August 29, 2008 - Msg 65697: Wow, really Sterling? Bruce had mentioned that to me before. Guess I had better pay attention. You know, she always choosed the disney stuff over PBS, but when I have made her watch something else she liked it. She really loves Wishbone, but it not on very often. I tried introducing her to Mr Rogers and that went over like a lead balloon, but if I limit her choices, she might seem more attractive! ha Thanks for the advice!

August 29, 2008 - Msg 65700: Well SPOT my friend, I have a feeling poor possum has one pooped putootie after taking care of Laci. We may not hear from her until she recovers! Sorry you have to be at work all night on Friday. I will try to check in from time to time until bedtime.

I need some more advice from you very wise porch friends...I have noticed over the past year or so, that my dear husband's driving is getting bad. I thought maybe it was because he needed new glasses but he got them and things have not improved. When we were running around in town today, he scared me on 3 different occasions by turning in front of other cars. He also tailgates. I want to talk to him about it and tell him that he has got to change but he is very defensive about his driving (no pun inteded). I know it's a pride issue and my honey seems to be a bit on the arrogant side at times. How do I get through to him without causing an argument? I am really concerned about him, especially when the kids are in the car with him. All advice welcomed. I think that a big part of his problem is that he is so stressed all the time and has not patience and it shows in his driving. It is always "someone else's fault" because they were driving too fast, etc. He is just in high gear all the time and still forgets to take his blood pressure medicine if I don't put it in his hand every night.

Wish I could be more helpful.
Is it possible his eyes are worse than at first thought, and he just doesn't want to come to grips with deteriorating eyesight, and that's why he gets so defensive about it?(I like your pun, by the way)

August 30, 2008 - Msg 65706: I'm right here, SPOT. I got interested in a movie and then had to clean up the kitchen. I have never watched the 70s show. I just finished that old movie with Morgan Freeman called "Lean On Me". Pretty good story, I guess. The bad language was mostly bleeped out by USA channel, which was a plus. Sounds like Miss Sherry has plenty to do. I know a little boy named Caden and everyone calls him Cade. He is 8 and Erin has a big crush on him. He is all boy and doesn't want much to do with Erin unless they are playing war or something masculine. Of all the girls he knows, though, Erin is the one he plays best with because she is such a tomboy. Hey, speaking of My Cousin Vinny, don't you just love the part when the judge (Herman Munster) says, "What's a yout?"...kills me.

Yes, it is a sticky situation, Sterling. Bruce is not someone I can just unload on because his is pretty SENSITIVE!...kinda like Barney. I am hoping for the opportunity to talk to him about it this weekend but should probably wait until the end of the weekend.

Think I will try to get some sleep. Have to be up early tomorrow. Hope you have a good night, SPOT.

I am liking this Sarah Palin more and more. Not only is she a social conservative and a family woman, but she is tough to boot.
I saw a video where she was shooting what I think was an M16 automatic rifle. Any woman who knows how to shoot an assault rifle is all right by me, and she'll get my vote. Along with that other guy, whatshisname... McCain. ;)

Hopefully after the new year when we call the White House we will be saying, "Hello, Sarah?!" :)

August 30, 2008 - Msg 65709: Good evening, or should I say good morning? I just got home, have been out at my son's home all evening. He picked up Babe's fried chicken and brought it home (sorry, Daphne!) and it was soooo good! Then we watched the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, which he had on DVR, and I hadn't seen because I was working when it actually took place. Absolutely breathtaking! I can't imagine the hours, not to mention the money it took to produce that spectacular presentation. All I can say is, poor London. That's going to be a tough act for them to follow.

The kids are leaving in the morning for a weekend in Fredericksburg, so I brought Bentley home with me. He's such a good doggie, and he and Starr play together so well, despite the huge difference in their size. She's still at 4.5 lbs, and Bentley weighs about 50. He's so gentle with her though, and they get along just great. They'll have a ball all weekend, and I'll spend a lot of time picking up after them. Both of them scatter toys to the four winds.

Sarah Palin - the choice for VP? An inspired choice, in my humble opinion. Lots to recommend her, and as yet, nothing has surfaced to be against her, though I'm sure the Dems are digging frantically. The race may get very interesting now.

August 30, 2008 - Msg 65717: So that was Floyds tummy rumbling? I thought for a minute Phil Sunkel was on the porch practicing his horn.

Possum, Boo said she was buying breakfast this morning so I'm good.

Boo, it sounds like Bruce's mind is preoccupied, not any eye problems. Maybe you should ask Floyd, he's a barber. It sure sounds like he needs to slow down and take it a little easier. Unfortunatly, adding building a house to the equation isn't going to help his situation. I don't know what to suggest to you, but if your really thinking he's dangerous maybe he needs to see a Dr about getting something to calm him down. But I imagine getting him to see a Doc would be hard. But you need to think of your childrens safety first. Maybe you could take him to a band concert some night. Might work.

Spot, you up to a round this afternoon? I'll drive, so I'll sit up front.

August 30, 2008 - Msg 65719: Good Morning All,

I came home from another work related/road trip, and my Beloved is sick. She Never gets sick. We've been married 24 years, and this might be the second time that she got sick.
And she won't let me do anything for her, like when I'm sick, she will make me toast, tea, make sure the house is quiet, etc....

The only thing I could do is fill her Coffee and listen, but she really has a bad cold. She is taking OTC meds, and just fighting thru it.

Does anyone have any suggestions, how to care for one that is sick, but she doesn't want to admit it? I love this lady, but I respect her wishes, and I just wish that I could do something that shows that I love her.

Everyone needs care when they are sick.

I plan on doing the cooking today/tonite, and just giving her any "space" that she might need just to get over this cold. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

RickyB/Otis

All of my emails to Charlie have bounced.

After all of these years, the porch has not changed, AND THAT right there is such a comforting feeling as I get older.

I would really like to thank Allan Newsome for that! His never ending, and tire-less efforts have made a dream come true for me. I cannot personally grasp how you have made this happen.
You are Webmaster Numero Uno!

To you Sir, Mr. Allen Newsome, I salute you.
You have really made a place in History here.

Thank you Sir, I commend you, and thank you very much for keeping the Front Porch, the Front Porch.

August 30, 2008 - Msg 65723: Asa, Floyd, Boo, Spot, Tom, possum I have one sentence for you~ Pipe down, this ain't no ballpark! You folks sure are a noisy bunch in the morning. Floyd's belly grumbling sounded like Gomer fixing a vacuum cleaner or something. Glad he got him some bisquits, I was fixin to go hunt my ear plugs. Romeena have fun with Bentley, I bet Starr will be so excited to have "company" for the day. Take pictures!
Now, I'm going to try & lay back down for a nap, all that ruckus got my dogs to barking & naturally that meant the birds started hollering so I had to get up, let the dogs out & uncover the birds. By then, I had fell so wide awake, wasn't any sense in trying to get back to sleep. So, can ya'll hold it down to a low roar while I'm napping please?

August 30, 2008 - Msg 65725: Oh & Otis Your missus sounds alot like me, when I'm sick, I just don't want to be bothered, just want to lay there & not have to talk or do anything. I know it drives Mr Neff crazy, cause he is just like you are wanting to help, but I honestly just don't want to be bothered. I try not to hurt his feelings & he has gotten better about understanding that, but he still wants to help. I let him bring me my meds or coffee, but for the most part, he has learned to just let me be & not be offended. My suggestion, just be close by so if she DOES need something you can get it for her & don't be offended or put off that she doesn't want any help. She must be a very strong, do it myself kind of woman. I'm like that & I can't stand to admit when something has gotten the best of me, mabye that's why I don't want to be bothered, so no one else can see that? hhmmmm now you got me pondering. How am I supposed to take a nap & ponder at the same time? Dad burn it!
About Leon I have tried to get in touch with him lots of times but haven't been able to since WAY back when. I often hoped he still checked in on the porch & would see some familiar faces & come back, but so far, haven't seen him. I ditto your comments to Floyd ain't he a treashuh?
Now, I really am go take a nap.

