MDC-I'm 47 and when I was a teenager I really loved The Platters. I have a pretty eclectic music collection, with the exception of rap/hip-hop. I still enjoy The Platters, a lot. Your doo wop collection sounds great.

The Platters: "My need is such I pretend too much
I'm lonely but no one can tell"

The Talking Heads: "This ain't no party, this ain't no disco, this ain't no fooling around."

I love 'em both.

July 21, 2008 - Msg 64282: Thanks for the prayers, MDC. Bible study at the rehab was wonderful tonight! We had several new girls that I had not met and a few of the faithful, but they were all very attentive and polite. One new girl was asking about "how to have Jesus in your heart" and Keith did some explaining. Well, during the closing prayer time, we all hold hands and go around in a circle and each person prays if they choose. The new girl prayed and said, "God I believe that Jesus died on the cross for me and I am asking you to forgive me for everything I have done wrong." She also prayed for her enemies during the prayer time. It was interesting to me that Keith's talk with her never included asking to be forgiven but that was what she was led to do anyway. I thought it was great. Her name is Maria and she is adorable. She reminds me of a young Demi Moore. We also have a girl named Kristen who is getting out and turning 18 on Monday. She is terrified of going home and being tempted by drugs again. It just so happens that she lives near me so I am hoping and praying that she will contact me and let me take her to church with me and get her involved with the kids in our youth group. Please pray for Kristen if you would. Thanks!

One more thing, MDC, I forgot to ask you how you order your Whataburger?...I like mine with mustard, all-the-way. Pretty good that way!

Romeena, read your blog intro and am looking forward to reading your future installments!

Congratulations Romeena on your new venture. Now you have a place to vent instead of posting in here.
I have not read any archives yet so I'm out of touch with you folks. I hope things are well. For those who are not, I will say a prayer for you.

July 21, 2008 - Msg 64287: Hey Poor Horatio! When did you tie the knot?? I missed that. Hope you will your issues resolve and you are able to spend more time on the porch, friend. We miss you.

Well, looks like the tropical storm/ potential hurricane is headed for Mexico (I hope). Maybe we will get some rain from it and that would be nice.

I was watching some old episodes of "Night Gallery" on Hulu tonight and saw that Steven Spielburg actually directed some of them. We used to watch Night Gallery faithfully every week because it was mom's favorite. Mom loved her scary TV and inflicted it on us. I did enjoy Night Gallery as a kid.

Well, think I will call it a night. Goodnight Mayberry.

July 22, 2008 - Msg 64289: Good evening, all, and welcome home to Poor Horatio! We've missed you! And I didn't know you had gotten married, either - congratulations! I wasn't aware that Google required you to open an account in order to post a comment on a blog??? I'm new to the whole thing, so there's a lot I don't know, but I post frequently on a friend's blog through the same site (blogspot) and have never been asked to create an account. Very interesting.

Speaking of the blog - I'd like your opinion on something. As most of you know, I visited Mongolia on mission trips on two occasions, and kept a journal both times. I transcribed it and sent it out by email in installments. Some of you received it, as I recall. Well, my church has a team over there right now, so it's all very strong in my mind. To my deep disappointment, I wasn't able to go, due to health concerns, time-off availability, and financial constraints. The trip is very expensive. Anyway, with that in mind, I'm thinking of opening a second blog, and running those old journal installments through it. For those who read them in the original format, it would be old news, but do you think it would be worth doing, for those who haven't read it? My friend who writes the political blog tells me that readers appear out of nowhere, and if the Mongolia journals could cause even one person to realize the value of missions, it would be worth doing. What do you all think?

I enjoyed the ep about Aunt Bee's wig tonight. My favorite scene is when she first appears with the wig on, and Andy's reaction is just hilarious. He's just positively horrified, and when he tells her (speaking of her own hair) that "we'll just fluff that up and go", I think it's so funny! That's just such a "man" comment. And then there's the scene when the minister arrives early and Bee gets trapped in the kitchen. Andy's trying to get the mirror to her, and naturally Opie questions him, so Andy snaps, "You can't have a mirror too clean! Right, Rev---rend?" The minister is bewildered, Opie is clueless, Aunt Bee is in a tizzy and Andy is acting like an idiot. The whole scene is one of those that, in my opinion, pop up often enough to make the color eps worth keeping.

