I would love to call her with well-wishes from the porch. I leave my thoughts about celebrity events to myself, don't want Floyd to have to sweep again so soon, I sure have a mouthful to say about it. Just tears it in my book, just tears it! Yeah for Kai tell her we are proud of her! Prayers for all you fine friends of mine, I count my blessings everyday & each & every one of you are in that count! Ya'll are the best!

April 27, 2007 - Msg 51753:
Hi everone, just passing thru tonight. Racing in TALLADEGA!
Mom hand improves each day. I have to kinda smile now because her hand is in the famous gesture position as it is set in the splint. She would NEVER had done that in her life, she is such a good Christian woman, but it is kinda interesrting to see it that way!! ha
I watched Quiet Sam last night. here is a reverse trivia question for you. Andy's response was, "Sam Becker got hisself a dirty elephant does he?"
Now, what did Barney say to get that response from Andy?
Well, prayers continue for all, God bless ya, we appreciate it and good night!

April 27, 2007 - Msg 51754: Sorry MDC, I don't know the answer to that one. Glad your mom is healing!

Hey Mavis, what a sweet thing to say. It's true, our porch friends are such a blessing.

Hope Millie is feeling better and will be checking in soon.

Hope you all have a peaceful night,

Boo

April 27, 2007 - Msg 51755: Barney said, "Boy, you wouldn't notice a muddy elephant in the snow, would you?" - or something close to that.

Yep, Mavis, I think Hazel was right, there are just some things we need to leave off the porch, or discuss elsewhere. On the celebrity subject, "I'm not sure I'm old enough to hear what I'd have to say about that." (heehee)

I hope Miller will check in again soon and let us know how Millie is doing. Let's all keep the prayers going for that girl, and for her family.

Honestly! If TVLand runs that sappy awards show one more time, I think I'm going to scream. At least they've quit showing Kelly Ripa slithering onto the screen every five minutes to promote it. Now, if they'd just lose the show....

Sugarplum continues to do well - pestering me for carrots, trying to ambush the mailman, utterly thrilled to see my little grandson this afternoon (somebody to play with, you know) and all in all, is just back to business as usual. It's hard to believe there was, and supposedly still is, anything wrong with her. She says hey! --Romeena

Howdy porch family...nice sweep Spot.

Yep MDC...Talladega should be another good one. I won't get to see it real time. Will have to watch it later So gald your mom's hand is improving. Been praying for her.

Missing you Millie...get back here soon. We are keeping your rocker dusted off for you.

Ro...I agree about the TVLand Awards.

Well I'm heading to bed so you all have a great night and prayers for you all.

April 28, 2007 - Msg 51760: Morning porch family, Prayers for Millie and her family. Hopefully we will hear something soon from her or Miller. A rainy Saturday here in Northeast Tennessee. I Have been doing laundy, mopped the kitchen floor and ran the vacuum (sp?)cleaner, busy busy. My husband is working 9a-9p today so I am holding down the fort. I did take him breakfast though. Been watching Lucy on TV Land as I do my chores, makes them easier to face.
I will cook lunch for us today: BBQ sandwhiches, cole slaw, oven potatoes and cherry or apple turnovers for dessert with vanilla ice cream. Ice tea or kool aid to drink. Enjoy. Prayers for all.

April 28, 2007 - Msg 51763: Big Maude thanks for lunch..what is oven potatoes...just baked taters?...SPOT

April 28, 2007 - Msg 51764: Good afternoon, all. Spot, I don't know what Big Maude means by oven potatoes - I imagine there are dozens of recipes by that name or something similar. I've got a great recipe involving red new potatoes, Ranch dressing, dill and grated cheese - yummy! Another very simple "oven potatoes" recipe is potatoes in little chunks, tossed with olive oil and lemon pepper and baked until tender. Not too shabby.

Big Maude, I do my housework with the TV on, too. It does make it seem to go a little faster. I watched Lucy this morning, the episode where she misses the boat and has to ride a helicopter out to catch it. Classic Lucy.

Got a little pond maintenance done today. Didn't finish, but it's so hot and humid, and I was wearing out fast, so I quit. Tomorrow is another day. For that matter, so is Monday!

I'm very concerned about Millie. I hope she checks in soon, or that Miller does. Bless that boy. Hard to believe he's only nine, he's so mature for his age.

Well, I need a shower after working around that pond.! See you folks later. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

April 28, 2007 - Msg 51765: Good Sat. evening Porch friends, finally looking out at some sunshine here today, I know we need the rain, but I sure do like seeing that sun so much better. Now for the news, Robert & I are getting married on June 30th!! I didn't think there were anymore good men like him left out there & swore I would never get married again, but I'm absolutely head over heels for this man & can't wait to spend the rest of my life with him! Jacob will be giving me away, since he is the only other man that matters to me, I thought it was fitting. Now, Asa when you go gossipin over the fence, the part about *Mavis getting married will be true. haha
Well, off to feed the 4-legged children, they are all looking at me in anticipation, so best hop to.

April 28, 2007 - Msg 51773: The tea is brewing, Spot. Extra sauce on some of that chicken, please. A party is a great idea! We could have it in my back yard, except I don't have a smoker. Is yours hard to transport?

Hey, do y'all want to hear something odd, and neat? I have three huge cottonwoods in my back yard. Beautiful trees, just the right amount of shade, lovely sound when the wind blows, but oh, that cotton! Every spring, it would lie in drifts around the house. I didn't care until I had the landscaping done, then I began to care very much. So, I had a tree guy top them (they were getting so tall as to be dangerous anyway) two years ago, which cut off all the cotton-producing buds for that year. So, no cotton. Last year, he came back and had his guys climb up and literally cut off all the cotton buds. You know, the little strings of green beads that burst like popcorn and scatter cotton. Again, no cotton. This year, same plan but guess what? One of the trees produced no cotton buds. None. The other two did, but not nearly as much as usual. The tree man says it is not unusual, the tree just switches gender and stops producing cotton. It's possible the other two will do the same thing in time. Did you ever hear of such a thing? I'm thrilled, because I'm not about to put up with that smothering layer of cotton all over everything, ruining my flowerbeds. Imagine what it would do to the pond and its filters! Anyway, I didn't know you could spay a tree, but apparently you can. (heehee)

Well, I'm off to find something to add to that supper. How would some stewed okra and tomatoes go with that chicken, Spot? Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

April 29, 2007 - Msg 51785: Good morning, all. It's a beautiful Sabbath morning here today. Sunny, mild and very pleasant. Mama Squirrel just came running down the backyard path, three juveniles in hot pursuit. They're still wanting to nurse, and she's through with them! They chased her all over the yard, up into the trees and back down. She finally got away from them by hopping up onto the tire swing, which they haven't quite figured out yet. They can do it, they just don't know it yet. It won't be long, though. She'll have to chase them out of the yard soon. I assume she's already chased two of them away, since there were five in the litter.

Well, it's time to get ready for preaching. I sure do hate to leave this window, though. Such sights! The squirrels, and now a family of birds is making splashy use of one of the birdbaths. A butterfly as big as the palm of my hand is making the rounds of the flowerbeds, and something yellow and fast just flashed by. I hope it's a goldfinch. A smart-alecky mockingbird is perched on the fence on his skinny little legs, tail sticking up at its customary jaunty angle. I could identify a Texas mockingbird if all I could see was a silhouette, just by his "what's it to ya" posture. OK, gotta run. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

I forgot to say Happy Birthday to Miller yesterday, so here's a belated one. Happy 10th Birthday, Miller!
Although I've only seen the TV Land Award show once, it got old real quick. I'm with you, Ro. Why do they show it over and over? But, that seems to be their strategy on things. For example, why must they show 4 Bonanzas in a row, and then 4 Gunsmokes? (or maybe it's 3, I can't remember). We've seen em all, folks. Why doesn't TV Land pull out some of their collection of stuff that they showed when they first started. "Mr. Ed", "Hazel", "Ozzie & Harriet", "Father Knows Best", "The Flying Nun". Or "That Girl". They gave us a marathon of that about 6 months ago, and I thought they were going to put it in the line-up, but it never happened.
Well, I'm going down to the drugstore to get some icecream for later.

April 29, 2007 - Msg 51789: Good Sabbath porch pals. Beautiful morning here also. I just love this time of year, don't you?
Hope your birthday was a good one Miller, and hope your doing better Millie.

Boo, I hope Erin gets feeling better. What did you do with your day off yesterday? I hope Bruce wasn't like Barney was with Andy when he gave Andy a day off. :)

I've just about had it with TV land my own self. I seldom tune it in anymore because they have just gone a different direction. Oh well, thats life thru and thru.

Hazel, I'll be glad to go get ice cream. Your probably tired.

April 29, 2007 - Msg 51796: I'll try to be there tonight, Hazel. I've missed everybody.
Millie

April 29, 2007 - Msg 51797: Hazel, sounds like that squirrel would tell you to, "outrun him to the tire swing and if that don't work chase him out of the yard (house)". Good luck! I agree with you completely on the TVLand thing. I don't know why they don't give us the old sitcoms that we all know and love. Makes you wonder who is doing the decision making about those things down at TVLand headquarters. I think they need to gather for an old-fashioned summit in Aunt Bee's kitchen and figure out what viewers really want to see.

Thanks Asa, Erin seems to feel fine today and came to church to help me out in the nursery duty (we have to serve in that capacity about every 9 weeks, lots of folks pitch in because we only have one hired nursery worker). Anyway, she said her head hurt alittle but she seems fine to me. When she got in bed with me in the middle of the night last night, I noticed that when she fell asleep she started grinding her teeth like crazy. I wonder if that could have anything to do with the headaches. Anyone know? Anyway, you asked about my day off yesterday, I shopped till I dropped, then had lunch at my favorite Mexican food place...had some great, really greasy cheese enchiladas (good thing I don't have gallbladder problems). After that I came home, did a bit of reading and then took a little catnap. It was a good day. Later I too Erin out for ice cream, and that's about it.

Mavis- Congratulations Sweetheart! I'm so thrilled for you! Are you going to have a big church wedding and all? Tell us more about your plans.
Millie- I'm glad you're home from the hospital. I hope the radiation is successful and not painful.
Miller- Happy Belated Birthday! How does it feel to be a preteen?
Boo- What all did you buy on your shopping excursion? I love to shop! How's homeschool going? Jaw clenching does cause headaches, by the way. A good bite guard will help. I sleep in one every night for my TMJ.
Romeena- I'm glad that the Plum is doing well. What type of flowers do you recommend for heat and shade? I'm planning on vincas, but that's the only one I know.
Rev- Thank you for reminding us that Jesus loves us. I sometimes forget during the week, but I'm reminded on Sunday's and by you!
MDC- Glad to hear about your Mama's hand. I'd be embarrassed also about her position.
Hazel- I do not have TVLand, but I think that they need to go back to their original shows. I guess if they keep getting the audience for them they'll keep showing them.
Big Maude- I usually do my housework listening to a book on tape in my headphones (drowns out Nick), but watch tv while folding laundry.
Hey Possum, Spot, Homemaker, Tom, KyGirl, and anyone I've missed. Y'all have a great Sabbath!
Blessings to you and yours,
~Lucy

April 29, 2007 - Msg 51805: Hi, Lucy. Flowers for heat and shade? Hmmm. Begonias come to mind, the greenleaf kind. The bronzeleaf kind likes sun. Impatiens may do well also. They're kind of finicky, and hard to predict how they'll do. I'd just suggest planting some and see. I've planted them before and had them just look awful in a few weeks. Then last summer I planted about four flats in the back corner, around the arbor - all shade, they're tucked in under some nandina and spirea, get almost no sun at all, and they were beautiful. I put them there again this year, and they seem to be doing well again. Those two - begonias and impatiens - are about all I can think of that really tolerate complete shade and still bloom. Most bright bloomers want sunshine. A few others - rex begonias, for example - will do well, but are really expensive. They're sold "by the each", at about $4 per, as opposed to regular begonias and impatiens, which you can get for around $20 a flat or less. I never pay that much, as my garden center owner/neighbor gives me a generous "neighbor discount", about 20%.

Well, now I've seen it all. I was watching "How It's Made", and they visited a dairy farm. The cows are not confined to stalls, but have the run of the barn and the surrounding outdoor areas. Food is available at all times, there is an automatic cleaning device that keeps the barns clean of manure, and get this - milking is done on demand, at the cow's discretion! When she feels a bit full, she just ambles over to a milking station, where a laser-guided machine washes and disinfects her udder, then the cups seek out and attach to the appropriate appendages, and milking begins, untouched by human hands! Each cow wears a collar that emits a very low frequency signal which identifies her to the machine. Her visit is recorded, logging the amount of milk produced by each teat, and the milk is analyzed carefully. Any sign of infection, temperature elevation or other abnormality results in the milk being discarded and the cow's number is recorded so she can be examined by a vet. The only human I saw on the whole film was a guy tossing hay into troughs. Everything else is automatic, and on demand. The cow just goes to a station, gets in the proper alignment, and the machines take over. When finished, the cow strolls back to a hay trough to begin the whole process again. Amazing.

Well, off I go. I love that show, and it's still on. I want to see what they're doing now. Who needs TV Land? Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

April 29, 2007 - Msg 51809: I just wrote an email to TV Land about the eternal, infernal reruns of that lame awards show. I'm sure it will hit the trash bin immediately, but I tried.

While on their site, I saw an ad for DVDs of "The Dinosaurs". Does anyone else remember that show? It was just great! It didn't get the attention it really deserved, because most people saw it as a kid's show, but it wasn't. If you watched it and paid attention, it was very definitely a commentary on the human condition, and presented some excellent insights. I think I may see about getting the DVDs. It was that good.

My yard is just full of critters right now. Birds and squirrels in abundance. I just put out feed, and boy, did it draw a crowd! I wasn't even back in the house until two bluejays showed up and got in a big fight over the peanuts I put in the tray. I put a seedcake cylinder on the hanger, and now one of the juvenile squirrels is trying to figure out how to persuade the dove that's perched on top to leave. The dove is standing her ground, and the disgusted, perplexed little squirrel is just hanging out a few feet away. Oops! Here comes mama squirrel. Exit one dove, stage left. Mama is not so easily intimidated, but it didn't help the baby much, because now mama is perched on the seedcake! Poor little juvie, guess he's just out of luck. No problem, there's plenty of food on the ground. He was just curious about that seedcake. Oh, it's a circus out there!

April 29, 2007 - Msg 51811: Question: Do you ever just want to go on strike? To just run away for awhile? Andy & Opie would go fishing for their getaway. Aunt Bea would visit relatives. Well, THAT doesn't sound like a vaca. Sorry, I'm just burnt out. I cook, I clean, I yell at kids, cook, clean, yell at kids, make business calls for hubby, go to bed. Let's all get in a car (not one that Barney purchased from an elderly lady) and take off! Wouldn't it be fun if we took a bus to all our our houses?
Okay, well, gotta make the boys lunches for tomorrow, sigh. I will make some homemade butter pecan ice, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream for Millie.
Blessings,

Hello porch family

Boo...prayers for Erin.

Congrats to Mavis!

Lucy...the homemade ice cream sounds so good. Can't wait.

Nascar fans...didn't get to see all the race but what I saw was pretty good racing. But Kenseth didn't have the best day. Dropped a spot to 4th in the chase.

Spot...is this the same big event that you go to every year.

Well better get going.....You all have wonderful night and prayers for all of our porch family.

April 29, 2007 - Msg 51819: After skimming through the current posting page, it seems like the regulars are well, especially Millie and Sugarplum. And congratulations to Mavis on her upcoming wedding.

I've been out of action for a couple of weeks. I developed a leg infection that required a hospital stay up here in Canada. Censor here won't let me post more details.

Millie, got an extra meatloaf sitting around? I'm not talking no slices ... I mean an entire loaf. That's how much I love it.

Hey Lucy, I know how it feels to want a vacation! Things aren't so stressful for me right now but I keep wondering what I am going to do when summer comes and both kids are home all day!! I might as well buy a black and white striped shirt because I will be playing referee most of the time.

Well, why don't we all mess up our hair and try to recite the preamble to the constitution?...

Romeena, I sent you an email a few days ago asking a question about a friend who is having vertigo. Did you get it or did your spam-blocker keep it from getting to you? I want to send you something else but want to make sure it gets to you.

April 30, 2007 - Msg 51833: I remember the show 'Dinosaurs'! Boy, that sure was one of those type of shows that came along out of nowhere and threw your normal television viewing traditions for a loop, didn't it?! Kind of like ALF. Kind of off-kilter, but both good shows, that I must admit, I watched. I even found a little toy figure of the "Dad" dinosaur, Earl, at a Goodwill, and I just had to buy him. Couldn't pass that up because you know you will never find something like that again.

Hope everyone is feeling fine.

April 30, 2007 - Msg 51837: HOWDY FOLKS! this message was supposed to be posted yesterday but it wouldn't get past the 'security' until "Floyd" fixed it for me so it would. so here's what i said yesterday, altho now my responses are way late. better late then never! ;-)

***

hello all of you wonderful front-porchsters! DAPHNE here. it's been a long time. i have this page bookmarked and it just caught my eye, so i thought i'd drop by for a quick HELLO. i see all the regulars are still hanging out... how neat. i wish i had more time to hang with you all, cos i think everyone here seems really great. :)

here's a couple of quick responses:

i actually wrote TV Land a couple of months ago asking why they show so many hours in a row of bonanza. i also said i really missed the black and white shows like dennis the mennace and all those others listed above (in hazel's post). they never responded, but if everyone takes time to tell them they miss the old classics, could care less about the awards, and can't imagine how "white men can't jump" ever fit in to the 'personality' of their station, then perhaps they will go back to how they used to be in the beginning. it USED to be a terrific station!

hollywood freakin bites. and rosie DOES need to go jump in the lake. i pray for her soul first. can al gore please take hold of the hands in that circle?

so merle fest in NC is going on this weekend. i went last year but never did find those dilliards boys. i searched. charlene was there too but i didn't see her either. wonder if they are there again this year. i know on merle fest's website you can listen to the performers live. i outta tune in today for the last day. anyone have any of the dilliards cd's? i have one (a greatest hits album) and it's absolutely one of the best cd's i own. toe-stomping excellence. i buy records at thrift stores all the time, and i keep an eye out for any andy or dilliards albums. hope i find one someday!

does anyone know what andy is doing these days? i don't read or hear anything about him! i'm curious to know.

okay, well you all take care and have a wonderful, peaceful sunday. may god bless you all.

April 30, 2007 - Msg 51838: Welcome Stacey - nice to have someone from over and under, I mean under and over, err...down under visiting the porch! ; )

Good to see you, too, Poor Horatio! Sorry to hear you were ailing - glad you're on the mend.

Shame on me for not congratulating Asa on his "grandpa to be" status. How exciting for you and yours!

Hey spot - have fun judging the rodeo. Some of my hubby's coworkers attended the APPA Lineworker Rodeo a couple of weeks back down in Atlanta. If you hear any talk of someone "killing the dummy" during the Hurtman Rescue there, that was one of my hubby's coworkers. : D

Happy Monday All!

Big Maude, Cracker Barrell sounds good, and I could use a good meal.
Last night at Sarah's I had a nice chat with Boo, Poor Horatio, and Hazel. Thanks, you guys, just for listening to me, even when I'm not at my best. These are trying times, but the support of friends means so much. I really do believe God brought me to the porch, just so I could know y'all and the power of His love.

April 30, 2007 - Msg 51843: Millie - I believe that God brought you to the porch and into our lives for a reason as well. This from 2 Thessalonians 1:
11 Keeping this in mind, we never stop praying for you. Our God has chosen you. We pray that he will consider you worthy of his choice. We pray that by his power he will make every good thing you have planned come true. We pray that he will make perfect all that you have done by faith. 12 We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus will receive glory through what you have done. We also pray that you will receive glory through what he has done. We pray all these things in keeping with the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Please know that we pray for you and for your family through the trials you are enduring.
Thank you for gracing our lives!

April 30, 2007 - Msg 51845: Good afternoon everyone. I haven't had time for a thorough read of the archives, but I do have a few comments...

MAVIS: Congratulations! I'll remember to throw the rice underhanded.

MILLIE: What HM said. She may not be much with meatballs, but she has a way with words.

ROMEENA: Thanks for the paver advice on Friday.

ASA: Congrats on your grandpa-to-be-ness.

STACY: Welcome. Man, this must be a long porch to stretch all the way to Australia.

AFD: Good to see you coming around more. I bet the scenery is right perty out your way.

HORATIO: I hope that you mend up right. Take care and try and stop in more regular. I love to read your posts.

STERLING: How you can put Elle MacPherson and the Wiggles in the same sentence is beyond me. (And thanks for getting "Wiggly Party" stuck in my head.)

HM: I believe MILLIE's website is Bogarts something or other. How's that for detailed?

BOO: I hope Erin is feeling better. Now that things are moving along on your house, we better start planning that party. Won't you feel foolish if we all start to roll up in your yard and you don't have enough dip.

I've got more, but it'll have to wait. Duty calls. (Duty, not doody.)
