June 12, 2006 - Msg 39090: Oh, my. I just got home from my rent house, the one that is now vacant. It's heartbreaking. The inside of the house is okay, no problems there, except for the back door. The outside is going to need some repair, but it's normal age and deterioration. She's not responsible for that.

The yard, however, is something else. There is a sprinkler system. There is no excuse for not watering. She didn't water. The lawn no longer exists. The front isn't too bad, apparently she did water there, at least a little. The back, however, is nothing but hard-packed dirt and ragweed. My mother's prize roses are nearly dead, and there is no grass. The lease specified that the yard be maintained properly and watered regularly. There are huge craters dug everywhere. I learned from a neighbor that she had three big dogs back there, and that's probably why she didn't water, because they'd be all muddy. The beautiful solid wooden back door, with its leaded-glass panels, has been dug and clawed until it's almost worn through in places, if you can imagine. The window screens on the back of the house are shredded. I know the dogs were in the house as well, because the inside of that back door is clawed and dug up also. Now get this - her lease specified absolutely no dogs. She had two cats, with lease permission, but she was to have no dogs. Why do landlords specify no dogs? Because what happened to my house is what always happens. It's going to cost me about $300 to replace the door, and probably $800-$1000 to get the yard back in shape. We'll have to haul in dirt and compost, have a crew pulling weeds, repair the sprinklers where the dogs chewed the heads off, and replant grass. She had a $1400 deposit, and I will be fair, but it looks like she'll get very little of it back, if any. I really hate this. I know she moved because she had lost her job, but that's not my fault. The back yard is not very big, I think what she spent on dog food for three pony-sized dogs would have more than paid for the water to keep it green. Grrrrrr!

OK, sorry, but I had to vent somewhere. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

June 12, 2006 - Msg 39095: Romeena, landlords here in Canada aren't so lucky. The last month's deposit is strictly to pay the last month's rent. It can't be used as a security deposit for repairs or cleanup. Us landlords have to sue in small claims court for that.

June 12, 2006 - Msg 39097: Gosh, Poor Horatio, can't you collect a damage deposit? We do the first and last month rent thing, too, but in addition we have a damage deposit, which we can withhold if we think it's merited. If the renter disputes, it's up to them to pursue getting it back. However, the way my realtor handles things, they don't have much to complain about - he gets before and after pictures. We can prove the default, no problem. I'm sure she knows it, and won't be too surprised. She knew she wasn't supposed to have the dogs, and she knows how much damage they did, unless she's blind. My big concern now is getting it fixed up and leased again. I'm losing $1800/month while it's empty. Believe me, I'm feeling that!

HA! ASA you are so funny. Please read more carefully, you might miss something good, and don't worry, I'm not in the habit of reporting such things. How's the toolbelt?

What exciting things are planned for everyone today? Just the usual for me. My dear old dad is planning to go out of town for a few days to visit his brother in Waco but he was throwing up last night, so I don't know how he is going to feel today. I am telling you, it is the hardest thing to watch him grow older because it seems that he has so much pain and just feels bad almost all the time, poor thing. Now he has some kind of a skin condition that he has been to the dermatologist for several times and they don't seem to be able to do anything so he just itches all the time. He wanted to go out to the beach and swim in the salt water yesterday so I took him and the kids. It seemed to help for a little while. Anyway, its such a hard thing to see your big, strong Daddy getting weaker each day. I'm glad I'm here to help.

Hope ya'll have great summer's day!

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39162: Morning Porch! Got lots to do today, so only got a minute to rock, someone pass the coffee please. Hey Asa I went back after Warren's post & read through some of the archives, just remembering things we have all be through together, now how come we don't have a softball team getting together this year? Are the uniforms mildewed or something? Now some things for ya'll to contemplate & offer some advice for me...I am trying to come up with new things in my business, kind of new marketing ideas. I am wanting to do something for referrals, to show my clients how much I appreciate them. Not many groomers do this, but it makes for good business I think. I am going to offer a $25.00 gift card to the local pet store for the one that refers the most, or should I have a drawing for it? Kinda like whoever refers someone the name goes in a bucket & I pick one out. Which would be best, reward the one that sends the most or draw from all the names? Next, I want to send a "press release" to the newspaper, but thought of some kind of contest for new folks, a local hairdresser is doing 3 free makeovers to first time clients, they have to send in a letter saying why they should get the makeover. I'd love to do something like that, but am having trouble "working out the kinks" Any suggestions?
Now, I have others, but I'll run those by you later. Thanks in advance. And MDC I forgot to tell you congrats on the job. Best go get my face on.

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39165: Morning Warren!

