reading the posts here make me feel like I'm not crazy for feeling this way. All of you with kids sound like such wonderful, loving parents. Well, that's my piece.

February 07, 2006 - Msg 33693: HM: I forgot to add that at least you only have the parents for the rest of the school year. But, on second thought, I guess chances are there will be another to take their place next year. Anyway, I agree with Goober...good for you!

Wanna hear my Cary Grant? "Judy, Judy, Judy"

February 07, 2006 - Msg 33705: Howdy, all. Just getting ready to go back to work, sure did seem like a short afternoon's sleep. Me-They, your wife has a heavy load, working three twelves a week. I did it for a while, and when they said we could do two twelves and call it half-time and still keep our benefits, I jumped on it. Still it feels like a lot sometimes. 'Course, being older than dirt and full of aches and pains might color my opinion a bit. What department does she work in?

homemaker, I'm sorry that idiot parent is giving you a hard time. She should be ashamed of herself. I think I met her sister last night. Sorry excuse for a mother was able to get up and walk outside the hospital for a cigarette, but wanted the nursing staff to come change her baby's diaper, said she was "too tired." And we have to send that innocent little baby home with her! {{{me}}} Makes me shudder!!

Well, off I go. Get through tonight, and I'm off until next Monday night. Ha! The Plum will be happy. She hates for me to go to work, mopes around like a dishrag when she sees me putting on my uniform.

Spot, your getting up to go to work about the time I'm hittin' the hay. IHOP still sounds good, though.

February 08, 2006 - Msg 33723: Good morning Porch! If I had known so many feet and tails were under my rocker, I'd have rocked a little easier.

ROMEENA: My wife works in OR/Recovery. She used to work on a med-surg floor, but figured the less hectic (and fewer patients, especially at night) in OR/Rec would be a better balance to the energy bouncing off the walls at home. She's worked that department for about four years. She often jokes that she brings down the median age in her deptartment quite a bit. (At least at her hospital, most of the nurses in OR/Rec are older.) She misses getting to know some of patients, but whenever she gets one like the one you had the other day, she's glad they are "in and out" to another floor quick. She does indeed have a heavy load, and the plan is for her to cut back in another year or two. We certainly don't live large by any measure, but it's tough making it today. She is very, very appreciated!

Well, more later after the auditors leave! Have a great one.

February 08, 2006 - Msg 33727: BUCKEYE: History degree, huh? Mine too. Not much interest in the military stuff. My concentration was on Early Am social. I love discovering the "mundane" bits of everyday history. I work for a heritage nonprofit that has a few small museums and library. I don't get to "do history" much, though; I do development and business management.

February 08, 2006 - Msg 33728: ROMEENA: I forgot to mention that reading your story about the mother you met last night reminded me of something that happened to me a number of years ago. I was waiting tables in what I guess you would consider a fine-dining restaurant. A group of four obviously well-off mothers came in, most with small children ages about 3 to 6, four kids in all. Once they were seated at their table, one of the mothers brought the kids into the bar/lounge and told--not asked--the bartender to keep an eye on the kids so the mothers could have "girl time." Can you believe that? Dropped the kids in the bar! Well, the manager told them they could seat the kids at their table or they would have to leave. And they actually got angry and threatened to call the owner and complain! Some people.

February 08, 2006 - Msg 33729:
homemaker-What do I think about burgers for breakfast? To paraphrase one of my favorite movies, "Is this heaven?" "No, It's White Castle."

ole buckeye-History. That's great. I have a degree in Political Science and Criminal Justice. I was a volunteer for a couple of Presidential campaigns Ronald Reagan's and Jack Kemp's. I have also do some local canvassing (those annoying people who knock on your door and remind you to vote). If you like military history you should read "1776" by David McCullough I'd give it two thumbs up. Got that one for Christmas.

M-T-Back in the mid-'80's I almost got a job at the Buffalo Museum of Science but I really didn't want to relocate to the Buffalo area and they weren't sure if they wanted to count on someone driving up from the "snow belt" (local term). Well, I guess they were sure they didn't want to rely on someone driving up from the snow belt, they didn't give me the job. That falls under the category of "would'a could'a should'a." Early American history is my favorite era also not so much the social issues I guess, I'm more of a Founding Fathers type. Although, the slavery issue is fascinating.

