May 16, 2007 - Msg 52417: Actually, Possum, I've thought about the ins thing, butdon't think it would help. I have a $1500 deductible, and the unit would be depreciated pretty heavily - it's eight years old - which means I wouldn't get but probably $300-400 out of it. Not really worth it to have the "ding" on my record. You know how ins companies are these days. They just want you to keep sending your checks, but whatever you do, don't dare to file a claim. I probably will call my agent, but don't expect any help.

Hey Folks

Asa- Yes, I did watch the GOP debate last night. I'm not sure who I'm supporting. I not sure anyone wins any of these "modern era" debates, I think you can only lose them. I not saying I support him, in fact I don't, but I liked Paul's idea of shutting down the departments of energy and education, that'd be good for a start. Although, Rudy really slapped him down with his response to the 9-11 attacks. I think out of everyone running or maybe running, I like Newt or Fred Thompson, possibly Rudy (I'm a sucker for law and order types, no Me-They, that's not why I like Thompson).

Prayers for Jerry Falwell's family. I joined the Moral Majority when I was in high school. I drifted away from that part of conservatism but they have accomplished a lot of good. God Bless, Thomas Road Baptist Church.

Romeena-Today out at the bird feeders we had 6 Rose-breasted Grosbeak's they are a beatiful bird. We also had too many Goldfinchs to count. It is great living in the woods. I'll try and get ya picture.

God Bless the troops,

Millie, it's good to hear from you. I hope the new meds work wonders for you. Prayers, prayers, and more prayers!

The a/c man is coming this morning. No way could I exist in this house without a/c. God was looking out for me, and sent a cool front our way yesterday, which is still with us - temp in the 60's right now. However, it will be hot again by the weekend. If I could just open windows and get cross-ventilation, it would help some, but this house was designed for a/c. Only one window in each room, except the sunroom, and since there is an "inner core" (the den), there's no real air flow through the house. It's nine rooms - three wide and three deep. The kitchen, dining room and den are an open arrangement, each a separate room, but defined by railings and a large divider bar (no, not a wet bar, no alcohol in this house) instead of walls.

Now I've got another problem. The GFCI on the circuit that supplies the back yard lights and the pond pumps has tripped and won't reset. Guess something has shorted out there - possibly a squirrel has messed with one of the landscape lights. So, I've called the man on that, too. Seems like it's always something.

Have a great day, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

May 17, 2007 - Msg 52431: Good morning everyone. Yet another beautiful day here. It stormed mightily here yesterday. Glad no giraffes were milling about in the fields. Prayers for all that needs them today.

I had a great day yesterday. It was my 41st birthday. We had a nice dinner with one of my favorites—meatloaf. The Mrs. got me a delicious cake with vanilla butter cream icing—the good stuff not that supermarket Crisco icing. She had to drive 45 minutes to a bakery that makes them and she was wiped from working two back-to-backs. That’s love. The kids made me some cute birthday cards.

AUH2O and ASA: I caught most of the Republican debates the other night, and, I gotta tell you, if that’s the A-team, get ready for a Democratic president in ’08. McCain looked nervous, almost to the point of twitching. Tancredo is a one note wonder with the immigration. Too bad he doesn’t offer a real solution. Tommy Thompson was downright scary. I can’t imagine him winning city council. Rudy was, well, Rudy. Charismatic but devoid of substance except on his handling of a disaster. The best line of the night came when, after the moderator (Chris Wallace, I think) asked a question, Guliani started going off in another direction. Then, after he’d finished, Wallace said he’d give him another minute to actually answer the question. The guy from Texas (I forget his name) was (sorry, all you Texans out there) a loon and xenophobe, in my opinion. I could comment on some others, but you get the idea.

My hope is that Newt and Fred will run. Frankly, I’d vote for either one of them before I’d vote for any of the others. I don’t think Newt actually has a shot with the general public, for all the reasons that don’t matter. (Heck, even Hilary and some other Democrats have good things to say about him). And he is one smart cookie. Fred has at least played a president on tv ;).

Well, I gotta run for now but I’ll stop by later for a friendly chat (sorry, Lydia).

May 17, 2007 - Msg 52443: Hey, y'all. House is cooling down. The man has been here and worked his magic, and I now have a sleek, beautiful 5-ton unit sitting on its little concrete pad behind the house. It's so quiet you have to be within about six feet of it to even realize it's running. It was 88 in the house when he started the unit up, and in less than two hours, it's down to 74, which is about where I keep it, and the compressor has shut off. Considering it had warm furniture, warm walls, and warm flooring to chill, I think it has done wonderfully well.

The power out back is another story. The man can't come until tomorrow, so I used a 100' heavy duty extension cord, plugged into another circuit, and got the pumps running. The fish are very relieved. I can do without the back fence lighting tonight.

Well, that's more than you ever wanted to know about my problems, so I guess I'll quit chewing your ears off. A cool and happy Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Yeah, I'm hoping that Fred Thompson does throw his hat into the ring. I think he is what we need now, someone who has an interesting personality; tells it like it is AND can tell it like it is in a charismatic way. Something I don't think G.W. does very well. Now don't get me wrong, I like G.W., but sometimes when he is speaking, or trying to, he even makes ME wince.

Glad to hear cooler heads are prevailing at your place, Romeena! :)

May 17, 2007 - Msg 52446: Hahahaha! Sterling, the joke is on us! Your description of the window "buttons" is really funny, and funnier still because none of us caught it! Or if anyone did, they kept quiet. I was really trying to figure it out, because my DIL's Tahoe has weird buttons that took me a while to figure out one day when I drove the thing to the airport. You lift up on them, as I remember, and I thought you might have something like that. It never entered my mind that you were describing window cranks. Are we spoiled, or what?

Well, it's cold in here!! Gotta go adjust the thermostat, or freeze. I guess the new a/c is working okay. I really hated to spend that much money, especially since the unit was only about 8 years old, but when lightning strikes, there's not much you can do. It really fried it. I guess I'm fortunate it didn't take out anything else at the same time. I was sitting about fifteen feet away, only in the house, of course, at my big old window. Scary!

MDC-Hey buddy! Thanks. Mitt is a question mark that's for sure.

Me-They I think Rudy brings a little more to the table besides being mayor on 9-11. He really helped clean up that city. NYC was mess. As for the War-Czar maybe we do need one, I'm not sure. I think the title is a little over the top but, I guess, the "Coordinator" doesn't have that great of a ring to it and the title "Grand Wizard" was all ready taken. With the exception of Paul, everyone on the stage during the GOP debate realizes we are in the middle of a war on terror, as elementary as that sounds, many people running for Prez don't believe it.

What a combination, for someone with allergies to those two things. They're generally powerful allergies, with big consequences, not just sniffles or something simple.

I can't believe how quiet the new a/c unit is. Seriously, unless you're standing almost right beside it, you can't hear it running. It appears to be very well balanced, and well insulated. Seems to me both factors would improve its life expectancy. I think that's what happened to Aunt Bee's freezer, it wore itself out dancing around on the porch!

Well, I'm going to bed. I never did get a nap today, after working last night, and I'm tired. However, I've learned by experience that there is a point where I push through the fatigue, and then I'm wide awake. I don't want to go there, I need some sleep!

Besides there's no sense in filling up.

Romeena, that new a/c unit must have a scroll type compressor in it. They are very quiet and use a lot less power. Very nice units indeed. I would still encourage you to have a surge protector installed on it though. I never put one in without it. There are a lot of transiet voltages that can play havoc with equipment.

Frankie, you're real funny aren't you!? Listen, the reason you didn't recognise my song was because the Rev's gee-taring was a little off. Now don't get me wrong, he's a fine fellow and all but I was trying to get him to pick up the pace but he only has but the one speed.

Boy, I was watching The Day After on sci-fi channel last night. Even though it was made in the 80's, that movie is still scary, even after all these years. And maybe even more so now, especially since we know there are people who would actually do that, and wouldn't think twice about themselves or the safety of their own children.
And on that cheery note, I'll say, have a good day everyone. ;)

While we're on the topic of food, are there any other blue cheese lovers on the porch? I'm not know if it's a geographical problem or just plain slobbery but there was a time, somewhere between after high school and before graduating from college, when me and my brother would put blue cheese on nearly everything we ate. Then one day we had some boiled hot-dogs (I know, I know boiled hot-dogs !!? YIKES) and we both smothered them in blue cheese. It was at that moment we decided we may have a problem with the bottle or should I say the jar, blue cheese jar. Every now and again I still fall off the wagon.

My wife loves blue cheese, and I'll have some every now and again but I prefer thousand island, if it's good.

And I enjoy a good peanut butter sammich. Never had it with no nanners though. Sounds awful. And no chocolate either Boo. I like my chocolate straight! LOL

Dr. P. I'm real handy with a brush but I have the misery in my back, or maybe it's lumbago, whatever it is I doub't I'll be much use to you. Now Spot and Homemaker, they are painting fools. Maybe they'll come help out. Just stay away from hm's meatballs. They is awful!

Good to see you AFD. Glad all is well.

Sure a pretty day here. 82, sunny with a gentle breeze. Well perfect is what it is.

May 18, 2007 - Msg 52479: Good afternoon, all. Just home for a few minutes. I went with a group from church to a "mystery lunch" outing - we don't know until the bus leaves the church just where we're going. All we know is what time we'll be back. Anyway, we ended up out in Lewisville at a Japanese restaurant, where they do all the fancy knife tricks, and cook the food on the hibachi table top right before your very eyes. You know, Benihana style. It was very good, I chose steak and the chef cooked it exactly the way I wanted it. Really very good.

Bleu cheese? Love it, just love it! Or blue cheese, I know the French use bleu, but America seems to use blue. I like the real thing, crumbled in salads, or on a burger. Goooood!! The stinkier, the better.

Now I have to go pick up my co-grandma, and we're meeting our kids at the ballpark, to watch the grandson's game, then I'm bringing both grandsons home with me for the night. Sugarplum will be in a snit, but she'll get over it.

Millie, I finally got my package mailed. Tell the folks at Bogart's to watch for it.

May 18, 2007 - Msg 52480: Peanut butter and banana sandwiches....YUM, YUM! Ever tried them grilled? TGIF, it's been a long week at work. I had therapy on my arm today for one hour...thought I'd croak before he was finished, I have two more sessions then I'll be all done. I can drive with both hands now with no problem...that was my main goal along with being able to style me hair. Ladies ever try to do you hair with one hand???

Frankie

May 18, 2007 - Msg 52481: Impossible, Frankie...it can't be done, can it?

Just got back from taking the kids to the pool and now relaxing and watching alittle TAGS...watching the Daphne and Skippy ep right now; the one where they breeze into town and make Thelma and Helen jealous.

Ro-I think, although I could be wrong (but don't tell M-T he thinks so highly of me, it just may crush the boy) the French translation of blue is bleu. And, bleu/blue cheese is named that because the mold in it is blue...err bleu. I love the real thing as well as the dressing.

Spot-Golly Bob howdy! Does that meal sound good! Fried green tomatoes yummy!

Frankie-I agree with Boo that does sound adventurous.

Anyone ever have a grilled cheese with peanut butter, the way the peanut butter and cheese melts together, well it's good.

May 18, 2007 - Msg 52485: Just like Elvis ate 'em, huh SPOT? That's what I heard somewhere.

I have never tried fried green tomatos. How do you make them and what do they taste like? Anything like fried eggplant?

Hmmm, grilled cheese with peanut butter Auh2o? Now THAT is something I have never heard of...don't think I'm that adventurous.

Boo

May 18, 2007 - Msg 52486: Evenin' Y'all! Peanut butter & banana sandwiches are pretty good-never had a PB& chocolate, although I once had a melted Hershey's sandwich! Somebody talked us into eating that back in high school.I don't recall if I liked it or not (too long ago-ha!)
Asa, Laci is doing good. I've never told y'all that she has cerebral palsy. I think I did mention a few times about the muscle weakness in her left ankle. Anyway,to make a long story short, she has had Botox injections in her ankles, been stretched & put in casts twice, then got braces. She finally got a walker after Christmas & does great with it.Outdoors she runs! She goes to OT & PT and has come a long way.Still not walking on her own,but we think she can-she has a lot of "scaredy cat" in her,if that makes any sense. We let go of her,she grabs for us or goes to the floor. When she gets over that fear she is gonna just take off one day! I KNOW she will walk.God promised me so. Also, because of the CP,she doesn't talk much. Does most of it at home around mommy & daddy. We don't have any communication problems because we just know Laci so well. She took speech for awhile and wasn't getting her needs met,so we're in the process of getting her in with a new therapist.
Her health problems are all physical-she's sharp as a tack!Sometimes we've questioned by a few "well-meaning" strangers as to if she has Down's Syndrome. That child has been through genetics testing(and every other test) and is A-okay. I don't really take offense because I think it's the fact she wears glasses and just has a unique look. Her heart is fine now- she just checks in yearly with her cardiologists.
Besides her mom, I am Laci's main caregiver, because I know her like the back of my hand. I choose not to work so that I can be available to her when she needs me.I worked with Special needs kids for over 20 years, including several with CP. I tell people that God knew who to give Laci to!This sort of reads like I'm bragging-y'all please don't take it like that. The entire family does excellent with her, especially my daughter).I'll have to get some updated pictures of her to Romeena so y'all can see how much she's grown and see her with her walker (if she'll stay still long enough to take a photo!).
So,keep praying for our Laci.Prayers have brought her this far and that's a long way from that little preemie with the hole in her heart.
Sorry if this is too long. I've been wanting to share this with y'all-just never took the time to lay out the details.
Well, I'll let somebody else sit and rock in my chair for a while- y'all have a great evening!
Love to all!