Mavis, how about offering a, "makeover" for dogs...something similar to what the hairdresser is doing. It could be really cute, like do a "before" and "after" picture of a dog/dogs for the newspaper add. I think folks would get a kick out of it. How about a dog beauty pageant? If you have an annual local festival like we do here, you could sponsor a doggie beauty pageant (we have weinie dog races here). It might bring alot of attention to your business and you know how people like to show off their dogs! I can hear it now, "Now, our sponsor Mavis' Dog Grooming (sorry I forgot the name of your business) brings you the first annual Beautiful Poochie Contest!" The winner could get a gift certificate to the pet store or free grooming? As far as those who refer, how about buying a collection of dog toys or decorative collars and when someone makes a referral, send them a thank you card with a gift certificate for Fido for his choice of dog toy or collar at his next grooming? Just a thought. I think folks would appreciate it and it could be done without a lot of expense on your part. Feel free to shoot down my ideas, you won't hurt my feelings (sniff..honk!).

I've missed y'all. Life has been insanely busy. I'd sit down to type and either the phone would ring, hubby need work done, or Bryson was calling me. Hubby made it home late Sunday night safe and sound, thank the Lord. Bryson's at VBS Xtra so I have a few minutes while the washer's going. I'll read the archives in a bit.
Boo- When we were talking about regrets you mentioned one of my greatests, Nathaniel, my 34 wk stillborn son. Yes, I feel completely guilty over his loss. I have a blood disorder and am either on coumadin or lovenox (when pregnant). Everything was going perfectly until around the 30 week. I noticed some decline in his movements. I told the perinatologist and they did weekly ultrasounds just checking if he had a heartbeat and brain activity. They didn't measure him. I called the doctor on Sunday saying that I hadn't felt him hardly at all that day. I was scheduled for an ultrasound on Tuesday so they told me to come in then. Inside I knew that was wrong, but they were the doctors. When I got there they told me he had died. The autopsy showed a blood clot in the placenta, that if they were measuring they would have seen. He was small compared to Bryson, who was 36 wks. So, I have to say I regret it, but I'm consistently being told that I did nothing wrong. It was the doctor's fault (and I agree), but as a mother I should've done something. I don't really dwell on him or my other losses (Taylor should be born on Friday), but I do regret. Thank you all for saying its okay to regret, but then give it to God and move on. I love y'all so much!
Well, house work calls. Its cloudy, a bit rainy, and chilly for June. Millie- Everything sounds yummy!
Blessings to you and yours,

Hey to all! Since no one's offered, I'll do dinner. It'll be shrimp poppers or salmon, couscous, brocoli, salad, and strawberry cheesecake for dessert.
Blessings to you and yours,
~Lucy

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39178: Oh, I forgot to ask. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of gnats. The pest guy said they can't spray for them. I put ice and clorox down my kitchen drain, but they've infested my apartment. Its either those or ants in the summer, especially when there are other empty apartments around us. Thanks!

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39179: Gosh Maude, what a great opportunity to hear REV! Hope you can make it to that service.

So sorry about your husband's uncle, homemaker. Prayers for your family.

Also a prayer for Sterling concerning his house.

I have a prayer request today for all you wonderful prayer warriors. We have some friends that go to our church who are about 50. Well, Linda has had 2 lung transplants and is having alot of trouble now for about a year since the last one. It has been a real ordeal for the family and now she is in ICU. I don't know how bad it is yet. Please pray for Linda and her husband, Keith. Thanks.

Lucy, how heartbreaking. I can't even imagine how that must be for you but I think I might feel like you do in the same situation. Wish there was something I could say to help. I will continue to pray and just listen anytime you want to talk about it. I'm just curious, though, when you called the doctor on Sunday because the baby wasn't moving much, was it your regular doctor or someone on call for him? It does seem unusual that they would not tell you to come in to be evaluated right then. When I worked in the Labor Unit, we always told ladies to come in if they had decreased fetal movement so we could evaluate the heart rate, activity and usually do a sono. I don't know if Ro has always done the same but it was standard practice at my hospital. It sounds like poor judgment on the doctor's part. I can remember a situation 10 years ago that still hurts when I think of it. I had a patient who was pregnant and very near her due date. She had some high blood pressure so we had her in the hospital. Well, the fetal heart rate was doing some "funny" things. Nothing textbook or ominous but I had enough experience to know something wasn't quite right so I reported it to the doc. It was during the night shift and the baby wasn't in fetal distress but I nearly sat on top of that woman all night to make sure nothing happened to that baby. This was on a Friday night and the woman was to be discharged on Saturday morning and scheduled to come in for a c-section Monday morning. I told her doctor that he should not dismiss her but should go ahead and do the c-section Saturday morning because something wasn't right. The next morning when I was giving report to the on-coming shift I told them to hold her breakfast because I was sure that when the doc came in that morning and saw the fetal heart recordings he would do a c-section and that they should discourage him from sending her home, if he suggested it. I felt every confindence that he would keep her. I was off for the next three days and when I came back on Tuesday, I heard that the doc had sent the woman home on Saturday morning and when she came back on Monday for the c-section her baby was dead. I felt like someone literally hit me in the stomach. I couldn't believe it. I was so sick about it and went to by bosses and told them about what had happened, and to the doctor but I don't think anyone ever did anything. They said it was just a judgement call. I felt betrayed by the doctor and the nurses I reported off to and I was horrified for that poor family. Sometimes life is very unfair.

