September 21, 2007 - Msg 56074: Good morning, folks, - almost good afternoon! I was up and out early, had to get the car over to the dealership to have that phone thing changed out. It's done, and they even added 30 complimentary minutes. When you buy a car from Sewell, even a pre-owned car like I do, you always get royal treatment.

I understand completely, Me-They, sometimes it's hard to go to a place where you know you will get emotional. Personally, I've found it comforting to come here and talk about Millie, but everyone deals with emotional situations in their own way. I don't visit the cemetery and my husband's grave every time I go to Fredericksburg. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, according to how my heart leads at the moment.

Hazel, thank you for posting that beautiful description of your special relationship with Millie. It makes me wish I had made more of an effort to get to Sarah's, to join in, but perhaps it's good that I didn't. Too many voices at once might have hampered the special bond the two of you were forging. It sounds like PH fit right in, but any more might have been too many. I think it's lovely, and I'm so glad you were there for her.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO KAI!

Folks, I don't wish to be an alarmist, but I've been reading more and more stuff about aspartame, the sweet stuff in NutraSweet. Now I'm reading that it will kill fireant mounds, and when sprinkled around in corners in cabinets it will keep ants out of your kitchen. I haven't tried it, but am about to do so, as the little p-ants are about to make me crazy. They're everywhere! I can't sit anything down that they don't get into it, and forget storing crackers or anything not sealed airtight, unless you like to eat ants. They even got in the peanut butter when I hadn't put the lid on tight enough! Miserable little wretches.

Now I'm reading that aspartame consumption can cause symptoms like MS and lupus. Asa, had you heard about this? I don't know how much truth there is in it, there are conflicting reports, but I say where there's smoke, there's fire. Just because a product is on the market doesn't necessarily mean it's safe. Remember thalidomide, DES, Fen-fen, and even tobacco, for that matter.

Well, on that happy note, I'll go plant something. Have a great day, folks. --Romeena

September 21, 2007 - Msg 56075: Actually, Ro, although the times were special when it was just me and Millie over at Sarahs, it was always great fun when more people came. One time we had 5! Millie had a great time, and there was TAGS talk and quotes all over the place. I really wish more people would get over there. But I understand.
Well, I've got the day off. Think I'll show my family I still remember how to make chocolate chip cookies. It's been years. I hope I can find my mixer...

Actually, I am leaving work early today to celebrate our anniversary and wanted to stop back and wish everyone a nice weekend. Thank you all for your kind words of understanding. I'll talk to y'all next week. Take care and act like somebody (like you all wouldn't!).

And Happy Birthday Kai! Maybe we'll be able to get all the porch kids together someday for a big 'ole playdate.

Happy anniversary to Mr.& Mrs. Me-They! Sorry about the loss of your friend(s.) Oh,and I did remember Mrs. Me-They's birthday-hope she had a nice day.

Hazel, your post earlier about Millie was very touching. Since 7:30 was a special time to Millie, maybe we could all pause at 7:30 tonight (that would be 9:30 EST,which was "Millie's time") and light a candle in her memory. What do y'all think?

Prayers for Asa's wife-today was her liver biopsy. I'm sure Asa will bring us up to date when he's able.

Y'all have a good night.Light a candle, say a prayer for Millie at 9:30 EST,if you wish to honor her in that manner.

September 21, 2007 - Msg 56094: Good afternoon, all. Just got back from lunch with my grandson and his other grandma. He's going to spend the weekend with her. He's such a little mess!

DWF, thank you for asking about the Plum. I'm very sorry to say, but I lost her on August 16. She was just miserable, unable to walk at all, and having trouble breathing due to enlargement of her liver, caused by cancer, apparently. So, I loved her enough to let her go. It nearly broke my heart, and it has been terribly lonely around here without her. I'll be getting another Maltese puppy on Nov. 6. I talked it over with the Plum, in my heart, and she encouraged me to go ahead, so I am. The puppy is only seven weeks old right now, and the breeder won't release her yet, so I have to wait. I don't have a name for her yet, but probably something to do with Starr - at least that's what I've been calling her.

