Folks, I'm going to look into an easy way to make posting here something that will require a little bit of security. I don't what to make it too hard to post a message but I might at least add a password or something.

We're having a lot of trouble with people pretending to be someone else. Plus, if this SPAMBOT found us....others will as well in time.

Y'all think on it and let me know what you might want. I might also be able to fix it so that others of you, that I deputize, could remove post using some kind of admin area? I'm just thinking out loud. It'll be a while before I can do it but ya'll talk it over.

Spot, I guess I can do the dishes. I just scrubbed my bathtub so it'll work out just right.

Looks like you got it figured out Warren. I did like that first Floyd too. I wish he could have hung around as a different character. His comment to Barney about his head fitting in a pencil sharpner always makes me laugh. I read somewhere they didn't keep him cause he was just to blame nervous. Couldn't remember his lines. You guys are gonna have to give these folks the "BIG FREEZE" until I can get it worked out. I'm doing my best but these things take time. The only way to "stop" it right now is to close the porch. I'm guessing you don't want that? --Floyd

June 14, 2006 - Msg 39251: Prayers for you, Maude, hope you get to feeling better soon.

Wow, I guess I was lucky, I didn't get onto the porch until the bad messages were removed. Must have been bad to upset Branwannabe and Warren so. Anything Floyd wants to do to prevent the problem is ok with me (many thanks, Floyd).

Glad to see you are safe and sound and on the ground, ASA. That head in pencil sharpener line is one of favorites. I just love it!

OK, I need some help from some of you experiened moms. I know that it is normal for kids to play "doctor" but something happened today that I don't quite know what to do about (if anything). My 4 year old has a little girlfriend who is about to turn 6 and they played together today. Well, when I was getting Erin (my 4yr old) ready for bed, she told me that she and her friend were playing doctor and her friend touched her (pointing to her privates) and she said she poked her hard and it hurt. I remained very calm because I didn't want to alarm Erin and I explained to her that she didn't have to let anyone touch her there and hurt her. I didn't want her to think that she had done anything wrong so I kept the conversation light (I am pleased that she told me because it must have been bothering her), but it did bother me. I am concerned that her little friend might have been hurt that way by someone and that is why she was doing that to Erin. I don't know if I should talk to the little girl's mom or not. She is the type that would probably just ingnore it but I love the little girl and hate to think someone might have (or be) hurting her. Am I overreacting? I need an opinion here, please....(Romeena, are you there??)

June 14, 2006 - Msg 39254: Golly, Boo. A tough one. Too bad the mom isn't one who would take it seriously but handle it tactfully. I think you handled the matter with Erin very nicely, and I also think your concerns for the other little girl are valid. You didn't say what your connection to the other child and her mom might be, but if they're family, I'd pursue it for sure. If just acquaintances, I still think I'd mention it, making sure the other mom doesn't feel that her child is being "accused" or anything, but rather than you're concerned. The mom may surprise you - when you start talking, a light might go on in her head. There may be a "funny uncle" or someone in the picture that will come to mind for her right away. Or it might be another child - who knows? I do think it bears discussion with the little girl's mom. If she refuses to get involved, at least you have tried. Oh, and of course I'm sure you won't be letting Erin play with her without very close, in-the-room supervision.

Floyd, I think we'll all be happy to abide by anything you decide to do. I certainly will.

Well, I'm bushed. Just clemmed. Worked last night, been at the rent house much of the day, haven't been to bed. Guess where I'm headed very shortly!

Hey since alot of you like Bonanza , I HIGHLY reccomend "The Big Valley". I think it is more realistic then Bonanza and more entertaining! You can get season 1 through Amazon.com and other places. It's a western/Soap but lean's more on a Western.
I think the show started in 1965 and ran to 1968 or 1969. I am 12 episode's through season 1 and everyone episode has been great! Un-like Bonanza , Big Valley focoses more on family issues and personal problems. Yes Big Valley dous copy alot of ideas from Bonanza but it's very , very different!