Well, off I go. I think I'll turn in. Be blessed, everyone, --Romeena

Boo, glad you are prepared for ALL things. :) Hope the storm isn't to bad and doesn't mess things up for you guy's to much.

I have been reading some of the archives and it has been interesting to hear differing opinions and ideas concerning our current energy crisis. And although I agree there is a real need to come up with alternative energy sources, I also think the good Lord has blessed us with an abundance of natural resources and blessed us with the means to put them to use. We should do so with prudence and thanksgiving. As time goes on, and energy becomes more expensive I think it will fuel the great minds of the world to greater and greater abilities. I wish it could happen tomorrow. It won't, but I think it will happen one day and I for one hope I can be there to see it. It would be wonderful to tell those in the Mid-East to just sit on there oil. We no longer need it. Things would suddenly change in a big way. I suspect they know that day is coming sooner than later and they are "making hay while the sun is still shining". Anyway, I think it's just plain silly to be sitting on all we have and refuse to drill for it.

Dud, Labs are great dogs. Just be mindful they are somewhat inclined to cannine epilipsy. If that is the case it will usually show up around 18 months to 2 years of age. They have meds that will help control it, but it still hard to watch your pet go through a siezure. Hopefully yours will not have to deal with it but for some reason labs are prone to it.

Good to see you P.H. Prayers for your situation.
And Homemaker, prayers for you and yours. I hope all will work out good for you.

Spot, what's for lunch?

Mavis, good to see you Dear. Glad things are going well.

Well off to work. Me and the Mrs are still praying on what to do with the medication but are feeling lead to give it a try. She will just have to be monitered closely for liver issues. Please keep us in your prayers and thoughts.
Thank you.

July 22, 2008 - Msg 64301: Good Morning Porch Family. Boo - are you still having to batten down the hatches? We had a lightening storm here last night that was better than the July 4th fireworks. Dud - Hopefully MILK DUD will make the jump to the other side and start enjoying Andy. Bailey (my 13 year old) has finally started asking "Can we watch Andy?". It sure does my heart proud. :)

And in reference to the post about noticing things in the episodes, last night I watched an Andy episode where Thelma Lou's "ugly" cousin comes to town and they hook her up with Gomer for the dance. One scene the camera is behind Andy's desk filming and there is a GYNORMOUS space between what we know as the wall behind Andy's desk and his desk. So either Andy's desk was pushed out into the center of the room or the wall was moved because the next scene it shows Andy sitting at his desk and the wall right there behind him.

Hope all is well with everyone. Dud - have fun at the zoo today. Did you and the MILK DUD make it there last week, too?

July 22, 2008 - Msg 64307: Good morning everyone. I hope that you all are doing okay. I haven’t had time but to skim the archives, so I hope I didn’t miss anything important. It’s pretty hot and humid here but supposed to cool down a bit tomorrow. We could use some rain, too.

ROMEENA: Congrats about your blog. I’ll have to check it out. We caught that episode of TAGS yesterday, too (the one where Aunt Bee wears the wig). Actually, I had a funny incident to relate about it to you all today…The Mrs., Nora, and I were watching it and Chad was playing in his room. At one point he came out to do something or something, looks at the television, and matter-of-factly says, “Aunt Bee looks pretty.” Then he goes on about his business. I just thought that was funny.

BOO: I hope that your friend is okay. I’m not doubting what he says, but attacking someone in the way he was attacked sounds premeditated and intentional and not random. Random acts of violence certainly do happen but they typically are swift. In your friends case his attackers were obviously staking him out. If they had shot at him I’d be saying, yep, random act. But blocking him in a public shopping center parking lot and beating in his windows? They obviously weren’t too concerned about getting caught. I’m no detective, but it sounds like they wanted to hurt him (maybe a lot) and scare the heck out of him. It may be a case of mistaken identity but it sure sounds like there’s more to the story somewhere.

