You're more than welcome around here. This is Mayberry, or our little corner of it, and we plan on keeping it Mayberry so we want everybody to have fun and stop worrying so much. That's *my* job and I'll take care of things for y'all.

June 17, 2006 - Msg 39712: Hey, relax Warren. I don't remember you threatening anyone. As far as I am concerned we are still friends.

Lucy, I remember my mom wearing those dresses like Thelma Lou and I used to hide under her skirt at the grocery store (I was shy). I love the look of them but I don't think I have the right kind of figure for it. I always liked the way Thelma Lou looked at the reunion episode when we find out she is married (much to Barney's dismay). I also remember my grandma dressing like Aunt Bee except grandma was tall and thinner and always wore white gloves when she went anywhere. She died when I was 5 but I still remember when she would go to bed at night, she would sleep in her slip. I can still see her sitting at her vanity in her slip and taking down her long, white hair to brush it. I loved to watch her, she was a very graceful lady. She was the kind of lady who spoke few words and carried herself with great dignity. Mom says I never would show much affection to Grandma but the last time she was at our house, I crawled up into her lap and said, "I love you Grandma". I remember it because it was the last time I ever said it. She died shortly after that. Mom told me that Grandma told her it meant so much to her. Sorry folks, I just needed to take that little trip down memory lane.

Looks like things are settling down a bit. That's good. All we need is Andy strumming his guitar, and things would be perfect. Right, Warren? Huh? Huh? Huh? I'm glad you decided to stick around, and I think you'll be glad, too.

My friend and I watched "Monsters Inc." when we got home from eating crab legs. What a sweet movie! I'd seen it before, of course, (at least 20 times, with the grandkids) but my friend hadn't, and I really enjoyed watching it again, without the kids' horseplay going on. It's such an imaginative concept, but of course it would be, being from Pixar.

Yep, Asa, we're getting some thunderstorms and a little rain here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area - fairly mild so far, but looking pretty severe off to the west. We really need the rain. I'll just batten down the hatches, curl up with the Plum (who hates storms) and we'll be fine.

Y'all talking about movies and Pixar creating Monsters Inc. Well you have got to go see Cars. My wife and I had some free tickets and the only other thing playing was DaVinci Dode and I wasn't gonna waste my time on that, so we went and watched Cars. Oh my goodness, I have not laughed so hard at a movie in a good long time. Clean honest and just a delight to see. I highly recommend it to all my porch pals.

Mille. My goodness you keep some late hours girl. I don't know how you do it. I used to be able to stay up late but anymore it just don't work out if I do. And thanks for the pie.

Boo, thanks for the pie from you too. Just to let you know, I'm going to be oiling down my toolbelt this afternoon to keep it soft and shiney. Now that's toolbelt maintenance!:)

Floyd, how old is Adam now? I remember when that young'un was born! Seems like just yesterday. I reckon he's taller than a stork on stilts by now, though.

I'm not gonna make it to church this morning. I was sleeping on my good ear and didn't hear the alarm, and the Plum didn't wake me. She usually does when I don't hear the clock, but today she didn't. It may be just as well. It's Father's Day, and with my husband and dad both gone, and my dad passed on Father's Day, it's not an easy day for me. I think I'll sit here at this window and thank God for the beauty I see out there, and then go have lunch with my son and his family. It's a joy to watch him with his two little boys. He's such a good dad, and I can see his father's traits in everything he does.

Well, guess I'll go feed the Plum. Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there! Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

Deputy Warren Ferguson

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39747: Sorry to hear that Romeena.

Deputy Warren Ferguson

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39748: Thanks, Warren. I miss them both very much, and miss my mom as well, but death is a part of life, and one must accept what comes. A beloved pastor used to say, "It's not all of life to live, and it's not all of death to die." You have to think about that one a bit, but there's a lot of comfort there.

I was in pretty bad shape when I first stumbled onto the porch, and the kind and caring folks here helped to slowly draw me back into the stream of life, and helped me find a new kind of happiness. I never thought I'd be happy again after my husband died ten years ago, but I've learned that one can be. Oh, it's not the same, but it'll do until I get to go and meet him again. It's true that many of the folks who were here then have moved on, but some of these good people were here, and they mean a lot to me. Also, some of the old-timers do drop in from time to time. I wish they'd do it more often.

Well, gotta get presentable and go over to my comadre's house for dinner. Do you all know what a "comadre" is? It's a Spanish term, the feminine form of "compadre", which you have probably heard. In general usage, it means a very close friend, a "runnin' buddy". Also, it's frequently used to designate the parent of your child's spouse, if you are friends. In this case, when I say "comadre", I'm referring to my daughter-in-law's mom, who just happens to be about my closest friend. We went on two mission trips to Mongolia together, and let me tell you, that will either build or break a friendship! She's cool - flexible, easy-going, patient, and an all-around good sport. Everyone should have a comadre like her.

Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39749: Wow, so much has transpired since my last visit.

To Deputy Warren, after reading your Msg 39706, I want to give you a hug to welcome you back. As far as I'm concerned, that took courage on your part. I'm glad you decided to stay.

Hey folks, I just looked at the archives and June 17 was the first time The Front Porch archived a page from just one day of postings! That's why there is an "a" and "b" version. Gosh, we sure talk a lot ;)

To Romeena Msg 39748, Mother's Day and Father's Day have always been sad times for me. Both of mine are deceased and I also miss them very much. And what makes it worse is to realize that I have lived longer without my dad than with him.
So I created a phrase that helps me deal with this. "Although each passing day increases the time that we have been separated, it also decreases the time when we shall all meet again in heaven". I have tried to put this into a poem but I'm having trouble getting it to rhyme.

Happy Fathers Day to the rest of you fathers out there.

from Poor Horatio

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39750: Oh, my goodness, Poor Horatio, that's just beautiful. What a lovely thought! Whether it ever becomes an official "rhyme" or not, it's poetry as far as I'm concerned. Thank you. --Romeena

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39751: Horatio - I had to manually fix those archives. The script isn't designed to do more than one archive in a day. I just happened to be watching closely or we'd have lost everything from the first half of the day.

Romeena - Adam is 9 years old now.

Warren - Great to have you in town! We need our brothers up north. Are you the head mounty up there? :)

As far as the bike goes....that's pure chromeium on there...at least that's what Arnold Winkler told me.

--Floyd

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39752: Floyd Msg 39750, I'm glad you caught that archive script shortcoming. When I first saw the "a" and "b" versions, I had a hunch it required manual intervention. Because of my past programming experience, I realize how hard it is to anticipate every variation that may occur in the future. I'm just glad you were on watch and not someone like Asa (the King of Nap Time). LOL

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39756: Not at all, Warren. Don't you remember Andy, I believe it was, asking about somebody being the head mounty? I am remembering that from the show aren't I? Or am I confused about somebody else saying that and me just giving the quote to The Andy Griffith Show?

--Floyd

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39757: Happy Father's day to you Dads. Floyd, your wife and boy know how to pick a Father's Day gift. Pretty neat!

Asa, I am so glad you told us about Cars. I have been hesitant about seeing it because Over The Hedge almost put me in a permanent coma of boredom. Guess I will take the kids soon. By the way, I'll bet that toolbelt looks great after the oiling. I was thinking, I should have got my husband a toolbelt for Father's Day, given my fondness for all things "handyman-like".

Well, I have my famous lasagna in the oven, broccoli with cheese sauce, garlic bread, sweet tea (or Pepsi) and chocolate pie for dessert. I also have 2 little guests I wasn't expecting for lunch. One of our church families has a little boy who is 5 and he had a seizure today during the worship service. It had never happened before so the parents were understandably upset. Our pastor and his wife went with them to the ER so I have two of their children (routy little boys)! They are very, very cute, though. Be back later....

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39762: Floyd Msg 39754, that is a great idea where you add the message number trigger to the date in the archives. Please consider doing this for The Front Porch whenever you get the chance so we won't risk having an archive overwritten.

And a good afternoon to you Deputy Warren. Since I spend a lot of time in the Toronto area and I know just how proud Canadians are. And they have every right to be. But please Warren, ask first to clear up intentions before making any accusations. Thanks my friend.

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39763: Was "Return To Mayberry" a good movie? I remember the two Munster reunion movie's were good, and "Rescue From Gilligan's Island" was fair but I havent seen "Return To Mayberry".

You know what really dissapoint's me, how TAGS season's on D.VD. have had NO special features! I would love to see interviews with the surviving cast members! Look what Paramount has done for "The Wild Wild West" first season! They loaded that with goodies, but yet nothing for TAGS!

Oh well maybe on Season 8 the final season they will do something cool! I also hope they release Mayberry R.F.D. I have never seen that show but why not release the whole Mayberry legacy right?

What would you guy's like to see for special features? Include the return to mayberry movie? Put on some interviews? Audio Commentary? Include the three episode's of "The New Andy Griffith Show? Include introduction commentary by Andy Griffith or someone giving a breif description of the episode? Include the 11 episode's of "Headmaster" (Griffith's next show that failed, but still be cool to see)?

They are all good ideas! Let me know what you think, or tell me if you have any other suggestions! Again sorry Floyd and Boo for being sensitive!