Mil

June 14, 2006 - Msg 39282: Thanks for the advice RO. The child I was telling you about is actually my best friend's daughter and she is like a neice to me so I was concerned about her. Her mom is the friend I talk about here from time to time, who has the teenaged daughter who just had the baby by her alcoholic, in-jail boyfriend. That's what scares me; the little girl was left in the teenaged daughter's care at night while my friend was working at the hospital (she's a nurse). The boyfriend was living there at the time, too, and I tried over and over to get my friend to see the danger of letting these kinds of, "boyfriends" live in her home and to be around her little girl. It has been really tough for me not to just walk away, tell my friend she needs to have her head examined and just cut them out of my life. I can't do that, though. I really love her kids and they are like family. I am, however careful with my kids. I never let them go to her house if one of her daughter's boyfriends was there. It's a tough situation because I feel like when I tell her something I am concerned about, she is in some kind of denial about it. She was an abused child herself and I think that effects her judgement. Bottom line is that she needs help from a professional. There are so many things she has not dealt with and it's like she has an altered sense of reality. I gave up a long time ago on trying to "fix" her life (she needs alot more than I can give her) but I can't give up on her or her kids.

Thanks Lucy, I did give Erin the talk about who should touch her. Hope she will remember. It made me realize how vulnerable a little child her age is. We, as parents really need to be diligent about teaching our children how to protect themselves.

ASA, thanks for asking about Dad. He is doing pretty fair today.

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39350: Morning porch , Im up bright and early , 7 :09 over here. I get up early every morning to watch Bonanza at 7:00. Man I feel like a kid geting up every morning to watch a favorite T.V. show! Looks like a pretty good one today! Floyd I like both options but I think , actually I dont know, both would probally work! Your choice Floyd. I was reading my book "The Andy Griffith Show" the 1985 one, and on chapter 3 it said Howard McNear died in 1967. I was pretty sure he died in 1968 or 1969 , because he stuck around for season 7 and then left. Kind of confused , anyone know the real answer?

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39351: I'm back!!! I didn't mean to get mad yesterday, but it's just that ever since I first started getting on here, ya'll were all nice people, you welcomed me, and i carried on good, wholsome conversations with some of you. I mean Mavis even gave me a recipie!!! You all seemed to be good Christian people who go to Church, and when I saw that I went nuts!!! The reason that I got so mad, is I was showing my elderly Aunt the Porch at the time. She got rather upset, when she saw that, too. I am glad to have people to talk to who share the same passion that I do...TAGS. If this were really a porch, with that on it, it wouldn't need sweeping, it needed to be pressure washed!!! LOL!!! It was kinda funny, my Aunt said that men needed to keep their personal problems to themselves!!! She is old, and she really didn't understand it. That was almost like going to Church on Sunday Morning, and seeing that all over the walls of the Church, you know what I mean??? I hope that I can still talk to ya'll. Let me know if we have to have a password to do this. I asked the other day, and I don't remember if I got an answer, but do any of you have your own chapter??? Barnwannabe

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39352: Barnwannabe , I sort of agree with your aunt , I dont like sharing personal prroblems over the internet , yes I trust you all , but you never know who's snooping in the porch. I mean accessible to anyone! That's why I usually just stick to talking about TAGS , Other T.V. show's and abit about cooking!

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39353: Morning gang...getting ready for work...will holler from the old power company...lunch is on Horatio......SPOT

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39354: Mornin' Porch,
Its already quite warm here, as Spot said it'll be in the 90s. Bryson's enjoying VBS this week. I'm sorta enjoying the break, but my friends are all busy with their little ones being home that I can't find anyone to go to lunch!
Big Maude- Did your kids go to camp? I hope you can see Rev. That would be nice.
Warren- In time, you'll find that you can come to depend on us for more than TAGS. We all share that common bond, but we all have other things to discuss. For instance, when I'm having a bad day I know that I can come to them and they'll help. If someone else is having some sort of problem then we can help them. Its kind of like a cyber-family. You don't need to discuss anything else if you don't want to, but just know we're here. We all do care.
Barnwanabee- I'm sorry your Aunt saw those words. There has been an interloper in here recently. I did not see what it said, but I'm sure it was terrible for those who did. Understand that this is not Mayberry. We all would love it if it was, but unfortunately we don't have Andy policing everyone in the world. I'd have to say most, if not all, are God-fearing Christian people who want what's good in the world.
Poor Horatio- Please don't make chili for lunch!
Tom- I'm so sorry to hear about your troubles. You'd better take care of yourself. Don't let them get to you. You're a wonderful, beautiful child of God. I will say that sometimes families aren't what they're cracked up to be. Mavis can vauge for that statement.
Mavis- How's things going with the case?
MDC- I thought that book club show would be awful from the commercials. There really isn't anything out anymore that's decent.
Romeena- Are ya okay? How's the house cleanin' comin' along?
Mary Wiggins- How's the situation with John?
Well, I have some paperwork to do and I need to clean the ceiling fans. I'm amazed at the dust that's on them. We have air filters in every room, and you'd think that would keep the dust out. Have a wonderful day.
Blessings to you and yours,
~Lucy Matthews

