Morning Porch

What beautiful day out there.

Asa-Nothing in the "news" surprises me anymore, we have nit wits like Keith Oberman, Rosie O'donnell, and any other celebrity, with an opinion, pushing news cycles on any given day. What ever ridiculous thought that pops into their head pops out their mouth, and whala you have news. You are right about Obama, if he wants to win this thing he had better quit talking for a few weeks. Oh yeah, I heard that Johnny Cash was signing about Dick Cheney when he sang, "... I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die." Bet ya didn't know that one buddy.

Hey bevee, hope all is well with you.

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65191: Auh2o, Haha, I didn't know that song was about Cheney. Keith Oberman, what a joke. I think he has.... never mind. I won't go there.

Hey Dud, I don't think the Rev knew that post was from you. He probably thought it was a post and run cause you forgot to put your name on it. Y'all hang around here. The election will be over soon and then we can discuss more important things, like who's gonna be President this year of the Mayberry Knot Tying Club. You know we still meet every Wednesday night. I would like to nominate Possum for it this year. I think anyone who can tie knots without thumbs deserves such honors.

Glad you got some rest Romeena. I went to Preachin yesterday and managed to stay upright, although it wasn't easy there at times.

Prayers continue for your situation there Homemaker. Hope you get a new job soon like.

N.N. You like those full moons do you? Ha, I'll leave it at that.

Hope you all have a great Monday.

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65192: Heehee...you people are so funny. I didn't have much trouble staying awake at preachin'. Several of the girls from the rehab were brought to our church for services and the two that I requested prayer for were baptized (Maya and Ashley). Thank you for your prayers! It was just wonderful. Keith got to baptize them and the girls even sang a song that Maya had written. It was beautiful and the church even gave them a standing ovation. I wish you all could have been there. You would have been so blessed to see some of the results of your prayers. One of the boys that we take to church (Nathan) was also baptized and his parents actually came for the first time since the boys have been attending (which amounts to almost 3 years). They were very uncomfortable, sat on the back row and scrammed as soon as church was over, but at least they were there. We took Nathan out to eat after church and wanted them to come as well, but they didn't want to. It's a difficult situation because those boys (who are now 14 and 16) don't get any support at home. They are really good kids and I wish things were different for them. At least they have a church family that loves them.

Boy, I have laundry out the wazoo, so I had better HEAD ON out back to get caught up...

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65195: Good morning everyone. It was a beautiful weekend here. Makes me real sorry that Monday has rolled around. The only bright spot this morning is catching up with you folks.

Hope you’re rested this morning, ROMEENA. We went to preachin’ at a different church yesterday (where the kids go to school). The sermon was fine, but I still can’t get with the music. I’m just not used to getting jiggy at church.

AUH2O: Grease is the word.

Did you or ASA catch the Saddleback Citizens’ Forum the other night? I thought this format was the best I have ever seen for this kind of thing. Debates have become a joke. But this way of directly questioning each candidate while the other is in a “cone of silence” really was telling. The candidates really had to stick it out there and take a stand, or look evasive. I thought McCain did a great job. I didn’t catch all of Obama’s but I have seen clips of most of what I missed. He really bungled the abortion question. I thought Rick Warren’s questions were pretty spot-on, too. All-in-all, it was probably the best and most informative candidate forum I have watched in recent memory, which makes me surprised that the candidates actually agreed to do it.

Sorry, STERLING, I’m firmly in the butter camp as well. But to each his own. I, for one, will not shun you ;).

DUD: I’m sure that you have a perfectly reasonable answer to all of my objections about the certificate. I’ll even go so far as to concede the argument. Nevertheless, until we have some sort of official verification of the fact to tack up on the bulletin board, I’m filling it away. I have to think with Republicans in charge of the Justice Department, FBI, and CIA, not to mention all executive civil servants answering to a Republican president, I have to believe that if this was really smoke the fire would be quickly uncovered. If there was a even a remote chance that the birth certificate was phony, you’d think that the RNC, et al., would have rooted it out. In fact, no official official is giving the possibility any credence. So, for me, that’s that. But you never know, I suppose; official verification may come in the afternoon mail. Then, and only then, will I change the bulletin board.

BOO: Here comes my shorts!

I’ll stop back and visit again later.