Boy oh boy-History talk and baseball starts up next week. It warms the heart.

Goober-You're too nice.

February 08, 2006 - Msg 33730: 'Morning, everyone! Chuck, and M-T, I work on the postpartum unit (new moms). I've been there ten years, ever since my husband passed away. I really just didn't want to deal with any more death and dying, so I transferred to the baby floor. For the first twelve years of my career at our hospital, I worked on a very busy med/surg floor, and saw just about everything that occurs in the human condition. For five years after that, I worked all over the house - "floated" wherever I was needed. ICU, CCU, Oncology, Med/surg, whatever. You name it, I've probably seen it, done it, or assisted with it. It was fun while it lasted, but it's over. I'll stay where I am until I retire.

AU-h20 , I just saw your backyard!! wow, who are your landscapers, Currier and Ives?? haha Beautiful! I will have to get 1776, the show on John Adams piqued my interest again of that era when real statemen flourished. I dont want to start no moulage, so I'll just say this and kablooy the soapbox, but i was real dissappointed that some chose to make a political rally out of Coretta Kings funeral. If it came from the other side, i would be just as upset. It was just not the time or place for what some said. Ok , kablooy.
Buckeye, careful at the pipe show, gotta watch those old habits, ha. Remember the BurmaShave signs on the highways? Also, that's ES-CAR-GO! ha

February 08, 2006 - Msg 33735: Hey all - guess what I saw today?? SNOW!! We actually had big flaky snow. I'd about forgot what it looked like. My porch hasn't seen but just one small smattering of snow (back in December - about and inch or so) this winter. It didn't stick today but it sure was purty.

I started out in college as a Secondary Ed - History major (almost 19 years ago). I try to read at least one non fiction book a month and its usually political or historical. I have never read 1776, though, so I'll have to check it out.

Me-They: You asked several days back if we were going to find out what we're having. I want to know but husband is leaning more towards getting a surprise. I go in 2 weeks for the ultrasound, so I'll have to use all the powers of persuasion I have (food and the TV remote) to get him to want to find out. We already have a name picked for a boy and a middle name for a girl (which will be the same as the boys middle name), but still deciding in a girl first name.

I am enjoying all the pics everyone's sent to Ro. : ) My nephew took some a couple weeks back of us, so I'll have to see about getting those to send to her as well.

Prayers for all!

February 08, 2006 - Msg 33736: Good to hear from you, AFD. We are going for our ultrasound on the 20th, so if all goes as planned we will find out then. The ultrasounds for our otehr two were very clear so hopefully this one will be as well. I don't think either one of us could handle the suspense. (Plus, we've got to know whether I need to drag out and unpack the girl things or the boy things.) We've decided on a girl's first and middle names and are about 75% decided on a boy's first name. Still need a middle.

Snow? What's that? We also haven't seen much of the stuff since December when we got a couple of inches. Now, I'm not one to crave a lot of snow, and I could do without all that shoveling, but a little of the white stuff every now again is kinda nice. MDC: I sure wish I could box up all the rain we've gotten this winter and send some to you. It's rained so much and the temperature has been so mild here that until the last week the ground hasn't really been frozen. So it's been pretty muddy. Also, we have flowers budding (that usually don't bud until late March) and I hope the recent cold snap (actually, seasonal weather) doesn't fry 'em.

Oh, I've been a motormouth today. I'll hesh up, sit back, relax and enjoy listening for awhile.

This being normal for children, I pledge that if this occurs with my child, I will not support the criticism, that I will correct my child, support the school personnel, and call in for full details at any time I have a question concerning an incident."

February 08, 2006 - Msg 33741: Good evening, all. The Plum and I did indeed get a little rest, and are much the better for it. How can I best describe my feelings right now, considering I don't have to get dressed and go to work. Let's see...how's this? YIPPEEEEE! Does that about do it?

I'm sitting here at my big old window, looking out into the back yard, and it's just so nice out there. The late afternoon light was beautiful, and now the sun has just gone down, the colored lights on the back fence just switched on, yet it's still light enough to see every detail of flower, stone and fountain. The fountain lights will kick on soon. Leaving this window on my work evenings is very difficult. This is where I commune with friends via email, phone and this TAGS site, and where I commune with nature and God as I enjoy the beauty He has provided. I'm so blessed.