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39355: Good morning, all. Barnwannabe and Warren, you both raise good points. Barnwannabe, I can certainly understand why you got upset. I was fortunate in that the posts had been removed before I got to the porch, but I can imagine. It has happened before, often just stupid kid stuff, but sometimes really offensive stuff. Floyd does a great job of keeping it cleared off, but he can't be here every minute. That's why I agree with him, that a password for posting might be a good idea. Not desirable, perhaps, but a good idea nevertheless. I don't particularly enjoy having to lock my home, my car, ask for an escort to the parking lot if I leave work at an unusual hour and such as that, but that's the kind of world we're living in. You have to do what you have to do. So if Floyd can build us a little protection to keep the trash from blowing onto the porch, then I say let's do it.

As for the discussion of personal problems, that's a tough one. I think a lot of good has been done here at times. I've certainly benefitted from your counsel and encouragement over the years. At the same time, it's true, as Warren said, that we should be careful what we put out here for anyone and everyone to read. I've been a little concerned about having posted my email address here. Lately I've been receiving tons of spam, like 25-30 a day or more, and I wonder if that may be where some of it is coming from. I never used to get more than three or four a week, and now it's a flood. It's so true, we never know who's snooping. They hide under the porch with the spiders, I guess.

Floyd, that brings up a question. The password arrangement, would that be to gain access to the porch for reading, or just to post? If it's just for posting, that's fine, but would mean that spiders could still read what we post and glean information. If it's to gain access to the porch in general, that would eliminate the snoopers, but would keep newcomers from finding us and deciding to join our family. I guess that's probably how we all came to be here, so I'd kinda hate to see that happen, even though it would make us more secure. It's a tough question, isn't it? Have you ever thought about having a "clearing house" where we could go to exchange email addresses without them being posted on the porch? Just a thought...

Well, I've rambled long enough. Gotta get busy, back over to the rent house. Not a lot I can do there, actually - my handyman friend is doing it all, but I go by to see if he needs anything, or has any questions, and to take him a cold drink.

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39356: Oh, sorry, Lucy, I didn't see you there! I agree completely with your words to Warren and Barnwannabe. You're right on the mark! And Tom, she's right in what she said to you, too. You're a fine, sensitive person who somehow got stuck in a family who it seems might be a bit less sensitive. You just have to forgive them, and love them, warts and all. It's what Jesus would do. Don't let them upset you, just hang up the phone and pray for them. Remember, we're your friends and we love you, all the time!

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39357: Hey everyone! Well I'm finally through with one of my classes. It was a 6 wk course. The other two are 13 wks. I'll be looking into teaching positions these next few weeks. I feel a little nervous. I guess I'm scared that I won't get anything but when I start feeling like that i remind myself God is in control and I have no right to worry, He is in control. But oh is it tempting to try and worry and take control ;)

The Devil must be after my Goat with all this self doubt!

Any way Just thought I would check in. Feel free to reprimand me fro being so absent lately... I should Know better! :)

I hope all is well in Mayberry. Has Barney lost his bullet yet or is he borrowing one of Asa's molded ones?

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39358: TOM, I'm glad to see you posting again. I was shocked to hear about the problem you had with your family and that it affected your health so much that you had to go to the hospital. I hope you are feeling better now. Maybe if it happens next time, try walking away rather than letting it increase your blood pressure so high.

Hey SPOT, you assigned lunch to me? Are you trying to get even with me taking advantage of your kind offer last night to treat at Waffle House, and I ordered one of everything on the menu? ;)

Well, because I had such a HUGE late supper last night at Waffle House, for lunch today, I've got something lite:
- grilled cheese sandwiches
- hot dogs
- potato chips with french onion dip
- nacho chips with salsa dip
- Tim Horton coffee
- Kool-Aid

Deputy Warren, remember, unless you reveal unique data in your posts (such as real names, addresses, phone numbers, etc.) you are still anonymous to everyone here, including the interlopers. And you can still discuss personal issues here without including any unique facts that could help identify you. But that's up to you.

Floyd, if you have to institute passwords around here, then so be it. Afterall, even though we are in a "virtual Mayberry" and don't lock our doors here, once the word got out to the outside world just how good and trusting we are, them interlopers start to show up to take advantage of our hospitality. We definitely want The Front Porch to remain a clean and friendly place to bring family and friends, and not shock people like Barnwannabe and his dear Aunt. It's either passwords and email verification or build a moat around us and stock it with dragons and monsters ;)

Barnwannabe, I'm glad you also returned. Please realize that these offending posts are not the norm around here. Sure we may pick our noses, scratch our butts, burp and pass a little gas, but we do that privately. We don't go advertising it like them ornery interlopers.