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65201: Hello Everyone:

I am glad to know there is a bulletin board Me-They....I hope you changed it after I mentioned on the post about Edward's affair that was being reported on Fox News..It was commented on that it was trashy talk and shouldn't be discussed on The Porch by some. He confessed and made the Main Stream Media, so I guess that was taken off the board. Fox News is reporting on the Fake Birth Certification Document (Plausible Deniability) which his campaign has posted on his Web-site as a birth certificate, (It is not a birth certificate copy that any nit-wit can obtain from the state)...Please do not put me in the category of a conspiracy nut..I do not appreciate it...I have researched this matter more than you have and do not be a Sheeple to the Main Stream Media...Is Obama ashamed that he is the child of a single mother and his parents never got married and his auto biography is wrong???....We know his father was married to another woman when he fathered Obama..He wasn't divorced...This man has problems with the truth and there is such a thing as keeping your powder dry....The Republicans will have all sort of ammo to discredit this guy...Everyone on this porch knows he should not be President for other reasons that you have stated. You are not the Sheeples out there that take what the MSN press spoonfeed you...Everyone take care and I will check with ya'll out after the election...I don't feel too welcome on the porch...People make comments after I get on a political point that they are glad that the discussion has turned away from politics...If I stay away from the topic and others give comments..No one ever comments that they are tired of it..It must be me and not ya'll, but it maybe why other people have left the porch and others do not join..Please think about this and what you want for the future of The Porch. There is a big tent philosophy and a safe, stay the same, just us mentality...ya'll have figured it out and I have come to the conclusion that some of you think I am an interloper...ROMEENA and others talk about there pets and I enjoy their observations and Boo was so inspirational with the things that went on in the church this weekend...I don't say "Well I glad that the discussion has got away from such and such"...but it happens after I comment too many times for me not to beleive that I am a distraction on The Porch. Some will say, Thank God he is gone...Others may say something else....I enjoyed it ....

I'll be glad when this election is over (I hope, anyway).

Here is a funny joke I read that might lighten the mood here on the porch: Two elderly ladies were taking a drive through town...(picture them hunkered down, barely able to see over the dashboard). The lady in the passenger side thought that the driver, Mildred, drove through a red light...'maybe it was just my imagination', she thought to her self, and then it happened again. 'That's not my imagination this time!', she thought. "Mildred," she said, "are you aware that you just ran two red lights? You could have killed us?"....to which Mildred, turned to her bewildered and said...."Oh no! Am I driving?!"

Gonna have some lunch now.

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65205: Dud,if it's any consolation,I agree with you (Msg 65201) about your comments concerning this porch. Whenever someone new joins, everyone chimes in, "Welcome to the porch, sit and rock a spell, yada, yada, yada." However, when the dust settles (and that doesn't take very long!), the same few people that have been here forever, take right up where they left off, and the new people don't feel welcome at all. I'm sure, Dud, as you said, that is why some newcomers don't return and others don't join at all. Not saying that all of the regulars are that way, because they're not. But by the same token, some of them are. Kinda like a high school click...
A Keen Observer

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65206: DUD: Please don't get the wrong idea. I may not alweays agree with you, but I don't think you are a nut and enjoy conversing with you. It's funny that you shoudl think you are the "odd man out." That's frequently my place at the table in regards to politics here on the porch. So, at teh risjk of offending, get off my lap ;). Just kidding. It's true some friends here enjoy the political banter less than you and I. But they area pretty longsuffering type and don't hold grudges. Heck, they've put up with my moulage making for several years.

Also, FYI, the bulletin board thing is just a nod to the show; remember the episode where Barney and Andy heard from the radio that a criminal had been captured but Barney refused to take down his wanted poster off the buletin board because he hadn't gotten "official verification?" It's the ep where he utters his famous line, "Who's been merssin' up the bulletin board?"

And, in the interest of self-defense, I will note that I posted this the day Edwards admitted to the affair: "August 08, 2008 - Msg 64932: Well it looks as though the Edwards rumors are official. We can go ahead and tack them up on the bulletin board. Such despicable behavior. By teh bad judgment he exhibited with this, seems we dodged a bullet, so to speak. Prayers for his wife and family. Me-They"

The long of it is this, DUD: You are welcome here, and I, for one, hope you stick around. I apologize if it has appeared that I am unfriendly and I mean you no ill will. I know that the rest of the folks here are kind people and certainly don't either. (Hey, I'm the worst of the lot.) So pull up a chair and set. I'll try to act like somebody. August 18, 2008 - Msg 65207: Dear Keen Observer: Thanks for commenting that we do welcome newcomers. You know, the reality is we all were newcomers here at one time. I agree sometimes our conversations just keep on going, but we certainly encourage anyone to chime right on in. After all, some people here have been posted frequently for years, and we've gotten a little deeper than "how's the weather?" Some newcomers jump right in and hang on, as Briscoe would say. Others act more like "the stranger in town."