MDC, I agree. Coretta Scott King was a fine lady, a class act. I didn't get to see the telecasts on that day, so don't know the specifics to which you refer, but if someone turned that tribute to her into a political platform, then shame on them. They can think and believe what they will, but they should not superimpose such things over a ceremony that should have been a simple expression of honor to a great and courageous lady.

Well, it's oven-broiled chicken legs with lemon pepper, and rice and asparagus for me tonight. I'm making plenty, come on by if you're hungry!

Buckeye, glad ya got the Escargot! ha.. happy reading, and eating. Remeber, that one sheet is ten years old or so, lot has happened since then.
RO- I sneaked in to your place for dinner, thanks!
Interesting how we can now all picture you at that window! BTW, if ya find a model train phot around, let me know. The close up was not in with the others that I got back from you today. Thanks.
Me they- we'll take rain any way we can, box barrel or clouds! Prefer the clouds tho, haha
Keep up the prayers, I'm doin' my part!
God bless Boo, Mrs Wiley, Mary Wiggens and all you fine folk!

Howdy Folks,

Romeena-I love sitting at our table also and just looking at all the beauty that nature brings. Even with all the snow, we see turkey, deer, cardinals and blue jays just about everyday. But, after reading your post above.... I want your window. I wonder if there is any trouble regarding coveting your neighbors window? Maybe one of the preachers can tackle that. I think I said this before but you draw a beautiful picture. I bet you make a wonderful nurse, very calming I bet.

One more mention of the King funeral, I loved the way President Bush was the first to his feet after every speaker. Furthermore, I loved the way he shook the hand of those who took advantage of network coverage to spout their drivel and attack him instead of paying respect to Coretta Scott King. Everyone has a right to their opinions but how small must someone be campaign during a funeral.

MDC-I loved the Currier and Ives reference.

God Bless,

February 08, 2006 - Msg 33747: Hey to the PORCH! Made it to Denver ok...nice weather out here..60f at least!

Hey to 33742...I actually have a certified and authenticated black and white pic of ernest T, autographed by Howard Morris, AND an actual brick autographed as well.

MDC...saw the transcripts on the funeral, deplorable...no excuse for the way folks acted. It's shameful...and indicative of where we've sunk as a society.

Off to dinner...Ya'll be good...

February 08, 2006 - Msg 33748:
Hello to everyone on the PORCH!

SPOT...Have a great trip to the CHOO-CHOO City. Be safe and enjoy!

auh20...I so much agree with you on your comment about President Bush during Mrs. King's service.

Ro...You said that you are blessed and I'm sure that you are, but I also agree with auh20...that hospital is also so blessed to have you as a nurse. Your love for the Lord shines through in your post.

Everyone have a great night and see you all back on this good ole porch!

February 08, 2006 - Msg 33749: Rev, and auh2o, you're both very kind, and I appreciate your words. I can only hope that I deserve some small portion of what you said. I'm sure that some of my patients would disagree, as I can also be Nurse Ratchett when the situation merits it. When someone can and should be up and moving, I don't baby them, I make them do for themselves. With some cultures, that's a whole new concept for them and they really don't like it! Still, I stick to what's best for the patient, popular or not.

Elmer and Ruth, you can see the pictures of some of the porchsters at: romeena.myphotoalbum.com - click on the "Porchsters" album. You can browse the other albums as well if you wish, but they're my own, my family and such, and probably not of much interest.

Does anyone besides me read the newspaper comics? I've always loved them, and for years have enjoyed reading "Shoe", the one where all the characters are birds. Shoe himself is a newspaperman. Well, have you ever noticed the glaring resemblance between the old senator bird and Ted Kennedy? It's hilarious! Just too funny, I love it!

MDC, did you not receive four pictures back? That's what I received, and am sure I put all four in the envelope. I don't see one around here, but considering the condition of my desk, I wouldn't bet the ranch on it. The only pictures I received were the four I put in the album, and am sure I sent them all four back. Have I missed something?

Well, even though I'm off tonight, I have to be at the hospital in the morning for some infernal meeting, where we will be given information that could have been printed and handed to us, but hey - they'll pay me for my time, and the manager is offended if we don't show up, so guess I'll go. You know, I got into nursing to deliver patient care, not to attend meetings, but such is life.