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39359: Dixie Bell, I would not worry about looking for a teaching job. That, along with nursing and truck driving jobs fill the want ads in all the papers I read both in Canada and the USA. I've even seen ads for teachers to teach the english language in foreign countries like Japan, the Middle-East and Europe. If you use the internet to search, check out CareerBuilder.com and Monster.com. If you're looking for something local, use your school's placement service for graduates. Good luck.

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39361: Romeena, and everyone else. Whenever you post an email address, always add or change something to prevent if from being scanned by spammers.

Here is an example. Pretend your email address is mayberry@frontporch.com. When you post it anywhere on the internet, try one of these variations:
example #1 - mayberryatfrontporch.com
example #2 - mayberry@frontporchdotcom
example #3 - mayberryspam@frontporch.com
example #4 - mayberry @ frontporch.com

If using example #1, you would include a message that the receiver should change AT to @
If using example #2, you would include a message that the receiver should change DOT to .
If using example #3, you would include a message that the receiver should remove the word SPAM
If using example #4, you would include a message that the receiver should remove the spaces on both sides of @

This will prevent those automatic scanning devices from reading your posted email addresses to generate spam.

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39368: Floyd, I agree with most everyone on here that the password deal might be necessary(well, the interlopers probably wouldn't agree, but oh well). So do what you feel is best. We'll adapt.

Boo, yeah, I think if you do have this girl over to play with Erin I think you will need to supervise. Something may have happened with her friend and she is acting out what happened to her. Then again, it could just be simple childlike curiousity. But either way, it's good that you told Erin what is right and what is not. And that she doesn't have to go along with whatever her friend wants to do.

Well friends, it seems your prayers have worked yet again. You'll never guess... we just accepted an offer on the house! Yea!
It was at our lowest price we were willing to go, but that's good enough for me. Of course, they are having it inspected, and I don't know why, but I am kind of worried about that. Probably because before we bought it we also had it inspected and it was a very THOROUGH inspection, and I remember that there were alot of little things that he found that could be updated or fixed. So I guess I am afraid that after the inspection they might change their mind.
We didn't because they were relatively small things(not dangerous) and it was a good deal, so hopefully they will feel the same.
So if all goes well, I will soon be going through the joys of moving. Actually, I am looking forward to it this time. :)

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39393: Howdy, everybody. Just got home, been rattin' around with my comadre. Good lunch at a little sandwich shop, then over to my rent house so she could see the damage in the back yard. Just makes me sick. Still, it can be fixed, I do have a damage deposit that's sufficient to cover it, so things could be worse. I just can't help thinking how it would hurt my parents to see their beautiful, manicured yard in such awful shape. I just don't know what that woman was thinking.

Yep, Spot, I'm a landlady. I have two rent houses - inherited the big one clear from my dad, and the smaller one was inherited jointly with my brother and he didn't want to bother with it, so I bought his half from him and now the headaches are mine alone. (teehee) The big one leases for a cool $1800, so with it empty now, I'm hurtin'! Got to get it fixed up and leased very soon. My handyman friend is busy over there, painting and repairing, and my landscaper friend will hit the yard next week. It will have to be scraped off and sodded, the beds filled with mulch, shrubs pruned and trimmed, and a tree that is seriously stressed for water will have to be taken down if we can't revive it. I could just pound knobs on that woman's head! There was a sprinkler system, for cryin' out loud! It's not like she had to stand there in the heat with a hose in her hand. People just have no respect for other people's property, I suppose.

Poor Horatio, that's good advice about the email addresses. I never thought of that! I'll remember it next time, though, for sure.

My city has gone on water rationing starting today, and I have to re-program my sprinklers to be in compliance. It's not going to bother me much. We can only water between 7pm and 7am, and I like to water after midnight when the water pressure is greatest, so I'll just set them to run at 12:30 and 4:00 on the legal nights, instead of only running once each night. Also, I'll increase the run times by five minutes, so in a week, my yard will be getting about the same amount of water total. I'll run it in two cycles to prevent runoff. I would be a bit more enthusiastic about cooperating with the water rationing, if the city would fix the broken sprinkler heads on the property surrounding city hall, that send huge jets of water out into the street every afternoon, at a time when they're not even supposed to be watering. (grumble, grumble, gripe, gripe.)

Well, off I go to program those sprinklers. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena