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39764: Thank you for the apology, Warren. What was "Headmaster"? I never heard of it? June 18, 2006 - Msg 39766: Boo to answer your two question's "Headmaster" was a really bad show Andy Griffith did after the Andy Griffith Show. It only lasted 11 episode's. Some people like it though so I thought Id include it in my "What would you like to see for special features" list.

Question 2. Myswell be honest. Im only in my mid 20's. How do I know about all those old T.V. show's your wondering? My father grew up on all the old classic's and when I was young he had old tape's of show's and re-run's.

Now I have bought all of (well most of) those T.V. show's on D.V.D. for myself. I enjoy them so much!

Some show's like "The Big Valley" and "The Wild Wild West" are new to me because he didnt have all the show's, but I buy almost all the 60's/early 70's classics!

If you have any question's about T.V. show's Im still a great person to turn to though because I do know ALOT about T.V. show's!

Any more opinion's about my post msg 39763? Would love to hear them!

D.V.D. show update! "Rawhide" the complete first season July 25th 2006! "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea" July 25th 2006!

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39779: Howdy, all. Warren, one thing I'd like to see on Season 8 would be the original show, actually an episode of "The Danny Thomas Show", which was the pilot for TAGS. It may have been an unintentional pilot, but that's how it turned out. It was such a hit that they spun TAGS off of it. It was great. I have it on VHS, but it's not very good - rather grainy and lots of breaks where I edited the commercials out.

Millie, you asked earlier if Ann-Margret had a nose job. Actually, as I remember, she took a terrible fall while filming a movie - fell from a swing and landed face first on a stage, shattering a large number of bones in her face. She was out of things for quite a while, but somebody did a wonderful job of reconstructing her face. You can see some differences, but she's still beautiful.

Just got home from dinner at my comadre's house - so good! Roast pork loin, mashed taters and gravy, corn, fresh black-eyed peas, fried okra, peas and homegrown cherry tomatoes. Yum! She's a great cook.

I came home early, intending to plant some tuberous begonia bulbs, but it's so hot out there - 96 - that I think I'll wait until tomorrow morning. It's so hot that my roses aren't shattering and dropping their petals like they usually do when they're spent. Instead, they're literally drying on the stem! I could make a whole bouquet of dried roses, if you can imagine.

Well, I think a glass of tea and a TAGS DVD sounds like a plan. Have a great evening, everyone. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

P.S. Warren, one vacation dream for me and my husband was to fly to eastern Canada and take that train that runs all the way across to the western side. I've heard that it's really a wonderful trip - beautiful scenery. Guess that won't happen now, but it was something we wanted to do.

Romeena Im sure you and your husband would have had a wondefull time! If you had gone I think you would have LOVED Montreal! Montreal is my dream city! So much to do! Quebec is also beutifull!

Ive been to both. I went mainly because Im a diehard Montreal Canadians hockey fan, but when I went, I relized how beutifull a place it was! The people are so freindly! Quebec city is old fashioned and lot's of history, while Montreal is hustle bustle but with a beutifull atmesphere!

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39789: Who is SPOR? (message 39775) heehee...

Warren, you are only in your mid-twenties? Mercy, you are a young one. Do you know anything about High Chapparell? It was a western from the 60's that I know I didn't imagine but nobody seems to remember it. It was kind of like Big Valley, I think. Haven't seen it since I was a very young girl but I remember bits and pieces. Would love someone to tell me what it was about??

Yes Ro, I would love to have a DVD of that Danny Thomas show. I only saw it one time on TVLand and I loved it. Too bad about your roses! It has been very hot here, too. Ro, as far as that trip that you didn't get to take with your husband, I feel in my heart that you will see it together one day. We have alot to look forward to in the LIFE to come...."..he that lives and believes in me shall never die". The gospel is very good news.

Barnwannabee, I would like to ask you the same question I asked Warren. How old are you, if you don't mind telling?

Hey Mayberry Deputy, I wish you would come around and talk longer. You are such a nice person and we just don't hear from you enough.

Boo

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39790: Boo, High Chapparell was alot like Big Valley and Bonanza. It had a family, the Cannon family. It dealed with family issue's just like Big Valley. It ran from 1967-1971 but the origanall cast, or most of the origanal cast lasted from 1967-1970. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061263/ will take you give you all the info you need Boo. June 18, 2006 - Msg 39791: Hey Y'all! Happy Father's Day to you guys!
Thanks for the concern Asa-haven't seen the cardiologist yet,but gonna make an appt. this week. The tachycardia happened again the other day,but seems to be tapering off. I believe (as does my family dr.) that it's all related to me having mitral valve prolaspe, but since I haven't seen a cardioligist since 1988,I believe it's long
overdue! I'll go-promise.
Maybe Floyd needs to give the porch a good rubdown with some VICKS! I'll admit I haven't frequented the porch much lately due to all the problems. But,I'm like Tom and Ro and most of y'all when you say you're not gonna let the interlopers and troublemakers run you off. I'm staying right here with my pals! And Floyd, you do what you've gotta do.I'm behind you 100%. Sorry you're having to deal with all of this junk. Thanks for all you do in keeping Mayberry alive for us.
Anyway, just wanted to check in. Y'all have a good Sunday evening. Love to all!