I enjoy that show. I've got the first three seasons on DVD, and season four is coming out in March.
Not quite the cop as Andy was, mind you, but still a good show.
Spot, enjoy your trip to Chattanooga.
Romeena, you can be a Nurse Ratchett?? That's scary. I'll have to start reading shoe. I read Frank and Ernest, and Off The Mark and that's pretty much it, so I can add Shoe to my comics line up.
I didn't see much of Mrs. Kings funeral, but sounded like what they did at Rosa Parks funeral.

"What does your Sheriff have in his trunk? A rake and a shovel"!

Goober to Andy: "Aint you got a jack"?

February 09, 2006 - Msg 33755: Morning porch. Hope it's a good day.
Hello Elmer and Ruth in Ohio. Pull up a rocker and join us. There's plenty of room.

Chuck, boy do I have a handicap! HA! (I'm a 12) been golfing for almost 30 years now and love it as much as I did when I first started. Great game.

Todays lunch is a chicken with its head cut off. (don't worry Mavis, ain't talking about you:))

Concerning the debacle at the funeral all I can say is how pathetic can people get. I guess if you can get your mug on tv by being obtuse, you go for it. For shame, for shame!

I hear they are changing the marquee at the theater this afternoon. Anyone care to go down and watch em with me?

Safe travels spot. Here's a penny for you.

February 09, 2006 - Msg 33756: Good morning everyone. CHUCK: We just love "Columbo." I've seen every one almost as many times as I've seen TAGS. I'm into detective shows that are entertaining but not gross. I also really enjoy "Monk," "Poirot" (David Suchet), and "The Rockford Files." I try to catch them whenever they are on. Also a new one PBS airs on Mystery from time to time called "Foyle's War." He's a British policeman during WWII. It's really well-done.

Take care.

February 09, 2006 - Msg 33757: Let's have movie nite - we haven't done that in awhile. I hear they brought a new Glenn Ford picture into town for tonites showing.

Then maybe we can meet at the diner and get the special or just have a chocolate malt.

Oh and Asa - as a special ed. teacher - I would concur that you do indeed have a "handicap" -

February 09, 2006 - Msg 33758: Chuck, I love watching Columbo! I've said it before and I'll say it again, but I love the way he makes everyone think he is some bumbling detective, when really his mind is working like a steel trap.

Homemaker, that chocolate malt sounds good. I'm there!
I don't think I will get one in town here, though. I passed by the A&W and on the sign it said, "Newly remolded inside."
I was wondering why the cheeseburgers were all made with bleu cheese.

February 09, 2006 - Msg 33759: Movie night huh? "The Wizard of Oz" is playing over at the Grand. Don't know about that, but I'm in for the malt!

February 09, 2006 - Msg 33763: Morning Porch! I am getting ready to head to DC this weekend to work & hopefully see Jake while I am there. I sure wish my mother's house would sell so I could quit working so hard to pay all my bills & hers. I have mixed feelings about selling it, once it's gone, I can't go "home" anymore, but I am just about to go under trying to pay all these bills. Besides, I want to get this estate settled so I can get my life back. The 7th was 18 months since she passed away, can you believe it has been that long??
Don't remember who asked, but my name on the Bonanza board is GroomerAng. Better go get my things packed, if you don't hear from me for the weekend, don't worry, it only means I couldn't get online up there. MDC did you hear they are adding 50 laps to the "little race" (Food City 250) here this year? They did a commercial with the painter for the speedway about it, can't wait to see it.

February 09, 2006 - Msg 33764: Who's Malloy?

Sterling- was that sign for REAL??? too funny. How goes things with the MIL etc.
Say a prayer for me. We are considering hospice care now for my mom. Tough decision time. thanks.
We have some rain clouds overhead today!! Sure hope they deliver!
Rev- Kasey Kane is a favorite of mine. I hope they all get along better this year. I know a lot of it is to stir up interest, but they ought not be love tapping at those speeds! ha
Mavis, I did not hear that! Sounds like they want it more crowd pleasing.