Guess I'd better go start supper. I got the makings of a great ratatouille, but I may just add a bit of beef and turn it into stew. Either way, it will be good.

See you later, folks. --Romeena

September 21, 2007 - Msg 56095: Hazel, I just posted my first message at Millie's other TAGS forum. Then I came here and read your Msg 56059. I thought I was past the crying stage but I had to get a tissue after reading that posting of yours. Then I got mad at myself for not being there with both of you that night.
And yes, we can meet again over at Sarah's in maybe about one week. I tried popping in there last night but had to leave immediately. It still hurts knowing Millie won't be joining us. But doesn't it seem contradictory that I have no problems posting here even though I won't be seeing anymore of Millie's postings? Could it be the real time aspect of Sarah's that made it more personal? Or could it be because I need to relate my feelings about this and the Front Porch is the best way to reach everyone?

MDC and Romeena, I am monitoring the Richmond Times Dispatch newspaper web site at http://www.legacy.com/TimesDispatch/DeathNotices.asp. I also left a message at Bogart's for Millie's husband. So far, no news about Millie's services yet.

Mrs. Wiley, I like your idea about having a tribute to Millie at the top of the pages here. I will email Floyd about that.

possum under a rock, I also like your suggestions to honor our friend Millie. I will participate.

Me_They, thanks for sharing those tender comments with us about your personal tragedies.

Romeena, regarding aspartame, check out http://www.greenfacts.org/en/aspartame/. The owners of that site are an independent European non-profit organization with no special connections to the aspartame industry.
And coffee drinkers should check out http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article788739.ece.

Deputy Warren, Sugarplum is now sitting on Millie's lap up in Heaven. Read about it in the archives at August 16, 2007 - Msg 55006.

Ro: can I eat supper with you tonight. I've run out of ideas! ~New Neighbor

September 21, 2007 - Msg 56099: Well, according to that study and report, aspartame is stated to be safe. PH, if I liked the stuff, I'd find that link very reassuring. However, once again I must point out that many products have been released and later recalled due to unexpected bad side effects. Thalidomide is the most memorable, I guess, and as I recall, it was declared safe in England, our own FDA was less than enthusiastic about it, and most of the people who used it and later delivered severely damaged babies had obtained their supply in Europe.

I think it's certainly possible that the artificial sweeteners are safe. I think it's also not-so-remotely possible that they're not. I do know that obsteticians advise pregnant women against using them. My own endocrinologist said I could use them "if you must, but I'd be just as happy if you didn't, because I don't trust them." He was delighted that plain tea is my beverage of choice. I have no proof that they're harmful, it's just a gut feeling. I don't trust them, either. I wouldn't be surprised to see them pulled from the market within a few years. Besides, they taste awful, like you've had a mouthful of pennies! So, that's just my opinion, and my position on the subject, and fortunately, this is still America (for now, anyway) and my opinion doesn't affect anyone but me.

No charge for any of the above. --Romeena (heehee)

September 21, 2007 - Msg 56100: Im sorry to hear that Ro, I like how PH and hazel phrased it though, Im sure her and Millie are uniting right over us.

Guess what else I've been doing besides making cookies today. I decided to watch all three episodes of TAGS which featured "The Fun Girls". Since she was Fungirl over at the Forum, she must have liked those eps extra special. Just got thru watching "Barney Mends a Broken Heart". The one where Peggys friend, Don (the hungry buzzard) comes over to Peggys and Andy gets jealous. So Barn tries to cheer him up by first introducing him to Lydia (I hate the guitar. I hate to chit-chat.) And then he later introduces Andy to the Fungirls, and Andy gets punched in the eye at the TipTop Cafe.