A Keen Observer-Not really sure what you're looking for but a High-School clique? Really? If you noticed there are numerous topics going at once, food, TAGS, politics, animals, weather/yards, and so on. I find it hard to believe you couldn't join the conversations. I doubt that you noticed but I seldom, if ever, join in the "chats" concerning animals. I don't own one, never have, probably never will. That's not to say I don't like animals (God knows I love the polar bears) just ...well, I got nothing to add, kinda like your last post. I suggest you take awhile grow up a bit, heck, maybe even get a library card and stop back when you got something intelligent to say.

KEEN OBSERVER: Are you calling me a communist? Socialist, maybe, but no communist!

I'm sorry you have such a low opinion of me. You've been posting "drive-by" messages for a few weeks now. Even though you didn't identify yourself, I figured by your TAGS quotes that you were just a fan dropping by to check us out.

As far as not taking responsibility for anything, I point out that in my earlier post I explained myself to DUD, apologized to him, and let him know I'd try to act like somebody in the future. I believe that is basically the definition of "taking responsibility."

You know, I really hate it when you're obtuse.

Hey Keen Observer, are you someone we know or are you posting for the first time, just curious? Appreciate your observations but can't say I agree on all points. I thought we were pretty friendly around here. Where is Romeena? She usually has something wise to say at times like these?

Don't let it get to you, Me-They. You are a kind and good soul and I like it when you share your opinions....even when you hang your head out the winder. Heck, I like it when everyone shares their opinions. Just think about what a porch like this would be like in Mayberry...people chatting and sharing opinions about a variety of topics; sometimes agreeing to disagree, sometimes getting a bit huffy and opinionated at times, but always remaining friends. It's like that 'ol Texas boy, Dr. Phil says, "Do you wanna be right or do ya wanna be happy?" Also remember that the bible teaches that we should be kind, tender-hearted towards one another and should "esteem others higher than ourselves". Let the greatest among us be the servant of all. "The wisdom from above is first gentle, peaceable and easily entreated".

Boo

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65215: Keen Observer,Sure hope I ain't thought to be cliqueish. I have always detested them. I suspect there is some truth to your post though, sad to say. We get folks who join up, but don't stick around long and we never hear from them again. I have often wondered if it's because they felt umwelcome, or didn't like some of the topics of discussion going on. Heck, I even get tired of it at times and have voiced it here before. And sadly I do know of a few folks who have left here because of the religious and political topics that take place. It seems like this whole thing comes up every few months, but as of late is happening a little more frequently. I suspect because the election is getting closer and more folks are concerned about our Country, there is just more discusion about it than usual.
But I appreciate your comments and will try to do better in making folks feel more welcome. Please do join in and post with us. I find the more a person opens up and posts here, usually the more responses they get in return.

And I don't think you would, either. Think about it a minute. See, you have the benefit of knowing me, at least a little. I have no idea who you are or what you mean by what you said. The "who's been messing with the bulletinboard" line is in the ep "Barney's Replacement" where the guy is sent from Raliegh to get some "practical experience" in law enforcement.
Now, my take on the porch is this: 4 years or so ago, i came to this website as i was trying to get more info about Andy Griffith, since i love the show. While here, I clicked on "the Front Porch" and here ya all were. After observing for a while, I hopped right in and have been on the ride ever since. I realize that we will never solve the world's problems, But i dont see that as it's purpose A-TALL, but rather it is just a place to "shoot the breeze", & make a few comments. I really don't care what is talked about as long as there are no personal attacks, bigotry, and the like. That apparently happened at Miss Crump's and so 'Floyd'took some drastic measures to stop it. I don't want to see that happen here, so when things start to turn that way, I usually try to chime in to help curb it so that no one gets compelled to contact the site administrator, our 'Floyd'.
Nothing is written anywhere that says that we HAVE to take a Mayberry name etc., it is just a place to 'shoot the breeze', not 'pass the gas'! haha
That said, my lunchtime is over. Sorry.
God bless,