I noticed in the credits while watching "A Date for Gomer" that Mary Grace Gossage was Mary Grace Canfield! Dont see that too often using same first name, usually that's for the stars of series.

Barney: Al Becker, Al Becker, hmmm, nope can't say as I know him.
Andy: You don't know Al Becker?
Barney: Nope, can't say as I do.
Andy: How about Luke Taft? You know Luke.
Barney: Andy! Really, you know he's on the sauce.

February 09, 2006 - Msg 33781: Hey to the PORCH! Hope ya'll are doing well this fine evening. I'm here in Denver...in meetins all day today...and till about noon tomorrow...then back to Chicager...and I can't wait! :-)

MDC, lots of prayers for you during this time...it's tough to make those decisions...and I can't beleive how much my perspective changed duing the time with my dad. I always said I'd never let him go into hospice or even nursing home care...I was wrong, and I learned a lot about what goes on and how caring most of the folks who give that much needed care are. Sometimes it's hard to see beyond our needs, and see the fault in our thinking. I'll pray that you and yours can find what's best for all involved.

Hope that everyone is safe and secure tonight...and just take comfort in the fact that there's only 32 more days till SPRING!

Ya'll be good...

February 09, 2006 - Msg 33782: Good evening, all. Please keep at least three feet back from me, I've got a miserable, wet, nasty, sneezy, headachy cold and I don't want any of you to get it. Grrrr! I hate feeling like this!

In spite of this cold, I spent some time in the back yard today, and made a wondrous discovery. I have a beautiful iris blooming! There's a picture on the photo website, the last one in the "Yard and Wildlife" album. Feel free to check it out. It's really beautiful. The rhizome that produced it was given to me by my landscaper friend - he dug it out of his own yard and brought it with him one day and planted it. He said it would be pretty, and was he ever right!

Well, I think I'll take my cold and put it to bed. Poor Plum, she'll have to listen to me coughing and snuffling all night. At some point, she'll sigh deeply and pointedly, climb down off the bed and go get in her crate to sleep. I get no sympathy from her, the little brat.

Have a great day tomorrow, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

February 09, 2006 - Msg 33783: Hello again PORCH
First of all, MDC, I will surely have you and your family in my prayers. I pray for strength, peace and assurance as you have to make these decisions.

Mavis...Yep, I've seen that sign...It's a good one. Thanks for reminding me of it.

Ro...Pray that get feeling better.

Been kinda disappointed that TV Land is not showing TAGS as much.

Everyone have a good nights sleep.

February 09, 2006 - Msg 33784: After all you've done for me, MDC, praying for your Mom and your whole situation is the least I can do. I hope God gives you and your family wisdom and strength in this decision.

Oh, and yes, that is a real sign at the A&W restaurant here. I pass it all the time. I suppose maybe I should go in and tell them about it, but then I wouldn't have anything to chuckle at when I go by it. ;)

Hope your cold gets better, Ro. And maybe if you remind the Plum who needs to stay healthy to open up her cans of food, she might be a little more sympathetic. :)

Have a nice night everyone.
-Sterling Holobyte

February 10, 2006 - Msg 33785: Morning porch. We made it' It's Friday!

Hope you get feeling better Romeena. I hate colds. I don't mind getting regular sick, but I hate colds (in my best Lydia voice).

MDC, I know what you are up against having gone through it myself last year. I will tell you this though. We got hospice involved with my Dad in the last week of his life. I was reluctant to do so because I always looked at hospice as throwing in the towel so to speak. I wish now, knowing what I do, that I would have involved them sooner. They were a great help to him, and a huge support to us (the surviving family). They usually will not take on a case until there is an indication of 6 months of life left or less, so I'm not sure what your Mothers health is like. But you have my prayers as you go through what is a most difficult time. Hang in there and lean on Him.

You be careful Mavis. I think I have a penny here for you also as you travel.

Goober, how's the air in Denver? Gosh, you should have come over one more state and seen me.

Hope everyone has a great day.

February 10, 2006 - Msg 33786: Sterling, Did you see my message 33701 above about the electronic version of Writer's Market--check it out. Asa, I found your explanation of your various character changes in the show interesting. I recall some of them. Romeena--I have a big jar of VICKS here with your name on it. Grease up, rest, and drink plenty of fluids. Prayers for your mom and you, MDC.