August 30, 2008 - Msg 65727: Hey to the porch. Yay, a long weekend! And the weather here is already getting quite fall-like. Just beautiful. Although we haven't had any rain to speak of since about May, and boy is it dry.
I agree with Otis, about Floyd (Allan) and all his hard work for the porch, and all the other Mayberry things he does. Thank you Floyd.
It seems like Leon checked in and posted something within the last year or so. I seem to remember a brief "drive by" posting by him.
Boo, sometimes I have the same problem with my husband and his driving. Sometimes it seems like he follows too closely, and other times he seems a bit agressive. But, in my case, I came to the conclusion that it's me. The last few years I've become rather, shall we say, anxious and high strung. I don't know why, I think it's working and trying to keep up a house, pay the bills, look after my mother, keep up with my garden, worry about my kids... (the list goes on) Anyhow, I think he really is a good driver, it's just that I'm too critical. Boy, that was hard to say, and I hope he doesn't read this... (I hate admitting I'm wrong). It's probably not the same in your case, and if he really is that bad, perhaps you should say something. But good luck; as you mentioned, that subject doesn't usually go over too well.
I'm sorry that I don't usually respond to everyone by name, but I do think of you all and always am thankful that I'm a member of this porch.
I've been thinking alot of Millie lately, and was wondering if we should do something for her on the anniversary of her death. I believe it was September 19th, but I need to check the archives, because that might be the day we found out, and she actually passed the night before. In any case, maybe we could dedicate the day to TAGS. I don't know how we would do that, but maybe everyone talk about their favorite eps or something? After all, the reason we all found this site, was because of the common love of TAGS. And I still remember Millie talking about when she was too weak to get out of bed, she would come to the porch, or her other favorite site, the Forum, and it would cheer her up and give her something to do. I miss her.
10-4, over and out, Hazel

August 30, 2008 - Msg 65728: Phew, just got thru reading the archives of the day we found out, now I'm crying all over again. Anyhow, yes, it was September 19th that we found out, and she had died during the night.

Me, I don't like to be bothered, but I want someone close-by. Does that make any sense? In other words, basically what Mavis said.

I've been looking for Charlie (aka "Leon") for some time now. He seems to have disappeared.

August 30, 2008 - Msg 65731:

And Boo, I don't have any input as to how to deal with the Mister. You might drop hints, but no one wants to hear they're losing their facilities. Proceed with caution, girlfriend!

Hey to Spot! Can you cook me up some GOOD grits? I declare I had some at IHop the other day that were just awful. Like in "My Cousin Vinny,": "What's a grit?" Well, in my estimation it's something, when prepared badly, you could hang wallpaper with.

Take a pot of grits, pour 'em in a bread pan, refrigerate overnight, then slice and fry in bacon grease the next morning with ample salt and pepper. Might be bad for the heart, but shore tastes like a million bucks!

August 30, 2008 - Msg 65732:

August 30, 2008 - Msg 65739: Howdy, all. Otis, it really is good to have you back in your rocker, and De§, it's good to see you, too. You do stop in now and then, but not often enough. As for Leon, it has been years and years! Actually, I don't think he ever visited this porch, did he? Wasn't he just on Sheriff Frank's porch? Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong - I'm old, and my remembery doesn't always work too well. My forgettery works much better!

Well, the kids didn't go to Fredericksburg. My DIL pulled a muscle in her back and is in a lot of pain. My son came and picked Bentley up a few minutes ago, so it's just me and Starr now. Too bad, they were playing so well and having a lot of fun.

There is a tree lizard about a foot long on the cottonwood outside my window right now. He's a fine-looking fellow, all fat and healthy. I'm so happy to see him, glad he's around. There's also the little chameleon who hangs out on the window ledge, and I often see the toad and a couple of little gray snakes in the flowerbeds. All those little critters are a good indication that the yard is healthy. Years ago, we used chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and rarely saw critters like that. Their presence now tells me that perhaps my gardening sins are forgiven, and all is well. All-organic is easy, clean, inexpensive and safe, and I just don't use chemicals anymore. Some of the neighbors laughed and told me it couldn't be done, but my yard is greener than theirs, my lawn is weed-free, and I have lots of little friends out there. Organic rules!!

Well, guess I'll go rustle up some leftovers for supper. Oh yeah - I've got that chicken I brought home from my son's house last night. I've also got a vine-ripened tomato, a cucumber, a sweet onion and some good vinegar/oil dressing. Not too shabby!

