How is this for Dallas roots...Mother worked as one of hundreds of secretaries for H.L. Hunt and my Dad graduated from Baylor Dental School in 1957. I was born nine months later in Monroe, La.

As you know, I have lived in Big D. since 1987, the Majestic is a great place to hear a good artist give a concert.

Ray: Do you still live in the Dallas area? If yes, what part?

Spot: Get off work, go have breakfast and then get on that lake and hit them fish hard. Wednesday night I will be cooking some more of those Bayou Bass that we caught this weekend. Louisiana Fish Fry Lemon Pepper Mix. A lifelong Georgia man pronounces pecan as pee-Kan, I have learned something today.

May 29, 2007 - Msg 52863: No, Dud, Ray now lives in the northern sector of San Antonio. I know the area well, and it's beautiful. Looks like where I grew up. Oh wait, it IS where I grew up! Maybe that's why it looks like it. Actually, he lives a few miles east of where I lived, but it's much the same kind of terrain. Scrub oak, mesquite, mountain laurels, fairly poor soil, lots of caliche, good goat country. A wild beauty of its own. --Romeena

The "Dud"

May 29, 2007 - Msg 52865: And for you Yankees who are wondering what caliche is - it's a white or very light tan-colored soil, mostly a chalky form of clay. Doesn't serve well as topsoil, but trees like mesquites love it. There is often a water table beneath it, and mesquites put down a taproot like pecan trees do, and can reach that water. It tends to run in undulating bands, diving low and covered with rich earth in places, then rising to form white escarpments and bluffs elsewhere. It really is beautiful, to look out over a green valley, and see the white outcroppings here and there. --Romeena

M-T, any news on your Mrs.' job situation?

Asa - Reagan isn't walking yet, but I don't think it's that far away. Do you have any newer pics of Mariah to send Ro? and when did you say the arrival of grandbaby #2 is?

Let's see, my only (sort-of) tie to Dallas is my grandmother used to work in a couple of Jack Ruby's clubs (as a bartender) way back when. : 0

Mavis, thanks for sharing those pics with us - you guys sure make a fine looking couple. I pray every happiness for you and Robert in your life together.

Puh-kahn pie - love it, but only in small doses as it's so rich. A gal I used to work with would make little miniature ones (about the size of an OREO) and pass them out at Christmas time. They were just right size - enough to satisfy the taste buds without being too much.

Well, I better head out and get some sleep. Oh yeah, before I forget - WELCOME Dud!

Friday is good, I will bring the peanut oil, the fish fry fixin's and the fire extinguisher. Got to go down to the Bayou tomorrow and catch some more Bass, maybe some Bream (Bluegill) and some Chinqipins (Sun Perch) for variety. Maybe only the Bass, some people can't handle a few bones in them other fish.

My best friend in the Dallas area lives right off Lake Lewisville. He has a 19'Ranger bass boat that we can catch fish everytime we go out (mainly by trolling the old creek channels).

Like yourself, he has since bought a nice addition to his fleet, a 26' Larson Cabin Cruiser. Sleep 4 with dinnete, kitchen and bath. He only wants to take the big one out these days to catch ladies and the Ranger stays docked and we can't catch any fish using the Cabin Cruiser. Trolling with that big of an engine at the lowest speed, sure makes a racket to those fish. The ladies sure like the bathroom that's on board. Looking forward to porch sitting Friday. Take care.

http://www.youtube.com/mayberrycom

The link above takes you directly to the Mayberry Channel and it should keep you away from any "questionable" videos.

YouTube.com is no more "bad" than cable TV is "bad." You just have to be careful where you turn and make sure you stay on target with your channel hopping.

Stay on The Mayberry Channel and you'll be fine. I have 7 videos I uploaded and "Favorites" of other videos. My "Playlist" has a section of just links to TAGS clips right from the show.

When Romeena was talking about how she'd eat her Mom's pecan pie and it would bring tears to her eyes, I thought about homemakers meatballs and how they bring tears to my eyes when I bite into em. I reckon there are tears and then there are tears! (love ya hm)

AFD, I do have tons of pics of Mariah. I just need to get them sent off to Ro. I'll get her done. Stacey is due with number two in December. All is well so far, thanks for asking.