Better go get a shower. We are going to see the architect tonight to iron out the houseplans.

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39180: Hey Barnwannabe , I chose Warren for two reason's. One is I think Warren is highly unappreciated and two is I dont feel it's right to choose Barney or Andy. You just dont walk into the porch and say "Hey im going to be Barney Fife or Andy Taylor". However I am fine with someone being Barnwannabe or someting like that!

Evan if someone was Barney I wouldnt not talk to them!

Out of curiosity dous anyone watch anything besides TAGS?
The Munsters? Gilligans Island? Bonanza? Time Tunnel? Lost In Space? Anything?

Deputy Warren Ferguson

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39181: Afternoon, everybody! Just passin' through on my way to work. Spot, we knew that wasn't you messing with those phone numbers. Not your style. And just why won't your computer at home go to the porch? I'd slap it upside the head if I were you. If it's a security thing with the kids, there are passwords to even log onto a computer, at least mine has that feature. Kids! What won't they think of next?

Warren, I agree about holding the names of Andy and Barney as off limits. It just seems like the respectful thing to do. As for watching other shows, I watch a lot of the stuff TVLand runs. Love the Munsters, ol' Gilligan, the Hillbillies, Addams Family (Gomez and Morticia were hilarious), Lucy, Dick Van Dyke, all the funny old stuff. Not much on A-Team and the like, but to each his/her own. I'd love to see the old "Lost In Space" again. "Danger, Will Robinson! Warning! Warning!" Just too funny!

Well, off I go. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39182: Yes, I like "Gunsmoke" and "Bonanza" too. --Romeena

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39183: That's cool Romeena!

Deputy Warren Ferguson

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39184: I dont get TV Land in Canada , but fortunatly most show's are on D.V.D. or are being relesed.

Deputy Warren Ferguson

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39185: That is okay, Warren. I didn't think about it that way, but now I agree. The reason that I chose Barnwannabe is because NOBODY is as funny, or as good at facial expressions as the real Barney. Oh, and Thanks Millie for giving me that web-site, I really appreciate it. I watch Hillbillies, The Munsters, any of the Law&Order series, and sometimes Golden Girls, but not much, just watch Golden Girls when I'm surfing channels, and nothing is on. I still think that TAGS is the best!!!

Barnwannabe

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39186: I understand Barnwannabe. Sorry if it sounded like I was being mean to you! I agree , TAGS is and allway's be the best T.V. series. Well at least thats my opinion but Im sure their are Tons who agree!

Do you build cars or models Barnwannabe?

Deputy Warren Ferguson

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39187: Hey Warren Gunsmoke & Bonanza are always on my watch list! I love the westerns, most girls don't, but I do. I like Dick Van Dyke & Lucy too, oh & don't forget The Waltons & Little House.
Thanks for all your suggestions, I am going to do a referral thing, but couldn't decide if I should give the big prize to the one that refers the most, or just have a drawing. Being mobile, it's hard to do pics like the Santa ones. I do take picks of all the dogs I groom & put them on my website (which needs updating by the way) but haven't done any like Santa. Thanks for the suggestions.
*Mavis

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39188: Evening, porch! Lucy, prayers for you, bless your heart. Mavis, how about if a client gives you a referal, give them a discount on their next grooming.....just a thought. Warren, I love Gunsmoke...my favorite character is Dirty Sally.
I also like any classic old sitcoms...I wish Nick and TVland would change up more.
I'm making chocolate chess pies tonight....anybody want a piece?
Millie

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39189: I think maybe the reason Spot can't post could be that Floyd was trying to block the interloper....?