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

August 30, 2008 - Msg 65741: Don't know if I should even post here as I am in kind of a down and grumpy mood tonight.
I found out earlier today that we won't have enough money in the bank to pay the mortgage AND my wife's plane ticket home at the same time. I texted her this morning, saying "don't buy your plane ticket."
The reason for this is that SOMEONE has been spending an awful lot of money, via debit card, over in Hawaii. But that's not the worst of it, in looking over the bank statement online, I found that SOMEONE in Hawaii has also taken out $160 dollars, three times in as many days.
When asked where this money went, she couldn't remember(the money was taken out this past week) and that she doesn't have any more cash on her.
When it comes to money, my wife seems to have no sense whatsoever. Except that she will shop at Goodwill(which was where the majority of card transactions were made).
Spending that kind of money when we can't afford it only bothers me somewhat, although trying to conserve is exactly why I couldn't go over there, so what does she do? Goes out and spends and, what's more, takes out more money! Oy.
What is getting under my craw though is, how do you take out $160 three times in such a short time and not remember where it went?! Something is not right here.
Also, she makes me responsible for hatching a plan to get her enough money for a plane ticket. Isn't that nice?!
The good part is that my mom is going to lend us the $500 to get her a ticket. Though I am not sure that I want her to come home.(told you I was grumpy.)

Sorry for venting to you all, but you are all such good listeners. ;)

I'm hoping church tomorrow will lift my spirits up. Maybe a rousing sermon or something. :)

Have a good night all.

August 31, 2008 - Msg 65744: Good Sabbath Morning Porch! Beautiful day here in NE Tenn. Sterling I am so sorry you are dealing with this on top of everything else. You vent here any old time you want to, that's what friends are for, ain't it? I will echo what hm said about things being more expensive over there, BUT I'm with you on where did the money go, I would be more than a LITTLE grumpy if it were me, I'd be ALOT grumpy. Regardless of how expensive things are over there, one cannot possibly spend $480 bucks in a couple of days & not know where it went! I know she is going through a rough time, but I'm with you something is not right there. Yes love endures all things, & losing one's parent isn't easy, I know, been there, done that, but I still did what I could to keep things going as normal as possible. August 31, 2008 - Msg 65745: I know that things are more expensive over in hawaii, but not THAT expensive, know what I mean?! Especially when there are two other siblings(who can afford it) over there to help with expenses.
But you are right of course, hm, I should try to be more gracious, especially after her loss. I am trying.

Thank you for the words of comfort possum and Mavis.

August 31, 2008 - Msg 65746: Well,I finally had to put my old man in a home this weekend, and let me tell you its the hardest thing I've had to deal with since 'Nam.
He was 86 and had advanced alzhiemers and was a lot of aggravation to take care of.
We would come home to find him with food burning in the oven while he took a nap,and on more than one occasion he used the bathroom sink for a toilet.
My wife finally told me she had dealt with enough and that he would have to go to a home or she was leaving...I told her that she was my dad and I couldnt just turn my back on him,but she was adamant, either he went or she did.
It was a difficult decision to make but after she told me she wished he would die so we would be rid of him I didnt think my home was the best place for him.
I work each day from 9-10 at night and didnt feel safe leaving him in her care knowing how she felt.
My wife is a very nice lady but she cant become very verbally abusive and she is used to having her own way..it is after all "her" home and I guess I should have considered her feelings more, but he was my dad...do you guys think I did the right thing?
I feel bad just leaving him there that way after all he did for me..but he was really driving a wedge between me and the misses.

August 31, 2008 - Msg 65750: Well, I am back from my weekend away and I thought of you guys often. Ro and DES, we ended up staying the night in Kerville and what a beautiful drive. Everything is so green from the recent rains. We just stayed the night at the comfort inn and of course I though of Me-They when I got into the motel bed...thought of bedbugs were running through my mind. I brought my own pillows, at least and never would even sit on the bedspread. I also thought of Ro and DES as I was driving through San Antonio. Bruce and I ended up getting off the highway on Commerce street and we turned right when we were supposed to turn left and ended up in a deserted ghetto area. Very sad. Anyway, we went on to Comfort and looked in some of the neat little shops there, then to Kerville. We ate at a really good steak place called the Cowboy Steakhouse and it was really beautiful. The steaks were done over a mesquite grill. After dinner we ended up driving around in a beautiful, hilly neighborhood and there were dozens of deer roaming around. I saw many fawns, still with white spots, grazing in people's yards with their mothers nearby. I only saw one very proud buck amongst all the women and children. It was just beautiful and darn it, I forgot to bring my camera, wouldn't you know. It was a peaceful trip for the most part. Bruce's driving was much better. I had kind of dropped some hints in a joking way and it seemed to make a difference.

MDC, I thought of you when we passed the IHOP! haha

Hey SPOT. Bruce and I will actually be starting the house in October (or so he says). He still has cold feet now and then! We have not picked out the floors yet but have picked out kitchen and bathroom counters, I also have a good idea about tile in the bathrooms, about moulding and we have met with cabinet makers but are undecided who to use yet, and we selected the stone for the fireplace, which is the typical white-ish stone from the hill country (sort of looks like limestone, I guess). So, there is still much to decide. Thanks for asking!

So sorry for your difficulties, Sterling. I feel for you, Buddy. Continued prayers for your financial situation and for your family.

I don't know who you are MSG 65746, but your post is just heartbreaking. I am so sorry. My only advice would be to visit your dad as often as possible so he won't feel so alone. I just want to cry at the thought of what you and he are going through. There are others here on the porch who have been through the same kind of thing who could give you better encouragment and advice. Please come back and sit when you can. My sincere prayers for you and your dear dad.

Boo

August 31, 2008 - Msg 65751: HEY Boo..Ya I know hazel...SPOT

August 31, 2008 - Msg 65752: Good evening, all. Gosh, Boo, it sounds like you had a great weekend. Kerrville is a beautiful, clean town, my daughter lived there for a short time before moving to Fredericksburg. All those little German towns to the north and west of San Antonio are interesting, neat places to visit.

To Msg 65746, I echo Boo's comments. I lost my dad to Alzheimer's in 2003, so I know what it's like. I recall finding pans burned up, getting calls at 3 a.m. asking why I'm not there to take him to church - all the things that go with that awful condition. Having him in my home was not an option, since I work 12 hour shifts and he would have been alone, and actually, he made the decision himself to move to a retirement residence. It was hard to uproot him from his home, though, and just dismantle his life while he watched. He was so gracious through it all. Do visit him, every day if you can. He will live for those visits.

As for your wife's reaction to your dad's presence, I will say that I do understand, it can be extremely frustrating. The decision is hard, but sometimes it's the only thing you can do. My dad's sister died with Alzheimer's as well, and her deterioration was not marked with the grace that surrounded my father. She could be stubborn and uncooperative, and made incredible messes in the bathroom and everywhere else in the house. A nursing home was the only alternative there as well, as her husband was unable to care for himself adequately, let alone care for her. However, I would have this observation for your wife. I would suggest that she pray that she can retain all her faculties up to the end, and that the end be sudden when it comes. If it happens otherwise, her attitude and demands may come back to haunt her. What goes around, comes around.

Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

September 01, 2008 - Msg 65756: Yes, Ro, I especially enjoyed the dryer climate. It always amazes me how much cooler it feels than here with this horrible humidity on the coast. It is hot during the day in the hill country, of course, but the evenings and mornings are dry and comfortable. Here on the coast it is never that way until the first cool front from the north. Always the same all summer through most of October...hot and muggy around the clock.

Speaking of Alzheimer's, it is something that I have been thinking about lately. Bruce had a grandfather with Alz. and some of the changes I have been seeing in Bruce do make me a little concerned. He seems to have changed and I am hoping it is just the stress and normal forgetfullnes as we age.

"Hey" to REV and Hazel.

Good morning, SPOT.

Well, better finish my coffee and get going...Happy Labor Day!

Boo

September 01, 2008 - Msg 65757: Morning Miss Boo.....SPOT

September 01, 2008 - Msg 65758: Good morning, everyone! Yes, Boo, the hill country is a bit drier. I wish that extended up this far, because our humidity gets pretty oppressive at times, though of course it's nothing like along the coast. That's why I dislike Houston so much - when you take the horrible traffic and add all that humidity, it's a recipe for road rage.

So, Spot, you're working today. I have to work tonight and again Wednesday night, then am off until next Monday night. No Labor Day holidays for folks like us, I guess, who have jobs that are critical to the common good. Oh well, it might be a fairly quiet night. Probably no planned deliveries or scheduled surgeries, so we should just have the walk-ins. I hope your shift goes well, too.

It's beautiful out there today, skies are hazy but the sun is shining. My plumeria has decided to bloom again, and the hibiscus, which I thought was finished, has a flower as big as a dinner plate on it. Those things are amazing! Beautiful blue water lily in the pond, too. That thing hasn't missed a day since I bought it and put it in the water, at least two months ago. Worth every penny!

Well, one of my favorite Lucy eps is on - the one where Lucy and Ethel conk the talent scout on the head and knock him out. The antics as they sit him up, comb his hair, and try to act as though nothing happened - too funny!

Blessings, all. --Romeena