Keep safe as Dolly approaches! You are covered in my prayers.

SPOT: The kids are doing great!

HM: Anything to keep you entertained ;).

POOR HORATIO: Great to hear from you. I hope that you find the opportunity to drop in now and again. We’d love to hear from you.

By the way, my grandfather’s pacemaker surgery went well and he is recovering. My dad is traveling down to Georgia by train leaving today. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers.

DUD, ASA, AUH2O, et al.: Uncle! I’ll shut my trap regarding energy. I enjoy discussing things with y’all, though.

It’s funny (ironic, not “ha ha”). I usually find myself in a minority of one here at work when politics, social issues, etc., etc. come up. Here, I’m the practically the screaming conservative compared to my much more liberal colleagues. One the porch, I also usually find myself in a minority of one in such discussions, though as the screaming liberal. Guess a guy just can’t win, huh? I tell you, sometimes it gets pretty lonely being right. Just kidding. Actually, sometimes it does get discouraging always being the odd man out. And I’ve been odd for years.

Talk to ya’ll later.

July 22, 2008 - Msg 64311: Good morning, all. Boo, I think that thing is case-sensitive. Be sure you have the upper/lower case correct. Apparently they've made some changes to procedure on blogspot - I hadn't posted on my friend's site in several weeks, and things are definitely different. Apparently it's an effort to curb some posting that was getting out of hand. People are less likely to swoop in and post unpleasant things if they have to sign in first. Something like that.

Poor Horatio, you are right, and I do remember now. Believe me when I tell you, Bette Davis was right. Old age ain't no place for sissies. I'm getting more and more forgetful. It's really a little scary, as my father had Alzheimer's, and so did his sister. So when I forget something, or repeat myself, just bear with me, okay?

Gosh, Boo, I wonder if that's what happened to Leah? I knew about that trait in labs, but it didn't occur to me at the time. It could certainly explain her sudden and untimely death, but still - I'm not sure how common it is for a dog to die during a seizure. I had a friend whose poodle used to have a seizure almost every day, and it went on for about three years. I suppose it would depend upon the cause, duration and severity of the seizure.

Dud, I don't think I've mentioned it, but I think the name "Miley De'Lab" is just great! Very creative and original. Right up there with "Milk Dud". Good job!

Me-They, no, I think Mavis might have it right. Sometimes even I wonder if California is in the United States, what with their attempted banning of ROTC in colleges; picketing military recruitment offices; and allowing illegal immigrants to live freely in sanctuary cities and turning a blind eye to foreign criminal elements who come over and murder U.S. civilians.
I'm thinking maybe the border fence should surround California as well, keeping them on the other side.

July 22, 2008 - Msg 64319: Hey, Dud. You're pretty close to right with "only Latinos can cut grass in Texas", but not entirely. The commercial lawn services do employ mostly Latinos, but there are a lot of individuals of all colors who have their own little business. My own yard is cared for by Eddie, a friendly and dependable black man of indeterminate age. He has kept my yard mowed and edged now for about eight years, and he does it well. He does about six or eight yards here on my street, and also does my friend's yard in another part of town, at my recommendation. It's possible that I could hire an illegal to do the job for less money, but I'd have to provide the equipment, and Eddie has his own. Besides, Eddie is an American, and I believe in hiring American first. Maybe first, last and always.

Anyway, my point is, there are people other than illegals who will fill local jobs, given the opportunity. It falls to us, the potential employers, to provide the opportunity. As long as we keep hiring illegals, they will keep coming. If we all insist on hiring American, even if it costs a couple of dollars more, we can eventually stop the tide that's crossing the border. The law of supply and demand will take over. If there's no demand, the "supply" will stay home. The notion that illegals work cheaper is a fallacy. I might get my lawn done for a few dollars less, but I'm paying it out in taxes to provide all the services that they're sucking up like sponges. We need to wake up.