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39190: Well Im going to watch an episode of "Wild Wild West". It's pretty new on D.V.D. and Im on Episode 3. Other season's Im currently watching are "The Time Tunnel" volume two and "The Big Valley" season 1. My favorite right now is probally "The Big Valley". Im also watching "The Rat Patrol" season 1 which has been out for awile , but Im only on episode 17 beacause when TAGS season six came out , I was watching that straight through for awile!

I'll try to get back to the Porch again tonight!

Wow, I finally got caught up! ha
HMaker- sorry about your family loss. I will remember him when I put out the flag for FLAG DAY tomorrow. My two nephews have returned for 2nd tours in Iraq, so would appreciate prayers.
Poor Horatio-You are a Master Deciphering Conasseur (sp?) HA!
Warren, I forgot all about Time Tunnel! How about Land of the Giants? If you like westerns, Buckeye and I also post at
www.riflemanconnors.com
It is mostly rifleman info, but posts are on anything western. Buckeye is buckeye there and I am Wyatt Earp, if interested.
Luccy -prayers for you for sure! God bless ya.
BOO-Remember last year when I had the Elvis impersonator show up at my wife's work? It was very well done. She loved it! Maybe I'll send a pix to Romeena for the album.
Just think, that 96 year old you mentioned saw air travel go from crude balloons to rocketships, and land travel from horse buggies to Caddys! Amazing!
OK, quotes from "THe New Doctor" I watched last night.
Andy: Barney, if you keep runnin' that siren, I'm gonna take it off the car!"
Barn: Well, it let's people know that we're open for business!"
ALSO, I didnt know Mayberry had so many doctors, Barn mentions, Doc Carothers, Green, McKensie, and the new one Dr Benson. And there was also Doc Andrews. (Who was the one played by William Christopher of mash?)

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39193: Millie, I remember when Nick At Night used to show really old shows like The Donna Reed Show, The Life Of Riley, Father Knows Best, Burns and Allen, and The Patty Duke Show. Anyone else remember that? Now the show programs that are fairly new, like RoseAnne (yuck) and The Cosby Show.

I like to watch Green Acres sometimes and Leave It To Beaver but that's about it besides TAGS.

Warren, I can remember watching Wild Wild West when it was originally on. I was a little girl but had a giant crush on Robert Conrad (West). He was so handsome! I also had a crush on The Lone Ranger and the guy who pumped gas down at the Texaco station.

Well, went over the changes we wanted on the houseplans so hopefully, we will not have to do it again. I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel now!

June 13, 2006 - Msg 39199: Boo Msg 39193, in addition to those shows you listed, I recall watching such shows as Our Miss Brooks, My Little Margie, Love That Bob, Car 54 Where Are You, You Bet Your Life, The Ann Southern Show, Father Knows Best, and Dobbie Gillis, about fifteen or twenty years ago on a cable channel. I think it was one of those early christian channels.

June 14, 2006 - Msg 39203: Morning porchters

Boo, Linda and Keith are in my prayers for sure. I do pray she will recover.

Buckeye, I agree, laughing is better than crying. Congress is causing me to do a lot of both.

TAGS will always be my favorite, but I enjoy Leave it to Beaver, Dragnet, Adam 12, Bonanza and Twilight Zone. And I love the old Perry Mason shows too.

Barnwannabe, you were talking about Barney's facial features. My Daughter and I were talking about that yesterday. Barney could make me laugh with just his expressions more than anyone else. In the What's your hurry episode where Barney is in church and starts to doze off. Just the look on his face is hysterical as he is fighting off sleep.

Boo, I'll be wearing a tool belt all day today, working out of a bucket truck about 30 feet in the air. Also will be wearing a safety harness with a lanyard they require us to wear. With all that stuff hanging off me it sure is hard to get anything done, but boy I sure look good.:)

June 14, 2006 - Msg 39210: Thanks again Millie, and I agree on that Asa, My cousin and I were discussing that yesterday, she said that a blind person would have never liked Barney, because one of the most funny things about him is the facial expressions. How many of ya'll have your own chapter??? Barnwannabe

June 14, 2006 - Msg 39211: I love the expression on Barn's face when he is pretending to be talking to a girl on the phone to make Thelma Lou jealous and the phone rings! Hilarious!

Thank you for your prayers for Linda and Keith. I don't know Linda really well since alot of times she couldn't come to church but Keith is about the nicest, big ol' Texas boy you could meet. I know how much he needs your prayers. Just one more request if I may: A CPS worker called me today to tell me that she would be checking on the little boy who was being abused by his mom in the parking lot last wee. Please pray that God's will be done in that situation. Thanks!

ASA, you be careful up there! I don't know what a "lanyard" is but I'm sure I would like it. heehee. Will you look like Mr. McBeevee?