Well, folks, I have a bit of information, and based on it, I have (as my husband would have said) made a dee-cide. My florist called earlier, still trying to get info on where to send the flowers, and I still didn't know, but did mention to her about Bogart's. Well, she took the bit in her teeth, called Bogart's and talked to someone who told her there is to be no funeral service, as such. However, next Saturday, at the restaurant there will be a "time of remembering" as she put it, and the family will be there to greet people who come in. So - I told her to plan to have the flowers delivered there along about next Friday. It won't be a funeral-y looking spray, but rather a pretty basket of color, that they can just sit on the floor, a table, a counter, wherever they choose. I figured with that much notice, if someone has a different idea or if we get any differing information, we can always change it. Nothing will happen until Thursday or Friday. How does that sound to everyone? --Romeena

September 21, 2007 - Msg 56112: Sounds good to me. If the memorial is to be at Bogarts, then that's the perfect place for the flowers. And that kind of sounds like the type of thing Millie would like, since Bogarts was so much a part of her life.

September 21, 2007 - Msg 56126: Folks, do you have any advise for me on this one? I know that Millie was a huge Waltons fan, she even at one time gave me the link to a message board. I never went there, because I'm not really a fan of the Waltons. Anyhow, ever since yesterday, I have been lurking over there, and they don't appear to know that she has passed away. The archives only go back to June, and she doesn't appear to have posted over there since then (unless she uses a nick name). I did find one reference to her, where someone asked on August 30th "Has anyone heard from Caroline in Virginia?" and another person responded with "I talked to her a few weeks ago and she was very tired, but trying to stay busy", or something to that effect. I looked for an e-mail address of the administrator of the site, and couldn't find one. I'm not really inclinned to go over there and post the news for all to see; when I'm not 100% sure that that was the site that Millie even posted at. Although I think it was. Should I just let it go, or do you think that those folks should be told? I have a feeling that she probably didn't post much there in the last few months; since she had so much going on I think she narrowed her sites down to just a few places. But I know at one time she probably formed friendships over there. What do you think?

September 21, 2007 - Msg 56130: Rev, we're just glad to have you back, for whatever length of time you can manage. Traveling does make it difficult to stay connected. When I was in Destin last month, I'd never have made it to the porch if it hadn't been for my son. He rigged up some sort of connection through his phone. It was shaky, not terribly dependable, and very slow, but better than nothing. I can't imagine a house as expensive as that one was, not having internet connections. We were told that it's owned by some elderly, retired folk who have no clue that the internet is important to other people. Well, they need to get a clue, for that kind of money.

PH, there is no need for you to explain about the collective flowers. You were a good friend to Millie in life, you provided a sounding board for her at Sarah's, and even a token of encouragement in the form of flowers while she lived, and that's more than enough. We all offer support and deal with loss in our own way, and that's good. It would be awful if everyone was doing the exact same thing, all the time. We'd have to stand in line!

My ratatouille/stew turned out rather well. Right tasty, if I do say so myself. There's plenty - anybody in the neighborhood, drop by and have a bowl. I'm gonna miss Millie's pies, though. She sure did have a good hand for baking.

Have a great evening, everyone. --Romeena

September 21, 2007 - Msg 56131: Hazel, I think I found the Walton's forum you are talking about. I searched through their archives and found one posting from June 19, 2007 that has me confused. It states
"I spoke with her the other day and she has a great attitude. She did sound fatiqued from the treatment though. She is still planning on going to California next week and is really looking forward to it. Keeping her in my daily prayers.
I do know that Millie vacationed in the Outer Islands near Virginia in the summer. But I don't ever recall any talk about going to California in June.

This was the church that was closest to Caroline's heart. Her grandfather was the minister there, we were married there and all of our children were christened there.
We are having a celebration of Caroline's life with her family and friends at Bogart's on Saturday, September 29, 2007 from 12:00 pm until 3:00 pm.
I was going to print the archives from the past couple of days from here and the TAGs thread to have there so everyone will know how important Caroline was to you and you were to her. You all helped her through a very tough time and I think she was able to share some things with you that she may not have been able to share with folks in her real life.