Well, I can see I'm going to have trouble separating the porch from the blog. For those of you who might visit the blog, don't be surprised if you see some duplication. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

Howdy porch family.

Spot...the concert sounds like a great time. Some good bands there. Have fun.

AntD....I was just watching that ep last night in the motorhome and didn't catch that blooper. I'll be watching for it now. You must eat a lot of carrots to have eyes like that...hehe

M-T...great news on your grandfather. Still in my prayers.

That's right Mavis....since we're all family here we have to share those lobsters. But we'll have plenty. I'll send a invoice so you'll know if Spot is hiding some of them.

We'll got to go and set up for tonights concert. Prayers for all the porch family. I'll try to check back in later tonight. Remember, it's still time to tell someone that Jesus loves them today.
-REV.

July 22, 2008 - Msg 64322: Hey Rev - Good luck with the concert tonight. Hopefully you'll have a lot of people to get saved tonight. At church this past Sunday, we had 50 teenagers give their life to Christ. It was awesome!!!

July 22, 2008 - Msg 64323: DUD: Delaware is wanting to put up a wind farm on the Eastern Shore and our governor is signing Maryland on as well, so that may happen.

Speraking of lawn workers, I knew a guy (frind of a friend) who employed about 20 at a landscaping business. He had a number of (legal) Hispanic workers and said that whenever given a choice, he'd hire them over white or black men. He admitted it was a generalization, but he said in his expeience they work a lot harder and complain a lot less. He said that you tell a young white or black man to go dig a hole over there you'd get grunts and complaints about the heat and questions why do they have to do it, then as soon as he'd turn his back they'd by under a tree taking a break or kicking off early. Ask a Hispanic to do it, and they'd pick up a shovel and the next time you see or hear from them it'd be done. He said that as a rule, his Hispanic employees ended up making much better wages than others because they stuck with the job, showed up every day, and put in a full days work. Most white or black kids were gone after a few months of hard work. Of course, theat was just his experience.

ANT D: We use moulage in the sense Barney did in that episode when he said, "I didn't want to make a whole moulage out of it."

See y'all tomorrow.

July 22, 2008 - Msg 64324: Afternoon Y'all! Hey Spot, I'm jealous of you getting to see those great bands!! I saw Marshall Tucker Band a few years back- they were pretty good. Sure wish I'd gotten the chance to see them back in the day (back when they had Toy Caldwell). I saw Ronnie Van Zant with Lynyrd Skynyrd back in the 70's. Three months later,he was gone. I like Johnny & Donnie and the Atlanta Rhythm Section. Funny, whenever I hear one of their songs (AR Section),I always think of you,Spot! And Gordon Lightfoot? I think of Asa, 'cause I know he likes his music. Anyway, you enjoy yourself Spot, and don't fall off of those platform shoes! Are ya gonna wear bellbottoms too? Ha!
Boo, you stay safe. CAT 1 storms can turn out to be nasty lil' devils,as I'm sure you know.

I go back for a 6 month follow-up mammogram in the morning,so if y'all would, keep a good thought and a prayer for me. Hopefully, everything will be fine,as it was last time. I can't say though that I'm not a little bit concerned. I have a friend that just found out she has breast cancer and her mammogram last year was fine. How things changed on her in a year is unreal. She has to have a double mastectomy and the cancer has spread into her lymph nodes. She is only 42 and has two young girls. Please remember Lisa in your prayers. She seems to have quite a battle ahead of her.
I'll see y'all later.

July 22, 2008 - Msg 64325: Afternoon Porch,
I hope all are well. If for some reason or another, usually time, please email me if something is going on at brysonwg(at)aol(dot)com. I want to keep up with everyone, but things here have been crazy, as usual. I feel like my grandmother constantly sayin' "if it ain't one thang it's another". We are finalizing papers to get custody of Nick. We're praying that Deani will sign them and get it over with for once and for all since he is of age to choose. As soon as she signs then she gets to see Nick, and I think that would be good for everyone. BTW, Nick has calmed quite a bit though he's still high strung and annoying. I have had some Otis tendencies this summer, just joking!
Boo- I'm so glad that your rehab group is going well! Isn't Keith the house of your best friend who is with the Lord? Y'all be careful now this hurricane headed toward ya.
MDC- I love Doo Wop. I watch the Doo Wop specials on PBS whenever they're on. I love The Imperials I think their name was. They sang the ding dong song. Is it hot enough out there?
Spot- How's your garden with this nasty drought? Have fun at the concert. Bring lots of cold water with ya!
Me-They- Glad your grandpa is showing some improvement. Your Dad's going by train? Really? I've never travelled by train except for a short stint to see Thomas the Tank Engine when Bryson was 3. Oh my, what I wouldn't give for Thomas over Spongebob!
Sterling- I had no idea CA was trying to band ROTC?! How idiotic! How's Kai?
Dud- I have been doing lots of research on wind power. It may work, but it would be so expensive to start.
Asa & Hazel-My least favorite Floyd episode is with the pen pal lady. I just have a hard time with Floyd being deceptive at all.
Hazel- Did you grow any container plants this year?
Ant-D- I'm from Atlanta. Nice to see another fellow Georgian. I love Dairy Queen. Ours nearby closed for rennovations 1 year ago, so I don't know when they'll open up. When I was growing up in Ky our Saturday night's were at the Dairy Queen (after Hee Haw of course).
Rev- Where are ya at?
Hey to everyone I missed. Y'all have a wonderful Mayberry Day!
Blessings to you and yours,
~Lucy

Ant D, yes as MeThey says above, in the episode about the stolen cows, the "interloping" detective asks Barney if he made a moulage and that's when Barney says, "No, we didnt want to make a whole moulage out of it."
See, we have all seen every episode about a kazillion times, so it is just all part of our language! ha
Someday YOU TOO will be like the rest of us Stepford tags fans! haha

July 22, 2008 - Msg 64329: Well, Me-They, most of what you say makes good sense to me. Don't know what that says about me but I guess I don't care. Liberal or Conservative?...some of both, I guess.

Ro, I tried typing the password every way imaginable, and nothing worked, darn it.

AntD, I had to smile when you mentioned Dairy Queen. It's not my favorite but there is one in every town in Texas! The only place I have not seen one is in the Big Bend area of Texas, which is so desolate that you can't find much of anything out there. We don't seem to ever eat at Dairy Queen, we are more Sonic and Whataburger types. Do you have Whataburger? By the way, WOW about the 50 teens at your church. Were you having a special speaker or something?

Thanks, Possum, I'll stay safe...

Better go finish putting away the groceries...I was just taking a little break. It is hotter than blazes out there today! No clouds in sight yet.

July 22, 2008 - Msg 64331: Hey there Lucy, you snuck in on me. I am assuming you were asking if Keith was the husband of my best friend who passed away...no, he is a good friend whose wife passed away from a lung disease over a year ago. We prayed for him and his wife Linda here on the porch from time to time during her illness. Keith is doing very well now. Anyway, sorry your summer has been so hectic and hope things get easier soon. Don't stay gone so long....

July 22, 2008 - Msg 64332: Hey Boo: We have two Sonics right here in town. I enjoy visiting both of them weekly. Love their burgers; I think it's their toasty buns I like so much abou their burgers. But again, their Peanut Butter Fudge Milkshake is the BOMB! I try and drink it all up before I get home so I don't have to share any with anyone. Yep, I'm greedy when it comes to chocolate. :) BTW, my daughter Bailey's nickname is Boo. I call her Boo more than I call her Bailey.

Hey Lucy: I agree; it sure is nice to see a neighbor down the road on here. I'm new to the porch but all of the neighbors here on the porch have sure made me feel quite at home.

MDC: I swear I've probably seen almost every Andy episode a hundred times but each time when one comes on, I tell my husband, "This must be a new one cause I ain't seen this one before." He just looks at me with that look of "Poor girl. Doesn't she know there hasn't been a new Andy episode in 40 years?" I do know that but I like to make him feel like he's the smarter of the two of us. :) I had to convert him over to Andy anyway after we got married. He thought it was funny once when he poked fun of Andy and Barney but I wasn't laughing; I was just leering at him. He realized then how serious I was about Andy and Barney and he's never poked fun anymore. :)

Ant D- I think most of us here do think that they had Andy overdo the accent in season 1, so I DO make fun of that a little bit, sorry.
But that is very cool about the 50 accepting Jesus! Praise God!
We had a DQ discussion a while back and most had bad experiences there. but mine are always good. I love the burger with the mushrooms!
BOO- I get my whatabuger as a double with bacon, and everything, even jalapeno. (but maybe I'll hold the jalapeno for a while as I'm not real fond of Sal Menela. ha) How does it look regarding Dolly?
I only had homemade ice cream once, but we used to have "Watermelon Busts" sponsored by Kiwanis in a park near our home. This is when it was about 2 cents a pound. They'd slice a melon long ways in quarters. We'd bury our little faces in it only to come up for air! good times! Dy-no-mite good stuff!
As andy would say:I appreciate it, and good night!
Hey to MAVIS, PH and others!!

AUH20- funny stuff about floyd. I love him in the manicurist ep when all the other men cut out of the barbershop, leaving only him and andy, and floyd gets all flustered! ha

MDC & Hazel-Ya know, the subtleness or dryness in the way Howard McNear delivered a line, even after his stroke. He was one funny guy. I loved how his character evolved over the years.

Barney: "Floyd's right! One of your lobes is longer than the other!"

July 22, 2008 - Msg 64341: What's a Cold Stone? Is that anything like the Marble Slab ice cream stores?

Boo, the only suggestion I can offer is to just start over, with a different name and password. I'm still sort of feeling my way along too. One thing I've noticed, the layout and procedures on my sites seem to be different than my friend's, even though we're both on blogspot.com. She's been doing this for some time now, so I guess I need to see if she can clue me in. By "layout", I don't mean the template that the blog is displayed in - that's a matter of choice. I'm talking about the built-in layout - the arrangement of questions and sign-ins. I understand about the warped and twisted letters that you must identify and repeat - that's to keep some idiot from posting on everyone's blog. If each one requires a different entry verification, they'd soon get tired. They can't do it on a mass basis.

I went ahead and opened the second blog, for the purpose of running the Mongolia journals through it. If anyone is interested, just click on "My Profile" and it will show both blogs.

Welcome back home, Lucy. Long time no see. I'm glad things are a little better with Nick - I imagine they'll continue to improve as he matures and begins to see the world from a different angle. He's about old enough now to begin to realize that he's not the center of the universe, and to start seeing some of the ways you've tried to help him.

Well, TAGS is on, guess I'd better return to the TV. Starr is looking for a lap too, so it will be good use of my time. (heehee) --Romeena

July 22, 2008 - Msg 64342: We have a Dairy Queen here, AntD, though we don't go there much, mostly because the kids they hire are usually rude or indifferent(well, that and I prefer our Culver's custard anyway). I think I mentioned it here years before, but I actually started to think that DQ had a manual for new employees on how to be rude, because the one we went to when we lived in Indiana was like that too. I remember going through the drive-thru and the kid at the other end greets us with "What do you want?"
What do I want? How about a "may I help you?" for starters.
My memories of DQ aren't all bad though. I remember during summers of long ago, when my brothers and I used to head over from the pool to the DQ(since it was near it) and get a cone or a Mister Misty. Those were good on a hot summer day.

I love ColdStone also, auh2o. We don't have one in our town, but there is one at a nearby town that we go shopping in quite often.
And yes, I think they are similar, Romeena. They do mix your order on a marble counter at least. I love getting chocolate with the real marshmallows they mix in. Mmmmm.
The only thing I dislike Coldstone for is how they try to get you to order by having their sizes labled "Like it"(same as small); "Love it"(same as medium); or "Gotta have it"(same as large).
I always order the normal way, and they seem to know what size I want when I order a "medium", so no harm done.
They also break into song every once in a while, which is kinda stupid if you ask me. I come there for ice cream, not a show. :)