Well both Floyd and Mavis is buying breakfast today huh? Well I got a powerful hunger so this is a good thing. I didn't want to drain Mavis' bank account.

Romeena, you gave a name to the hidden poster, Laura. Did I miss the name somewhere or did you just make one up? I'm confused, but that don't take much to do anymore.

Anyway, Laura, or whoever you are, please pull up a rocker and join in. Glad to have you join us. I guess there is no law about having a name, but it does seem the neighborly thing to do. Do you cook? Can always use another cook on the porch.

May 30, 2007 - Msg 52894: Good morning everyone.

Thanks for restating, FLOYD, though it seems I’m the only one who doesn’t understand English. I caught a couple of the videos yesterday. I especially like the Count Istvan Teleky skit. You were great.

RAY: I, too, was taken aback by your comment but, having the luxury of simply reading on through the rest of the posts, saw your explanation right after. I don’t know your heart, but you sound sincere enough and that’s all I need. That tongue really is like a sword, isn’t it?

AFD: Veda, too, just can’t wait to walk. She hasn’t crawled yet and will likely go right to walking. She’s a joy! The Mrs. will begin her new job next month. I’ll fill y’all in at another time because I’m pressed for time right now and want to clear something up…

LAURA: First, two wrongs do not a right make; I’m sorry for my cross post yesterday. That said, and much calmer, I would like to reiterate that while it is not required to identify your posts, it is polite.

As far as this forum being open to anyone, that technically is true—at least until FLOYD decides it is not. Although he pretty much leaves it to us to keep the porch Mayberry-like, he is the ultimate arbiter of the use of this board. He has blocked troublemaking posters before.

While my reaction was not in the correct spirit, I admit, I do stand by my general observation. We have conversations here on the porch. We get to know each other. To lurk in the background reading those conversations and come swooping in with a judgmental, anonymous one-line commentary doesn’t strike me as very Mayberry-like. If you have something to say about something that’s posted it seems the better course of action may be to introduce yourself and flesh out your comments a bit. Of course, that is just one man’s opinion.

Now, about me being convicted by your comments, well, I get convicted all the time. Like when I find myself watching a racy commercial during a “G-rated” program on tv, or when I speak angry to my kids, or when I drive on by somebody holding up a sign on the side of the road, or when I see an elderly lady cutting her grass as I drive by on a hot day. Yes, I get convicted a number of times any given day. But I get convicted by what’s in my heart, not by verbal (or printed) zingers. In fact, I did get convicted about our comments yesterday—not because of what you said, but because of the way I said what I did. So, whatever your intentions were, and I’ll give the benefit of the doubt here, you may like to know that God convicts my heart when He sees fit, and He doesn’t do one-liners.

So, bygones to you. I hope that you will offer me the same courtesy.

Prayers for everyone today.

Anyway, when you think of Laura, laugh, don't cry; I know she'd want it that way...

Mavis:::: Yes. I am a long suffering (until last year) New Orleans Saints Fan. I am the original Saints fan. I attended the first pre-season game in Shreveport La.(1967) VS. the Minnesota Vikings (yes, we lost). My sister lived in New Orleans (mostly French Quarter) for over 30 years. Love that Super Dome (post Katrina its even better, thank you US taxpayers). I am a LSU fan also. Played the game from age of seven to senior in High School. Go SAINTS! Beat those cowboys last 4 out of 5 times, including last year at Texas Stadium. ( I was there in all my black and gold colors).

Spot: Didn't have much luck fishing this morning on the Bayou, caught an Alligator Gar, 2 Turtles and some bait snatchers. Will try again tomorrow.

May 30, 2007 - Msg 52902: Good Afternoon Porch,
We made it back from St. Simon's Island safe and sound. Bryson and I got burnt to a crisp, but other than that it was a wonderful vacation. The boys would have liked to do more, but all hubby and I wanted to do was lay on the beach and do that very unAmerican thing called relaxing.
Tom & Asa- Happy Belated Birthday!
Boo- How are you doing since it has been a week or so since Karen passed on into those pearly gates?
Dud & Laura- How do you do? Welcome to the porch. I'm a U of Kentucky basketball fan, Braves baseball, Bulldog and Falcon football fan.
Romeena- How's Sugarplum feeling?
Homemaker- Are most of your goats born in the spring? Did you find another dog?
Big Maude- Is your son going to college this fall?
Mavis- I'll take a look at Ro's website. I'm just so happy for you. Is your son happy with getting a stepfather?
Me-They- I'm glad the Mrs is starting a new job. That other one was really stressful for her.
AFD- My friends daughter is 13 months old and is just learning to cruise. She didn't learn to crawl until she was 12 months. I remember when Bryson started he just ran!
Floyd- Thank you for letting us know about youtube. My stepson is on there all the time watching paintball videos. Maybe I'll give it a try.
Spot- How's your garden this year? Do y'all have the water restrictions in Cobb also?
Hey to everyone else. I have to do some laundry before taking Bryson to the pool. I found out on Monday that my stepdaughter, Michaela, is coming tomorrow for 7 weeks. Please pray for us. I already have my hands full with Nicholas and Bryson and to add her, well, is more work and stress. My gastroenterolgist said my reflux is out of control again and said I have to eat a lowfat diet, exercise, and reduce stress. Well, it will soon be increased, but what can I do? When I married Bryan, I also married his 2 children and apparently his psycho ex. Anyway, I need to prepare for Michaela so I'll get off. Y'all have a wonderful Mayberry day!

May 30, 2007 - Msg 52924: Hey, all... Sorry I've been so "absent", but the power went out around here just before ten this morning, and just came back on a couple of minutes ago, after nine. Off nearly twelve hours. Spot, where were you when I needed you??

Asa, I didn't just make the assumption that Laura posted the anonymous posts as well. I know she did, or someone in her immediate vicinity did. Anyway, it doesn't matter now. I think the ground has been well-covered, the ball is in Laura's court, and she is welcome, if she chooses to remain.

Lucy, you have my sympathy and prayers - I know what you're going to be facing for the next seven weeks. Hang in there, friend - give way when you can, but stand your ground when you must.

I must run for now, lots of things to catch up on after a day spent without power. It was wonderful. Plenty of light for reading in the sunroom, couldn't do much else, couldn't even get the car out of the garage (door is too heavy for me to lift) so I just got caught up on some peaceful pursuits and reading. Now there's laundry, emails, such as that to catch up on.

Sugarplum (who is doing just fine, thank you all) says hey! --Romeena

May 30, 2007 - Msg 52925: By the way, Laura, is your middle name Lee and your last name Hobbs? --Romeena

May 30, 2007 - Msg 52926: Too bad the power didn't go out on a work day, Ro. You would have had to call in. "Sorry, I just can't come to work, I can't get my car outta the garage. I'd really like to be there, but sheesh, I just can't."
Lucy, it's hard for me to imagine that you just found out on Monday that your step-daughter is coming tomorrow. What does the court order say? When was she suppose to come? How could it just be sprung on you like this? I feel for you; you need time to get ready.

Lucy....you hang in there. Prayers are being lifted up on your behalf.

Spot....have a great time on the boat. Enjoy!

Dud...thanks for the invitation. I'll take you up on that.

auh2o...I will surely keep you posted with my version of "On The Road".

Ro...glad you got your power back on.

You folks have a blessed night. Prayers for all.

May 31, 2007 - Msg 52928: Dud - I would say that my secret ingredient to my meatballs is oregeno but we all know that is what goes in my spaghetti sauce. It's Andy's favorite!

This year - we have had goats born almost nonstop since December. We try for March babies but sometimes we don't get the buck pulled out in time and well, boys will be boys! We did not get another dog yet. . .since we are going to be moving in late fall, we are trying to wait but we saw some really cute puppies in Tennessee this past weekend that made us yearn for a new dog. So - I don't know.

My parents move into their new home tomorrow. They are taking their beloved outside dog with them. He is old and crippled so we hope he makes the move okay. Bo is one good guard dog for them. SO - here is praying that that goes well.

Rev - keep up the good work - maybe we will all get to see you sometime when you are on the road. Is your intinerary posted on your website?

May 31, 2007 - Msg 52929: Morning dears. How is everyone this fine day? Well I pray.

Homemaker, you are a good natured lady for taking all the fun I poke at you. Thanks for your sense of humor. Not enough of that these days.

Floyd, sorry about making you work so hard yesterday. But you know when a fellow gets hungry and another fellow is offering to buy... well it's just a recipie for gluttony.:)

Millie, I pray you are doing ok. Haven't heard from you and I sure do understand if you're not able to post. Just know we love you and are praying for you and your family during these stressful time.

Lucy, good to see you and prayers for your situation. Thanks for the birthday wishes.

Where has Big Maude been?

Rev, keep on keeping on buddy.

Spot, you got breakfast covered? Well uncover it already! I'm famished!

Hazel, I'm still trying to find out more about Red Butte Gardens. I'll get back to you soon. I know this much, it's a botanical garden and quite pretty from what I hear. Just not sure about seating. It may have an ampitheater.

I wish Laura, or whoever the hidden poster is would join us full time. I'll even dust off the rocker. But realise, that will make me hungry. There is always a price to pay.

And Dud, I'm not a Colts fan. That would be Homemaker. Although I was happy to see them win the big one last year. Manning is pretty good and I really appreciate Tony Dungy, a class act if there ever was one. My team is the horrible awful Raiders. I almost am ashamed to say it. I have followed them since I was just a punk for whatever reason and I just can't seem to break the allegence. Weird huh?

Auh2o, so what do you think of Thompson entering the race? I don't know much about him but he seems to be one a lot of conservatives like. If he is truly conservative I'll back him.

Time to get to work for me. I'd love to sit and jaw with y'all, but someones gotta guard the bank.

Prayers for all.

As for candidates - I kind of like that Arkansas gov. He really put Edwards on the spot with his haircut remark.

Prayers for Millie - I think and pray for you daily. Dud, you might want to read the archives to know why we are so concerned about Millie and why she is so special to us all (even though she makes a great reuban!)

Dud, TXU had better not charge me AT ALL for those hours! If they do, I'll demand a re-read on my meter. Ha!

Haven't seen the little parakeet today, and didn't see him yesterday. I can only hope someone rescued him, and has him inside where he'll be safe. I'll still keep extra millet out in the feeders, though, just in case.

Well, time for some lunch. Guess I'll finish off the last of that tired chicken salad. I made too much. Even I, who love leftovers, am ready to see the bottom of that bowl.

May 31, 2007 - Msg 52947: Hey Me-They, it has been a vry busy day for me trying to catch up on the laundry and housework that didn't get done last week! I still have 3 loads to wash and put away, and still need to change the linens on the beds...I'm tired. Bruce just got home from the doc because of a sinus infection he has so I have to go pick up an antibiotic script for him and then go see Karen's sister about something. Whew! No time to rest today. I would be happy to discuss Blue Like Jazz with you. You may have to refresh my memory a bit on some things. I know I was very comfortable with most things in the book but felt a bit uncomfortable with other things. We could discuss it via email if you like. I am uncomfortable posting my email address but Ro has it, I know and would email it to you if she has your address. Or, we can just discuss it here, whichever you prefer is ok with me.

Better go do something...things will get easier next week (I hope).

May 31, 2007 - Msg 52951: Hello all. Millie wanted me to stop by and give you a head's up. She went back in the hospital yesterday. They found that the cancer has spread. They are running more tests to determine what to do next. Depending on the course of treatment, she may be in the hospital for a while or back home in a few days. Will update you when we know. ~Millie's husband.

Hope all are doing ok. Lately, when I wake up in the morning (no matter how i feel) I say "Thank you Lord for another beautiful day, alleluia!" Helps get in the right frame of mind.

May 31, 2007 - Msg 52953: To Millie's husband. Thank you for the heads up on Millie. I am very sad to hear the cancer won't go away especially after all she has experienced. Thank God she has a caring husband and family to offer her love and support. I only wish we could do more for her. She continues to be on my prayer list. Tell her to hurry up and get well so she can see my picture at Romeena's photo album. I'm sure it will make her laugh.

May 31, 2007 - Msg 52954: To Millie's husband - thank you so much for letting us know what's going on. We have all come to love that girl, and have been so inspired by her strength and courage. Please tell her that we are all praying for her, and the circle expands, as many of us have our friends and family praying for her as well. Also, please give sweet Miller a big hug from all his aunts and uncles here on the porch. We love that kid! I know, he has siblings and we pray for them as well, but I guess we just know Miller a little better, since he joins us now and then. God bless and keep you, as you support the one you love through all of this. --Romeena