September 21, 2007 - Msg 56139: Good evening, all. I saw Steve's message, and am glad to have that guidance. Since the flowers have already been ordered and the florist has made several calls, though of course nothing has been delivered, what would you say to this idea? As Ray mentioned, we could go ahead and send the flowers to Bogart's, and the excess could go as Steve directed, to the Methodist Church. There will be excess, trust me. We've known that all along, and had wondered how to use it. Well, Steve has told us. How does that sound? --Romeena

September 21, 2007 - Msg 56140: Could someone direct me to Sarah's? I went there a couple of times a while back, no one was there at the time, and now I've forgotten the way. I should have left a trail of breadcrumbs. --Romeena

September 21, 2007 - Msg 56141: Stevem thanks for including our porch family in your family. Caroline was very special to each of us and I know we all learned something from knowing her and was blessed many times over.Romenna, you do whatever you feel is best. That plan sounds fine with me. Just home from Friday night football, my sons team (the Vounteer
Falcons) won tonight 19-7. They were pretty exicted as it was a big conference game for them. No injuries on the field tonight!!. JUst wanted to say good night and God Bless. Big Maude

September 21, 2007 - Msg 56143: OK, I went there, and there's a big old warning box, about trusting an applet by somebody named Phillippe something or other. Do I want to trust that? --Romeena

September 21, 2007 - Msg 56144: Well, I tried again, didn't get Phillippe's warning box this time, just got a box that kept repeating something about access denied. I don't think it likes me. I'm going to bed. Maybe I'll try again some other time. --Romeena

September 21, 2007 - Msg 56145: Wow, what a great chat session Mavis, Hazel, BigMaude, and I had over at Sarah's tonight. Much of the discussion was about Millie.
We did have two attemtps who could not log in so we don't know who they were.
Romeena, yes you have to run that application by Phillippe Detournay to enter Sarah's, so go ahead and click on RUN. I do it everytime I go to Sarah's.

September 22, 2007 - Msg 56146: Wow - I missed afeter I went to bed last night. Ireland lost to France in rugby. I watched that on the telly with friends. I came home and got on for a bit but the porch seemed dead, but you all sure got busy!

Kind of neat to see the visitors from the Porch on the TAGS forum site!

Good morning to all

September 22, 2007 - Msg 56147: Im sorry I couldn't make it tonight at Sarah's guys, I was at a movie "Mr. Woodc*ck". It was ok, might get some laughs but it won't leave you with anything most likly. PH and Mavis, I encourage you to post at TAGS forum (Im hab101 there) as well. September 22, 2007 - Msg 56149: Hi! I"m Opiemom on the TAGS forum site. My son had told me about it awhile ago. After Fungirl/Millie died, I read your tributes here. Very moving. She was an amazing woman. I have a c ouple of friends with cancer. When they were diagnosed, they said they felt peace because they had lived life with no regrets. I think Millie lived that way. Very challenging to me as I am about her age. Have I lived life with no regrets of things I should or shouldn't have done or said?

September 22, 2007 - Msg 56150: Well, Opiemom, I guess we all have some regrets. We have discussed this subject here on the porch and I think we came to the decision that we all have regrets, what matters is what you do about them. Sometimes regrets make us change for the better but if they just cause us guilt and pain, that's another story. Welcome to the porch.

September 22, 2007 - Msg 56151: By the way, I tried to get on over at Sarah's last night and got the same message that Ro got. That has never happened before so I don't understand what happened. Sorry I missed the chat, but maybe next time.

LIFT UP YOUR VOICE

Lift up your voice,
In earnest love and prayer;
Thanking God for what you have,
Letting Him know you care.
Thank Him for the sunshine;
Thank Him for the rain;
Thank Him for your pleasure;
And thank Him for your pain.
Thank Him for the good times,
Thank Him for the bad;
Thak Him for just being Him,
Let Him know, for this you're glad.
Then God in all His wisdom,
Will listen to your voice;
And as He answers all your prayers,
You can stand up and rejoice.

Thak Hfor aare friend here.

September 22, 2007 - Msg 56155: It's nice to have visitors from the TAGS forum! Welcome. Millie was special to so many people.
Regrets and guilt. I have a lot of it. I know God forgives me, it's just a matter of forgiving myself...
It appears that several people wanted to chat last night. It would be nice if every week we tried to have as many folks as want to chat all get together. Maybe the Tuesday Night knot-tying club or something. Or maybe Friday nights works best. We'll arrange something, with a few days warning, and give it a try. And yes, I have to hit the "run" button everytime I go there too.
Thank you, Poor Horatio, for helping me with my little project. Your ma should have named you Scooby Doo, you're such an investigator!
Love to all,
Hazel

Fungirl Daphne: "I'm locked up with the Sheriff, I'm locked up with the Sheriff!"

September 22, 2007 - Msg 56156: Good morning, all. Thanks for the reassurance about getting into the chat, I'll try again. Not now, because I know no one is there! Hazel, I love the idea of the Tuesday Night Knot-Tying Club, but maybe it could meet on another night? I'm usually working on Tuesday nights. Not always, but quite often.

I happened to look out my window just now, and spotted a hateful cat with a little squirrel cornered in the nest box. The squirrel couldn't get out, because the cat had the entrance blocked, and was just about to stick a paw into the box when I shot out my back door like a crazy woman, yelling at the cat. You wouldn't believe some of the things I promised to do to him if he ever came back. He about stripped the bark off the tree, he came down so fast, ran through the flowerbed and through a little hole in the fence, just as the rock I chunked at him hit the ground right behind him. I've never thrown a rock at an animal in my life, but all I could see in my mind was that little squirrel dangling in his jaws, and I declare, I believe I would have killed him.

I promise you, if I can corner and catch him, I'll take him for a very, very long ride, and will cross at least three rivers. I'll drop him off in the most affluent community I can find, and wish him well, but I will not allow him to come in this yard and stalk my squirrels. Why on earth don't people keep their animals at home?? Free-roaming cats in the country have their place, are even necessary, but in a community like this, they belong at home, stalking nothing but crickets and feathery cat toys. I know a woman whose cat is forever dragging dead birds, mice and such into the house, in varying stages of decomposition, and who once brought in half of a baby bunny. Then she lets the critter sleep on her bed, after it's been chewing on things like that. Argh!!

Well, I think my heart rate has calmed down enough that I might be able to apply mascara without poking my eye out, so off I go. Picking up some friends, and we're going out to the Eisemann Theater to hear a performance by the Vocal Majority, then to our favorite catfish place to eat waaay too much catfish. It's a buffet, and that's bad news. See you later, friends. --Romeena

September 22, 2007 - Msg 56157: Good Saturday morning folks, hope all is well. PH, the tribute to Millie is lovely. Romeena, your idea is fine with me. Millie will be okay with whatever we do. It is a beautiful Saturday morning. I have been up a while, been to the grocery store, washed 4 loads of clothes and made chocolate brownies. Getting ready to mop the floor. I have a lot on my mind today so I guess I am trying to keep busy. PLease pray for me as this worry bug I have is working double time right now. Supper will be: grilled BBQ boneless pork ribs, cole slaw, scalloped potatoes, green beans and rolls. Fudge brownies for dessert. Prayers and blessings to all of you. Big Maude

Just got off work and decided to "visit" with the folks for a few minutes. What wonderful tributes to Millie. Thanks Steve for checking in with us and letting us grieve with your family.
PH- perfect!
Ro- Thanks for all you do. Millie was a very special person. And for chasing mean, nasty cats THANK YOU!!! (I would have loved to see you chuck that rock at that cat! It probably went on the other side of the fence and died from shock!)
Big Maude- uummm supper sounds delightful after a long day at work. (too many sick folks out there!)
Love and prayers to all! ~New Neighbor

September 22, 2007 - Msg 56159: It was a beautiful day here on the Irish side today - bright and cool.

I love weekends now. When I was posting here before out little church was sometimes just me and my family, but now we have 6-7 families in church nearly every week. I wondered for a while if church planting was for me - but the Lord has been real good all the way through .

September 22, 2007 - Msg 56160: Fixing some Minestone and yeast rolls for dinner. YUM! Very nice day here. We have 5 children ranging in age from 14-21months, so my days are very busy. Today was perfect. Nothing scheduled, just caught up on odd jobs, sang songs with baby and played with puzzles. Listening right now to my daughter blowing bubbles on the front porch with the baby.

September 22, 2007 - Msg 56164: What a great post, Opiemom. I really enjoyed reading about your day with the kids...sounds dreamy.

Romeena, you just about choked me when you said, "...I might be able to apply my mascara without poking my eye out...". Hilarious! Glad you calmed down. I really wonder if that cat will ever come back into your yard or if you scared him into a "CATatonic" state.

Nice to have you posting again, Irishter. Great to hear that your church is growing!

Prayers for you Maude, I know how painful it can be to get bitten by the worry bug. Hang in there.

Very nice poem, TOM.

"Hey" to New Neighbor, it's so good to have you back on the porch again with us.

Hey to Hazel, too. I hope we can all get together to chat soon.

Been a busy day. Finally got rid of the extra critters that were running around here since yesterday. It was nice having Karen's kids for the night but I am tired from being up late. We stayed up watching the Disney movie, Glory Road about the West Texas college team that won the national championship, I forget when. It's a really good movie if you haven't seen it yet. Really good moral, no bad language.

I am expecting my sister to visit any minute with little Emily, who is about a month old now and so sweet! Can't wait to see her and kiss those ample cheeks! Life's funny, isn't it? After having such a terrible loss when my best friend passed away, God gave me a beautiful little neice this summer that I love dearly. It helps, somehow. I am very thankful for her.

Anybody want to join me later for a movie downtown? They are playing a Glenn Ford movie and we can go to the diner after for pie and coffee...

Boo

September 22, 2007 - Msg 56165: Hey SPOT! I didn't see you there. Thanks for being OUR friend. You're awesome.

September 22, 2007 - Msg 56166: Oh, one thing I forgot to mention. I have talked about Karen's oldest daughter who is 20 (Jill). She dropped out of high school and never got her GED. Well, she has been attended GED school is going to take the test next week. Please pray that she passes. She needs to move on and get an education so she can take care of herself and her baby girl. About a month ago, her alcoholic husband tried to choke her but, like so many women with zero self-worth, she didn't leave him. She tells me that once she can make it on her own she will leave. I know that's a long shot but I can hope that maybe someday she will come to her senses and do what she needs to do. She doesn't have her mother to depend on anymore. Thanks for listening. I am concerned for her little daughter and nothing I say seems to make any difference.

Irishster- I am sure glad you found your way back here, and i didnt even have to email you! ha
RO- Is it possible to cut and paste Poor Horatio's tribute over to the photo album site?
That way it wont go into "archive heaven."
Steve- Thank you for informing us on the details. God does indeed work "in the fullness of time." Our prayers continue for you and the kids and the whole family.
I hope this doesnt sound wrong at this time, but in SOME cases, I admit not ALL, sometimes our very diets make us ill. (I am not saying that this applied to Millie in ANY way just to clarify.) I just want to stress it again as we have talked about it in the past. Our bodies need the right things to help get rid of the free radicals that invade it. I know I have talked about the supplements that I take, and I KNOW they really helped me thru the stress of my mom's illness. Stress, in fact, is one of the worst things that downgrades our immune systems. Any boost we can give it is the best thing we can do. For example, I wouldnt put an artificial sweetner in my body if it was the last 'food' on earth! I think the more we get back to natural foods the better for all of us. Yes, I eat fries etc at times, but in moderation. OK, I said enough, probably too much. Please forgive me.
Lord be with us all, please especially bless Millie with your face to face presence and giude us all on this path of life.
God bless,
MDC