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39800: Warren, are your talking about message 39794? If so, a few months ago before you came aboard, there was a long-running dialogue about the problems with the public school system and some parents of kids in school were expressing concern about the Day of Silence, etc....is that what you are asking about? Believe me, it isn't a personal shot at anyone. If you are gay, I'm sorry if I offended.

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39801: Who love's cat's here? Im a total Cat person! I dont hate dog's, I think their awsome to, but Ive allway's had a thing with cat's! I have no brother, so when I was young I had a cat, Free, and he was three years older then me and I allway's looked up to him as my big brother. Never had a dog. Free was a healthy cat and lived a long life. I will allway's love him and he will allway's be big brother.

Deputy Warren Ferguson

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39802: Oh, yeah! Peanuts in a Coke! We used to do that in the lunchroom at school - so good. Come to think of it, I've got some real Cokes, and some little snack bags of peanuts - not Lance, they're Planters, but they'll work. Woohoo! A treat while watching TAGS. It doesn't get any better than that. Remember how the salt in the peanuts makes the Coke foam up? And yes, it's a Southern thing. Of course, I'm from South Texas, but we consider ourselves Southerners as well as Texans. Our drawl might not be quite as syrupy as Georgia's, but it's close. We can make four syllables out of a five-letter word!

And Possum! You get yourself to the cardiologist ASAP. I've been having some wild arrhythmias - PVCs, PACs, tachycardia, short runs of V-tach, short runs of atrial fib, you name it, my heart does it. My cardiologist put me on Atenolol (Tenormin) 25 mg daily, and it has smoothed things right out. I'm glad, because all that extra-curricular activity was waking me at night, and about to drive me nuts during the day. In addition, I have cardiomyopathy from chemo that I took in 1979, and some old scarring that's either from an unrecognized MI, or from the radiation that I also received in 1979. Sounds awful, I know, but I'm really remarkably healthy. All that was present during both Mongolia trips, and it didn't keep me from climbing the Great Wall. The arrhythmias would, though, so I'm glad it's under control, and I want to hear that you've gotten yourself to the cardiologist and are also in control.

Well, guess I'll mosey on home. I might drop back by later, if anybody's here. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39808: Hey Warren, I had a cat like that, too. His name was Bo. Had him a long time and when I was the only child at home and my mom would go across the country to help take care of her sick mother, my dad used to leave me at home alone in the evenings because he was having an affair, if you can believe it! I was about 12 or 13 and was afraid to be at home alone at night so I would bring Bo in and he became like my family. It almost killed when he died, so I can relate to you on that one.

Gosh SPOT Msg 39795, sounds like you have a very important job. As for me, I don't know if I could maintain my sanity watching dials and meters for a 12 hour shift. I need variety in my work. I'd be tempted to tweak something here and there just to set off a few alarms and dim some lights, if you know what I mean ;)

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39816: Thanks Warren He is still undecided. June 18, 2006 - Msg 39820: Sorry about the double post!

Deputy Warren Ferguson

June 18, 2006 - Msg 39821: Mavis, please talk to your son and make him realize that if he joins either the Army or the Marine Corps, he has a higher chance of ending up in combat than if he joined the Air Force, Navy or Coast Guard. Does he watch television news, listen to radio news, read newspapers, or search the internet for stories about the possible places he could be sent to? Does he understand the consequences of being severely injured, maimed or even killed? He needs to be reminded of and understand the risks BEFORE signing that contract. If he does understand, then it's his decision if he is old enough. The only way you can stop him is if he's at the age where he needs a parent consent to join.
You state that you prefer he not join the military at this time because you don't want him sent to war. Unfortunately, anyone who joins and serves can be sent into a combat situation at almost anytime.
Although I am both an Army and Navy veteran, my sister won't let me talk to her children about joining the military. She expresses the same concern as you do.
Probably the best advantage of joining the military is the educational benefits he could earn to help pay for schooling once he's discharged. The benefits are the same no matter what branch of service he joins.
Probably my best recommendation is for your son to speak with a Marine Corp veteran of combat in either Iraq or Afghanistan. Contact your local American Legion or VFW post. Do not speak with recruiter!