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65226: Very good point, MDC...I would hate for things to get to that point. I enjoy being able to discuss any topic with my friends here and have learned much in that process and darn it, I'm friendly. I have never tried to make anyone feel unwelcomed here and I am not aware that anyone else has, either. Like MDC said, everyone starts out being the new kid on the block. As to why some folks leave, it is speculation the think that they left because they were offended. Maybe folks are just too busy these days. To tell you the truth, if I were not so close to my friends here, I would have stopped coming back when Millie was with us. I went through a difficult time watching the suffering she endured and wanted to run. She and I had so much in common..we were the same age, both had daughters the same age, sons named Sean and our husbands even shared the same occupation, we both grew up in the Methodist church and one of my good friends even had Millie's real name (first and last). What she was going through hit very close to home and it was hard for me, but I loved her and wanted to be here for her so I stayed, as did so many of you wonderful people here on the porch. I saw such an incredible outpouring of love, prayers and support for Dear Millie that it was an absolute inspiration. That is the sort of folks that make up this porch, and those are my friends, who I know will be here for me in my tough time. I love them with my heart and soul and I am having a hard time hearing someone put them down for not being friendly or welcoming enough. They don't deserve it. The way I see it, the more the merrier. None of us can have too many friends, so if you care to stay and be a part of that, we welcome you, but please have some respect. This is from the heart...

Ya know, though Dud, sometimes I get the feeling you're looking for an argument. M-T can't post anything and you're on him like ugly on an ape. I mean you and your pride of the South no ill intent. You're not gonna believe this but years go by before the Mason–Dixon Line even pops into my thoughts. I hope you stick around Dud, I really do. But relax, we're friends here. As for tracking you down, well, I wouldn't be able to find my way back to the Porch if I didn't have it book marked. I enjoy your references to the things in your region. So, I hope you stick around.

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65235: Well, here goes. I've tried to just read and keep my mouth shut, but I didn't quite make it. Dud, it's not my wish to offend you, but as I've read and re-read posts, recent ones and some not so recent, one thing becomes clear. You have a hard time stating an opinion without it sounding like an edict from on high. You always come off as having some knowledge or privileged information that the rest of us know nothing of. Maybe you do. I'm quite sure you know more about oil and drilling and energy procurement than I do. However, I really don't care to be talked down to, or lectured on the subject, or any other subject, for that matter. You have presented yourself as an authority on the Obama birth certificate question, or at least as one who knows more than the rest of us (quote): "I have researched this matter more than you have". How do you know that? You don't know what research others may have done. We all have computers, and presumably we can read. Dud, you may very well be much better informed, more experienced and more knowledgeable than all of us put together, but you would do well to present yourself a little more humbly, and not treat us all as if we know nothing, and you're going to enlighten us. Even a first-grader appreciates being treated with respect. I think you're not aware that you come off that way, but I hope you'll accept this as it's intended - an attempt to explain the reception you feel you've been given.

Keen Observer, I'm not sure what to make of you. Your earlier, unsigned posts were inocuous enough - "Gomer says hey" and "Hey to Gomer" and the like. Now, all of a sudden, we get "Whenever someone new joins, everyone chimes in, "Welcome to the porch, sit and rock a spell, yada, yada, yada." However, when the dust settles (and that doesn't take very long!), the same few people that have been here forever, take right up where they left off, and the new people don't feel welcome at all. I'm sure, Dud, as you said, that is why some newcomers don't return and others don't join at all. Not saying that all of the regulars are that way, because they're not. But by the same token, some of them are. Kinda like a high school click... " Sooo - what did you expect? Were you expecting us to ask you questions and try to find out more about you? Perhaps we figured you'd share if you felt like it. Of course we returned to our old conversations, but if you had introduced another topic, we'd have picked up on that, too. Instead, the first thing out of your mouth besides a TAGS quote was a criticism.

It's really not all that complicated. We are a group of people of long-standing association, we have been through thick and thin together. These folks rescued me emotionally when my husband died, and there have been many other occasions - some of them were outlined by our dear Possum in #65227. Now with that said, hear this. If you want to come here and join us, come on in. When you have something you want to discuss, throw it out there. If it's peaceable, we'll likely talk your ear off. If it's divisive or inflammatory, or presented as though from God's mouth to our ears, you might get a cold reception. If you think you're going to come here and change us, or correct us, think again. We've survived some pretty difficult times, and we're still together.

It's true some of our folks have moved on and don't come around anymore. As was said earlier, there can be many reasons for that. People's lives and their circumstances change. Some people just get tired of the game. Others may have gotten offended, though I hope not. If so, and if they're reading this, please come on back and let bygones be bygones. We did wander into some treacherous water a while back, on the subject of religion, and I was as guilty as anyone. I apologized, so did others.

Well, I hope I've presented a close expression of the feelings of the majority of the folks on this porch. If not, speak up - it's an open forum. For those who are not happy with us right now, I can only say - if you feel you'd be happier elsewhere, then please go there. We want you to be happy. We want to be happy too, and we love our little porch, so please don't come in here trying to change us to suit yourself. Not everyone has to be on this porch - it's not like it's the only conversational forum in town.

Now can we all play nice and get along? --Romeena

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65236: Dud, that sounds mighty like a threat to me. And why on God's green earth would any of us have the slightest interest in following your internet trail? Believe it or not, I will leave this keyboard and go watch TAGS, and it will not even enter my mind to wonder where you went on the internet. Good grief! --Romeena

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65237: Yep,it sure does sound like a threat, doesn't it,Romeena? Count me in as another person who is not the least bit interested in following Dud,or anybody else online. August 18, 2008 - Msg 65246: I think it's the fallout. It's affecting our milk.
Seriously Dud, I doub't any one from here is prying into your business. We all have lives and families and jobs to tend to. I will echo auh2o's comments and hope you stick around. I have enjoyed many of your posts and have stated so several times with no response back from you. I have no ill will towards you, as does anyone here I do believe. I know Me They can come off sounding somewhat all knowing and pious (hee hee even he has admitted such) at times, but his opinion is just that. His opinion. No better or worse than anyone elses. But you do seem to take it way more serious than you should. Don't get all riled up. This place is supposed to be a refuge from the REAL problems of life. We all come from different walks of life, have had different life experiences and have differing ideas and thoughts of dealing with life. What a blessing we live in a Country where we can differ and still be friends and enjoy fellowship.
Stick around and don't take things here so serious. Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured.
Am I getting through to you fellow? (just a TAGS quote to lighten the moment)

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65251: Asa: You have gotten through to me...But there is someone (maybe not on the porch) and I not saying anyone who is prying into my life...I don't care, I have nothing to hide...bring it on..it is just irritating.. August 18, 2008 - Msg 65253: Asa here is another hunk of meatloaf.."splat"..heavy on the tomato sauce!..hey my friend Hazel...possum and I have been eating for ever and a day!....slow here at work...SPOT

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65254: KO, I'd really like to just walk away from this whole silly discussion, but my curiosity is aroused. Just what is threatening about "If you think you're going to come here and change us, or correct us, think again."? No mention of consequences, "or else's" or anything of the sort. Just a statement of fact - we don't plan to change to suit you. Get over it. It's that simple.

Dud, Asa and some others have gone waaaay out of their way to be nice to you, and I'd like to do the same, but quite honestly, I'm smelling a great big rat. Once again, why on earth would anyone be interested in chasing you down on the internet? In the first place, I seriously doubt any of us would know how to track you on the net. Track your entries here on the porch - yes, any one of us with a "View" option at the top of their screen can do that, but that's about it. Not only do we not care where you go, but we couldn't track you if we wanted to. You have said goodbye now until I've lost count, but then you pop up again. As soon as the pot stops bubbling, you stir it up. Go or stay, suit yourself, but for pete's sake, cut out these childish games. Now, is that plain enough? --Romeena

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65255:

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65260: Hey folks!
did anyone see the news last night.
Another funny zoo story, this one in australia!
A gorilla took a zookeepers flashlight away from him and then beat him to death with it when he entered the cage to get it back!
According to the news story his assistant arrived to find his co-workers skull literally splattered all over the cage.
The thing is that now these blokes want to put the big beast down.
I dont think that right.its an ape,and was only doing what it thought best.
We people act worse than that..why just two nights ago there was a news story about a father who sodomized his daughter for 6 months before she told her teachers about it and they removed the guy from the home.
So its funny when an ape caves in some blighters skull with a torch!

August 18, 2008 - Msg 65274: What do you yanks think about all this bigfoot dung on the telly?
why is it all the photos of the beast are blurred and dark.
Were a bigfoot to exist surely man would have run into it before this, right.
someone would have fond a dead one somewhere.
to my mind this all smells of dung and money.
a bunch of slow farmers and red neck trash figuring they might make a quick run at your wallet while you jaw is hanging open over the ape.
anyone here believe in this beast?
Loch Ness monster is bull too.