It was my own daughter's birthday yesterday too. She's 15. I just had to drag up a rocker to share this link with ya'll, but I don't know how to make a link. If someone can do it for me, great. If not, you'll have to cut and paste. This is a super article that appeared in our local paper regarding VICKS!! Had to share. Hope you can get to it.

May 18, 2007 - Msg 52499: Hey, everybody. Just got home from the T-ball game, got two little grandsons with me, already stuck them in bed. They're tired, and so am I.

Tom, I'm glad you're back. We miss you when you stay away. I know you popped in a couple of times, but you weren't around very much. I hope things are looking a bit brighter for you.

auh2o, you are so kind, being so diplomatic. You know very well that bleu=blue in French vs English, but my comment did make it sound like I didn't know that. Actually, I do - what I meant was that while the French naturally use bleu, and Americans used to, it seems that many are now just not bothering with the hoity-toity pronunciation of bleu, and just saying plain old "blue". The correct French pronunciation of "bleu" sounds like someone about to gag, in my Texas-influenced opinion. As for the origin of the name, I did try not to dwell on that, because the idea of deliberately consuming mold, whatever the color, would probably gross out some of our more tender tummies around the porch. Personally, since I have the appetite of a billy goat, and the digestion of a garbage disposal, the idea of the mold has never bothered me. As I said earlier, when it comes to cheese, the stinkier the better to me. Millie, order one of those Bogart Blues for me. Let me see, would the French be Bogart Bleux? I don't speak French.

Drat. The lights are off in the back yard again, GFCI is tripped and won't reset. My handyman friend was here, had them working, but they're off again. I'm wondering if it's the underwater pond lights. They're on a photosensor, and wouldn't have been on at the time Ted was here, so perhaps when they came on after dark it tripped again. Guess I'll go unplug them and see if I can reset the thing. Back in a minute --- OK, I'm back. Nope, didn't work. All power to the pond accessories is now unplugged, and the GFCI still won't reset, so the problem has to be in the landscape lights. Guess I'll have to call Ted to come back. Rats.

Well, I'm off to bed. Kids aren't quite asleep, but they're close. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Possum, thank you for sharing Laci's progress with us. It's a priviledge to pray for her and I look forward to hearing more about her. God give you strength and continue to bless you greatly for your loving care of Laci.

Well Erin just woke up and wondered in here with her hair sticking up. Guess I better go. I will check out that VICKS article a little later. Have to go pick up my sister's puppy and dog-sit until tomorrow. Today is her birthday and her hubby took her out of town so I am babysitting the dog and her two grandkids....could be a really interesting day (the puppy and one of the kids are still not potty-trained!)

May 19, 2007 - Msg 52503: Greater love hath no sister than this, that she babysit her sister's dog and two grandkids. Boo, you're a treashuh! Wish I had such a sister. I only have a brother. He's a good one, but I'd still like to have a sister.

Possum, you're another saint of the porch. I'm looking forward to seeing some new pictures of Laci - you send 'em, I'll post 'em! Prayers for little Laci, as always.

Well, guess I'd better go rig up my extension cord again and get those pond pumps working. I don't know if my fix-it friend will get here today or not. He hasn't called me back, and he may be out of town. His mom was recently widowed, lives about 150 miles from here, out in the country. He's concerned about her and goes down to check on her about every weekend.

Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

May 19, 2007 - Msg 52504: What a sweet thing to say, Ro, thanks! I wish you had a sister, too. I like to help my sister out when I have the opportunity because she does so much for me and rarely needs anything since it's just her and her husband at home now.....and now the puppy (Betsy), who seems very much like a little baby right now. Sweet little thing, I just love her. Good luck with those pumps.

May 19, 2007 - Msg 52505: I for one am glad I do not have a sister or brother! I've always enjoyed the privacy and I enjoyed growing up a little more spoiled and as the center of attention from family! I guess though as I get older and lose elder family members I will wish I had a brother or sister, because family is important!
